Filmmaker Barry Jenkins, the mastermind behind critically acclaimed pieces of work like Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk, is returning to the big screens. This time, he has another presumed masterpiece prepared for fans, which is also the prequel to the live-action The Lion King from 2019: Mufasa: The Lion King. That being said, he has quite a bit to talk about the upcoming movie.

But of all the factors that have contributed to the making of this soon-to-be-released adventure musical, Jenkins is incredibly grateful to one Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor who was the genius brains behind the songs for his movie. This actor is none other than the 44-year-old songwriter cum actor renowned for masterpieces like 2020’s Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine alumna Melissa Fumero, AnnaSophia Robb (The Act) and Ben Rappaport (For the People) are set as leads in Grosse Pointe Garden Society, NBC’s drama pilot from Jenna Bans, Bill Krebs and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
The drama follows four members of a suburban garden club — three of them played by Fumero, Robb and Rappaport — all from different walks of life, who get caught up in murder and mischief as they struggle to make their conventional lives bloom.
Fumero plays Birdie. Entitled, rich, swathed in Chanel, a smoker, a drinker, self-destructive at times, toxic at others, but not without real pain beneath her facade, Birdie is a successful author whose memoir, “Digging for Gold: Dancing Through Divorce,” is a bestseller.

Andre Braugher, the two-time Emmy-winning actor who starred in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, died on December 11 after suffering a brief illness at 61.
He was known for playing the ethical Captain Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which aired on NBC from 2013 to 2021.
In 1998, Braugher won a lead actor Emmy for his role as Detective Frank Pembleton on NBC’s Homicide: Life on Street, the last year this show aired. He won a second lead actor Emmy for his role as the master criminal, Nick Atwater, in FX’s 2006 miniseries, Thief.
Braugher was born in Chicago, graduated from Stanford University and then attended Juilliard School in the drama division.
His first screen role was as the Union soldier, Corporal Thomas Searles, in the 1989 film, Glory.

It is a cruel, unfair twist of fate that we lost the amazing and talented Andre Braugher this week at the age of 61. Though Braugher appeared in notable film roles over the course of a handful of decades, like his debut role of Corporal Thomas Searles in Edward Zwick's "Glory," Brent Norton in Frank Darabont's adaptation of "The Mist," and real-life journalist and editor Dean Baquet in the recent "She Said," he was best known on the small screen for primarily playing men of authority, like his Emmy-winning turn as Detective Frank Pembleton of the Baltimore Pd on "Homicide: Life on the Street." For many viewers, Braugher is best known for playing another commanding cop, Captain Raymond Holt of the NYPD in the brilliantly silly eight-season sitcom "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." Both when it aired initially, and through binge-rewatches, it's clear that Braugher successfully balanced the serious and the loopy in his performance as Holt,...

At first blush, Andre Braugher cut a similar figure to Raymond Holt, the NYPD captain he spent eight seasons playing on the Fox-turned-NBC sitcom “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” Both were imposing figures who carried a sense of gravitas: Braugher as a Juilliard-trained, Emmy-winning dramatic actor; Holt as a gay, Black police officer who’d overcome prejudice to climb his agency’s ranks. Both found themselves in a working environment with a zaniness that was superficially at odds with their well-earned reputations, whether a joke-filled network comedy or the precinct it was named for.
But just like his character, Braugher’s last major leading role in a television series before his death on Monday at just 61, the performer took naturally to this new environment. The straight man is a classic archetype in an ensemble comedy, and Captain Holt is initially introduced as a somber foil to Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg), a “Die...

Her long-term career goal was to become a captain and even go beyond that, but she was able to switch off her serious mindset and be goofy every now and then and it was never more apparent...

Do you like your sitcoms lighthearted with a hint of mystery? Do you think Jake Peralta is an amazing "detective slash genius"? Do you often restrain yourself from blurting out "title of your sex tape" when someone says something that sounds unintentionally inappropriate? Then you're probably a fan of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," the cop comedy starring Andy Samberg.
"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" debuted on Fox in 2013, one year after Samberg's exit from "Saturday Night Live." His "Nine-Nine" character, Jake Peralta, is a detective with the NYPD. As with many Samberg roles, Peralta is an endearing goofball, an adult who faces the challenge of growing up without letting go of the boisterous joy that some mistake for immaturity.
After five seasons, Fox unceremoniously canceled "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" in 2018. However, NBC picked it up a day later, ultimately airing the show for three more seasons. There are 153 episodes, and every fan has their favorite. From the...

While it may have been difficult to watch "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" get the axe from NBC, a comedy about a group of good people within the NYPD actually trying to do good for their community during a very real influx of injustice made their genuine efforts look all too much like a fantasy. Although the series has left us, when "B99" wanted to be funny, it had some of the most hilarious writing on television, and the stacked ensemble cast always came to play.
As with any great sitcom, however, some of the series most memorable moments involve the addition of a surprise guest star to the mix. "B99" has featured such a diverse roster as Lou Diamond Phillips, Patton Oswalt, Jenny Slate, and Sterling K. Brown, but it was in their first season where series creators/writers Dan Goor and Michael Schur brought out one of their funniest guest spots in Adam Sandler.

Halloween is never without shenanigans!
On Blockbuster Season 1 Episode 3, the gang must contend with a pair of twin pranksters, a new intern causes grief for Carlos, while Kayla and Connie investigate a potential murder.
It's got all the makings of a classic Halloween episode.
The Damon/Carlos plot is the best part of the whole episode.
It was painfully obvious the entire time that Damon was trying to get Carlos to like him, but Carlos was blind to it due to his own ego about being the smartest film expert.
If he'd stopped to take notice that he and Damon had much in common (and that he was super cute!), they could have gotten together a lot sooner.
I'm glad the show went there, but it's a shame it had to end so quickly (though it feels on-brand for Damon to be in a Halloween-all-year cult).
Carlos: What the hell is your problem?...

What’s it like working at the last Blockbuster in existence? Well, it’s just like any other workplace comedy, really, except the employees have a bit of a distaste toward Netflix and its algorithms — which might be odd for a series that’s literally a Netflix original. Many beloved television shows are known for having stellar Halloween episodes. "Roseanne" and "Bob's Burgers" truly shine in their spooky specials, and "The Simpsons" has created an institution within an institution with its annual "Treehouse of Horror" installments. "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" shows a similar love for the holiday, kicking the show's wacky antics up a notch for each season's Halloween Heist. Though the show struggled to reconcile its "good guy" NYPD characters with 2020's political climate, which had little use for "copaganda" shows, no matter how nuanced or well-intentioned, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" never lost sight of what made it such a special show. The series used the Halloween Heist episodes to emphasize the squad's devotion to each other along with their hilarious competitive streak that was always rooted in love.

Amy Santiago is one of the most endearing characters on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." She's utterly obsessed with anything that has to do with rules and organization, she'll create binders for just about anything, sets impossibly high standards for herself, and is totally obsessed with getting Captain Holt's (Andre Braugher) approval. She is a goody-two-shoes, and she's okay with that.
Amy is constantly stressed because she needs to exert control over everything in her life. When things don't go her way, she is predisposed to bouts of anxiety and panic, which also becomes one of her character's defining traits. As per actress Melissa Fumero, who played Amy on the NBC series for eight seasons, the character she auditioned for is very different from the one who ended up in the show. Amy Santiago was written as a confident, tough girl, but the character was later modeled after Fumero's own experience with anxiety.

When you work on a show for eight long years — especially one with a tight-knit cast — you're bound to make a few special memories. Such was the case for Melissa Fumero, who played sergeant Amy Santiago on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." Despite being straight-laced, Amy had some of the most exciting scenes in the show, scheming all year so that she could win the Halloween heists and famously interrupted her wedding dress fitting to chase a perp down an alley.
But as ridiculous as some of the episodes may have been, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" had a big impact on Fumero. In an emotional interview that was filmed as the show wrapped up, the actress admitted that "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" had "changed [her] life" and that she was incredibly grateful for how "warm and nice and chill" everyone always was behind the scenes. Fumero also shared her favorite scene to film — and it's fitting that it wasn't all that flashy.

Some exciting news for all you Brooklyn Nine-Nine fans: alums Melissa Fumero and Andy Samberg are reuniting in the latter’s upcoming adult animated series, Digman!. The series is created by Andy Samberg and Neil Campbell and produced by CBS Studios alongside Ali Bell and The Lonely Island’s Party Over Here banner. Fumero and Samberg, who played fellow cops-turned-lovers-turned-spouses Jake Peralta and Amy Santiago on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, have spoken very highly of one another through the years. Exclusive: Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), Luka Jones (Shrill), and Julian Gant (Call Me Kat) will star in Bar Fight, a comedy from writer/director Jim Mahoney (Klaus), which wrapped production this week in Los Angeles.
Bar Fight follows exes Nina (Fumero) and Allen (Jones), who split everything in their lives 50/50 after their break-up to avoid any drama—everything, that is, except for their favorite local bar. The film is presented by Particular Crowd and Ingenious Media. Sarah Gabriel and Mark Goldberg of Signature Films produced with James Harris and Mark Lane of Tea Shop Productions. Particular Crowd’s Tomás Yankelevich, Peter Bevan, and Mariana Sanjurjo exec produced, alongside Simon Williams and Jamie Jessop of Ingenious Media.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine was always produced by NBC, and now that its home where it belongs, it’s become a staple of the network’s comedy line-up. The series is also enjoying a new streaming home on Peacock, where it is available to stream with a Premium subscription. Always a critical favorite, the workplace sitcom seemed to be rejuvenated by the network switch, and viewers have responded. According to Deadline, the “last season grew to… 6.4 million viewers overall.” NBC executives were quick to renew the series for season 8 just weeks after its season 7 debut. Then in February, NBC confirmed that season 8 will be the show’s final.
However, a number of events have delayed the return of the series. Besides the obvious production hurdles due to Covid-19 restrictions, showrunner Dan Goor revealed that his writing team threw out completed scripts for the eighth season following George Floyd’s death and the...

Refresh for updates: NBC announced Thursday that Brooklyn Nine-Nine will end with its upcoming eight season. The Andy Samberg-led police comedy will conclude during the 2021-22 broadcast season, finally shutting the doors at the 99th precinct.
The ongoing coronavirus pandemic caused delays on the production of season eight, which will consist of ten episodes.
As news of the show’s final season came around, Brooklyn Nine-Nine stars and co-creator Dan Goor shared fond memories about their time working on the show, which first aired on Fox back in September 2013. In a statement posted to the official Brooklyn Nine-Nine Twitter account, Goor reminisced on first pitching the show with co-creator Mike Schur and his time on the series.

A French-Canadian remake of the hit cop comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” titled “Escouade 99” and transplanted to Quebec, has left people baffled. And that includes one of the original stars of the ongoing police procedural sitcom, once at Fox and now living at NBC. Melissa Fumero, who plays rule-abiding sergeant Amy Santiago, took to Twitter to blast the remake’s apparently whitewashed casting, with a non-Latina actress playing the Cuban-American star’s role. Another role, Fumero noted, also went to a non-Latina actress originally played by Stephanie Beatriz. In the new version, which just released a trailer, the characters are now dubbed as Fanny, portrayed by actress Mylène Mackay, and Rosalie, played by Bianca Gervais.
“This is like peeking through another dimension,” Fumero tweeted this week. “Gotta say though after watching this…I’m suddenly curious about the Latina population in Quebec. Just sayin’.”
Fumero continued to tweet her reactions to the new show.

2020 continues, as a first trailer for the Quebec remake of Brooklyn Nine-Nine has now been released. Yes, you read all of those words correctly. Do not adjust your screen.
Escouade 99 (Squad 99 in English) really does appear to be a near shot-for-shot remake of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, with its original cast replaced by the likes of Mickaël Gouin, Bianca Gervais, Mylène Mackay, Widemir Normil and Guy Jodoin. The Quebec version was directed by Patrick Huard (Bon Cop Bad Cop) and it follows “a group of endearing and out of the ordinary detectives who fight crime at Escouade 99 in Quebec City.”

Welcome to the family, Mac!
It's no surprise that Jake wanted to name his child after John McClane from Diehard, but I still can't believe Amy let him.
On Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 7 Episode 13, Amy and Jake's journey to the birth of their child unfolded in typical Brooklyn Nine-Nine fashion.
There were insane twists and turns, but everything worked out alright in the end. It's a bizarre birth story, but a memorable one.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine is great at season finales. Even though Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 7 was much shorter than its predecessors, it was able to come to a satisfying conclusion that tied up all loose ends.

Jake and Amy are having a boy!
Unfortunately for Jake, this means the dreaded Peralta curse might come into play.
On Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 7 Episode 10, Jake's father warns him about the one thing all Peraltas have in common: bad relationships with their dads.

We've always known Jake's relationship with his dad has been strained, but hearing his dad say that their reconciliation might just be a "blip" was a low blow.
Jake's struggled with his issues with his father for years. He's worked long and hard to build a bridge with him, so hopefully, that was just a throwaway line, and not foreshadowing.
It turns out that Jake's daddy issues are genetic. His father, Rob, has a terrible relationship with his grandfather, "The Admiral." If you're calling your family member The Admiral, you know something's off.
The Admiral ended up making Jake's dad look good.

Six months fly by on Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 7 Episode 6.
There are over 600 pregnancies in this episode, but not the one we wanted.
Our favorite couple Jake and Amy are the ones "trying" this week without any results.
Nothing is worse for Amy Santiago than failing a test, and she's not dealing well with the fact that she can't study for this. But that doesn't stop her from trying.
Her "pregnancy war room" was very intimidating, but it only goes to show how dedicated she is to have a child. With so much research and effort put into this conception, they'll hopefully have a lucky break soon.
