Much of our lurid film community is of the belief that America’s acting prowess died with its classic stars like Marlon Brando, James Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, and Grace Kelly. However, I’m here to argue that America’s actors are stronger than ever and can match up toe to toe with the likes of both Europe and Asia.
The list will be split into two parts: in part one, I delve into the modern world of Hollywood actors with actresses soon to follow in part two.
Part one: Top Ten Actors Working In Hollywood Today
Actor With The Most Potential To Hit It Big: Paddy Considine
Before I begin the list, I want to take a moment to discuss an actor whom I believe has enormous potential. While not American born, British actor Paddy Considine has been in his fair share of American films like In America,...

Aaron Sorkin seems to be going from strength to strength. Already greatly esteemed from his massively impressive and hugely influential writing work on The West Wing, he has since gone on to win an Oscar for The Social Network and further TV and film projects as varied as Studio 60, Charlie Wilson’s War and Moneyball. His cameo in Tina Fey’s excellent 30 Rock played on the “walk and talk” style he so deftly established for The West Wing and with all of this under his belt he is now working on a new series for HBO, recently re-titled “Newsroom”, from the earlier but slightly unwieldly working title “More As This Story Develops”.
Newsroom will see Jeff Daniels (Dumb and Dummer) as show host Will McCallister and Sam Waterston (Law and Order) as network President Charlie Skinner alongside Emily Mortimer and Olivia Munn, with Sorkin’s now distinctive intelligent dialogue...

Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity, and the DreamWorks Pictures movie The Help, are joining forces this holiday season to help feed Americans facing hunger. Coinciding with the DVD/Blu-ray release of The Help on December 6, a national donation campaign will run from December 1 to December 11 to generate food and funds to help feed the 1 in 6 people in the United States who do not have enough to eat.
“The economic downturn really hurt American families,” said Feeding America Director of Media Relations Ross Fraser. “As a nation, we need to come together to help our neighbors who are struggling to make ends meet. The collaboration between Feeding America and the producers of The Help is a great example of how we can come together to make a difference.”

So Mirror, Mirror wasn’t what everyone expected it to be. Okay maybe it was but tenfold, but Julia Roberts can’t let that weigh down on her. So the actress is making the move back to comedy. Let’s just hope that this isn’t another Larry Crowne. According to THR, Roberts has signed on to produce and star in the new workplace comedy titled Second Act. The project, which does not have a writer or director on board, centers on a woman who has never worked and is forced to take a job. ts will produce via her Red Om Films label.
So a fish out of water workplace comedy eh? Sounds promising. But that is what many thought when Roberts co-starred with Tom Hanks in Larry Crowne. The pairing sounded great, especially since they have already worked together on Charlie Wilson’s War. But considering how much of a flop Crowne was,...

Legendary two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks returns behind the camera for the only the second time in his distinguished feature film career. Arriving fifteen years after his directorial debut, That Thing You Do!, Larry Crowne sees Hanks take the title role – a blue-collar divorcee who finds himself laid off from his store job in the midst of the global economic recession. To cope, he decides to go back to college as a mature student and gain a degree. Enrolling in two classes – economics and public speaking – he not only becomes a favourite of fellow pupil Talia (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) but even takes a shine to his tutor, the frosty Mercedes Tainoit (Julia Roberts).
Reuniting Hanks with Roberts – last seen together in Charlie Wilson’s War – Larry Crowne emerges as a charming romantic comedy that deals with contemporary issues in a deft way. Below Hanks talks about why it took so long to direct again,...

Chicago – “Larry Crowne” is a would-be crowd-pleaser that’s filled to the brim with chipper laughter. It’s the sort of laughter often heard on morning news programs, where overpaid anchors giggle and quip while laughing all the way to the bank. Yet very little of “Crowne’”s onscreen gaiety transfers to the bored, mildly annoyed audiences paying to sit through the self-congratulatory drivel.
Director/co-writer/star Tom Hanks has clearly lost touch with what made him the most appealing actor in American cinema during the ’90s. He hasn’t had a truly great star vehicle since 2000’s “Cast Away,” and his once effortless charisma feels more mannered and forced than it did a decade ago. Yet that’s not the real problem here. The patronizing depiction of middle class downsizing scripted by Hanks and “Big Fat Greek Wedding” one-hit wonder Nia Vardalos is what sinks the whole show.

My eyes popped several times last night while watching the final part of the excellent ITV drama about the serial murderers Fred and Rose West, Appropriate Adult.
And my surprise had nothing to do with the sickening content involving the couple's dreadful activities.
First off, I spotted a former Daily Mirror colleague, Syd Young, acting as a courtroom extra while sitting next to the actor who was portraying him.
That was bizarre enough. Then, in the most crucial scene of all, came the realisation that Young's reporting work had made life more than a little uncomfortable for the barrister prosecuting the Wests, namely Brian Leveson, now Lord Justice Leveson and the man heading the public inquiry into media regulation.
Let me disentangle this strange set of coincidences.
The drama concerned the relationship that developed between Fred West and the woman appointed to act as an "appropriate adult" after his arrest in 1994, Janet Leach.

Some of the analysis of Larry Crowne’s disappointing opening-weekend box-office performance reads like obituaries. “Are America and Tom Hanks Out of Step?” asked the Los Angeles Times. “Why Won’t Tom Hanks Just Stop Already?” whined Toronto’s Globe and Mail. Crowne grossed only $13.1 million over the three-day weekend, an unimpressive but hardly a surprising result. (His last film with Julia Roberts, 2007′s Charlie Wilson’s War, grossed only $9.7 million in its opening frame.)

HollywoodNews.com: “Larry Crowne” is not a great film and it’s not exactly creating a stampede to the box office. On Friday night, Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts only mustered $4 mil at the box office. They’ll be lucky to have $16 mil in the till by Monday night. But it’s not all that bad. For one thing, “Larry Crowne” did better last night than the last Hanks-Roberts combo. “Charlie Wilson’s War” opened to less than $3 million in 2007 on its opening night. It went on to earn $66 million–which I am sure everyone at Universal, and Tom and Gary Goetzman at PlayTone would be thrilled with if it happened.
“Larry Crowne” cost $30 million to make (it looks it) plus probably $10 million for prints, ads, and promotion. It’s not like they took over Times Square or Red Square for opening nights. In the end it will break even.

We still don't have our first $100 million opening weekend earner, something I am sure Warner Bros. is happy about as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is virtually assured to become the first once it hits theaters in a couple weeks. But let's not look too far forward. Let's break this weekend down so we can get on with our extended July 4th weekend. Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 9 Weeks In A Row Transformers: Dark of the Moon Well, Transformers: Dark of the Moon fell short of that $100 million mark in three days, a number it would have obviously hit had it not started screening Tuesday night, but that's the route Paramount chose. One thing they have going for them, though, is Dark of the Moon set the record for the largest three-day opening on July 4th weekend, besting Spider-Man 2's $88.1 million by a large margin.
