Ignored, maligned and hammered out into an ‘Alan Smithee’ extended cut for TV, David Lynch’s outstanding Sci-fi epic arrives on 4K Ultra HD, finally achieving the visual opulence on home video that it had in 70mm prints at the end of 1984. The fractured, de-Lynched storyline can be argued over, but the amazing design and arresting characterizations never fail to impress — Lynch attracted a world-class cast of movie stars and used them well. Even if it’s described as a hundred fragmented scenes from a larger narrative, they’re superlative fragments. Lynch should have been authorized to make an alternate cut, his own completely personal ‘impressionist’ version of the Frank Herbert story.

Whoops! Kim Kardashian West is pretty good about keeping secrets -- but not this time.
The 37-year-old reality star appeared on Wednesday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show where she let slip that she and husband Kanye West are expecting a baby girl via surrogate.
“My daughter thinks she’s really tricky,” Kim said of her 4-year-old daughter, North West. “We had a baby shower over the weekend, and I thought, ‘You know, I really do want to have a baby shower because I want her to feel that something’s coming and for her to really understand it.’ So people brought toys and gifts and she was opening them all up the next day. She said, ‘Mom, since baby sister’s not here, I think I need all of the toys in my room and I’ll play with them and just make sure they’re all Ok for baby sister.’”

A few years ago the editors of Shadowlocked asked me to compile a list of what was initially to be, the ten greatest movie matte paintings of all time. A mere ten selections was too slim by a long shot, so my list stretched considerably to twenty, then thirty and finally a nice round fifty entries. Even with that number I found it wasn’t easy to narrow down a suitably wide ranging showcase of motion picture matte art that best represented the artform. So with that in mind, and due to the surprising popularity of that 2012 Shadowlocked list (which is well worth a visit, here Ed), I’ve assembled a further fifty wonderful examples of this vast, vital and more extensively utilised than you’d imagine – though now sadly ‘dead and buried’ – movie magic.
It would of course be so easy to simply concentrate on the well known, iconic,...

The trademark bullwhip used by Harrison Ford during his 1981 debut as Indiana Jones is set to go under the hammer in London later this month.
Jones famously cracked the brown leather whip throughout his time playing the adventurer, and the specially crafted item, which appeared in the hero's first outing in Raiders of the Lost Ark, is now up for sale.
The whip will be accompanied by a letter from the film's special effects boss Kit West, confirming the piece's authenticity, when it goes up as a lot at Bonhams auction house in the U.K. capital on 15 December.
The estimate price is between $48,000 (£30,000) and $56,000 (£35,000).
