It’s too bad that Will Smith’s new movie, Emancipation (in theaters now, and set to be released on Apple+ Dec. 9), has to go down as his first movie since The Slap, because it doesn’t really make sense as a movie seen through that lens. This isn’t the humbled bit of reputation laundering that some people likely expect it to be, the kind of ennobling period piece meant to make people forget the actor’s real-life indiscretions or help him claim some kind of triumphant comeback (to...

Significant details about Defy Media’s financial situation and its effects on former employees and creators have come to light in the wake of Defy’s abrupt closure on Nov. 6, partially thanks to two lawsuits filed against the company this week.
The first lawsuit: Former Defy employee Georgina Guinane filed a class-action suit Nov. 13 on behalf of herself and all other Defy employees whose employment was severed in the unexpected mass layoff last week. Guinane is alleging Defy did not provide employees with the 60 days' written notice of layoff required by the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (Warn Act), and therefore they’re owed what they normally would have been paid for 60 days of work.
The second lawsuit: David Rath and Kara Welker, owners of talent agency Generate Holdings, Inc., which was originally acquired by Alloy Digital in late 2011, filed suit Nov. 14 alleging Defy owes money to the creators Rath and Welker manage,...

Actress Krysten Ritter was set to executive-produce The Demons of Dorian Gunn, a supernatural comedy for network Pop.
Jessica Jones star Krysten Ritter may portray television’s most enigmatically misanthropic Marvel hero onscreen, but she’s also fielding multiple creative outlets away from the camera. At the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, TV is invading the schedule in a whole new way. The Park City film fest has previously dabbled in what’s possible on the small screen, but this year marks the launch of the Indie Episodics section — which will spotlight TV pilots that mostly lack mainstream distribution.
The selections include “America to Me,” a new docu-series by “Hoop Dreams” director Steve James; as well as “The Mortified Guide,” a screen adaptation of the popular stage show “Mortified,” spotlighting the most embarrassing true stories of adolescence. There’s also “This Close,” showcasing star/creators Josh Feldman and Shoshannah Stern (both of whom are deaf), and “Franchesca,” featuring digital star and “The Nightly Show” writer/contributor Franchesca Ramsey.
This marks a major change for Sundance, and a renewed commitment to independent television. While Sundance has featured TV programming since the premiere of “Top of the Lake” in...

I cannot believe that even the most devout American fascist has not danced or punched their fist in the air to a song created by African American musicians; at a prom, at a frat party or a wedding. "1999" by Prince, "Rock n Roll" by Chuck Berry, "Nutbush City Limits" by Ike and Tina Turner. Black music is an ever-present treatise on American life.
In the new season of New York galleries, Kara Walker, Sanford Biggers and Mark Thomas Gibson are Black American artists who "Keep on Pushing."*

After the Met Gala in May 2014, a video showing Solange Knowles beating up Jay Z, her brother-in-law, in an elevator quickly went viral. Solange and Jay were joined in the elevator by Beyoncé and the couple's bodyguard, who had to physically restrain Solange at multiple points during their elevator ride. Since the video had no sound (it was taken from a security camera), there is little insight into what was said and why Beyoncé's sister reacted so violently. Of course, that hasn't stopped just about every person on the Internet from speculating about what went down. Theories range from Solange getting sparked by an argument with Rachel Roy to Solange acting out after Jay dissed her friends and tried to leave for a different afterparty without his wife. We've gathered up the top explanations below and decided which is most likely the closest we'll ever get to the truth.

Comedy Central’s latest development slate is diverse in more ways than one.
Not only has the cable network put together several new series with performers of color at the center, but the three shows picked up Tuesday by Comedy Central are all very different.
Ordered to series are the stand-up/musical show “The New Negroes,” the comedy game show “Taskmaster” and the scripted comedy “Corporate.” In development are shows from creators including Awkwafina, Neal Brennan, Arturo Castro, Franchesca Ramsey, Noël Wells and Flint Wainess, among others.
“The network when I got here was pretty traditionally targeted toward young white guys, both in terms of who the audience was and who was creating the shows for the audience,” said Comedy Central president Kent Alterman. “We started changing that a few years ago by expanding that into having funny women on the network, with Amy Schumer and Broad City and a lot more since.

The New Negress Film Society is small: A five-member collective, formed to feature work by and about black women.
But since its founding in 2013, its members have received filmmaking prizes that include a Gotham Awards grant, the Sundance Institute Director’s Lab, and the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Discovery Award, and their works have screened at festivals including Sundance, SXSW, and Rotterdam.
That’s an extraordinary return rate for the Brooklyn-based group, which began as a screening of short films organized by filmmakers Ja’Tovia Gary and Kumi James. Today, the group comprises Gary, Frances Bodomo, Dyani Douze, Chanelle Aponte Pearson, and Stefani Saintonge. (James left the group when she moved to Los Angeles.)

Former WB Network CEO Jordan Levin and former Regency Television president Pete Aronson have joined forces to launch a management-production company dubbed Generate in partnership with producer Mike Karz and managers Dave Rath and Kara Welker. The company has signed a multiyear development pact with MTV Networks to create all manner of new content for Viacom's wide-ranging portfolio of cable, broadband and mobile content platforms. The guiding principal behind the company is to nurture creative ideas and talent in a more organic way than the traditional film or TV development processes, Levin said. The plan is to let the ideas dictate what form they take -- i.e. traditional TV series, feature films or shortform content for Web and broadband channels -- rather than developing projects to suit a particular distribution platform from the get-go, Levin said.
