The Commissioned Films competition at the 2018 edition of the Annecy Film Festival and Mifa market will feature 31 commissioned animated short films, chosen from 417 submissions. Participating films are either music videos, commercial advertisements or educational videos, which will compete for two awards: The Annecy Cristal for a Commissioned Film and the Jury Award for a Commissioned Film.
The participating films were selected by Annecy artistic director Marcel Jean and film and programming team members: Laurent Million, Yves Nougarède, and Sébastien Sperer.
Sperer has worked for Citia, the organization which runs the festival, for two decades. He has been on the selection committee since 2013, and in a conversation with Variety explained how those years of experience have led to a simple and streamlined selection process.
“We really know the job now,” he said. “Most of the films are chosen because they are astonishing and really beautiful.”

Well, it’s convention season once again. This statement doesn’t mean as much as it used to, when there actually was a convention “season.” Now it pretty much runs from the beginning of spring (Glenn was at WonderCon and will be posting his pictures sometime before next year’s show) and ends the following March at San Francisco’s MegaCon… give or take.
My schedule includes Chicago’s C2E2 next week, maybe Heroes in Charlotte in June, San Diego in hell, Baltimore in August and New York in October, held each year at the only spot in all Manhattan that is inaccessible to humanity. For me, it started last week at one of my favorites, New York’s Museum of Comics and Cartoon Art, a.k.a. MoCCA Fest.
Being in our back yard, ComicMix was well represented: Vinnie Bartilucci, Glenn Hauman, Adriane Nash, and Mike and Kai Raub.

No one knows Dickens quite like Snoop Dogg… er… Lion.
In partnership with Adidas, the rapper-turned-Rastafarian has graced us with a stirring animated rendition of A Christmas Carol. The video, illustrated by Beavis and Butthead’s J.J. Sedelmaier, tells the story of Ebenezer Snoop, a former gadabout who’s lost his holiday mojo. Dickens’ notorious Christmas ghosts — portrayed here, somewhat inexplicably, by sports greats Stan Smith, David Beckham, and Derek Rose — take Snoop to parties throughout time and show him the error of his ways. Rap puns abound (“Bah! Humbizzle!”) and the malt liquor flows like eggnog – imagine the Christmas...

Takashi Miike. Few names spark the imagination and feed the fires of fandom more than his when it comes to genre fans. The man has built a following that spans the globe. At the New York Comic Con, fans will meet the man himself as he debuts his latest film, Yatterman.
The good folks behind the New York Comic Con revealed today that maverick Japanese director Takashi Miike will appear at its 2009 event as a Guest of Honor and superstar actor and pop star Sho Sakurai will attend as a Special Guest.
Miike and Sakurai will be at Nycc to speak about their upcoming feature film Yatterman — and then present the world premiere of the highly anticipated movie, produced by Nikkatsu Studios and scheduled for release in Japan in early March.

[Post freshly updated with the full press release with all of the current information. There will be two screenings of the film in New York, both of them for free!]
The title says it all really. If you’re going to be attending the New York Comic Con on February 6th the Japanese directors and his leading man Sho Sakurai will be in attendance for the world premiere of Yatterman. That’s one whole month before the film opens in Japan on March 7th. Wacky. They will participate in a panel discussion at 4pm on that day and follow the discussion with the film.
Sadly, the only reason I have to watch this film, Kyoko Fukada, [ahem] will not be in attendance so I will not be running any borders any time soon.
