Even though it’s Independence Day today, I am going to talk about Flag Day. It was a couple of weeks ago, and on that day Geek Culture paused to remember the passing of a favorite son. It was a day to celebrate the legacy of Mark Gruenwald, taken away too early twenty years ago. And for a guy who loved Captain America, it was fitting that his birthday was on Flag Day.

My first exposure to Mark Gruenwald came from his visionary fanzine. Omniverse was published long before the Internet provided an infinite number of virtual spots for fans to gather...

Last week, I joined a group of journalists at Pixar in Emeryville, where we were shown the first hour of "Inside Out," this summer's new Pixar film. You can get a look at some of what we did in this gallery, and you can see some concept art for the film embedded below. The last interview of my day was with Jonas Rivera, who produced “Inside Out.” Rivera started at Pixar as an intern, making him pretty much the walking incarnation of a success story at the studio. We’d spoken earlier in the day as part of a round-table along with director Pete Docter, but this was my chance to speak to Rivera one-on-one. Drew McWeeny: I said this when you were in the room earlier: I feel like each Pixar director at this point has a signature and has something that they bring to the table that makes their films different.

Take note: When it comes to pizza, Ellen Degeneres does not play. Though Meryl Streep, Lupita Nyong'o, Julia Roberts and the rest of the actors in the front row of the Dolby Theatre probably thought that the 2014 Oscars host was kidding when she began taking orders, Ellen delivered (literally) with a stack of pies not long after. Disney has announced that Brad Bird, Damon Lindelof, and George Clooney's sci-fi adventure project Tomorrowland has officially started shooting. The studio sent out a press release earlier today, and it came along with the following official synopsis for the highly anticipated film.
Bound by a shared destiny, a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor jaded by disillusionment embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory as “Tomorrowland.”
There's a lot of secrecy behind the film, and the 1952 box found in the Disney archives. It was pretty obvious though after Disney's D23 Expo that the box and its contents were all fake, and used as a brilliant marketing campaign that sparked the imagination of fans like me. I don't care that it's fake, because it's still sure to be an awesome movie,...

First, I have to mention that this is definitely a fan-made poster from April Fool's Day. But secondly, I have to share it because it's an awesome Photoshop job that really taps into the absolute fan-pleasing joy essential to the Marvel movies. Whether or not this would really happen (especially considering the crazy theory I came up with on Friday after it was announced that J. August Richards will be appearing on "S.H.I.E.L.D.") doesn't matter. This poster for a fake "Luke Cage" movie with action movie superstar Dwayne Johnson made up to appear like the Hero for Hire is simply awesome.
Check out the full poster below.
The picture came to my attention via Marvel Comics artist Declan Shalvey's Twitter feed. He tweeted the picture to writer Jeff Parker; those two both worked with the Luke Cage character during their great run on the comic book "Thunderbolts.

The climax of the latest "Iron Man 3" trailer was packed with armor, hinting that it won't just be Tony Stark and James Rhodes donning a suit in the film. This fact has pretty much been confirmed by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige (spoilers ahoy), and it got us thinking about the other supporting characters that have taken on some of Marvel's most popular mantles. The aforementioned "Iron Man" films have done a decent job of expanding its characters into the roles assumed by their comic book counterparts. How do the rest fare?

If Captain America's franchise follows the source material faithfully, we could leave "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" with a replacement Cap ready to go. Following the assassination of Steve Rogers just after Marvel's "Civil War" event, Bucky himself filled the role for two years. The Bucky Cap era was generally well-received...

I have a much higher tolerance for low-budget cinema than most people, which would explain why I was drawn to director Daniel Dahl’s $5,000 action flick “Killing Heat.” A friend told me it sounded like something I would enjoy, and, not surprisingly, he was correct in his assessment. That’s mostly because I’m predictable when it comes to cinema. I guess that’s a good thing, otherwise I may have missed out on this. Forgive me — it’s late and I’m excited about something. It happens that way sometimes. Before diving into the trailer, read this synopsis: When Jd is fired from his dull desk job, two of his old college buddies invite him to Thailand for some old fashion R&R. Landing at Bangkok airport he meets his old pals John Walker and Gordon Goldman, who both have become successful international businessmen in Thailand. Straight to Pattaya,...

Dimension Films has announced that deals have been made and casting is underway on a sequel to Sin City –the film on which director Robert Rodriguez exited the DGA because they would not let creator Frank Miller share directorial credit.
Since Disney has had a huge success in turning their Pirates of the Caribbean ride into four movies (and counting), they’ve decided to adapt Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride -one their longest-running attractions- into a live action/CGI feature film. By the way, elements of Kenneth Grahame’s 1908 classic children’s book The Wind in the Willows have been adapted before by Disney, in particular the 1949 film The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. And the ride is one of the few attractions that are still running at park since it opened in 1955. Pete Candeland, a commercial and video helmer, has been hired to direct, but the project is still seeking a writer.

The blended malt and grain has had the final touches put on it by Jim Beveridge at John Walker & Sons and will be unveiled in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of the queen's reign over the UK. Jim said: 'The whisky was first distilled in 1952 and there was a great deal of care and attention at that stage.
