[The following story contains spoilers from the first four episodes of Apple TV+’s The New Look.]
The New Look not only marks creator Todd A. Kessler’s first series for Apple TV+, but it’s also his first project in years without his previous writing partners, his brother Glenn and collaborator Daniel Zelman, with whom Kessler co-created Damages and Bloodline.
Instead, Kessler has partnered with veteran film producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, through their dB-ak production company, on the series about how Christian Dior, Coco Chanel and other French fashion designers of the time dealt with the struggles of World War II and launched modern fashion. The name refers to how Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Carmel Snow described Dior’s 1947 collection.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter recently, both Kessler and Di Bonaventura were enthusiastic about their new professional pairing. When asked how working on this series was different than his previous endeavors, Kessler was quick to offer praise.

‘The New Look’ Trailer: Ben Mendelsohn’s Christian Dior Seeks to “Create a New World” in 1940s Paris
Against the backdrop of the World War II Nazi occupation of Paris, Ben Mendelsohn’s Christian Dior is seeking to create a new way forward in the trailer for the upcoming Apple TV+ historical drama, The New Look.
The 10-episode series, which reunites Mendelsohn with his Bloodline showrunner Todd A. Kessler, explores the interwoven saga of how Christian Dior, Coco Chanel (Juliette Binoche) and their contemporaries dealt with the horrors of World War II and launched modern fashion. Kessler created, wrote, directed and executive produced The New Look.
The trailer for the show teases tension between Dior and Chanel as the former ascends to prominence while Chanel’s status as the world’s most famous fashion designer is threatened.
“Christian Dior ruined French couture, and I’m coming back to save it,” Chanel proclaims at one point before later dismissively asking, “You think Dior is fashion?”

As massive as the entertainment industry is, there’s a small-world aspect to it that You Hurt My Feelings star Owen Teague can attest to as much as anyone. The Florida native’s career really took off when he was cast to play a young version of Ben Mendelsohn’s Bloodline character, Danny Rayburn, in mere photographs and old home videos, as that led to proper flashbacks and the critical role of Danny’s troubled son, Nolan. Andrea Riseborough also played his mother on the series, and two would later reunite as mother and son in Michael Morris’ To Leslie (2022), which garnered Riseborough one of the most improbable Oscar nominations of all time.
In the case of You Hurt My Feelings, writer-director Nicole Holofcener had previously cast Teague in the Kathryn Hahn-led series, Mrs. Fletcher, so the Oscar-nominated filmmaker went out to Teague for the role of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ son in the character-driven comedy-drama.

Exclusive: In his first star role set since his Oscar nominated turn as Elvis Presley, Austin Butler will star in City On Fire, the Sony 3000 Pictures adaptation of the Don Winslow novel. This will be Butler’s first film as producer, alongside David Heyman and Shane Salerno. Studio has made this a high priority, and will be meeting with writers and filmmakers immediately.
Deal brings Butler back with Sony Pictures, where he had his first breakout turn in the Quentin Tarantino-directed Once Upon A Time…In America. City on Fire is the first title in a novel trilogy, so the hope is for Butler to have his first turn on the ground floor of a film franchise, after starring in the Baz Luhrmann-directed Elvis.
The HarperCollins/Morrow novel takes elements of The Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid and Greek tragic dramas and places them in a world of contemporary crime.

A pilot has been ordered by FX for “The Border,” announced FX’s president of entertainment, Nick Grad, on Wednesday.
Based on Don Winslow’s award-winning, critically acclaimed Border trilogy, the story is said to “explore America’s failed 50-year war on drugs through the intertwining narratives of characters on both sides of the Mexican-American border: an obsessive Mexican-American DEA agent, a young boxing promoter who inherits a drug empire, a jaded teenager who rises to power in the world of high class escorts, and an Irish kid from the streets of Hell’s kitchen who becomes a ruthless, international hitman”, per the network. “
The New York Times called the Cartel Trilogy “a hybrid of The Godfather and War and Peace” and “this generation’s defining work of American mass-culture storytelling on the border.” FX nabbed the rights to the trilogy in 2019.

The “Game of Thrones” prequel pilot starring Naomi Watts is not going to series at HBO, Variety has confirmed with sources.
The cast and crew of the pilot were recently informed that HBO had passed on the project. The potential series was set to take place thousands of years prior to the events of the original series.
HBO declined to comment.
In addition to Watts, the pilot starred Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, Toby Regbo, Miranda Richardson, Marquis Rodriquez, John Simm, Richard McCabe, John Heffernan, and Dixie Egerickx.
Jane Goldman co-created the project with George R.R. Turns out George R.R. Martin may not have been getting your hopes up about additional “Game of Thrones” spinoffs after all.
Soon after HBO programming president Casey Bloys revealed during the Television Critics Association press tour Wednesday that production had wrapped on the untitled “GoT” prequel pilot starring Naomi Watts, he told TheWrap the pay-tv channel is still “possibly” considering ordering pilots for additional spinoff projects that are in development.
“I think we have one or two more scripts,” he told us. “But we’re gonna see what happens with this one.”
Bloys wouldn’t say if he meant the decision to order another pilot will be made after this one (which is now in editing) is or isn’t ordered to series, or after the potential show airs. Actually, he wouldn’t...

Production has wrapped on HBO’s Naomi Watts-led “Game of Thrones” prequel pilot, which began shooting in Belfast, Ireland this summer, Casey Bloys said during the Television Critics Association press tour on Wednesday.
The HBO programming boss also addressed the online petition that was started by fans asking the pay-tv channel to remake the final season of “GoT” with “competent writers” (a dig at showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss) which he says “shows a lot of enthusiasm.”
“Look, I take all of the activity around the finale as — there are very, very few downsides to having a hugely popular show, but one I can think of is when you try to end it, many people have big opinions on how it should end,” Bloys told reporters. “I think that just comes with the territory.”

Many awards pundits see the Writers Guild as a bellwether for the Oscars, though there’s a catch: oftentimes the Oscar nominees are not eligible at the guild because they aren’t written under its strict guidelines. Many awards pundits see the Writers Guild as a bellwether for the Oscars, though there’s a catch: oftentimes the Oscar nominees are not eligible at the guild because they aren’t written under its strict guidelines. Thus, Oscar nominee “The Favourite” was not eligible at WGA as this foreign production did not go through the lengthy process of proving its eligibility.

As the battle for the Iron Throne prepares to enter its final season, there’s already one Game of Thrones spinoff in the works, and HBO’s programming president says there could be more. Maybe.
“I don’t want to build a programming lineup that is dependent on the next Game of Thrones franchise coming,” Casey Bloys declared today as HBO held it multi-show TCA presentation. GoT‘s final season debuts April 14.

Naomi Watts got her first taste at “Game of Thrones” madness, laughing her way through an interview, trying to deflect questions about the upcoming HBO prequel.
Speaking at Variety’s Sundance Studio, presented by At&T — where Watts was on hand for her film “Luce,” which premieres Sunday night at festival — the actress insisted she had to stay mum on all things “Game of Thrones.”
“Do you really think I’m going to tell you that? Are you trying to catch me off guard?” Watts laughed, when asked about the plot of her prequel series.
While Watts wasn’t going to reveal anything about the plot or her character, she did express her excitement over the role.
“It’s a fantastic world, isn’t it? I think there’s so many brilliant elements to that series that make it very exciting, very appealing,” Watts said. “I don’t want to dig...

The HBO comedy “Barry” is having a great day. First it reaped three Golden Globe nominations and then it earned another three bids at the Writers Guild of America Awards. At the WGA, it competes for Best Comedy Series writing as well as for an individual episode and for the catch-all Best New Series award.
For the comedy series award, “Barry” faces off against reigning Emmy champ “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” as well as “Atlanta,” “Glow” and “The Good Place.” “Barry” is the only comedy up for the new series award alongside the dramas “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Homecoming,” “Pose” and “Succession.”
Of those four, only “Succession” made it into Best Drama Series where it competes against the final season of “The Americans,” season 4 of “Better Call Saul” and the sophomore editions of “The Crown” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
The WGA Awards winners will be revealed on Feb.

The “Game of Thrones” prequel pilot at HBO is starting to round out its cast.
Josh Whitehouse has joined the project, though the exact nature of his role is being kept under wraps. Whitehouse is now the second actor officially cast in the pilot, with Naomi Watts having been announced as one of the leads on Tuesday.
Taking place thousands of years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” the new show chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend–it’s not the story we think we know.
Jane Goldman co-created the project with George R.R. Martin, whose “A Song of Ice and Fire” novel series serves as the basis for “Game of Thrones.

George R.R. Martin was so excited to welcome Naomi Watts into the “Game of Thrones” family yesterday that he might have slipped up and revealed the name of the HBO fantasy series’ prequel pilot. Or, you know, decided to give it away for free.
“Casting is now underway for The Long Night, the first of the Game Of Thrones successor series to ordered to film,” Martin wrote on his Not a Blog blog Tuesday. “HBO has just announced the first cast member: Naomi Watts is coming on board as one of our stars. I could not be more excited. Welcome to Westeros, Naomi.”
Ok, so yes, HBO did announce Watts’ casting as a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret — but that was it. No further details were given about her character, the plot or the prequel pilot’s title.

HBO won’t be moving forward on any other of its “Game of Thrones” spinoff scripts in development, at least for now. Programming president Casey Bloys told reporters on Wednesday that a pilot for the “Thrones” prequel from Jane Goldman is expected to shoot at the start of the year, “but there are no plans to make any others at this point.”
Bloys and HBO had put five different “Thrones” spinoff scripts into development, but he stopped short of saying that the other four were completely dead. But for now at least, there is no movement on those projects. “The reason we did multiple scripts, in the development process, [we knew] out of five we’d be lucky to get one we’re excited about,” he said.

The final season of “Game of Thrones” will premiere in the first half of 2019, president of HBO programming Casey Bloys said Wednesday at the Television Critics Association summer 2018 press tour.
“Sometime in ’19,” Bloys said after being asked when we can expect the eighth and final season. When pressed, he said that it will air in the first half of next year. We knew it was airing in 2019, but now the window for an actual date is closing a little. As for what fans can expect from the final season? Bloys was tight-lipped, but said it’s “pretty great.”
Pivoting to the spinoff series in the works, Bloys said he hopes the pilot from Jane Goldman will go into production in 2019. “We have to find a director, we have to get it casted,” he said.
What we do know about the prequel is that it takes place thousands of years before “Game of Thrones,” and that the series will chronicle the world’s descent from the Age of Heroes. As the logline says, “Only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend … it’s not the story we think we know.”
Goldman serves as showrunner, and will executive produce with George R.R. Martin, Vince Gerardis, Daniel Zelman.
