The horror genre is one that frequently insists upon sequels and franchises, even when they’re woefully misguided endeavors. There are too many sequels that are set up to fail and seem financially driven and creatively bankrupt, whether it’s Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, The Rage: Carrie 2, or American Psycho II: All American Girl. However, it’s always electric when one of these sequels does something special, different, and audiences are left with a Psycho II or The Exorcist III scenario on their hands. The Fly II is a horror sequel that was largely written off the moment that it was announced, sans David Cronenberg, even if its existence makes sense. The Fly II isn’t superior to its predecessor, but it does excel in many areas that are absent in the original. It brings something new to the table and marks a unique voice in body...

Bloody Disgusting’s 12 Days of Creepmas is nearly at an end, so it’s time to bring out the big guns in holiday horror. The 2nd Day of Creepmas brings a pair of gateway horror-comedies that will keep you busy from Christmas through New Year’s Eve.
When it comes to holiday horror, few can beat Joe Dante’s Gremlins. The charming 1984 classic decks the halls with holiday theming but it’s also unafraid to show its sharp pointy teeth. Dante’s sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, takes a drastically different direction, but its high energy and anything goes attitude make a strong case for annual New Year’s viewing.
The 12 Days of Creepmas continues on Bloody Disgusting, this time with 2 Gremlins movies to keep your holidays going through the New Year.

A new episode of The Arrow in the Head Show has just been released, and in this one hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek are revisiting the 1989 body horror sequel The Fly II (watch it Here). To find out what they had to say about this story of a boy becoming a fly – the latest in a long line of people becoming flies in this franchise – check out the video embedded above!
The Fly franchise began with a short story written by George Langelaan. That story served as a basis for a film that was released in 1958 and spawned two sequels: Return of the Fly (1959) and Curse of the Fly (1965). David Cronenberg’s 1986 remake of The Fly is one of the most popular remakes ever made, and it was soon followed by The Fly II. Welcome back, dear readers! We’ve nearly made it through another week and December is (quite literally) just right around the corner. And since the holiday season is pretty much upon us, we’re back with another installment of our annual Holiday Gift Guide. For today, I’m celebrating a handful of books that I have either had the chance to check out this year and fell in love with, or several titles that I’m confident genre fans will love that I just haven’t had a chance to check out yet for myself.
To make things easier, I’ve sorted the books into two categories: non-ficton and fiction. And also, just so everything is on the up-and-up, I want to mention that I did include my own latest book in today’s edition of the Hgg just because the artists featured in this second volume of Monsters, Makeup...

The Academy Award for Best Makeup (which added Hairstyling in 1993) has only been around, in earnest, since 1981. That year, macabre special effects genius Rick Baker won for transforming David Naughton into a grotesquely hirsute lycanthrope for “American Werewolf in London.” In that same decade, Chris Walas and Stephan Dupuis won for turning Jeff Goldblum into the sticky, disgusting Brundlefly for David Cronenberg’s “The Fly.”
Save for a handful of gruesome gothics like “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” and “Pan’s Labyrinth” — both prioritizing practical effects over digital — winners in this category can be awards bait (“Bombshell”), fantasy franchise entries, or the rare original auteur vision (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”). And there have been major short shrifts, such as John Carpenter’s “The Thing” not landing a nomination in 1982 for its human-alien chimeras courtesy of Rob Bottin.

Riding the crest of the 1980s horror-comedy movie wave, Joe Dante's "Gremlins" signaled, along with contemporary films like "An American Werewolf in London" and Larry Cohen's "Full Moon High," a growing comfort with the absurdities of the genre. It would further mark an industry shift, with its violence pushing the boundaries of family-friendly cinema and necessitating the emergence of the MPAA's PG-13 label. "Home Alone" director Chris Columbus would pen the story of a fictional American town overrun by furry non-alien creatures, a sort of "Trouble with Tribbles" storyline that filmmaker and "Gremlins" executive producer Steven Spielberg would purchase and bring to Warner Bros.
In his exec producer capabilities, Spielberg held sway over the casting process, leading to the hiring of then-unknown Zach Galligan and the very-known Phoebe Cates in the respective roles of teenagers Billy Peltzer and Kate Beringer, the former of whom befriends the one good gremlin in the movie.

The old showbiz maxim goes, "Never work with children or animals," but what about mogwai? That was Zach Galligan's challenge on the set of Joe Dante's 1984 creature feature "Gremlins." Part black comedy and part family adventure, the Chris Columbus-penned story follows a young man who receives a mythic furry creature as a pet and, once that pet multiplies, the havoc that ensues. Against an 11 million production budget, "Gremlins" earned more than 150 million at the box office and became a game-changer of sorts; its violent sequences (including a mother's gremlin killing spree) prompted the MPAA to amend its rating system to include the PG-13 rating.
The film's human star, Zach Galligan, spent a fair amount of the 106-minute runtime acting opposite an assortment of Chris Walas-designed mechanical puppets. As young Billy Peltzer, Galligan interacts largely with the cutest of all gremlins, the googly-eyed furball Gizmo, teaching the...

Jeff Goldblum is standing in a hall of masks in San Dimas, California when he’s taken back. How could he not be? Everywhere he looks, on each shelf and behind every sales rack, there is another row of ghoulish faces staring back at him. I never had a chance to meet Matt Rose in person, but we had become friends over the last few years via emails and a few phone calls, and he was somebody who you felt like you knew for a lifetime even after one conversation. For those who may not know, I started working on a series of books celebrating the lives of special effects artists in 2016, which is how I connected with Matt, and his story was (and still is) set to be a part of the next installment that should hopefully be out later this year. Tragically, though, Matt Rose passed away this weekend, and it breaks my heart that he won’t be here to enjoy seeing his career commemorated in print, because he deserved to get to enjoy that moment. So, I thought I would take this moment to pay tribute to Matt here and let...

The saying goes that books and their covers aren’t always the same or words to that effect; this particular logic had long been applied to the hallowed halls of the video stores, as eye-popping box art used to lure an unsuspecting victim could lead to atrocities or worse, boredom. And then there’s Screamers (1981), which promises something cool and twisted on the cover yet delivers a completely different film – an Italian period adventure tale with killer fish guys filleting to and fro. Different? You bet. Kind of delightful? Definitely.
The cover of Screamers boasts well, a screaming man who has been turned inside out, or rather appears just to be wearing his veins like an Italian horror wetsuit. Groovy, right? Well you can thank Roger Corman and his New World Pictures for the hucksterism; Screamers original title is The Island of the Fishmen, made in ’79, director Sergio Martino (Torso...

In what’s shaping up to be a busy week for the great and powerful Jeff Goldblum, the Thor: Ragnarok actor has been chatting to Yahoo Movies (h/t Bloody Disgusting) about one of his most famous roles: Seth Brundle.
Yes, David Cronenberg’s The Fly still holds a special place in Goldblum’s heart, as it helped launch his film career back in 1986. It’s also one of his more memorable performances – even by Jeff Goldblum’s own lofty standards – as his wildly eccentric scientist mutated beyond recognition soon after his DNA was fused with that of a bug-eyed insect.
As for Seth Brundle’s status as an atypical ’80s sex symbol, Goldblum told Yahoo Movies the following:
I had my flowy locks at that point. If anything is attractive, at least for me, it is somebody who is passionate and interested in something, and focused on something, and has some brainpower too,...

[Editor's Note: A version of this retrospective originally appeared in the September 2014 issue of Deadly Magazine.] With House II: The Second Story, the vastly underrated sequel written and directed by Ethan Wiley (who also wrote the screenplay for the original House), New World Pictures introduced audiences to a whole new world filled with unexpected frights and adventures with an Old West twist. The sequel was released in late August of 1987 and took a decidedly left turn away from the more straightforward house of horrors style seen in Steve Miner’s original film, instead favoring a tone that was much more light-hearted, fun-spirited, and far more family friendly.
For the uninitiated, House II follows a young man named Jesse (Arye Gross), who inherits a strange house from the parents who gave him up for adoption when he was just an infant. As he begins to settle into his new dwelling with the help of his girlfriend, Kate (Lar Park Lincoln), his best pal, Charlie (Jonathan Stark), and Charlie’s aspiring musician girlfriend,...

David Cronenberg’s The Fly is an all-time horror classic and might just be the finest body horror film ever made. Even three decades after it was released, its gross practical special effects still astonish, as does Jeff Goldbum’s twitchily committed performance as the unfortunate Seth Brundle. Despite its firm place in the cinematic canon, however, few recall its sequel, The Fly II.
Released in 1989, the film follows the orphaned Martin Brundle, Seth’s son, as he discovers that he’s got his own special kind of buzz about him. Directed by Chris Walas, the makeup and animatronics director on the original, the film features only one returning cast member (Geena Davis is replaced by Saffron Henderson) and the general consensus is that it’s an entirely unnecessary footnote to the original. It’s not all bad though, as it’s got a totally sweet gore moment where a...

“You say you hate Washington’s Birthday or Thanksgiving and nobody cares, but you say you hate Christmas and people treat you like you’re a leper.”
Gremlins plays midnights this weekend (May 5th and 6th) at The Tivoli Theater as part of the Reel late at The Tivoli Midnight series.
It’s Christmas in American picture-postcard town Kingston Falls. Billy Peltzer is given an unusual present; a cute little furry creature called a Mogwai. He is delighted with the gift until he accidentally gets it wet and it quickly multiplies. Worse still is to come when the new creatures are fed after midnight and transform into horribly mischievous Gremlins …
Gremlins (1984) is a fabulous flick, because it somehow manages to be both a sentimental good-natured modern-day fairytale, and an uproariously riotous comic horror film that stomps all over the nice wholesome image of Christmas and small-town America. The script by...

This Week: Special effects master Chris Walas, known for ‘The Fly’ and ‘Gremlins.’
You may not recognize his name, but the odds are good you know his work.
Welcome to the first episode of the Film Itself podcast, another new addition to the One Perfect Pod family of shows. The idea for our new show is simple: each week, we’ll be speaking to film fans both inside and outside the industry. Directors, cinematographers, actors, podcast hosts, video essayists, journalists, if they have a passion for film, we want to explore that. For those that may not know, Film Itself was the original name for One Perfect Shot, but in the end, the latter was a better description of what we did (and do). Our new show is an opportunity to dust off that name, a quiet tribute of sorts to the late Roger Ebert (a hero of mine), and give it the spotlight as we talk...

I’m a huge fan of David Cronenberg’s entire career, but if there is one of his films that I continue to visit repeatedly, it’s The Fly. Between Howard Shore’s brilliant and heartbreaking score, the incredible performances from both Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, and the amazing Oscar-winning special effects from Chris Walas that brought Brundlefly to life, The Fly is just one of those perfect movies that I enjoy rewatching and still continue to discover new things about the more I revisit it.
Like many, one of the big reasons I first fell in love with The Fly when I saw it at the drive-in as a kid back in the summer of ’86 was the infectious chemistry shared between Goldblum and Davis. Their shared passion is palpable and the way the duo (who were dating in real life at the time) influences each other throughout The Fly...

The horror genre had quite the year in 1986. Jason Voorhees climbed out of his coffin, scientist Seth Brundle tinkered with teleportation, two Tobe Hooper films were released in theaters, and Stephen King's directorial debut burned rubber on the big screen. In our new, free issue of Deadly Magazine, we revisit some of the genre's most memorable movies from that magical mid-’80s year with the people that helped make them. Welcome to the 30-year reunion for the Class of 1986.
Within the pages of this Deadly Magazine issue, you'll find retrospectives and interviews that shine spotlights on some of the most celebrated, and in some cases, underrated, films from 1986.
Scott Weinberg's interview with Barbara Crampton offers an intriguing look at the making of Stuart Gordon's other H.P. Lovecraft adaptation, From Beyond. Scott Drebit enrolls at Slaughter High to give his grade on the school-set slasher. Joseph Maddrey sits...

Well, here we are again, back in Corman waters. Why do we keep coming back? What is the pull of a Roger Corman production that calls to us like a syphilitic siren wailing from the rocks, beckoning us home? My guess is quality chafing the walls of quantity. There are a lot of exploitation movies out there, and most were justified their position on the lower rung of a double bill on a Tuesday night at the drive-in. But un film du Corman is different – he’s always had an innate gift for corralling talent on the rise, and kind enough to foster it on the way down. His turn of the decade monster mash Humanoids from the Deep (1980) is a perfect storm of his wondrous cinematic sensibilities.
And of course I mean ‘wondrous’ as it applies to our station, the gloriously trashy and deliciously weird. Humanoids fits neatly into...

[A variation of this interview appeared in the December 2014 issue of Deadly Magazine] Released more than 30 years ago, Joe Dante’s Gremlins has left an indelible mark on both the horror genre and the entertainment world as a whole. The movie was a true rarity at the time, masterfully blending a heartwarming holiday story with a cautionary tale of what happens when you let nature run amok, Gremlins has become a true classic film that continues to impact new generations of fans.
At the time he came onto Gremlins, Dante had mostly independent projects under his belt, making the project a huge leap for him as a filmmaker. In fact, when he was first approached to direct Gremlins, he thought it was a mistake after receiving Chris Columbus’ initial spec script in the mail one day unexpectedly. “Chris had written Gremlins initially as a spec script and it was intended to be the first, low-budget horror movie out of Amblin Entertainment. Special Mention: Werckmeister Harmonies
Directed by Bela Tarr and Ágnes Hranitzky
Written by László Krasznahorkai and Bela Tarr
2000, Hungary / Italy / Germany
Genre: Emotional Horror
Bela Tarr is a filmmaker whose work is a highly acquired taste, but as a metaphysical horror story, Werckmeister Harmonies is an utter masterpiece that should appeal to most cinephiles. The film title refers to the 17th-century German organist-composer Andreas Werckmeister, esteemed for his influential structure and harmony of music. Harmonies is strung together like a magnificent symphony working on the viewer’s emotions over long stretches of time even when the viewer is unaware of what’s going on. Genre: Giallo
One of the most self-assured directorial debuts of the 70’s was Dario Argento’s The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. Not only was it a breakthrough film for the master of Giallo, but it was also a box office hit and had critics buzzing, regardless if they liked it or not. While Edward Scissorhands may be one of Burton’s most beloved characters because of Johnny Depp’s performance, the character is also memorable for his looks. For starters, there is his birds-nest hair. The wispy cob-webb look not only reassured audiences of Edward’s sad, lonely and parentless existence, but it also became an easy identifier for Burton’s gothic style. Indeed, Edward’s wild, untamed yet solid hairstyle was similar to that of Beetlejuice, whose film came out two years prior, and would be similar to many other characters we would see in later Burton films.
Edward’s pasty white make-up helped audiences to understand that he was not just a normal man.

Jeff Goldblum plays the charmingly off-kilter scientist Seth Brundle whose experiment backfires, turning him into a six foot, four inch insect; “Brundlefly”. Goldblum’s low key humor and close-to-the-vest performance, along with the empathetic screenplay (echoing the mordant comedy of Kafka’s "Metamorphosis"), anchors the film in the workaday world, even as the movie becomes increasingly, almost absurdly, repulsive. The brilliantly icky make-up effects, by Cronenberg’s partner-in-slime, Chris Walas, took the Academy Award.

Joe Dante's seminal horror comedy Gremlins celebrated its 30th anniversary last summer and its underrated sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, will have its 25th birthday this June. The anniversaries of these two memorable creature features may have many remembering the franchise and wishing for that third installment that never was. According to /Film, Warner Bros. has hired Carl Ellsworth to pen the Gremlins remake, with Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg are producing the project. Many fans will remember that Columbus wrote and...
