The American Film Institute (AFI) announced today two different programs geared toward increasing the number of women cinematographers working in Hollywood. Sponsored by 21st Century Fox, the programs will be tuition-free and are geared toward women directors of photography at two very different stages of their careers.
The first program, the AFI Cinematography Introductory Intensive for Women (Ciiw), will take place on August 3-6, at the AFI campus and is for women interested in careers as cinematographers. The four-day class consists of workshops, discussions and screenings designed to encourage participants to continue down the path, via studies and practical experience, to becoming a cinematographer. The intensive crash course is being taught by a mix of AFI faculty and “master-level guests.”
Submissions open today, June 4, and the deadline to apply is June 15.

Chicago – Women in Film Chicago is one of the greatest Midwest advocates for women filmmakers. Every year, they present “Focus Awards” to honor notable female breakthroughs in the film and television business. Last October, they awarded their 2013 Focus Awards to Ky Dickens, Katy Mindeman and Lisa Wiegand.
Woman in Film Chicago will have their 2014 Kick-off Party on January 23rd, 2014 (details below). HollywoodChicago.com was at the Focus Awards last October at the Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago, and got interviews with each of the honorees.
Ky Dickens, Director of “Sole Survivor”
2013 was a great year for Ky Dickens. She released her documentary “Sole Survivor” – a meditation and reflection that profiled a few single individuals that have survived a plane crash – and the film was picked up by CNN Films. She also won Best Picture at the recent Best of the Midwest Awards. Ms. Dickens has been a filmmaker since her vital documentary debut,...

As everyone waits for the results of the Oscars to be announced, here’s your chance to vote in the unofficial, but arguably more interesting, Whedonverse equivalent awards. (Call them the “Josscars”.) Maybe there’s an alternate universe where these are the Oscars. Except for the Best Picture category, the nominees were only posted yesterday, and the link was only posted to Whedonesque today, so there’s not much time to vote. The awards are open until 7pm Est (midnight GMT), so unfortunately this post is not much more timely than Oz’s “We’re here to save you.” in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode ‘Gingerbread’…
The awards are organised by whyiwatch, who (if there were such a category) would definitely be a strong contender for Best Fan Campaign, for their classy, stylish Dollhouse site.
There are only 4-6 nominations in each category, which inevitably leaves out plenty of deserving nominees,...

Away We Go - Giveaway
I appreciate this film as a quiet examination into the lives of two people who are surrounded by chaos.
What’s most fascinating about Away We Go is that Sam Mendes went from Revolutionary Road to this. From a depressing portrait on suburban life to a picture that dabbles in a little drama and a little comedy the movie works because of co-writers Dave Eggers (A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and the upcoming film Where The Wild Things Are) and his wife Vendela Vida.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly—Sf and genre fans know and love Joss Whedon, and his latest series, Dollhouse, has its second season premiere on Fox this Friday (i.e. tomorrow), September 25 at 9 p.m. Est/Pst. In “Vows,” which picks up a few months after the first season finale, Echo (Eliza Dushku)—who now sporadically remembers past “imprints” due to Alpha’s (Alan Tudyk) machinations—weds a wealthy and charismatic British businessmen (Jamie Bamber) tied to one of Agent Ballard’s (Tahmoh Penikett) open FBI cases. Dr. Saunders (Amy Acker) struggles with being an Active and makes Topher (Fran Kranz) the target of her aggression. Boyd (Harry Lennix) mixes business with pleasure in a risky venture. And Adelle (Olivia Williams) makes Ballard an offer he can’t refuse.
