Max is touting strong viewership for its true-crime limited drama series Love & Death.
The streaming service says that the Elizabeth Olsen and Jesse Plemons series has become its number one most-watched Max original limited series globally.
Previous limited series for the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned service, which didn’t give any hard numbers for Love & Death, include Station Eleven, Dmz and The Staircase.
It also noted that the limited series, which comes from writer David E. Kelley and director Lesli Linka Glatter, had the biggest launch of any Max original in 2023. However, there haven’t been any other big original drama or comedy launches this year – Love & Death has been its first original live-action scripted title to launch out of the U.S. since Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin and Rap Sh!t in July 2022, although it has launched series such as animated comedy Fired on Mars...

Desperate housewives never got out of style on television, and in “Love & Death,” Elizabeth Olsen is playing a particularly troubled one. The “Wandavision” and “Sorry for Your Loss” actor stars in the final trailer for the HBO Max series, released this Thursday.
In “Love & Death,” Olsen portrays Candy Montgomery, a real-life Texas housewife charged in 1980 for the murder of her friend and neighbor Betty Gore after Gore was found dead in her house from 41 axe wounds. We’re living in a true crime boom in both scripted and unscripted television — but “Love & Death” director and exec producer Lesli Linka Glatter said she hopes her new HBO Max series will be seen as much more than that.
Sure, the series involves the true story of accused (but acquitted) axe murderer Candy Montgomery, played by Elizabeth Olsen. “There is a horrible true crime at the core of this, but we didn’t want it to be just a true crime story,” Glatter said Saturday in a panel discussion after the premiere of “Love & Death” at the South by Southwest festival. And the show doesn’t shy away from Montgomery’s actions. But “it’s really, things are not what they appear to be. You have to go deeper to see what’s really going on. We really tried to look at the ‘how’ and ‘why’ rather than the ‘what.

Elizabeth Olsen isn’t satisfied in the trailer for Love & Death.
The official first look at the HBO Max true-crime drama (below) focuses on Candy Montgomery (Olsen) and Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons), as one-half of two churchgoing couples enjoying small town family life in Texas… until somebody picks up an axe, as the logline reads (and, as the true story goes).
“I have done all the things a wife is supposed to do. The house. The meals. Where is the payback?” Olsen’s Candy asks in voiceover, expressing her suburban housewife ennui, before propositioning Plemons’ Allan: “Would you be interested in having an affair?”
The limited series is written by David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies, The Undoing) and directed by Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland, Mad Men), who helms the majority of the episodes. The seven-episode series premieres with the first three installments on April 27, followed by a weekly release on Thursdays.

The duo, who just closed a first-look deal with Universal TV and NBCUniversal International for series and specials, have set up several high-profile new longform projects: movies about Anna Nicole Smith and Warren Jeffs at Lifetime and a Bonnie & Clyde miniseries at History. Sony’s TV movie/mini Evp Helen Verno brought Zadan and Meron to the Sony TV fold nearly twenty years ago, making Zadan and Meron’s partnership with the studio one of the longest in the TV movie/miniseries business. A movie project about Pompeii that Roman Polanski was set to direct two years ago is being re-imagined as a miniseries by a partnership that includes Sony Pictures TV, Scott Free and German producer Tandem.
As with the aborted Polanski pic, the event mini is based on the bestseller "Pompeii" by Robert Harris and will be unveiled Monday in Cannes during the Miptv program sales market. (Polanski went on to collaborate with Harris on another pic, "The Ghost Writer," but has no involvement in this epic for the smallscreen.)
Details are still sketchy as to which party will retain which distribution rights on "Pompeii," but Tandem, the company behind another mini based on Ken Follett's "Pillars of the Earth," will likely handle key European territories while Sony retains rights elsewhere.

The tentatively titled telefilm, from Sony Pictures Television and the Konigsberg Co., is based on the book "Murder in Sin City" by Jeff German. Binion (Modine), the heir to the Binion Horseshoe Casino fortune, was found dead in his Vegas home in 1998 by his ex-stripper girlfriend Sandy Murphy (Suvari), ultimately leading to a scandalous trial involving Murphy and her con artist boyfriend.
"Much like a trip to Vegas, this movie is a guilty pleasure," Lifetime senior vp original movies Tanya Lopez said, adding that it "captures all of the true crime story elements and the madness that surrounded Ted Binion's life."
Frank Konigsberg is executive producing the telefilm, which premieres in September. Peter Medak ("Carnivale") is directing from a script by Teena Booth.
"There is no one better than Peter Medak to tell this fascinating true story of sex, drugs and an untimely death," said Helen Verno, executive vp movies and miniseries at SPT.

Frank von Zerneck and Robert M. Sertner have signed a two-year deal with Sony Pictures Television for the development and production of TV movies. The deal marks the first time that von Zerneck/Sertner Films -- which was formed in 1987 and has numerous TV movies and miniseries on broadcast and cable networks to its credit -- has joined forces with a studio. Von Zerneck said there were many appealing factors that led him and Sertner to sign with SPT, including the fact that they've known SPT executive vp movies and miniseries Helen Verno since working together on the 1987 miniseries Queenie when Verno was an executive at New World.

It is a continuing story line at Sony Pictures Television for producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. The duo's Storyline Entertainment has re-upped at SPT with a new two-year deal to produce TV movies and miniseries. The first project under the new pact is a biopic of singer-actress Lena Horne for ABC, with Janet Jackson attached to star. SPT executive vp movies and miniseries Helen Verno said the studio had no hesitation about signing a new deal with the power producers even as the rating doldrums for TV movies continue.
