Oscilloscope Laboratories, the distribution company set up by late Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch, has acquired U.S. rights to The Universal Theory, which recently premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival (as the title The Theory of Everything). A theatrical release is planned for 2024.
From director Timm Kröger, the German drama is set in 1962 at a quantum mechanics conference in an isolated lodge nestled amid the towering landscapes of the Swiss Alps, and is the story of a gifted young physicist, his curmudgeonly mentor and an enigmatic jazz pianist who knows things about our wunderkind scientist that he’s never told another living soul. As the description goes, the film is “driven by astonishing twists, improbable coincidences and Hitchcockian suspense,” and “considers the metaverse theory from a refreshingly intelligent point of view.”
The main cast includes Jan Bülow, Olivia Ross, Hanns Zischler, Gottfried Breitfuss, David Bennent, Philippe Graber and Imogen Kogge.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Beau Is Afraid (Joaquin Phoenix)
Ari Aster’s brazenly original three-hour odyssey Beau Is Afraid is, refreshingly, the kind of film where it seems no notes were given––or at least the director had the creative control to reject them. Jumping from some of the most brilliant dark comedy in cinema as of late to a boldly conceived existential journey to an emotionally rife reckoning with mother issues, this Charlie Kaufman-esque journey of the mind packs in quite a lot. Even at its most unwieldy, Aster’s film is continued proof that Joaquin Phoenix––brilliant here, at the center of every scene––is the rare breed of actor seeking new challenges with each performance. – Jordan R.

Exclusive: Sirens, a rock doc about Beirut all-female thrash metal band Slave to Sirens, will get a theatrical run after Oscilloscope Laboratories bought the North American rights.
The company, which was founded by Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch, will give the film that premiered at Sundance in January an exclusive theatrical run before launching it on digital platforms.
Directed by Rita Baghdadi, who shot and produced the film along with producing partner Camila Hall, the film explores the lives and music of Slave to Sirens, a band made up of five young metalheads whose burgeoning fame is set against the backdrop of the Lebanese revolution.
Its members wrestle with friendship, sexuality, and destruction as their music serves as a refuge to Beirut’s youth culture. At the band’s core are its two founding members, Lilas Mayassi and Shery Bechara, whose complicated relationship and subsequent tense fallout threatens the very fabric of the band.

Oscilloscope Laboratories has snagged North American rights to Helmut Dosantos’ documentary “Gods of Mexico,” an exploration of the rich diversity of indigenous and Afro-descendant communities across Mexico.
The film had its world premiere at this year’s True/False Film Festival.
Hailed as “a tribute to those who fight to preserve their cultural identity amidst the shadows of modernization,” Dosantos transports audiences “through salt pans, deserts, highlands, jungle, and underground mines, in both richly saturated color and black-and-white melodic interludes.”
The “ethnographic portrait offers a critical consideration of values and challenges structures that breed displacement,” the synopsis reads.
Commented O-Scope’s Dan Berger: “’Gods of Mexico’ is inarguably one of the most astonishing filmic experiences I’ve had.” “The imagery is beyond stunning and the dialogue-free (but far from silent) soundtrack is utterly immersive,” he said, adding: “And this says nothing about the access that Helmut was able to...

Back together in person after two years of going virtual during the pandemic, the Austin-based SXSW Film Festival has announced its juried prizes. As in previous editions, the awards show happened at the midpoint of the nine-day event, before SXSW’s music events suck much of the attention away from film screenings.
The top prize in narrative feature competition went to “I Love My Dad,” written and directed by James Morosini, who also stars as a younger version of himself in this uncomfortable retelling of how he was catfished by his father (played by Patton Oswalt).
“Morosini displays massive empathy as a filmmaker to get into the mind of the father he feels betrayed by, and also as an actor portraying the impact of that betrayal,” said the jury, who also gave special jury prizes to the cast and crew of “It Is in Us All” and Elizaveta Yankovskaya, star of the Russian film “Nika.

Filmed over three years, 16mm documentary Anonymous Club gives unprecedented, intimate access to the private life of Courtney Barnett. A paradoxically introverted performer, she is – at the height of her success – ready to walk away. Directed by long-time collaborator Danny Cohen, the film sees Courtney record her innermost thoughts on a dictaphone, and begin her slow acceptance of the camera.
Following screenings at Melbourne International Film Festival, Brisbane International Film Festival and Sydney Film Festival, Anonymous Club will launch in cinemas in March 2022 via Film Art Media.
Anonymous Club is a Film Camp production, produced by Philippa Campey and Samantha Dinning, and edited by Ben Hall.

Beastie Boys Story, released by AppleTV+ in April and nominated for five Emmys, tells the story of the band that was formed in 1978 by Adam Yauch, Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz.
The film, directed by long-time collaborator Spike Jonze, was not your usual rock doc. It was told via a live show put on by Diamond and Horovitz (Yauch passed away in 2012) following the release of their memoir Beastie Boys Book.
Back in April, the film’s press tour was dominated by Diamond and Horovitz joking through interviews with a bit of context from Jonze, who first worked with the band in 1993 on their Time For Livin’ video.

“The Beastie Boys Story,” the rock ‘n’ roll documentary that was to have premiered in March at the South by Southwest Film Festival and is now premiering April 24 on Apple TV+, is in many ways the most conventional movie that director Spike Jonze has ever made. In a career marked by bold works like “Being John Malkovich,” “Adaptation” and “Her,” along with numerous groundbreaking videos, it’s a music doc that is, in effect, a straightforward chronicle of a live performance — a concert movie of sorts, except that the band is talking, not playing.
But maybe that very concept is what’s bold about “The Beastie Boys Story.” Music docs are usually built around revelations and unguarded moments where the subjects reveal more than they intended (or at least more than they want us to think they intended). In this case, though, everything that surviving Beastie Boys members Michael Diamond...

Even with its two-hour running time, the experience of watching Spike Jonze’s “live documentary” Beastie Boys Story has the feeling of a breezy, intimate, and perhaps too-short trip through the band’s history. Documenting a live event hosted in Brooklyn by surviving members Mike “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz, the collaboration is a performed extension of their memoir, Beastie Boys Book. Reteaming with the group, Jonze directs this minimal two-man stage show about three guys who were lucky enough to cultivate and sustain a relationship as best friends for years.

The Beastie Boys, a trio of nerdy Jewish kids from inner New York City, brought anti-establishment punk attitudes to a new generation and changed the shape of hip-hop forever.
Spike Jonze, who directed some of the band’s most iconic music videos including “Sabotage” and “Sure Shot”, helped define their flippant, juvenile brand that, more than three decades after their rapid rise to stardom, is still inseparable from everything Beastie Boys.
But no major pop artist can get ahead without a big dose of luck, and Michael Diamond (“Mike D”), Adam Horovitz (“Ad-Rock”) and Adam Yauch (“McA”) were no different. Befriending an adolescent Rick Rubin just as his favours to the likes of Run Dmc were beginning to pay off, The Beastie Boys gained the producer of a generation and an ally with the sort of connections they didn’t know they needed. A year ago, Adam Horovitz and Mike Diamond, of the Beastie Boys, premiered an extended theatrical evening in which the two got up onstage and chronicled the band’s 30-year history, from soup to nuts (pun intended), with photographs, TV and film clips, home videos, animated doodads, and other archival tidbits flashing on a screen behind them. The event, which premiered in Philadelphia, was staged by Spike Jonze, who had directed several Beastie Boys videos, notably the epochal ’70s-cop-show prankfest he laid over the big beat of “Sabotage.” Jonze approached the show as if it were the live-theater version of a documentary — the key difference being that Horovitz and Diamond wrote out what they were going to say beforehand, reading their recollections off a teleprompter (with a good deal of joshing spontaneity) and shaping it all, with the assistance of Jonze, so that the evening had the personalized flow and detail of a memoir.

Ad-Rock and Mike D host a convivial trip down memory lane in this filmed record of a live show staged in tribute to third member Adam Yauch
The release of this documentary coincides with #MeAt20, a heart-twisting craze on social media for posting pictures of yourself at 20 years old. Middle-aged people’s timelines are speckled with funny, sweet and sometimes unbearably sad images of themselves in unlined, unformed youth, doing goofy things in milky analogue pictures from back when you had 12 or 24 exposures on your roll-film camera and getting them developed at Boots was a pricey business. That’s what I thought of while watching this engaging, oddly moving film from Spike Jonze: a record of the live stage show he devised at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, New York, in tribute to white hip-hop stars and tongue-in-cheek party-libertarian activists the Beastie Boys. It is presented by the two surviving members,...

Chances are, no matter how much television you normally watch, you’ve been watching more than usual lately. A lot more. We’re all stuck inside, bored to tears, and there’s only so many times you can watch the same Parks and Recreation reruns. (Except for the Snake Juice episode. That one has infinite replay value.) In the midst of all this bad news, the good news is that new TV shows and highly anticipated premieres continue to arrive with regularity. (At least for now: the Covid-19 pandemic has...

The new Spike Jonze documentary chronicles how three friends went from being kings of their local scene to ascending worldwide fame. Not only does the clip tease archival, behind the scenes footage of the group in its formative years, but it highlights present-day reflections from Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz on their late bandmate and friend, Adam Yauch, in a live-show setting. Go back in time with the Ad-Rock, Mike D and McA in the trailer for their new documentary film “Beastie Boys Story,” which is coming to Apple TV+ next month.
Spike Jonze directed the film, described as a live documentary experience, which mixes a stage show presentation from Beastie Boys members Mike Diamond (Mike D) and Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock) talking about their personal journey forming the band with the late Adam Yauch (McA) and their 40 years of friendship.
“Now here’s a little story that I got to tell about three bad brothers that you know so well,” a young Mike D crudely raps in old home movie footage shown in the trailer. “It started way back in history with Ad-Rock, McA, and me, Mike D.”

In the world of hip-hop, the Beastie Boys are nothing short of legendary. The boys became famous goofball white rappers in the 1980s and ended up becoming the very thing they set out to satirize. After a long break, and a reset, they came back six years later and made Paul’s Boutique, one of the most innovative and cutting-edge hip-hop albums ever made, even to this day. This new musical trajectory, playing their own instruments, making their own samples, working with great artistic collaborators would mark their career to the very end in 2012 when founding member Adam Yauch passed away from cancer.

"What we're going to do right here is go back. Way back – back into time." Apple TV+ has debuted the first full-length trailer for Beastie Boys Story, described as a "live documentary" feature film about the classic rock / rap / punk band. Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz share the story of their band and 40 years of friendship in a live documentary directed by friend, collaborator, and their former grandfather, the one-and-only Spike Jonze. This is an extension of the Beastie Boys Book from 2018, a memoir that paid tribute to Adam Yauch, who died of cancer in 2012. "Live portions of the documentary were taken from Horovitz and Diamond's recent show at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn; it was all part of a live tour directed by [Spike] Jonze that consisted of Q&a segments, readings, and guest moderators." This looks incredible! I love that it's a mix of doc and live discussion and nostalgia and everything else.

As seen in the clip, the movie was inspired by Diamond and Horovitz’s collaboration on 2018 memoir Beastie Boys Book and the live show that followed it. The 571-page tome, written over the course of four years,...

The indie film company co-founded by the Beastie Boys’ late, great Adam Yauch has acquired the North American rights to Horace B.
