Exclusive: Nadine Dorries was telling the truth when she accused BBC board member Robbie Gibb of meddling in a key appointment at the UK broadcaster’s regulator, Ofcom.
That’s the verdict of a source who worked closely with Dorries during her time as culture secretary in the year to September 2022. This person told Deadline that Gibb “campaigned” for his preferred candidate to become Ofcom chair.
It is the latest twist in a media row that has slowly gathered momentum in the UK after Dorries made allegations about Gibb’s interference in the Ofcom recruitment process in her book The Plot.
Dorries was responsible for hiring the next chair of Ofcom and narrowed the field to Lord Grade, a former BBC and ITV executive, and Lord Gilbert, a Conservative peer who served as an election strategist to former prime minister Theresa May.

There were no illicit drugs found on the premises, but police sources reported authorities discovered various prescription pills at his home.

The news of Friends star Matthew Perry’s death over the weekend left so many of us shocked and saddened. And then there were those that tried to capitalize on it, like former Saturday Night Live writer Kevin Brennan, who took to social media to mock the actor’s untimely death.
Kevin Brennan, who wrote for SNL during the 25th season (including an episode hosted by Friends star Jennifer Aniston), linked to TMZ’s article announcing Matthew Perry’s death with, “Drowned In A Hot Tub. Hahahaha”. He would go on to defend himself by writing, “I didn’t mock it. I just thought it was funny. But I do love it when junkies die”, next attacking The Hollywood Reporter with, “Looking forward to that special day you’re gone too.” Not that long after the initial tweet – that is, when stories began circulating about his disgusting comment – Brennan asked his followers,...

A former writer for Saturday Night Live has posted tweets mocking Matthew Perry’s death.
Podcaster Kevin Brennan tweeted a story covering the former Friends star’s passing and wrote, “Drowned In A Hot Tub. Hahahaha.”
The 63-year-old comedian — who wrote for just one season of SNL in 1999 — further said about the beloved actor who starred in 10 seasons of one of the most successful TV shows of all time: “I didn’t mock it. I just thought it was funny. But I do love it when junkies die.” He then explained drowning in a hot tub is funny “because it’s not very deep.” When roundly slammed for his comments, he asked, “Am I trending yet?”
Brennan is the brother of Chappelle’s Show co-creator Neal Brennan, whom he reportedly often trashes on his podcast while similarly putting down other successful comedians.

It seems that the UK government still hasn’t given up the effort to pressure Netflix into adding a disclaimer at the beginning of The Crown to let their viewers know that the events in regard to the Royal Family are more often than not fictitious, or in the words of Culture minister John Whittingdale, “speculation or imagination as to what might have happened.”
The latest season of Peter Morgan’s historical drama series, dealing with the dilemmas of the British monarchy, has been a subject of scrutiny ever since premiering last month on Netflix. Of course, there’s no denying that the show has been controversial since its conception, at least to some degree. But the arrival of Emma Corrin as Princess Diana, whose marriage and tragic death is still arguably the most sensitive topic to broach in the history of the Royal Family, has definitely put a strain...

The UK government has continued to apply pressure to Netflix to carry a disclaimer on The Crown making clear the series is dramatized — even though the U.S. streaming giant has already knocked back the request.
Culture minister John Whittingdale told a parliamentary committee on Tuesday that it “does no harm” for Netflix to make explicit to subscribers that The Crown, although pegged to real events, is Peter Morgan’s “speculation or imagination as to what might have happened.”
It follows culture secretary Oliver Dowden (Whittingdale’s boss) writing to Netflix last month requesting that it warn viewers that the lavish Left Bank Pictures drama is partly a work of fiction. Netflix declined the request, stating: “We have every confidence our members understand it’s a work of fiction that’s broadly based on historical events.”

Exclusive: The British Film Institute has responded to the stinging rebuke from the UK’s opposition party Labour that the film industry only “pays lip service to diversity” and that inclusion riders should be tied to the UK’s lucrative film and TV tax credit. Amanda Nevill, CEO of the UK’s leading organization for film told us, “Labour’s call for greater representation in the industry, echoes the BFI’s and the industry’s own concern to achieve this. Film and television are amongst the UK’s most successful and fastest growing industries – worth some £6 billion in Gva, with the tax incentives catalyzing our international competitiveness.

An Incredible Mess: Todd Berger’s Apocalypse a Hilarious Gas
The end of days have never looked like a better time to spend with friends than they do in director Todd Berger’s latest film, a gleeful exploration of morbidity, It’s a Disaster. Obviously made on a scanty budget, this one setting comedic extravaganza seems all the better for its tight containment, featuring an exciting concept, a hellaciously dynamite screenplay, and a group of talented actors all obviously having a good time—you’ll wish, as they do, that an end weren’t in sight.
Four couples are about to converge for a semi-regular couples brunch at the home of Pete and Emma (Blaise Miller and Erinn Hayes). While nearly all of them have been friends for years, the Debbie Downer of the bunch, Tracy (Julia Stiles) is bringing her recent boyfriend, Glenn (David Cross), to meet her friends for the first time.

Pretty much everyone who's ever been to high school has heard the claim that pineapple juices allegedly make a, uh, certain male quality taste better, but few have taken matters into their own hands as efficiently as Aubrey Plaza in her new movie "The To-Do List." In an exclusive MTV Sneak Peek Week clip, her character, Brandy Clark, reads in a magazine about the magic property of pineapple juice. That revelation leads the men she knows to guzzle the stuff to hilarious results.
It seems as though not every guy in the film understands why they're drinking pineapple juice, as Kevin Brennan's character tells Andy Samberg's that Brandy insisted on the drink because she is Mormon. We don't know if they'd be more or less intrigued if they knew the real reason.
In case you couldn't tell by the above clip, "The To-Do List" has an all-star cast.
