Did Activision force the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 team to incorporate loot boxes and other microtransactions?
Developer Treyarch claims that it had no intentions of introducing the controversial loot boxes and premium characters that are now live on Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. A discussion on Reddit regarding how complicit Treyarch really was in this decision prompted Treyarch design chief David Vonderhaar to step in and set the record straight.
"Things change along the way... and not all of them are design decisions," Vonderhaar said on Reddit. "It's a chicken and egg problem. I can tell you what we have done and what we plan on doing, but things change that I can not predict or I didn't know about. Doubly true with the business side of things which have little insight into and even less control over."
The obvious takeaway from this statement is that...

The creator of Diablo has suggested that Blizzard's greed is slowly destroying the studio.
David Brevik, the creator of Diablo and the upcoming indie title It Lurks Below, recently went on a bit of a rant regarding the state of Blizzard in which he accused the company of prioritizing profits over its employees.
"The people above Blizzard, who are profit happy, [are saying] 'Oh my God, Fortnite is making a fucking shit ton,'" Brevik said on a stream that featured Twitch streamer thejunglequeen playing the Diablo-like Path of Exile. The classic science fiction Rts game is officially making a return with StarCraft: Remastered. This morning Blizzard made the announcement with a new trailer, and details on how the remaster will take advantage of modern technology. Come inside to check it all out!
Though it's far from the first in the Real-Time Strategy genre, StarCraft remains one of the genre's most influential game. On top of giving players a fun, futuristic story, StarCraft refined the gameplay formula to a sublme level, and helped lay the foundation for eSports as we know it now. It's long been one of my all time favorite games, and something I always tend to come back to.
Hell, I had it on the PC and even the N64 version and when I had to get off the computer in the house, I went to my room and fired up the Nintendo 64 version. I loved the StarCraft II games,...

The latest expansion for World of Warcraft is seeing a lot of players return to the game. Check out the details after the jump!
According to recent numbers, the latest World of Warcraft expansion Legion has sold over 3.3 million units in the first 24 hours.
This is the sixth expansion released for the long running Mmo title, releasing on August 30th. The last time an expansion was this hot was back when Cataclysm released in 2010. This includes the highest number of concurrent players, but Blizzard did not provide additional details.
"We worked hard to make this the best World of Warcraft expansion yet, and we look forward to providing players with even more content as Legion's epic story unfolds in the months ahead," Blizzard CEO and cofounder Mike Morhaime said.
An update for Legion is coming soon titled Return to Karazhan which will add an additional raid called Trial of Valor.

The makers of the Warcraft movie did everything right. They tapped a video game universe with an immense collection of lore and backstories as source material. Director Duncan Jones had indie cred, a commercial and critical hit in Source Code, and a verifiable history of love for the games he was drawing from. His actors were intriguing performers who had shown great potential in other roles. Dean Redman, who plays Varis, said Jones helped the actors see their characters' motivations and goals, and then gave them the freedom to express...

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past several months, chances are you’ve heard of a rather popular game called Overwatch. You can’t go anywhere on the internet without seeing an advert, video, poster – whatever – for Blizzard’s online arena shooter, and for good reason: pretty much everyone is in agreement that the game is brilliant.
Indeed, a rather large audience is already enjoying mowing-down enemies with Bastion and sniping stragglers with Widowmaker. A whole 7 million of you, in fact. As confirmed by Blizzard (via VideoGamer), a total of 119 million hours of game time have been logged since Overwatch launched last week on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with Blizzard co-founder and CEO Mike Morhaime calling it “one of the most successful global game launches of all time”.

Warcraft is going to easily be one of the most visually stunning films of the year. I also think it will end up being one of the best video game films made so far.
Today we have a new featurette called “The Beginning” with new footage from the film along with interviews with the cast and crew. This featurette is actually the best piece of marketing for the film I've seen so far. There's also a second featurette that focuses on Paula Patton's transformation into the character Garona.
I also included a series of portraits that focus on the CGI characters of the film and the actors who portray them. They highlight the transformation that took place to turn these humans into Orcs for this film.
The effects of the film were done by Ilm, and they did such an incredible job bringing these characters to life. The detail...

When the credits roll in the theater, a new adventure awaits at home—Blizzard Entertainment and Regal Entertainment Group today announced an epic promotion that gives moviegoers a chance to continue the journey they began in Legendary Pictures’ Warcraft movie. In celebration of the film’s June 10 U.S. theatrical release, anyone who buys a ticket to see Warcraft at participating Regal Cinemas locations in the United States will receive a free digital copy of World Of Warcraft—the acclaimed massively multiplayer online role-playing game played by millions of people worldwide.
Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment said:
“A whole new audience will experience the war between the Alliance and the Horde when the Warcraft movie hits theaters. We’re excited to give Regal moviegoers in the U.S. a chance to participate in that conflict firsthand and explore Azeroth for themselves after seeing it on the big screen.

Going live right around the time Gearbox’s fellow hero shooter Battleborn debuted, if Blizzard Entertainment’s beta for Overwatch opened against hefty competition it didn’t show, with the publisher confirming that the online testing session fast became the biggest in Blizzard’s decorated history.
Pulling in a total of 9.7 million players across PS4, Xbox One and PC, the fact that the beta test ran for almost a week no doubt helped push those numbers higher, but it’s a remarkable tally nonetheless.
For the sake of comparison, Overwatch‘s open beta broke past both Destiny and The Division‘s total, pre-release player count – 4.6 and 6.4 million, respectively – which were both record-setters for a brief period.
Here’s the official announcement via the game’s Twitter account.
The world needed heroes, and an incredible 9.7 Million of you answered the call. Here’s to our next adventure! pic.twitter.com/YIusT...

These last two Warcraft posters spotlight a couple of characters that have been largely absent from the movie's promotion thus far: Medivh and Khadgar. Both of these guys are Mages that begin fighting for the alliance, but one may have some hidden motives - if the movie follows the story laid out in the video games, that is. For the second consecutive year, director Duncan Jones brought a sizzle reel for his upcoming Warcraft to San Diego Comic-Con, and for the second consecutive year, said footage remained locked behind closed doors. However, in keeping with this year’s trend of leaked trailers, a bootleg version of the clip from this year’s show has appeared online, showcasing the director’s mystical, expansive take on Azeroth.

The release of World of Warcraft‘s fifth expansion, Warlords of Draenor, has had players return to Blizzard’s seminal Mmo in their droves, after the company revealed that the game’s subscriber count has eased past 10 million strong for the first time in three years.
As a matter of fact, the company sold through a staggering 3.3 million copies of Warlords of Draenor in just 24 hours — a statistic that hasn’t been met since the launch of Cataclysm back in 2010.
In response to these promising numbers, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard, Mike Morhaime, released the following message of thanks.
“We’re thrilled that so many players jumped in to play Warlords of Draenor on day one and are having a great time with the new content. We poured a lot of hard work and passion into this expansion, and we appreciate all the kind words from players and the overwhelming...

For Blizzard Entertainment, 2014 has proven to be a vital year. Up until now, World of Warcraft‘s subscriber numbers had been steadily waning, and with a lack of new IP, many mistakingly assumed that the best days for the esteemed developer were firmly behind us. But at this year’s annual BlizzCon event, the publisher effectively silenced the naysayers with a string of new content for StarCraft 2, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft and an all-new IP in team-based shooter, Overwatch.
It was undeniably a bold showcase from Blizzard as it looked to outline its vision for the future; one that won’t include the recently cancelled Mmo, Titan. But amidst all of that, the publisher also made some time for World of Warcraft ahead of its ten-year anniversary by releasing a documentary on the seminal multiplayer title. The extensive clip, which you can check out above, essentially outlines the rise of...

Director Duncan Jones had a Warcraft movie presentation at Blizzcon yesterday, and during the panel he revealed the characters that all of the lead actors are playing. We were also sent some details on each of those characters that will be introduced in the film.
Below you will find a list of characters that have been divided between ‘Alliance’ and ‘Horde,’ which are the two opposing armies in the franchise. I also included photos of the actors from the presentation, thanks to /Film.

"World of Warcraft" creators Blizzard Entertainment have announced "Overwatch," their first new franchise in almost two decades.
The project marks Blizzard's first shooting game and aims to do what "Destiny" has kind of already done - merge a first person shooter with a large online world where gamers can both play through a storyline along with interacting with one another. As Blizzard is famous for creating giant worlds though, theirs could well be much bigger.
Players will take on the role of one of a dozen central superheroes, charged with protecting Earth after they helped end a war in the distant future. All characters have unique stories and features. The game itself is also played in teams.
Blizzard President Mike Morhaime says: "With every new Blizzard game, we look at our favorite aspects of a genre and put our own spin on things. Our goal with Overwatch is to create...

Blizzard Entertainment, the company that brought us World of Warcraft, announced their all new PC franchise today titled Overwatch and provided a trailer for its introduction during BlizzCon today. Set in a futuristic world on Earth, the title is a team-based multiplayer shooter and focuses on international based characters with their own special abilities.
The official press release from Blizzard which describes the game in detail:
The action of Overwatch takes place in a technologically advanced, highly stylized future earth. In a time of global crisis, an international task force of soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities known as Overwatch had come together to restore peace to a war-torn world. After many years, the group’s influence waned, and it was eventually disbanded. Overwatch might be gone now . . . but the world still needs heroes.
With an emphasis on accessibility and pure fun, Overwatch brings Blizzard’s signature easy-to-learn, hard-to-master gameplay to the Fps genre.
