Some of you may be asking yourselves, “What’s The Guyver?” But, I suspect if you were a kid in the nineties, you know Exactly who and what The Guyver is.
When I was growing up, my parents subscribed to the Canadian version of HBO, which was called The Movie Network. The mixture of programming on the channel was eclectic, to say the least, and the blockbusters were padded out with many direct-to-video tiles, usually in the erotic thriller or action genres. Folks like Shannon Tweed, Lorenzo Lamas, and others became pretty common to see pop up on the channel. Occasionally, one of these movies would feature a bigger star and sometimes turn out to be a real gem.
With that in mind, I remember vividly as a kid tuning in to watch The Guyver because it was promoted as a superhero movie starring Mark Hamill. While that’s maybe “partly” true,...

Director Fred Dekker’s 1987 cult classic monster mash The Monster Squad (watch it Here) features variations of the classic Universal Monsters characters Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, and the Gillman, but it wasn’t actually a Universal production. So to avoid getting in trouble with Universal, the movie’s effects crew at the Stan Winston Studio had to create their own specific designs of the creatures… but that didn’t stop them from sneaking homages to the original monsters in there. It has been known for a while now that designers Steve Wang and Matt Rose hid the face of the original Creature from the Black Lagoon somewhere on the neck of their Gillman suit. Now – as pointed out by Monster Squad super-fan Shawn Robare of Plastic Rocket Pop – the exact location of that face has been found!

With a love of cinema woven into its DNA, The Monster Squad helped indoctrinate ’80s kids to the classic monsters. The generation that grew up watching it on home video and HBO look back on the 1987 film with the same reverence director Fred Dekker had for the Universal monster movies, and now they’re passing it down in a similar fashion. There’s no better way to introduce the next generation than with the new 4K edition.
Conceived as “The Little Rascals meets the Universal Monsters,” the cleverly-plotted film clocks in at a tight 82 minutes. The punchy script by Dekker and Shane Black doesn’t have an ounce of fat on it, save for the casual homophobia, misogyny, and body shaming of the time. Drawing inspiration from Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, human characters offer well-placed levity and a bevy of memorable one-liners, but the monsters are played straight.

Welcome back, dear readers! We’ve nearly made it through another week and December is (quite literally) just right around the corner. And since the holiday season is pretty much upon us, we’re back with another installment of our annual Holiday Gift Guide. For today, I’m celebrating a handful of books that I have either had the chance to check out this year and fell in love with, or several titles that I’m confident genre fans will love that I just haven’t had a chance to check out yet for myself.
To make things easier, I’ve sorted the books into two categories: non-ficton and fiction. And also, just so everything is on the up-and-up, I want to mention that I did include my own latest book in today’s edition of the Hgg just because the artists featured in this second volume of Monsters, Makeup...

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” got a big boost in the Oscar race for Best Makeup and Hairstyling by winning both of its bids at the guild honors on April 3. The Netflix film was honored for its period makeup and period hairstyling at the 8th annual Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Saturday.
One of its Oscar rivals – “Pinocchio” — claimed the special effects prize. Two of the other Oscar nominees were shut out as “Hillbilly Elegy” lost all three of its races here and “Mank” was blanked twice over. The fifth contender at the Academy Awards, “Emma,” was overlooked by the guild.
Conversely the other big winner at the Muahs Awards, “Bird of Prey,” was snubbed by the makeup and hairstyling branch of the academy. It won both contemporary categories here.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations on February 18. But don’t look for four-time contender “Bill & Ted Face the Music” or three-timer “Mulan” on the list of Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling when that roster is revealed on March 15. They didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.
Of the 10 films that remain in the running at the Oscars, “Hillbilly Elegy” reaped three bids with the guild; “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Mank” earned two apiece; and “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey” and “Pinocchio” have one each.
The other four films shortlisted by the makeup artists and hair stylists branch of the academy — “Emma,” “The Glorias,”
“The Little Things” and “One Night in Miami” — were snubbed by the guild.

Slamdance has awarded its grand prize for screenwriting to Tamra Teig and Michael Lipoma for their feature screenplay “The Fall.”
The festival announced a dozen prizes Thursday night during a ceremony hosted by Writers Guild of America West across feature film, horror/thriller, TV pilot and short film categories. Slamdance awarded more than $16,000 to winners across all categories.
“The Fall” is a historical drama set in East Berlin in 1989, where a single mother is forced to become a spy to save her son after he’s framed for murder. Her act of revenge, woven into historic events, leads to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
“With over 4,200 submissions this year, our judges were challenged by a wealth of exciting new writers to choose from,” said Slamdance president Peter Baxter. “Many plugged into the passion and concern around socially conscious themes our world is currently dealing with in raw, fun and unique ways.

I never had a chance to meet Matt Rose in person, but we had become friends over the last few years via emails and a few phone calls, and he was somebody who you felt like you knew for a lifetime even after one conversation. For those who may not know, I started working on a series of books celebrating the lives of special effects artists in 2016, which is how I connected with Matt, and his story was (and still is) set to be a part of the next installment that should hopefully be out later this year. Tragically, though, Matt Rose passed away this weekend, and it breaks my heart that he won’t be here to enjoy seeing his career commemorated in print, because he deserved to get to enjoy that moment. So, I thought I would take this moment to pay tribute to Matt here and let...

If you’re a horror fan, then chances are you love The Monster Squad. With that in mind, I think anyone who generally reads a genre website already has a pretty good grasp on just why The Monster Squad has endured for over 30 years, becoming even more popular now than it was three decades ago, and so going into André Gower’s documentary, Wolfman’s Got Nards, I was intrigued to see what he was going to bring to the table for his directorial debut, because I felt like we’d seen a good amount of material out there thus far that has done a solid job of diving into the 1987 horror comedy.
But as Wolfman’s Got Nards weaves through a variety of talking head segments, Q&A footage, and delightful animatics, it becomes clear why Gower is the perfect person to capture all the happenings that coincided with...

Undoubtedly, one of the most beloved genre movies to come out of 1987 was Fred Dekker’s The Monster Squad, a perfect blend of humor, heart, and affection for the classic monsters so many of us grew up on. And while it may not have done great business at the box office when it was released in August of that year, The Monster Squad has deservedly become a true cult classic, and remains a brilliant gateway horror experience for younger viewers who are just becoming initiated in the ways of genre cinema.
With The Monster Squad’s 30th anniversary nearly upon us, and with our “Class of 1987” celebration currently in full swing, I thought this would make for a splendid opportunity to chat with the actors who put the “Monster” in “The Monster Squad” in the first place: Tom Noonan (“Frankenstein’s Monster”), Duncan Regehr (“Count Dracula”), Tom Woodruff Jr. (“the...

Of all the ways Jason Voorhees has been depicted in the Friday the 13th franchise, it his perhaps his appearance in The Final Chapter that is the most iconic. The incredible makeup effects by Tom Savini gave viewers an unforgettable look at Jason both beneath and above the hockey mask, and those frightening features are captured beautifully by Elite Creature Collectibles and Cinemaquette's 1:1 ratio Jason Voorhees bust, which is teased in new photos following its eye-catching display at last year's San Diego Comic-Con.
Now available to pre-order at Cinemaquette, this Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter Jason Voorhees bust stands over 30 inches tall and features a removable hockey mask. The collectible will be priced at $1550 as an early bird special through March 18th, after which it will be available for $1700. Each bust comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by Savini himself.

Remember those crazy nightmares that Bruce Wayne was having in Batman v Superman? Well, there was a crazy looking Bat-creature that was supposed to be in one of those, and thanks to production designer Patrick Tatopoulos, you can see what that creature was going to look like. I love the wicked and terrifying look of the creature that is basically Batman as a monster. There was just no place in the story for it. The first thing I thought of when I saw the art was a quote from Stephen King's It, where Pennywise the Clown says, "Kiss me fat boy!" Then my mind immediately changed it to the creature saying to Bruce Wayne, "Kiss me bat boy!"

We may remember Independence Day, The Matrix, The Phantom Menace. But what about these forgotten 90s sci-fi films? And are any worth seeing?
Think back to the science fiction cinema of the 1990s, and some of the decade's biggest box-office hits will immediately spring to mind: The Phantom Menace, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Men In Black, Armageddon and Terminator 2 were all in the top 20 most lucrative films of the era.
But what about the sci-fi films of the 1990s that failed to make even close to the same cultural and financial impact of those big hitters? These are the films this list is devoted to - the flops, the straight-to-video releases, the low-budget and critically-derided. We've picked 50 live-action films that fit these criteria, and dug them up to see whether they're still worth watching in the 21st century.

Tim Burton, Joel Schumacher, Christopher Nolan, and Zack Snyder have all done what most superhero junkies could only dream of doing: direct a Batman movie. But there was one other filmmaker privileged enough to have suited up the masked manhunter for cinema, achieving almost overnight success in 2003 and a cult classic amongst Batman fans—without the “superpowers” of a million dollar budget or the tyranny of studio executives. The director: Sandy Collora. The film: Batman: Dead End.
“Behind The Mask”, a 90-minute documentary on the life and career of Sandy Collora, was shown recently at Monsterpalooza in Burbank, CA, telling the story of the indie filmmaker’s refusal to “sell out” to major studios and finding satisfaction in directing his own films.

If you watch any war documentaries—you can feel the realism of the firefights and soldiers during conflicts. Now just add invading space aliens to a war.
Director Jabbar Raisani brought a sci-fi alien war on Earth in a documentary point of view in “Alien Outpost.” The film follows documentarians filming a group of soldiers defending a military outpost from aliens in the Middle East.
Latino-Review had an exclusive phone interview with the first-time director and “Games of Thrones” special effects supervisor on bringing the sci-fi war documentary to life.
“Alien Outpost” is currently in select theaters, VOD, Amazon Instant Video and iTunes.
Latino-Review: Let’s start with this—how you came up with the concept of “Alien Outpost?”
Jabbar Raisani: Sure. I come from a military background. My dad was twenty years in the Air Force and he was a colonel when he retired. The co-writer, Blake Clifton,...

I have a really cool and interesting piece of Star Wars fan art for you to check out that features a redesign of Darth Vader. It was created by Steve Wang, and he simply calls it "Vader." He included the following note:
"Vader force controlling a lightstar/mini-deathstar."
I really like this design. Even though it gives us a very different look at the villain, it still manages to capture Vader's menacing spirit. ...

Cinelinx's Victor Medina speaks with David Hayter about his new film Wolves and his prolific career!
David Hayter is known to millions as the iconic voice of Solid Snake in the Metal Gear video game series, but you’ll also likely recognize his name as the screenwriter of such hit films as X-Men, X2: X-Men United, The Scorpion King, and Watchmen. This month, Hayter is making his directorial debut with Wolves, a werewolf horror flick now available through Video On Demand, with a theatrical release on November 14. Hayter recently sat down for an interview in which he discussed his new film, sitting in the director’s chair for the first time, and his career.
Q: There was a pre-release screening of Wolves in Manhattan during the New York Comic Con. What was the response?
Hayter: It was great. There were a lot of hard core fans of me, and they are always very nice.

I’d have to say that 1987 was one of my favorite years to be a young movie fan. Because we didn’t have a ton of money, my mom and I would spend most of our weekends at the drive-in taking in double features of all kinds of now-classic films, which included John McTiernan’s eternally badass Predator.
Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, Bill Duke, Shane Black, Sonny Landham and Kevin Peter Hall as the titular intergalactic hunter, Predator opened at number one the weekend of June 12th despite receiving a lackluster response from critics at the time. Predator’s theatrical success would continue for another six weeks, with McTiernan’s genre-bending blockbuster eventually taking in almost $60 million during its run that summer.
Predator’s run wouldn’t end there though- there was also the release of the successful 1990 sequel Predator 2 starring Danny Glover and Gary Busey,...

Before the award-winning creature designer, Steve Wang, designed the look of the Predator that we all know and love, there was a much different version conceived with "backward bent reptilian legs, extended arms" and an insect-like facial sculpt. That original version of the monster didn't require a tall actor like Kevin Peter Hall, who played the final version of the monster, so they hired then-newcomer, Jean-Claude Van Damme ("The Quest"). In the video below, special effects guru, Steve Johnson, recounts the challenges the Muscles From Brussels encountered on his first big Hollywood production. There's also some rare footage of the Sudden Death actor in the original monster suits. Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in this action-packed adventure story of fighting men pitted against an unseen enemy, a force more powerful than their fiercest weapons. Recruited by the CIA to rescue hostages held by guerrilla fighters in a Central American country, Schwarzenegger and...

I remember back in the early 1990′s watching the Guyver movies and loving the fact it had lots of Martial Arts action. I just recently bought The DVD and thought i would do a feature post about The Guyver. I know it’s a little cheesy, but that’s just the time period, cant be helped.
The first movie was The Guyver “Mutronics”, loosely based on the Japanese manga series about a lad who finds an alien artifact called The Unit which changes him into an alien-hybrid called The Guyver.
Mutronics Plot:
CIA agent Max Reed (Mark Hamill) witnesses Dr. Tetsu Segawa—a researcher for the mysterious Kronos Corporation—being murdered. Dr. Segawa had stolen an alien device known as “the Guyver” from Kronos. College student Sean Barker, whose girlfriend’s father was Dr. Segawa, finds the Guyver’s hiding spot while watching the forensic team investigating the crime scene.

Eddie Yang's artwork has been showcased on our site numerous times, as his artistic capabilities have been used to help shape some of the biggest comic book movies in the past decade, such as Iron Man, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Amazing Spider-Man. His talents were cultivated over the past few decades by working with make-up effects gurus, like Rick Baker and Stan Winston. This past year Eddie joined forces with, Steve Wang, a highly acclaimed artist that also worked with Academy Award winners Stan Winston and Rick Baker, as well as the legendary Dick Smith. Steve is perhaps best known for designing one of the most iconic creatures to grace the silver screen, "The Predator." We know that not everyone loves Kickstarter. I don’t even know if I love Kickstarter. I know that I do like the idea of filmmakers getting financing from the fans and giving back something in return as well as a general sense of community. One of the highlight films of last year was Absentia, which Michael & I talked about on the podcast last year. That film not only starred Doug Jones but was also birthed from Kickstarter as well.

The Ryan Gosling-starring Drive, our film of 2011, is now on DVD and Blu-ray. But how does it compare to the 1997 Mark Dacascos film of the same name…?

The set crew: Steve Wang, Matt Rose, Shane Mahan, Brian Simpson, Richard Landon and me. Stan Winston would be with us, supervising the set work, understanding that we would only be gone for two weeks. At least that is what our work visas indicated. Palenque, Mexico was not a location easily reached. It required one flight from Los Angeles to Mexico City, another to Villa Hermosa, and finally a long ride in a Volkswagen bus through miles of rough country until we reached our hotel that was, from what we were told, the best in the area. It sat in a large clearing, surrounded by trees; two wings of rooms branched out from a central building that housed a restaurant/bar. Later, we discovered that Arnold Schwarzenegger had taken over the entire upper conference room and had...
