Retro-active: The Best From Cinema Retro's Archives
(The following article was originally run in November, 2014)

With around sixty special guests in attendance, the Westminster Central Hall on Saturday the 7th of November was packed to its domed roof with excited Hammer film fans.
Familiar faces including Caroline Munro, Valerie Leon, Madeline Smith and Martine Beswick were providing some glamour, but the organisers managed to make the event extra-memorable by securing the presence of Edina Ronay, George Cole, Freddie Jones and others who had not signed autographs at a fan event before. At times queues to meet them ran out of the building and down the street! Other rare UK appearances were made from Veronica Carlson and Linda Hayden, flown in from the Us to meet their fans. The pairing of acting legends Sir Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi is a match made in heaven, but putting them together in a bawdy, bitchy British sitcom playing lovers who have been together for nearly 50 years? Yes, please!
Vicious aired last year in the UK and had its share of fans and critics. American viewers are finally getting a chance to decide for themselves if this show is the gay sitcom that we’ve been waiting for. (One good sign is that Vicious already has a second season order and will start shooting this fall. Hopefully the Us airings will garner solid ratings to continue airing beyond the first season).
TheBacklot sat down recently in West Hollywood with series creator Gary Janetti, who you know as a writer on such comedies as Will & Grace and Family Guy as well as being partnered with celebrity stylist/TV personality, Brad Goreski. Janetti...

I often pride myself on the fact that I grew up on Hammer films and many of my favourite moments have come from actors such as Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. As I watched most of the movies for the first time as a child there were some that never really connected me that much, one of them being Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell. As I’ve grown older though and more mature I’ve discovered that the movies I felt were the weakest of Hammer’s collection of horrors are often their strongest. Now that Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell is making its way to Blu-ray, this is my chance to revisit it and give it a second chance.

ITV
The ITV sitcom Vicious, in which Sirs Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi played a barbarous, elderly gay couple, was a surprise hit. The recent Christmas special was equally well-received and work has already commenced on the second series. One of the stars of that show is Philip Voss, who plays one of Freddie (McKellen) and Stuart’s (Jacobi) oldest friends, Mason.
Voss is a face that’s popped up all over the shop across the years, from Doctor Who alongside William Hartnell to Octopussy, and is a regular face in Richard Curtis movies such as Four Weddings… and About Time. But he is first and foremost a theatre actor, having received plaudits for his portrayal of Shylock in the RSC’s 1998 production of The Merchant of Venice, arguably one of the definitive portrayals of the character on stage. Having an admiration for actors both on stage and on-screen- especially...
