WASHINGTON -- Federal regulators want News Corp. and DirecTV to answer a series of questions concerning the affiliation deals between the Fox network in 10 cities, promotional ties between Disney and the satellite TV service and the deal DirecTV is in to provide service with the National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative. While the questions, detailed in a letter to the companies mailed Thursday, had executives with the companies scratching their heads, they did not think it would hold up the merger. "We're optimistic that we can close by the end of the year," DirecTV spokesman Richard Dore said. News Corp. spokesman Andrew Butcher said the company could have the answers to the FCC's questions "very quickly." One opponent of the deal, Jeff Chester, executive director of the nonprofit Center for Digital Democracy, said the FCC's questions were woefully inadequate. "Grocery lists are more elaborate than this," he said.
