Hannah Marks started acting when she was 6 years old, after seeing her mother’s acting reel. And she’s pretty much worked nonstop, from roles in the films “Accepted” and “The Runaways” to the cast of “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.” In fact, just last year she took her first vacation — though she confesses to recording several self-tapes during it.
In recent years, she has also made a (forgive me) mark behind the camera as a filmmaker, beginning with writing and directing “After Everything,” The indie film starred Jeremy Allen White as a young man diagnosed with bone cancer who embarks on a new relationship, premiering at the SXSW Film Festival in 2018.

Disney+ has unveiled the official trailer ‘Black Cake,’ an adaptation of Charmaine Wilkerson’s best-selling novel of the same name.
In the late 1960s, a runaway bride named Covey disappears into the surf off the coast of Jamaica and is feared drowned or a fugitive on the run for her husband’s murder. In present-day California, a widow named Eleanor Bennett, loses her battle with cancer, leaving her two estranged children, Byron and Benny, a flash drive that holds previously untold stories of her journey from the Caribbean to America. These stories, narrated by Eleanor, shock her children and challenge everything they thought they knew about their family’s origin.
The series is a family drama wrapped in a murder mystery with a diverse cast of characters and a global setting, from Marissa Jo Cerar, Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Films, and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. The story takes place in Jamaica,...

Hulu’s adaptation of Charmaine Wilkerson’s debut, “Black Cake,” delves into the intricate roots of a mysterious family tree. It skillfully navigates the journey of a family unraveling the complex and often tragic past of their mother, Eleanor Bennett, following her demise.
Eleanor (portrayed by Chipo Chung) passes away in Southern California, leaving behind a history unknown to her family, including her estranged daughter Benny (played by Adrienne Warren from “The Woman King”) and ambitious son Byron (Bashy from “Top Boy”). Eleanor’s will discloses an audio recording filled with long-buried secrets. Benny and Byron, not on the best of terms, discover a note instructing them to share a small black cake in the freezer when the time is right.
The series draws its name from a Caribbean dessert, reflecting its own intricate history. Like the tale told in “Black Cake,” this dessert, soaked in rum and laden with fruits,...

Lest we ever forget it for a moment, Mia Isaac is a tour de force.
She has this innate ability to pull you in the second she appears on screen, and that's largely why following Covey's journey during the flashbacks is inarguably the series at its strongest and best.
As a result, Black Cake Season 1 Episode 7 was one of the series' best installments, as it mirrored the Black Cake series premiere in centering young Covey again and pushing the present-day characters to the fringes as needed.
It also marked closure regarding the audio tapes and Covey/Eleanor Bennett telling her children her story.
She's gotten her life story out. With all of its twists, turns, complications, and secrets of her choice, she places the ball in her children's court to do with that information what they desire.
What's promising about her final message to them is that it at least...

Mabel Mathilda makes everything better.
Listen, if we have to spend time in the present with the Bennett siblings, it works best when we get more exciting aspects, such as the two meeting their biological sister for the first time or Byron's relatable candor with a dash of Benny not being as annoying as usual.
And thankfully, Black Cake Season 1 Episode 6 delivered on that.
It doesn't hurt that we got a dash of Covey and saw how flawed and short-sighted she was as a best friend.
Covey's complexities make this story compelling, so any opportunity to revisit her is always welcomed. And did we mention that Mia Isaac is magic? Yeah, we did, but let's repeat it anyway.
On the flashback front, we glimpse some of the tension between Covey and Bunny as best friends because of Covey's attempt to "protect" Bunny from her homosexuality.
Times were different, and as Eleanor Bennett recounted these days,...

The Bennett siblings are doing incredibly well, given all the revelations they're bombarded with at once.
Eleanor Covey Bennett has Lived, and she died with more secrets than any government agency around the globe!
And yet the people she left behind were still unprepared for the whopper of a secret revealed during Black Cake Season 1 Episode 5.
Oh, bless this series' heart; it has everything except the kitchen sink. Scratch that; it has plenty of those, too.
The family melodrama runs strong during this series, with enough plot twists to rival a soap opera.
At the risk of sounding redundant, this series is at its best when it focuses more exclusively on Covey or Eleanor.
Chipo Chung has a quiet way of carrying the series in the more current storylines, as Mia Isaac managed to do so phenomenally in the past.
It sucks to say it, but Benny and Byron just aren't that compelling.

The new Hulu limited series “Black Cake” spans not just decades but continents and class structures – all of which made for some pretty impressive challenges for costume designer Hayley Nebauer.
Based on the best-selling book by Charmaine Wilkerson and executive produced by Oprah Winfrey, the eight-episode series moves from the 1940s into the present day, with stops in Jamaica, London, Italy, and Southern California. The show focuses on a woman named Eleanor, whose death unearths many secrets from the past – particularly what happened when she was a young teenager in Jamaica who went by the name of Covey. Mia Isaac stars as the young Covey, with Adrienne Warren and Bashy as Eleanor’s adult children who must reckon with a series of audio recordings their mother left behind as part of her will. “Women of the Movement” and “13 Reasons Why” writer Marissa Jo Cerar is the “Black Cake” creator and showrunner.

This article contains spoilers for episode 2 of Hulu’s “Black Cake.”
“Black Cake” director Natalia Leite carefully constructed the train crash scene in episode two of the Hulu drama series around a different kind of perspective than the typical action scene.
The show’s second episode watches Covey (Mia Isaac) attempt to run away from London with her new friend Eleanor, or “Elly,” in hopes of finding better lives in Scotland. Covey piggybacked off of Elly’s dream to study geology at a school in Scotland with a really good program for it, but before they could take a chance at establishing roots there together, a tragic train crash kills Eleanor.
“There were a few different versions in the script originally of how that train sequence was going to go and it felt to me that, like with a lot of the choices, I wanted to be with Covey. I...

Families are complicated, and everyone has a story.
It's one of many summations one concludes upon tuning into the first three installments of Black Cake.
The series is adapted from the New York Times Bestselling novel by author Charmaine Wilkerson, with an impressive cast led by the incredible Mia Isaac.
Black Cake is an ambitious and tall order, as most book-to-series adaptations tend to be, and whether or not it lives up to the refinement and greatness of the novel is left up to those who are most familiar with the book.
In that sense, Black Cake is a series that feels tailor-made specifically for those familiar with the source material, and if you fall outside the scope of that, there's a solid chance that you'll have some struggles following along with the series.

Since the pandemic, Black female-driven content with universal appeal has found a home on Hulu. Stepping away from the cliched stories that have too often defined others’ efforts, each new project from the streamer, be it “The 1619 Project” or the recent “The Other Black Girl,” grows increasingly more ambitious. “Black Cake,” produced by Oprah Winfrey, pushes the boundaries even further by centering on a biracial, immigrant woman’s experience.

Hulu’s Oprah-Produced Mystery ‘Black Cake’ Is Most Enticing When It Looks Toward the Past: TV Review
We all keep things to ourselves, secrets that, if brought to light, could harm — or even shatter — us or those we love most. While many people have only a few personal confidences tucked away in their hearts, others envelop themselves in a lifetime of lies to survive. A Max revival of HBO’s 2000s reality series that had up-and-coming filmmakers compete for the chance to helm their first feature, A New Generation specifically focused at launch on diverse, female filmmakers, having been shepherded by Miramax and Issa Rae’s production company Hoorae, with Kumail Nanjiani and Gina Prince-Bythewood joining Rae as mentors.
Winbush’s victory on the series led to her directing Gray Matter, a supernatural thriller scripted by Phil Gelatt, which debuted on Max in July. Pic centers on Aurora (Mia Isaac), who all her life has been told that she and her mother possess dangerous superhuman abilities. Shen then discovers, one fateful and fatal night, whether her mother has been speaking the truth.

If she could do “Project Greenlight” again, executive producer Issa Rae told IndieWire, she wouldn’t do a genre film.
On the same day that Max dropped the 10-episode reality series about a first-time filmmaker’s journey to the screen, the streamer also dropped “Gray Matter,” the sci-fi thriller that director Meko Winbush shot in 18 days while “Greenlight” documented the process. At a tight 86 minutes, the film is visually compelling and makes sound use of its lead actors — a solid debut for Winbush and ultimate victory for “Greenlight.”
“Gray Matter” is primarily the story of mother Ayla (Jessica Frances Dukes) and daughter Aurora (Mia Isaac), two superpowered beings living in isolation while Ayla hounds her daughter to control and conceal what she can do. Her fears are substantiated but concealed from Aurora, prompting the lonely teen to sneak out of the house to disastrous effect. Aurora wakes up in the...

Director Meko Winbush’s debut feature film comes in the form of the sci-fi thriller Gray Matter. Interestingly, the film debuted on streaming giant Max on the same day as the docuseries Project Greenlight, which shows us the production of this film from start to finish. It is a product of the show that allows budding directors to create a film with the help of mentors and everything else they need. This year, it reboots with the likes of producer Issa Rae alongside Kumail Nanjiani and Gina Prince-Bythewood. While the show may be something that piques interest because of the premise and the nature of reality TV, the movie is rather lackluster and has nothing new to offer its audience. In a time when the sci-fi genre has grown tremendously, there’s really nothing original about Gray Matter. The film follows a young girl named Aurora who dreams of normalcy...

For aspiring filmmakers, appreciators of how the sausage is made and lovers of atypically blunt reality messiness, “Project Greenlight: A New Generation” is essential viewing. From the Max reboot’s welcome focus on inclusive expansion, its gutsy willingness to show its subjects’ warts in extreme close-up and ultimate promise for a better tomorrow, this is easily the best season of the reality show, which first aired in 2001, and will easily be the best reality show of the year.
Gone are original producers and sometimes on-camera superstars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. In their place are new producers and mentors Kumail Nanjiani, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Issa Rae (who even makes a joke about Damon and Affleck “rolling in their graves”). Their goal is simple on paper, and borderline Sisyphean in execution: Give a first-time feature filmmaker a low-budget genre film to make, and document the entire process from pre-production to premiere.

Netflix has revealed the cast for its limited series adaptation of Erin Hilderbrand’s “The Perfect Couple.”
Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber will play the Groom’s Mother Greer Garrison Winbury and the Groom’s Father Tag Winbury.
The logline for the show reads “Amelia Sacks is about to marry into one of the wealthiest families on Nantucket. Her disapproving future mother-in-law, famous novelist Greer Garrison Winbury, has spared no expense in planning what promises to be the premiere wedding of the season — until a body turns up on the beach. As secrets come to light, the stage is set for a real-life investigation that feels plucked from the pages of one of Greer’s novels. Suddenly, everyone is a suspect.”

The year is almost over, which means it's time for one of the best traditions the internet has to offer: fantastic movie montages of the year that was. Few creators have been in the cinematic mash-up game for as long as YouTube user Sleepy Skunk, whose first currently available trailer mash-up dates back to 2010. Every year since then, through thick and thin, Sleepy Skunk has delivered a beautifully edited supercut of some of the year's most striking cinematic moments. Now, the 2022 video has just dropped, and as expected, it's over six straight minutes of movie magic.
As is now traditional for montages of this sort, the "2022 Movie Trailer Mashup" video shifts moods several times to encompass all the big feelings the world of movies had to offer this year. It starts off intense, dark, and action-packed (shout-out to the inclusion of that shot from "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness...

The Scene 2 Seen podcast is finishing off the week strong!
This week I’ve already published conversations with spectacular talents such as Michael Greyeyes, Naturi Naughton and Juliette Binoche. Today is no different as I chat with actress Mia Isaac and writer-actress-director Hannah Marks.
Isaac is a rising talent who starred in back-to-back films released in July. She made her feature film debut starring in Don’t Make Me Go for Amazon Studios. Directed by Hannah Marks, it follows a single father (John Cho) diagnosed with a potentially fatal brain tumor who takes his 16-year-old daughter, Wally (Isaac), on a road trip to meet her estranged mother.
Isaac then co-starred opposite Zoey Deutch and Dylan O’Brien in the Searchlight Pictures feature for Hulu, Not Okay. In the comedy satire written and directed by Quinn Shepard, Issacs plays Rowan, a young adult dedicated to societal change. Her next projects include a short film and a TV series.

"Not Okay," the new film by writer/director Quinn Shephard starring Zoey Deutch, is a satire of influencers and the terminally online. So it makes sense that they got one of the internet's most controversial influencers to make a cameo in the movie: Caroline Calloway. How did the duo make the shocking appearance happen?
"I think I DMed her and asked her," Shephard tells Popsugar. "I think we also sent a script through her agent, and then we drank a lot of rosé together. I found out that she was down to do it through an Instagram story that she posted."
"Zoey and I were going through a number of attempted recruitments of different cameos for that scene," she explains, but Calloway was "down to make fun of herself." "It was a challenge to find people, [who] not only were down to make fun of themselves, but also their entire team...

When a terrifying incident strikes the City of Lights, Danni unwittingly falls into a lie bigger than she ever imagined. Big swings can make for big misses, and that’s the situation writer-director Quinn Shephard’s internet satire-screed “Not Okay” finds itself in, lining up all kinds of juicy targets regarding fame and shame in our social media age, but proving not so discerning about character, humor, and story when it comes to following-through.
Starring Zoey Deutch as a wannabe influencer with a cringey ploy for viral notoriety, this queasy, ambitious whiff will hopefully prove to be just a sophomore slump for filmmaker Shephard, whose multi-hyphenate 2017 feature debut “Blame” promised much from its coiled, clinical, near-noirish take on sexual jealousy in high school.

Not Okay wastes no time telling us that its central character, a vapid Insta-famous charlatan named Danni Sanders (Zoey Deutch), is a bad person. Like, not a single second: Before the movie has even begun, a disclaimer pops up that warns of “flashing lights, themes of trauma, and an unlikable female protagonist.” Is that last bit simply pure cheekiness on the part of writer-director Quinn Shephard (Blame), or just a cautious way to kick off a cautionary comedy about a liar who incurs the outrage of social media? I’m not saying you couldn’t want to pivot careers from photo-compositor to writer, but to make it seem like a) the former is just a matter of loosely using the lasso tool in Photoshop to make a perfect mask that’s good enough to fool the world and b) it’s a stepping-stone job shunted to the corner and treated like an internship because “anyone can do it” put me in a bad mood right away. I get it, though. Writer-director Quinn Shephard needs her abhorrent lead character Danni Sanders (Zoey Deutch) to have both skills for Not Okay to work. Narrative first; authenticity who?
Whatever helps make the point is fair game in a satire, I guess. And when we’re introduced to Danni’s writing through an unsolicited op-ed about her depression being triggered by missing out on the 9/11 “experience” due to her parents taking her on a cruise that week,...

"The internet likes to turn victims into villains." Searchlight Pictures has debuted the full official trailer for a film titled Not Okay, a cautionary tale about social media fame & fortune. Danni Sanders, the transparently needy protagonist of Not Okay, has goals, but no real grasp of the work they require. They’re more like impatient expectations set to the warp-speed time frame of texting. Her burning aspiration is to be a writer — i.e., someone who’s famous and has lots of followers — a goal that turns into a reality as the result of a bit of attention-hungry social media fakery that she compounds with heinous lies. But as awful as she is, she’s also sweet; without pushing it or insisting that we like her, Zoey Deutch, an actor with considerable comic chops and charisma, finds the vulnerability beneath Danni’s bluster.
