Programs from Elliot Page’s production company and the team behind comedy Letterkenny are among Paramount+’s latest Canadian slate.
The streamer’s strategy in Canada was unveiled today at the Banff World Media Festival, with a line-up of four projects in development and an original documentary from documentary filmmaker Dianne Whelan.
Actor and producer Page’s Page Boy Productions and Canadian producer heavyweight Muse Entertainment are working up Len & Cub, a limited six-part series dramatizing the secret relationship of two young men in rural 20th-century New Brunswick whose story came to light when a box of photos was recently discovered in an estate sale. Lynne Kamm is writing.
Hate the Player: The Ben Johnson Story is a scripted comedy from New Metric Media, the company behind Letterkenny, about the scandal of the titular Johnson, the former Canadian sprinter who went from “hero to zero in 9.79 seconds.

In recent years there’s been a name associated with the horror genre that is guaranteed to get me excited… Lora Burke. From her absolutely amazing, captivating performance in Poor Agnes; to Justin McConnell’s 2018 sci-fi horror Lifechanger; to 2020’s amazing home invasion thriller For the Sake of Vicious, Burke has been one of the genres shining stars yet, for a lot of people, she’s something of an unknown. Hopefully Motherly, her Fourth stunning performance in a row, will change all that.

Lora Burke in Motherly
In a big, rambling house in the middle of nowhere, a mother, Kate (Lora Burke), and daughter, Beth (Tessa Kozma), have been sequestered away from the world, hidden because of a horror in their past. Beth is bored, stomping around the place, resentful because she’s been taken away from her friends and she can’t have a proper birthday party. Kate is trying to hold it together for both their sakes, but when she begins to suspect that someone is prowling around the house, she realises that their situation could be about to get a lot worse. With Motherly just released in US cinemas, I met up with Lora and director/co-writer Craig David Wallace to discuss it.

As many parents have learned over the past two years, being cooped up with a child is exceptionally stressful. We experience time differently when we’re younger so it’s understandable that they get frustrated, but that doesn’t make it any easier to handle, especially when they struggle to regulate their emotions and lash out at those around them. Kate (Lora Burke) and Beth (Tessa Kozma) are not living under lockdown conditions but they might as well be. Placed under witness protection in the aftermath of a violent incident at their home, they have been advised not to go anywhere. As Kate struggles to write a book about what happened, which might at least reduce the financial strain they’re under, Beth stomps around their remote country home, focused only on her own distress.
Made just before the Covid-19 pandemic began in earnest, Craig David Wallace’s Motherly, which screened at Frightfest 2021, benefits.

Taglines: "What would you do for your child?" Motherly was formerly titled Daughters. Now, Motherly is nearing completion, with Raven Banner Entertainment preparing to deliver the film worldwide. If you've read my retrospective interviews on the series or heard me rave about it on our high school-themed episode of Corpse Club, then you know that I absolutely adore the Crowley High kids who for two years were "fighting evil with mixed results" on the TV series Todd & The Book of Pure Evil. Years after the show was prematurely canceled, the cast and crew of the cult series are reuniting for one more blood-spattered ride in the animated film Todd & The Book of Pure Evil: The End of the End, and Raven Banner has revealed the official trailer for the film ahead of its release this fall.

Two episodes were provided prior to broadcast.
It’s more fitting than frustrating that Slasher, horror network Chiller’s first foray into original scripted programming, unspools as an unabashed amalgam of horror movie tropes. After all, the NBCUniversal-owned channel has carved out a funky little niche for itself broadcasting “scary good” films and TV series, from classics like Kolchak: The Night Stalker to little gems like Harper’s Island, not so much curating its content as airing it all as a bloody buffet for horror hounds.
That approach has kept the lights on up until now, encouraging Chiller to think bigger with original features like Animal and (excellent) SXSW entry The Boy. And so, despite the creative energies of director Craig David Wallace (Todd and the Book of Pure Evil) and writer-creator Aaron Martin (DeGrassi: The Next Generation), it makes sense that Slasher is also guided by the techniques and...

Though it was prematurely cancelled in 2012, the horror comedy TV series Todd & The Book of Pure Evil has lived on through the memories of its loyal fan base, been discovered by a new audience on home media, and will return in an animated film in the near future. Last fall, I had the great pleasure of speaking with the series' co-creators and main cast, who looked back on fighting evil... with mixed results.
In this second part of Daily Dead's retrospective on Todd & The Book of Pure Evil, Alex House (Todd Smith), Maggie Castle (Jenny Kolinsky), Bill Turnbull (Curtis Weaver), Melanie Leishman (Hannah B. Metal music, creativity, pervertedly dark humor, stoner madness, an overabundance of gore brought on by practical effects work – these are all things horror fans love. Not every horror endeavor has to be a chilling tale of paranormal adventures or some serious take on serial killers. Sometimes it’s great just to relax with nothing but pure entertainment through a medium that laughs at the notion of taking one’s self too seriously, and that’s where an epic little Canadian TV show came in called Todd & The Book Of Pure Evil.
Starring Alex House as a hormone driven high school metalhead named Todd, he stumbles upon a Necronomicon-like book that proclaims he is the “Pure Evil” one, said to bring death and destruction to the world. Fighting his fate alongside his best friend Curtis (Billy Turnbull), the two pot-smoking losers are forced to fight a new monster each episode as...

Sadly, "Evil" shall not prevail.
Canadian TV channel Space has confirmed that it won't be renewing cult hit "Todd and the Book of Pure Evil" for a third season. The news comes as quite a shock, given the show's accolades from critics and fans alike. It was recently picked up in foreign markets like Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Germany, where fans were heard crying out "ingen!""nei!"and "kien!" upon hearing that their new favourite show won't be back.
The show's creator, Craig David Wallace, revealed the news last night at the Writers Guild of Canada Screenwriting Awards, where, ironically, he was being honoured for his work on "Todd." In a state of disbelief, we reached out to a Space rep who confirmed that yes, it is indeed true. Nooooo!

Imagine, if you will, a book of awesome power. A book that will make your deepest, darkest desires come true…but at a horrifying cost. This is the Book of Pure Evil, and it's loose in Crowley High, unleashing its dark power and filling the school hallways with monsters made of human fat and flesh-eating zombie rockers. Thankfully, four teenagers stand between The Book and the end of the world as we know it. They will save our souls — whether they like it or not.
Todd and the Book of Pure Evil is presumably enjoyed most by people that love heavy metal, splatter-filled horror movies and mediocre jokes. I am not one of those people, so I don't necessarily love this show. I don't think it's terrible or as bad a show as The Big Bang Theory,...

Canadian import ‘Todd & the Book of Pure Evil’ legally reaches our shores tonight. The comedy horror series began as a short film directed by showrunner Craig David Wallace in 2003, before being picked up for a pilot and following series in 2009 by Canadian channel ‘Space’. The show follows Todd Smith, a student at Crowley High, and his ‘Scooby Gang’ consisting of his best friend Curtis, brainy scientist Hannah and the object of Todd’s affections, Jenny.
Crowley High was also founded by Satanists and is the current home of a cursed Book of Pure Evil that’s a lot cheekier and more airborne than ‘The Evil Dead’s’ Necronomicon. The Book grants wishes to the distressed and troubled students of the high school, but they each go horribly wrong, leading to murder and bloodshed, in hilarious ways. Todd’s gang do whatever they can to try and stop the book, whilst...
