Embraced by Q-Anon conspiracy theorists, last year’s “Sound of Freedom” racked up over $250 million worldwide and brought Mexican-born director Alejandro Monteverde back in the spotlight almost two decades after his awfully saccharine 2006 debut “Bella” won the People’s Choice Award at TIFF. A filmmaker with an unabashedly Christian conservative agenda, Monteverde’s latest is a frustratingly sluggish biopic of Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini (Cristiana Dell’Anna), an Italian nun who defied the Catholic Church, as well as American institutions, to aide her countrymen in New York City during the late 1800s.
All of Cabrini’s past is reduced to an incident in her childhood where she nearly drowned. That she survived and continued to outlive her post-tuberculosis prognosis propels her to prove wrong anyone who suggests she doesn’t belong in any male-dominated space. After a meeting with Pope Leo Xiii (Giancarlo Giannini) to discuss her plans to build orphanages in China,...

After the release of “Sound of Freedom” in July, journalist and trafficking survivior-turned-advocate Sabra Boyd said she heard the refrain over and over: “How dare you criticize this. Don’t you want to save the children?”
Boyd criticized the film on Twitter, calling it “trauma porn” and writing that, like “Taken,” it ignored bigger realities of abuse that don’t lend themselves to sensationalized action movies. However, “Sound of Freedom” opened her to an unexpected level of online harassment.
“The thing that made me spend two days crying was I got called a pedophile, simply because I criticized ‘Sound of Freedom.’ I just can’t comprehend calling someone that,” Boyd told IndieWire. “That’s not a word that you just fling around, especially to someone who is a survivor of pedophile predators. You can’t say that to someone if you don’t understand what that word means. I can...

“Sound of Freedom” is the biggest success story of the summer outside of “Barbenheimer,” with $182 million in box office for the child-trafficking thriller — but its director isn’t taking part in the spoils.
Alejandro Gómez Monteverde sold his back-end participation to get the film finished, which means the filmmaker didn’t get rich off the stunning theatrical success.
“Like any independent film, we ran out of money,” Monteverde told TheWrap. “I decided to sell my points to the producers so we could finish the picture.”
“I don’t even want to think about what those points might be worth,” he added.
The movie took a challenging path to the box office. Produced in 2018 by Sentient Entertainment (which also produced “Map to the Stars” and “Taken”), the picture ended up in limbo after initial distributor Fox Latin America was purchased by Disney. Sound of Freedom director Alejandro Monteverde is getting back in business with Utah-based Angel Studios for the release of his latest movie, Cabrini.
Angel Studios, which found box office gold with Sound of Freedom and prides itself on working outside of the Hollywood studio system, will release Cabrini in theaters on March 8, 2024. The drama portrays Francesca Cabrini, a poor Italian immigrant in New York City who overcame the odds to become a major entrepreneur in the 19th century.
“Francesca Cabrini is one of the most inspiring and influential figures in modern history, and yet few know her story. Faced with seemingly insurmountable life obstacles, Cabrini chose instead to focus on how she could change the status quo in her time, and her impact on the world is still felt today,” Liz Ellis, COO of Angel Studios, said in a statement on Tuesday.

Despite its status as the highest-grossing indie film since 2019’s “Parasite,” “Sound of Freedom” has been dismissed as a QAnon fever dream by large swaths of the mainstream media. But that derisive label is “so ridiculous” to the film’s writer-director Alejandro Monteverde, who began working on the project in 2015, two years before QAnon emerged.
“The origin [of the film] has been avoided, purposely or accidentally, in the media,” Monteverde said. “The origin will answer a lot of these misconceptions on the film.”
Back in 2015, the Mexico-born, L.A.-based Monteverde says he was unaware of the scourge of child sex trafficking until he watched a network news segment on the subject. What he learned “shook my soul because I didn’t really believe it [existed],” he says. “I just, in my head, could not put those two pieces together — an adult and a child.”

In recent weeks, as a firestorm of chatter — and questions — surrounding Angel Studios’ Sound of Freedom spread, Hollywood scrambled to understand how tiny indie movie seemingly emerged from nowhere to become the sleeper hit of the summer box office.
One major legacy movie studio was so interested in the topic that it commissioned a survey of social media discourse and audience reaction. “Overall, the online consumer response to Sound of Freedom has been less about the movie itself and more rooted in conspiracy theories and ongoing political/culture wars within the United States and the globe at large,” says the summary, which a source shared with The Hollywood Reporter but who did not want their studio to be identified.
Among other conclusions: Right-leaning audiences dismiss criticisms of the movie from the left and mainstream press as the thoughts of “pedophiles, satanists and other malicious parties,” while left-leaning audiences found the...

It's been a bit of a mixed summer at the box office. We've had insanely high highs, as we did recently with the much-hyped showdown between "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer," but we've also had incredibly low lows, such as "The Flash" crashing and burning in brutal fashion after years of being stuck in development hell. Amidst all of this, one film that hardly registered in the mainstream consciousness prior to its release has managed to become the surprise success story of the year.
The faith-based "Sound of Freedom," released earlier this month by Angel Studios, has been on an absolute tear and stands a real shot at becoming one of the 10 biggest domestic earners at the box office in 2023. An international release is pending as well. That, on paper, is great for theaters. But the film has raised a great many questions in the aftermath of its blindsiding success. From links...

The Jim Caviezel film Sound of Freedom made a splash at the box office after seemingly coming out of nowhere. However, it had a bumpy road to release after its initial producers, 20th Century Fox, had been acquired by Disney, and the film would wait to be unveiled after crowdfunding gave it a new life. Sound of Freedom is one of the notable films of the summer as it rose out of obscurity to garner around $130 million in its domestic run while hoping to bring awareness to a heavy subject akin to movies like Taken, Skin Trade, and the Academy Award-winning Spotlight.
The film’s distributor, Angel Studios, has recently announced their plans to expand their screenings into worldwide markets. According to The Hollywood Reporter, on Wednesday, the studio “announced release dates for 21 markets, including the U.K., Australia, Spain, South Africa and a host of countries in Latin America.

Donald Trump plans to host a screening of Sound of Freedom at his Bedminster golf club next week, seizing on the unexpected box office performance of the movie.
Star Jim Caviezel and producer Eduardo Verástegui will attend, while Tim Ballard, the former government agent upon which the story is based, also will be there. The film is based on Ballard’s efforts to save children from sex traffickers in Colombia.
The screening will be open to club members and supporters, according to the Trump campaign.
The Angel Studios movie has so far generated almost $50 million at the box office. Although it is non-partisan, the film has generated considerable interest on the right, as a kind of outcast project that defied the major studios. It’s been promoted on Steve Bannon’s podcast, including by Caviezel and by one of Trump’s advisers, Jason Miller. In announcing the screening, the Trump...

With a rare Tuesday opening, “Sound of Freedom” (Angel Studios), a drama starring Jim Caviezel as a real-life rescuer of children from traffickers, grossed $11,563,200 — just under the day’s total for “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (Disney), which played in almost 2,000 more theaters with just under $11.7 million.
Another difference: “Indiana Jones” often played on multiple screens. Based on theater spot-checks, “Freedom” played mostly single screens, often with smaller capacities, and saw sold-out shows. The result was a stark contrast in the films’ per-theater average: “Indiana” was about $2,543 in 4,600 theaters, while “Freedom” saw about $4,400 in 2,634 theaters.
Angel also reported that its “Pay It Forward” promotion grossed an additional $2,679,000 thanks to patrons buying gift tickets for others for future use. Under normal industry practice, that revenue should be counted as they are used. With that among added, the day’s take for the film exceeded $14.2 million, which would make it #1 for the day.

Hard to believe, I know, but this is a real movie that real people have unashamedly put their names to. Because a sweet paycheck trumps human dignity. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): hated the first movie
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Imagine being asked to feel sorry for the Three Stooges. Except there’s only one of them, a combination of Larry and Curly (incorporating Moe would bring too much gravitas and intelligence to the character). Stir for 90 minutes, and leave for undemanding moviegoers to serve themselves. And then do it all again, though with even less sense of anyone involved giving a damn or putting in any actual effort, because the first such attempt made an ungodly amount of money so why bother?
Presenting Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. It sounds like a Saturday Night Live sketch that thinks...

Paul Blart heads to Las Vegas for a new silly slapstick comedy adventure in the upcoming film Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. Kevin James reprises his role as the ridiculously clumsy security guard in the Andy Finkman-directed sequel. The story centers on Blart, who attends a Security Guard Expo in Las Vegas with his daughter. While there, Blart takes on a group of dangerous art thieves to save the day, because that’s what he does.
I didn’t think the first movie was very funny, and this sequel looks like it’s going to be even worse. Hollywood sure does have some brain farts, and I still can’t believe the studio followed through with this sequel. The trailer starts out with Blart riding on his Segway scooter through the Vegas desert, and a bug flies in his mouth, so he has to spit it out because it’s gross.

In the sequel to 2009's mall cop comedy, the well-intentioned Paul Blart is fleeing Burlington Mall for Las Vegas, the land of high stakes, stilettos, and, most importantly, "the finest security this side of the Mississip." But worry not -- he's bringing his Segway with him. In addition to making everyone really want their own Segway, Paul Blart: Mall Cop brought in more than $183 million at the worldwide box office. Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, directed by Andy Fickman, is slated for an April 17, 2015, release. In addition to Kevin James as the titular mall cop, it also stars Molly Shannon,...

Alejandro Gomez Monteverde's Bella (2006) is an emotional, well acted film about mistakes and second chances. The story follows the entwined lives of three people: Jose (Eduardo Verástegui), a former footballer whose dream of making it into the professional leagues is taken away by a terrible accident; Manny (Manny Perez), Jose’s adopted brother, who wants to prove himself and his entrepreneurial talents; and Nina (Tammy Blanchard), a young woman who is trying to escape the gloom and hopelessness of her family life.
After giving up on their dream, Jose and Manny now run a Mexican restaurant where Jose is the acclaimed head chef while Manny efficiently manages the staff and menu. One day, Manny has to fire one of their waitresses, Nina, after she turns up for work late one time too many.
What Manny doesn’t know, however, is that Nina has just found out she is pregnant.

From the maker of Calendar Girls, another feelgood tale of sisters pulling together for a cause, but this is at least a story worth telling: the 1968 strike by workers at Ford's factory that led to equal pay for women. An avowedly pro-life drama about a chef and a pregnant woman is a pathetically simple-minded treatment of the issues, says Cath Clarke
The producer/star of this American pro-life melodrama Eduardo Verástegui used to be known as Mexico's Brad Pitt; then a few years ago he rediscovered his faith and became a poster boy for religion. In Bella, he plays a New York chef, Jose, who looks how little girls might picture Jesus: ocean-deep blue eyes, lustrous beard, serenely gorgeous. When a sacked waitress confides that she is pregnant and has booked in for an abortion, Jose takes her home to mama and papa. And what do you know, in the warm glow of family values and soul food, all moral complexity vanishes. "This film is saving so many babies," Verastegui told the Christian Broadcasting Network.
