Horror fans have had a whole lot of zombie entertainment sent our way in the last couple decades, much of it broadcast on television by AMC. There have been so many flesh-eaters and brain-munchers on our screens, some of us are feeling zombie overload. But if you’re still looking for zombie stories that do things a little differently from the others, we have a recommendation for you: a Japanese film that mixes the walking dead with shootouts, swordfights, and lengthy martial arts fights. It’s called Versus – and if you haven’t seen this one yet, it’s the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
Versus (watch it Here) was an independent production made by a bunch of unknowns, and many of the people involved with the movie remain unknowns to this day. It marked the feature directorial debut of Ryuhei Kitamura, who has gone on to have a solid career,...

As we have mentioned many times before, the most successful product of Asian cinema towards the US market (apart from anime) are the action/martial arts movies, and as such, it is by no surprise that the biggest industries of the continent and particularly S.Korea have invested heavily towards the particular category, with China following close by, in a genre that, most of the time, budget is the most crucial element. In that fashion, ultra violent and stylistic is the path S. Korea productions follow (this year), while China seems to be going more towards the sci-fi now that the Ip Man franchise has become somewhat preterit. Japan choose live-action adaptation or its rather famous franchises, while the duo of Tak Sakaguchi and Yudai Yamaguchi continue their effort to produce as realistic martial arts scenes as possible. China follows the stylistic martial arts approach, while India has come up...

The 85-minute One-Percenter, the new film from Meatball Machine writer/director Yudai Yamaguchi, opens with an extended series of intercut interviews and behind-the-scenes segments that feel like a DVD extra, centering on the intensity and combat abilities of action star Takuma Toshiro (Tak Sakaguchi). Members of the Japanese Self Defense Force and professional Mma fighters say that Toshiro is an incredible fighter who is entirely capable of killing with his bare hands. Toshiro, knowing his abilities, complains that what passes for action cinema is closer to dancing than fighting; he bemoans the lack of “realism” in action, saying that anyone can say a believable “good morning” on film, but no one ever attacks each other with “real” intent to harm. He seeks to change that and...

Bifan has established itself as one of the most significant festivals in Asia regarding the genre cinema of the region, with their program always being quite interesting through its focus on Korean cinema firstly and then of Japan and the rest of the region, along with a number of international titles. As such, the fact that the local industry is in trouble was more than evident this year, when genre movies in particular suffered, mostly due to issues with writing and also due to financial ones. It is true that Korea's top filmmakers are at the top of the world, but it has become obvious that below that level, the quality drops significantly.
Nevertheless, the aforementioned does not mean that the programs was without a number of gems. “Iron Mask” about a kendo athlete carrying a trauma, “Her Hobby” with its transition from a family drama to a horror and...

Yudai Yamaguchi and Tak Sakaguchi have repeatedly collaborated through the years in various capacities, with their common efforts resulting in a number of cult movies, including “Versus”, “Battle Baseball”, “Yakuza Weapon” etc. Now they are once more coming together in a different action film that boasts a meta approach, while including “Hydra”'s Kensuke Sonomura in the role of the action director.
“One Percenter” is screening at Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival
Action film actor Toshiro Takuma has only one goal on his mind, the perfection of action film acting, essentially to achieve utter realism and not have screen battles that are essentially dancing. However, in an industry addicted to wires, CGI and quick editing to simulate speed, he expectedly finds himself ostracized. Eventually, with the help of his dedicated apprentice Akira, he decides to make a movie as he dreamt and for that purpose, they move into an uninhabited island to shoot unbothered.

One of Japan’s most significant cultural phenomenon, the eccentricities of everyday life is explained by the presence of spirits in objects which have become known as Yokai. This concept has been a major figure in numerous stories and plays throughout the years, to novels, TV shows and feature films which is the subject of gonzo-exploitation director Yudai Yamaguchi and Keita Amemiya’s joint anthology-styled love letter to the creatures.

Yudai Yamaguchi (Deadball, Yakuza Weapon) is always worth keeping an eye on, and the same can be said for his latest thriller, Abductee. The set up is straightforward enough, in fact, it's very reminiscent of Buried in many ways, but time will tell just how gripping it proves. Abductee is released in Japan today, and you can check out the trailer at the link below. Synopsis: Atsushi Chiba, aged 50, wakes up one day half-dead. He's tied up in a container, being shifted somewhere. Inside the container lies a mysterious stone which doesn't give him the slightest clue as to who the perpetrator might be, nor any idea of the fate that awaits him. As the container makes its way from truck to ship, he discovers he is one of 200 abductees. The container continues to make its way from ship to train, and his explanations of the situation go from "human...

Chicago – “The ABCs of Death” may easily rank as the most repugnant two hours I’ve ever had the displeasure of being condemned to review. But don’t let that entice you, gorehounds. It’s also uninspired and thoroughly monotonous. The only thing that scared me was my realization after the first short film had ended that I still had 25 films left to go. This isn’t entertainment. It’s an endurance test.
Consider the vignette about an obese woman who decides, in a fit of depression, to slice off her fat. Her self-mutilation is juxtaposed with footage of a skinny model striking poses in a commercial. The director, Xavier Gens, cuts back and forth between the imagery with such mechanical repetition that the viewer develops a mixture of nauseation and whiplash but not, alas, fear. What a sad encapsulation of modern horror’s exceedingly sorry state. Horror used to be about atmosphere,...

Director: Various. Review: Adam Wing. Stephen R. Covey once said, “Strength lies in differences, not in similarities.” That’s certainly the case with The ABCs of Death, a 2012 American anthology horror film produced by Ant Timpson and Tim League. Their plan was simple, one movie consisting of 26 short films, shot by up and coming directors from 15 countries. Each director was assigned a letter of the alphabet and given free rein in choosing a word to create a story involving death. While the individual chapters were always going to be a little hit and miss, depending on your taste in horror, the quality of filmmakers is undeniable. Marcel Sarmiento (Deadgirl), Noboru Iguchi (The Machine Girl), Yudai Yamaguchi (Tamami), Ti West (The Innkeepers), Banjong Pisanthanakun (Shutter), Adam Wingard (A Horrible Way to Die) and our very own Ben Wheatley (Kill List) lend their skills to a disjointed, occasionally offensive, often engaging and highly recommended movie going experience.

The ABCs of death is a somewhat difficult film to critically analyse, as it’s made up of 26 different films by separate directors, linked only by the theme of death. The most straight-forward and legitimate way to therefore examine this picture, is to go on the ratio of good movies compared to the rather forgettable ones, and sadly, there are only five to be had. Which, out of 26, isn’t quite enough.
Directors such as Jason Eisener, Ti West, Ben Wheatley and Adam Wingard have all got involved in the project, as each filmmaker was seemingly given a letter at random, outlining the task of creating a short movie based on the subject of death using their selected letter as a key theme and title. With much creative scope and the chance for this eclectic range of directors to do something artistically original and innovative, and given the dark and disturbing nature to this picture,...

Director Yudai Yamaguchi's hilariously offensive, politically incorrect sports splatter comedy Deadball debuts on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital April 9th from Well Go USA Entertainment. A follow-up to Yamaguchi's earlier zombie baseball classic Battlefield Baseball, Deadball stars Tak Sakaguchi (Versus, Yakuza Weapon, Tokyo Gore Police) as Jubeh Yakyu, a seventeen-year-old juvenile delinquent sent to reform school after killing over 50 people within a week. It’s also a wildly uneven anthology collection from some of the most well-known horror directors working today. The film was announced a few years ago and rolled out at the Tiff and Fantastic Fest film festivals in 2012. The premise is intriguing. A letter of the alphabet was assigned to 26 different directors with one stipulation: they must create a short starting with that letter and pertaining to death. Then let them have it, no holds barred.

The premise of the project is simple, as you may recall – twenty six directors with minimal financial resources but full creative freedom were given a letter and the request to construct an on screen death in a manner connected to that letter.

Directors involved in the project are:

In yesterday’s news, we told you to expect something from The ABCs of Death this evening and we now have the first trailer for you to watch. The ABCs of Death is an anthology horror film with 26 short chapters. Each chapter is directed by a different filmmaker, including Ti West, Xavier Gens, Adam Wingard, and many more:
“Twenty-six directors. Twenty-six ways to die. The ABC’s Of Death is perhaps the most ambitious anthology film ever conceived with productions spanning fifteen countries and featuring segments directed by over two dozen of the world’s leading talents in contemporary genre film. Inspired by children’s educational books, the motion picture is comprised of twenty-six individual chapters, each helmed by a different director assigned a letter of the alphabet. The directors were then given free reign in choosing a word to create a story involving death.”

Today, AFI 2012 announced its complete lineup, after previously debuting its New Auteurs, Young Americans, Galas and Special Screenings we finally get a look at the Midnight, Breakthrough, Shorts, and deliriously good World Cinema Selections.
The Shorts section, with almost too many to count, features new work from Nacho Vigalando, Nicolas Provost, and even Shia Labeouf (Cannes selected), among many others. The four Midnight titles all played in Tiff 2012’s Midnight Madness selection, and here we see John Dies at the End making a stop here after originally premiering at Sundance. They’ve nabbed three North American premieres in their Breakthrough section, including Kid from Fien Troch, Nairobi Half Life from David Tosh Gitonga, and Oh Boy from Jan Ole Gerster. A mailman delivers a letter to an old woman. However she is not the intended recipient. It’s actually for Tebana Sankichi (Tak Sakaguchi). When the carrier realizes his mistake he sets to deliver it personally to the man himself. The man himself looks like ‘Smooth Criminal’ era Michael Jackson, wearing a shirt that says “Kiss Me”. In a park he solves a murder. If this sounds a bit quick and scattershot that’s because it is. This is the world of Tebana Sankichi: Snot Rockets. Sankichi is society’s obtuse moral compass with a finger on the pulse of a city living and breathing his very existance. He fights crime, solves mysteries, whethers visits from occult hags, wakes in cold sweats, gets committed to an insane asylum and pals around town preventing women from commiting suicide. His life is a full plate, so full that all this happens within the first seven minutes of the film...

7:40 pm – Started today off with the film that took home the Golden Lion last week in Venice, Ki-duk Kim’s Pieta. Splitting opinions with it’s series of shocking reveals, the film is a poetic revenge drama. Regardless of my reservations of watching a 4.5 hour film at a festival, I saw Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s slow, melodramatic onion, Penance. The Asian triple bill of today was rounded out by When Night Falls by director Liang Ying. Finishing my last full day here with Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers, which I’ve heard many good words about throughout the last week. One more day. [Jordan M. Smith]

To celebrate their 5th anniversary, the Arizona Underground Film Festival has expanded to a whopping nine nights on Sept. 21-29 for a cinematic event the likes of Tucson has never seen before!
The shenanigans kick off with the opening night film The Legend of Kaspar Hauser, an experimental Italian feature directed by Davide Manuli and starring Vincent Gallo as the hero and the villain to a strange young boy, then end with the closing night film Jason M. Solomon’s nostalgic documentary 7 Years Underground: A 60′s Tale, which profiles the legendary Cafe Au Go Go in NYC that hosted such up-and-coming acts such as Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, George Carlin, Lily Tomlin and more.
In between those two films lies a twisted carnage of movie mayhem, including Spencer Parsons’ demented homage to ’70s mystery cartoons Saturday Morning Massacre; Michael Melamedoff exploitative semi-doc The Exhibitionists; Stephen Amis’ Australian WWII sci-fi...

About to have its world premiere at Fantastic Fest, Yudai Yamaguchi's Tebana Sankichi (Snot Rockets) is a true labor of love. A very, very strange labor of love. Yamaguchi and his frequent collaborator and star Tak Sakaguchi set off down this very odd road in 1995 when their Sankichi character first appeared in a short film. That short film has been growing ever since, the duo adding gag upon gag and layer upon layer to an ultra low budget production that has now spanned continents.Tak Sakaguchi stars as Tebana Sankichi--lover of women, rescuer of the fallen, sometime private detective, wayward son, homeless bum, celebrity, bullied child, spoiled rich kid, and fighting master. The episodic comedy follows Sankichi's adventures across space and time, as well as...

Wow! I literally just jumped up for joy hearing this final wave. I think that this might be my favorite selection of films since I have been attending. Films like American Mary, Antiviral, Berberian Sound Studio, the remake of Who Can Kill A Child? – Come Out and Play and the World Premiere of the sequel to The Collector! These films plus a few others just caps off what I’m sure will be my favorite Fantastic Fest yet!
Also, for those keeping score, Michael picked 7 movies that are definitely showing while I picked 6. However, this could change once the secret screenings show. Again, Fantastic Fest starts next Thursday and we plan to have reviews, interviews and possibly video & audio blogs. Anyway, here’s the announcement:
