NCIS aficionados are facing some letdowns regarding the much-anticipated season 21. The beloved crime procedural is navigating through choppy waters, as external forces may significantly alter the upcoming season’s landscape.
The show’s devoted followers may have to adjust expectations, with the potential for the series to experience its briefest run yet due to industry-wide strikes.
Fans might get the shortest season yet of the hit crime procedural
The next NCIS season is poised to make history as its shortest, with an anticipated 10 to 13 episodes. This is starkly fewer than its 18th season’s 16 episodes.
This dip is notable, considering the series usually delivers over 20 episodes per season. The scale-back affects the entire NCIS lineup, including NCIS: Hawaii and NCIS: Sydney. The latter series was unaffected by the strike, but it will still not meet the standard episode count.

NCIS has said goodbye to many beloved characters over the years.
Sadly, the series will have to say goodbye to Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard following David McCallum's death in September.
CBS and those close to the show have yet to reveal whether a tribute episode is in the works, but there's no way the series will proceed without a fitting tribute to an actor who brought so much to the show.
For a series that's been on the air for 20 years, there has been a lot of cast turnover, meaning the show has an excellent opportunity to bring back some people who have been long gone to help say goodbye to Ducky.
But who should return for the big event?

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for NCIS Season 20 Episode 9, “Higher Education.”] Thom E. Gemcity, now there’s a name we haven’t heard in a while — and a name Jessica Knight (Katrina Law) never has — on NCIS. That changes with “Higher Education.” When Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) and Knight come into work, and Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) is seemingly distracted, he reveals that he’s busy with a “personal project”: Thom E. Gemcity is back! That’s how Knight finds out McGee’s a novelist, the “John Grisham of NCIS,” as she puts it (he’d say Tom Clancy), and just who exactly is in his books. “What mystery is Special Agent Tibbs embarking on next?” Torres asks. “Your lead character’s name is Special Agent Tibbs?” Knight asks in disbelief. “Because Gibbs couldn’t clear legal?” But “Gibbs and Tibbs are wildly different people,” McGee insists. As for the story, “since Gibbs is off doing his thing,...

"I mean, we're going to give people a lot to talk about. I'm not one to do the, 'You have to wait and see!' hype, but man, this episode is really unpredictable," he said in a recent interview with TV Line.
"I promise you that you're not going to see any of this coming," the actor added.
The conversation turned to Gibbs, with TV Line pondering what the season finale could mean for Mark Harmon's involvement in the show.
