I was a huge fan of 2014s Australian zombie gorefest Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead and so I have spent the intervening years awaiting the long-gestating sequel with bated breath… and now, finally, it’s here. Was it worth the wait?
Er… F*ck yes!
Picking up just after where the first film left off, Wyrmwood: Apocalypse shows us what happens to Brooke when she goes full-on zombie. At the same time starting a new story which follows Rhys ((Luke McKenzie), the twin of one the characters from the original film, whose running a weird zombie experiment “camp” where he captures and runs tests on the undead – using them to power his facility, to practice boxing with, you know, the usual; all the while looking for signs of a cure.

2014’s Wyrmwood: Road Of The Dead was one of those quirky little comedy horror movies which could easily have gone horribly wrong but which just happened to go horribly right thanks to the chemistry between its cast-members and its anarchic sense of fun. This long-awaited sequel does its best to use the same formula, but in its efforts to recapture past glory it loses the spontaneity which was vital to making that formula work.
Jay Gallagher is back as beleaguered hero Barry, who now lives alone in a nicely designed little compound whose electricity is supplied by zombie farts. The living dead cluster all around his wire fence, moaning and uselessly trying to get inside it, which provides him with a seemingly unlimited resource. Every now and then he captures one and trades it to his local mad scientist, who is supposedly working on a cure. He’s not exactly living the.

‘Nekrotronic.’
Kiah Roache-Turner’s Nekrotronic opened in the Us last weekend as a multi-platform release.
Momentum Pictures launched the sci-fi horror comedy starring Monica Bellucci, Ben O’Toole, David Wenham, Caroline Ford, Tess Haubrich and Bob Epine Savea in cinemas in 10 cities and on VOD and digital HD.
The eOne-owned distributor did not share box office figures, which are typically modest for day-and-date releases. The benefit of the theatrical exposure is that the reviews and publicity give the film a profile which pays off in ancillary revenues.
The director trimmed five minutes of exposition scenes after the world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, resulting in more favourable reviews, particularly from genre websites.
For example, We Are Movie Geek’s Marc Butterfield hailed the film as “hilarious, fun, action packed, and full of gross, splashy, gooey moments; in other words, fantastic.”
Butterfield observed: “The movie has a nice amalgamation of story elements from Ghostbusters,...

‘Nekrotronic.’
Kiah Roache-Turner’s sci-fi horror comedy Nekrotronic will be released in the Us in select cinemas and on VOD and digital HD on August 9 by Momentum Pictures.
“I’m really excited: I think day-and-date is the future for most independent films in the Us,” Kiah tells If. “Some say it is the end of cinema but it’s not: it’s a different way of delivering films to eyeballs.”
One advantage of the day-and-date strategy is limiting the potential for piracy. The Roache-Turner brothers’ Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead was available on iTunes in the Us before the Australian release. “Piracy killed us,” he says.
Produced by Andrew Mason and Troy Lum for Hopscotch Features and Tristan Roache-Turner for Guerrilla Films, Nekrotronic stars Monica Bellucci as Finnegan, CEO of the sinister Daemokon corporation, who is determined to feast on every human soul on the planet via a new smartphone app.

For his feature film debut, Australian filmmaker Kiah Roache-Turner delivers a raucously fun and badass zombie-infused road movie in Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead. Co-written by Kiah and his brother Tristan, the story follows an unlikely hero by the name of Barry (Jay Gallagher) who must fight his way through hordes of newly transformed zombies in order to save his sister Brooke (Bianca Bradey) who has been kidnapped by government officials under mysterious circumstances.
Daily Dead recently spoke to Roache-Turner about his experiences collaborating on the indie horror film alongside his brother, how the story of Wyrmwood evolved over time throughout production, the importance of making something more than ‘just another zombie movie’ and what they’ve got planned for the sequel in the future.
Thanks so much for chatting today, Kiah. The movie is just fantastic and it’s probably one of the best zombie films I’ve seen in a long time.

A still from Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead..
Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead was the most downloaded film globally last weekend, according to one torrent site, after being launched in the Us on iTunes on Friday.
The rampant piracy dismays Kiah Roache-Turner, who made his feature debut directing the Zombie horror/comedy, co-written and produced with his brother Tristan.
The saga of mechanic Barry (Jay Gallagher), who loses his family in an Apocalypse then sets out with best mate Benny (Leon Burchill) to find his missing sister (Bianca Bradey), it had one-off screenings at 76 cinemas nationally last Friday night.
Distributed by Studiocanal, the film grossed $85,000, which brings its total to $124,000 including the proceeds from five Moonlight Cinema screenings.
As an alternate content title, it will be released on DVD and on digital platforms on April 2. While that.s faster than the traditional 120- day holdback, it.s not fast enough for the brothers.

In general, I haven’t been a big fan of zombie movies over the last five years. It may be related to how zombie-crazy pop culture has gotten as of late, but I rarely get enthused these days over the prospect of watching the undead munch their way through yet another 90 minutes of my time. But then a movie like Wyrmwood comes along and completely proves me wrong. This Australian zombie romp is as gory as it is fiercely hilarious, managing to find some clever new twists to the ever-popular subgenre.
Wyrmwood was entitled after a passage in the Book of Revelations that prophesized the end of days after “ a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky and turned the water bitter.” It’s a biblical allegory that fits perfectly here as the outbreak of the zombie pandemic is caused by a passing comet one night; people...

Wyrmwood: Road Of The Dead is a confident debut from Aussie filmmaker Kiah Roache-Turner, a man who dares to create an apocalyptic landscape that re-imagines zombie lore in a ballsy new light. Gone are the teachings of George A. Romero, as Kiah and his brother Tristan instead turn to down-under legend George Miller for inspiration and a more action-heavy attitude over traditional zombie thinking. Kiah and Tristan set out to make a film that blends Mad Max and Night Of The Living Dead, and they certainly whip up a rip-roaring mechanized nightmare that screams “Mission Accomplished.” Wyrmwood: Road Of The Dead establishes a violent dystopia filled with armored vehicles, sick experiments and tons of bad blood, and while the story leaves unexplained holes, Wyrmwood is a lonely road I’d love to travel down many more times.

We’ve already covered it here at Fsr (see Chris Campbell’s spot-on review here) so I’m not including it below, but trust us — if it’s playing in your area you should gather up your friends and family and go see it. You will laugh. A lot. Instead, I’m looking at three smaller films opening on Friday. All of them are getting limited theatrical runs along with VOD releases, but that’s where their similarities end. One’s a Hugh Grant-led romantic comedy that somehow traveled through time from the ’90s, one’s a puritanical slasher set in a 24/7 subscription-based porn house and one’s a zombie flick from down under. —————————————————– Barry (Jay Gallagher) goes to bed a happily married man with a lovely wife and...

Wildly apocalyptic with dollops of silliness, Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead proves to be a splendidly gritty affair, a tale that feels like it's being told from the back of a jeep as it races away from doomsday on a very bumpy road in Australia. To start things off ... well, let's skip past that and get right into the two main story threads. The primary engine follows Barry (Jay Gallagher) and his family as a deadly outbreak comes home. He's awakened by a frantic phone call from his sister Brooke (Bianca Bradey), who was enjoying an informal photo session with two friends at home when one of them appears to get violently, mysteriously ill. Brooke wakes up Barry with a dire warning, and then...

We’ve been through many cycles of cinematic history now, reached many milestones and have given birth to many cliche’s as well, but as time draws forth, where does film take hold to ensure a continued future of innovation? Certainly, technology does, and will always have its part in the creative endeavor of filmmaking, but when it comes to story, are we beginning to see the long, slow death of originality? On some levels, I fear this may be a temporary reality, but much like life and energy itself, never truly dies and will always find a way.
It will come as no surprise that many a studio film is churned out in formulaic fear of stirring the pot, rousing the dormant interest of adventurous viewers, but we still have our independence. Indie filmmakers, the experimenters, the explorers, the balls-to-the-wall, no excuses, just make it happen and make it yours pioneers.

It's been a long apocalypse — who can blame you if you're zombied out? Yet Australian filmmakers Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner remind us why we love these bloody movies in the first place, evincing Raimi-esque glee at twisting the rules of zombiehood like so much taffy. Their debut feature, Wyrmwood, sheds the dour suspicion that suffuses The Walking Dead; instead of circling each other warily, characters of good heart recognize their kind and welcome them with a shrug and a beer. Freshly widowed Barry (Jay Gallagher) is trying to reunite with his sister, Brooke (Bianca Bradley). He and some new friends (Leon Burchill and Keith Agius) discover that gasoline no longer combusts; zombie breath, on the other hand, does, prompting the construct...

A new dawn of artificial intelligence, a truck that’s literally fueled by zombies, neck-chomping co-workers, and much more. We’re back with another trio of trailers, this time featuring Chappie, Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, and Bloodsucking Bastards.
“Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.”

For a first-up effort, the horror/comedy Wyrmwood looks like being a powerful catalyst for the careers of brothers Kiah Roache-Turner and Tristan Roache-Turner.
A Us distribution deal is in final negotiation after Studiocanal acquired the Australian and UK rights and last week the brothers signed with one of the top five Hollywood talent agencies.
Paradigm Agency, which handles horror maestro James Wan, courted the brothers after seeing a trailer of the film they co-wrote and produced, and Kiah directed.
Two Paradigm reps attended the world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin Texas, where the micro-budgeted film got rave reviews from critics.
.The Paradigm guys were completely passionate,. Kiah tells If. Before signing the brothers had arranged to meet with the Us studios, agents and producers in Hollywood, all on their own initiative.
Kiah was stoked to be discussing directing Us projects budgeted at between $40 million and $60 million. But he...

Let’s just agree right off the bat that we aren’t going to get into “the infected are vs. the infected aren’t” zombies argument, k? People are passionate about their beliefs on the subject. We get it. I’m not even going to say which side of the argument I fall on. That said, Wyrmwood is a new Aussie zombie flick, of the infected variety, from first time director Kiah Roache-Turner, who also co-wrote it with brother Tristan Roache-Turner . It promises to be “Mad Max meets Dawn of the Dead”, and if you ask me, that’s pretty much making the bold statement that this is probably the best thing ever. Can it even be expected to deliver entertainment on that level? The short answer is no, the longer answer is below.

In the last few years we’ve had zombies in Cuba and Africa, zombie found-footage pics, genuinely funny zombie comedies, hell, even “The Walking Dead”’s most recent season was its best so far. If you think about it, the zombie subgenre is the perfect platform for experimentation, and cheap or expensive, dead serious or super-cheesy, heady or just an excuse for excessive gore, there are still new stories to tell. Billed as “Dawn of the Dead” meets “Mad Max”, the new Australian film “Wyrmwood” earns its brain supper by simply being a ton of fun.
