The line to see Julie Andrews at the 92nd Street Y wrapped around the square of a sprawling New York City block. Seventy years since the start of her career, 60 since she asked “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?” as Lerner and Loewe’s first Eliza and 50 since she sang “The Sound of Music” before the Eastern Alps — Andrews still draws a crowd.
Her fans gathered Saturday evening to hear her speak about “Home Work: A Memoir of My Hollywood Years,” the actress’ second memoir, co-written with daughter Emma Walton Hamilton and chronicling the breadth of her years in the film industry, from “Mary Poppins” to “Victor/Victoria.”
“I was learning on my feet every inch of the way,” she said, joined onstage by her daughter and film scholar Annette Insdorf, who led the talk.

Julie Andrews, the Academy Award-winning star of movie classics The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins, has her second memoir out on Tuesday. In Home Work: A Memoir of My Hollywood Years (Hachette Books), she talks about her movie career, her learning curve, and the challenges of doing the Poppins flying scenes. Written with daughter Emma Walton Hamilton, the book has several confessions from the star, not all of them flattering
Among the book’s revelations:
*** In her teenage years, she discovered her biological father was a family friend with whom her mother had had an affair. She also notes that her parents were alcoholics, and that her stepfather, Ted Andrews, tried twice to get into bed with her. She fitted a lock on her bedroom door to end his attempts.

Take Me Out contestant Emma Walton certainly made an entrance during tonight's (February 9) episode.
The blonde was making her way down the stairs with the rest of the girls at the beginning of the show when she took a tumble.
Host Paddy McGuinness quickly ran to her rescue, but his help resulted in an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction for Emma.
McGuinness told The Sun: "Luckily, Emma's a top girl and a right laugh so she took it in her stride - literally!"
Emma said: "If it was going to happen to anyone it was bound to be me."
She was unhurt in the fall. Take Me Out continues on ITV next Saturday.

Julie Andrews in Austria: hardly an unfamiliar sight, both in movie history and now on New Year's Day.
The Oscar, Emmy and Grammy winner filmed one of her most famous roles in that country, Maria in the 1965 screen classic "The Sound of Music." Along with her elegant and cultured image, that made her a natural to succeed the late Walter Cronkite as host of PBS' traditional "Great Performances" broadcast of the Vienna Philharmonic's holiday concert, and she'll fill that role for the fourth time when "From Vienna: The New Year's Celebration 2013" airs Tuesday, Jan. 1 (check local listings).
"I love doing it," the ever-gracious Andrews tells Zap2it. "The PBS people are very nice, they do this with class and style, and we do something different every year. It's always a learning curve for me, going to new places and finding out about them. And of course, the music is lovely.

New York -- It may take a big spoonful of sugar to make this go down: Julie Andrews says that her four-octave voice is not coming back.
The Oscar and Tony Award-winning actress said in a recent interview that a botched operation to remove non-cancerous throat nodules in 1997 hasn't gotten better. It has permanently limited her range and her ability to hold notes.
"The operation that I had left me without a voice and without a certain piece of my vocal chords," said Andrews, who starred in such quintessential stage and film musicals as "The Sound of Music," "My Fair Lady" and "Mary Poppins."
The actress says she can still speak "pretty well" and can still hit a few bass notes, "So if you wanted a rendition of `Old Man River' you might get it, but I'm not singing as much these days."

Julie Andrews has no designs on replacing Santa Claus as a symbol of the holiday season, but she's giving him a good race anyway.
That's reaffirmed by the veteran talent's current television appearances. This weekend alone, she'll be present vocally in "Shrek 2" on MoreMax (Friday, Nov. 30) and "Shrek Forever After" on FX (Saturday, Dec. 1), and she'll be both seen and heard in "Eloise at Christmastime" on Hallmark Channel (Sunday, Dec. 2).
And that's hardly all: ABC Family ran Andrews' Oscar-winning performance in Disney's "Mary Poppins" over Thanksgiving weekend, and the channel also will feature her voice in the animated "Despicable Me" (Saturday, Dec. 8) and her presence in the two "Princess Diaries" movies (Friday, Dec. 28). Speaking to Julie Andrews in person is exactly like talking to a hybrid of Mary Poppins and Maria von Trapp -- particularly when she tells you in a tempered English accent that the most important thing you can do for yourself is to "let your sparkle out." That advice comes with all the authority and love of a spoonful of sugar.
At age 76, after making more than 30 movies, Andrews is now writing a series of "Very Fairy Princess" children's books with her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton. He was 88. After a turbulent 14-year marriage to former actress Patricia Walker, the famed director met Andrews while working with her on the 1969 musical Darling Lili. After the film wrapped, Edwards told People in 1977: "It seemed dumb not to admit we were in love," while Andrews revealed: "I kept telling him it wasn't going to work!" The couple were married for 40 years and resided in both Gstaad, Switzerland, and Malibu. Edwards was presented an honorary Oscar in 2004. Blake Edwards, the master craftsman who gave the world such stylish screen fare as Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Pink Panther series with Peter Sellers, and Victor/Victoria with his wife Julie Andrews, died Thursday morning with Andrews and his grown children at his bedside, reports Variety. He was 88. No further details have been provided. Born in Tulsa, Okla., but with a grandfather and father in the Hollywood movie business, William Blake Crump (the name Edwards came later) practically had celluloid flowing through his veins. After graduation from Beverly Hills High and World War II duty in the Coast Guard, Edwards sold two scenarios for Westerns.

O2 Arena, London
Fans and worshippers of Julie Andrews had their devotion fairly seriously tested this weekend at London's O2 Arena, in which the great singer and icon was making her first live London appearance in decades. As we crammed into that vast venue, where Elizabeth Taylor was seen being wheeled into the VIP area, the audience was clearly anticipating going into an ecstatic state described on fan sites as "beyond gay", perhaps beyond showbusiness itself.
It wasn't long ago that followers had been outraged by a recent television documentary about the magazine The Lady, in which the new editor, Rachel Johnson, remarked that a proposed cover photo of Andrews looked like the occupant of an "open casket". Sadly, this was the photograph on the souvenir programme, and this cheesy, sedate evening did have about it a whiff of Jarlsberg and formaldehyde.
Yet this was not really when Andrews was singing or reminiscing,...
