“Goze” is a term that stands for a woman, usually, but not necessarily blind, who works as a travelling musician and singer. The tradition dates at least back to the Edo period, and it was present in the rural areas from Kyushu island in the south to Yamagata and Fukushima prefectures in the north. It was active well into the second half of the 20th century when the last professional goze Haru Kobayashi retired from her work in 1978. “The Last Goze”, directed by Masaharu Takizawa, is a biopic about her, and too bad it is not a good movie.
“The Last Goze” is screening at Toronto Japanese Film Festival
The movie follows her from her birth, through her childhood and goze training and apprenticeships with different mentors, in the early adulthood and the beginning of her career as an independent artist, guild member and group leader. It starts with a warning printed on the screen,...

Sake Bomb is the name of a drinking game, where you place a cup of sake on two chopsticks, over a big glass of beer and then you pull the chopsticks, the sake drops into the beer and you drink it as fast as you can. It even featured at The Brewing Art as the most intriguing combination of drinks in Western countries in the early 2010s. Inspired by this mixture of American and Japanese drink, Junya Sakino directs a comedy concerning the mixture of Asians and Americans within the USA and the tragicomical situations that arise from the coexistence of two very different cultures. Let’s take a closer look though.
Naoto is a shy and somewhat naive young man who works at a sake distillery in Japan. At some point, he inherits the business and at the same time gets a week of vacation before he takes over.

– “So why did you become a yakuza?”
– “Do you need a reason to become a yakuza in this country?”
When Shoichi Yomi (Hiroyuki Watanabe) takes on a kamikaze mission to eradicate a rival crime faction single-handedly, it ends tragically with him in a coma, tied to a hospital bed.
10 years later, Yomi wakes up to everyone’s surprise, only to see that the power lines have shifted, and new alliances formed. He seeks out his old buddy Eto (Tatsuo Yamada), but it becomes clear soon that too many people would have preferred for him to stay comatose. Yomi is banished to Hiroshima on some false pretence, where he starts putting together a comeback and revenge plot to settle the debt once and for all.
“Shinjuku Outlaw” is an deceptively ordinary Miike film. It’s one of Miike’s numerous V-Cinema (straight to video) entries that deals its cards fast and dirty.

Junya Sakino is a new japanese director, that has previously worked as a cinematographer and producer, both in Japan and the Us. On the occasion of the release of his first feature film, Sake Bomb he answered some of my questions. I will not get into further details about him as the interview is quite biographical
First of all, I would like to congratulate you on your first feature film, Sake bomb. Could you tell us a bit about the path that brought you from Japan to the U.S and the making of this movie.?
I was born and raised in Japan and decided to move to Los Angeles to purse a filmmaking career. It’s not that I didn’t consider staying in Japan, but it made sense for me that there were a lot of universities that offered film studies, so my natural instinct was just to...

When Everly (Hayek) betrays her sadistic mob boss Taiko (Watanabe), he sends a group of his most brutal men to torture and kill her. When she manages to get the upper hand and survives, she finds herself trapped in the apartment awaiting the next attempt on her life.
It’s a brave move to set a movie in an apartment which is basically one room, and not allow the main actor to leave it. There are a few cheats to make the world of Everly feel that bit more bigger, though claustrophobic but for the most part, this is about a strategic war in an apartment. While the action is thick and fast though, Everly is also about being a mother,...

Director: Joe Lynch; Screenwriter: Yale Hannon; Starring: Salma Hayek, Hiroyuki Watanabe, Laura Cepeda, Togo Igawa; Running time: 92 mins; Certificate: 18
Maybe it was because Salma Hayek made a compelling badass in Oliver Stone's Savages that she signed up for the bullet-riddled, entirely brain-free splatter-fest that is Everly. But she doesn't get to wear a suit here and strut with intent. Instead, director Joe Lynch strips her from scene one, makes her crawl on the floor, ties her up, cages her and generally makes her the subject of every sordid violent fantasy he can think of. And, for what? Even slobbering Salma fans might come away feeling frustrated at the lack of an x-rated payoff.
Quentin Tarantino is the obvious standard-bearer for Lynch, who has previously directed B-movie shorts and one feature dubiously titled Knights of Badassdom (straight-to-video), but whereas Qt lavishes as much attention on characterisation as bloodletting, Lynch doesn't see the need.

Everly - Radius-twc - Blu-ray and DVD Director: Joe Lynch Cast: Salma Hayek, Hiroyuki Watanabe, Jennifer Blanc, Togo Igawa Everly stars Salma Hayek as the kept girlfriend of a gangster who decides to finally break free of her terrible life. Having typed that, it sounds like a standard Sundance drama, so I should probably point out that breaking free of her life involves guns and killing wave after wave of people who are hired to try and kill her. Hayek is fantastic in the movie, and it's clear she has plenty of fun taking on the kick-ass role, no matter how absurd things get. And it does get absurd. The whole thing has a weird sense of humor and a pretty terrific sense of action and humor, feeling more like a late '80s cult movie than most modern...

Everly, Baby: Lynch’s Grindhouse Glory Shoots Blanks
If Pam Grier had starred in a 1970’s version of Oldboy directed by Jack Hill, it probably would’ve looked something like Everly, actor/producer/editor/cinematographer Joe Lynch’s sophomore effort as film director. Playing like an homage to those cheapie exploitation classics of the vintage grindhouse era, there’s an element of admiration for Lynch’s product, which, at least superficially, appears to honor its battered but resilient female protagonist by eschewing gratuitous nudity and attempting to grant her a character arc that extends beyond her desirable body (though this is accomplished only via typical fashion, i.e. her maternal instinct). But by keeping the action of the film confined to one rundown, grimy apartment in a complex apparently on lockdown a la The Raid or Dredd, no matter of grisly violence can secure our visual absorption through the film’s already slim running time.

"Either you help me, or shut the f*ck up," says Everly (Salma Hayek) to one of the men left partially alive in her swank bordello apartment after she just laid waste to the rest of the men that had taken turns raping her. You see, Everly has been a sex slave for the past four years along with several other women occupying the same floor in the same apartment building, working under the thumb of Taiko (Hiroyuki Watanabe), an ex lover and dangerous mob boss. However, when Taiko threatens her family, Everly doesn't hesitate to do what's necessary to keep her mother and daughter safe. Only problem is, she's trapped in this apartment building and they are running for their lives in the streets. What's a girl to doc Played as a hard-r actioner with attempted doses of humor, director Joe Lynch isn't entirely able to capture the same...

Joe Lynch's Everly opens with the screams of a sex slave played by Salma Hayek. It seems impossible things for her could get much worse — but they do. Emboldened by a detective who's pledged to wrest her from gangster Taiko (Hiroyuki Watanabe), Hayek's Everly has chosen today to fight for freedom. Good luck, lady.
Taiko has an arsenal: killer dogs, machine-gunning brutes, sai-stabbing prostitutes, and a cruel torturer who calls himself The Sadist (Togo Igawa), all happy to make house calls. Forget finding her long-lost mom and five-year-old daughter (Laura Cepeda and Aisha Ayamah) — Everly can't even escape from her own apartment.

Today we have a new trailer for Salma Hayek's upcoming "Everly" action thriller, which takes place entirely in one apartment and has been compared to "Die Hard." Check it out below. Plot: It's Christmas time, but all is not well in the world of Everly (Hayek). A call girl by trade, Everly has turned against her gangster boss Taiko (Hiroyuki Watanabe) and become a police informant. In response, Taiko has put out a hit on Everly and her family. Soon, every criminal in town wants to cash in. Everly's survival instincts quickly kick in as she matches wits and firepower with Taiko and a seemingly endless stream of killers. "Everly" is directed by Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2) from a script by Yale Hannon that ended up on the Black List, which is a list of the best unproduced screenplays. Remember the execrable NRA ad from last year that showed a hot woman being compared to and brandishing an automatic rifle? Welcome to the movie-trailer equivalent of that. Salma Hayek is a lean, mean, aesthetically-pleasing shooting machine in the first official preview for "Everly" (above), which centers on a call girl (Hayek) who's forced to fend off an army of assassins after she informs on her gangster boss (Hiroyuki Watanabe). What did I take away from the trailer? Here's a Gif that sums it up: Guns are sexy! It's a message Hollywood action films have been feeding us for decades, and it's indicative of the culture in which we live that most of us don't think twice when we see, for example, Salma Hayek shoving a revolver between her boobs in an image that's obviously designed to titillate. Point is: why are people outraged over that execrable NRA ad and...

The first international trailer for the female-centric actioner, Everly, landed late last year and promised a helluva blood-soaked caper. With that memorable teaser still in mind, it seemed impossible for any future previews to tweak the footage in an even more enticing way. That, however, is exactly the case with this latest U.S. trailer that made its way online earlier today.

Her early forays into the work of mid-90s Robert Rodriguez movies put Salma Hayek firmly on the Hollywood map. From her capable and fiery sidekick in Desperado right through to her voluptuous blood-sucking hell fiend in From Dusk Till Dawn, her inner badass has been teased for the best part of twenty years.
