For a small acquisition by a very big company, Facebook’s scooping up of the newborn app tbh sure manifested a lot of justifiable unhappiness in certain knowledgeable circles.
It also provided a nice, tight spotlight on a huge question: What companies will be the platforms of choice for Generation Z, the kids who are the successors to the Millennials who have dominated culture and conversation the past 15 years? And will Facebook let any of these platforms survive outside Facebook’s suffocating embrace?
Please don’t overlook what happens with Gen Z. Studies estimate the generation at around 80 million people, roughly a quarter of the Us population. The group is going to matter a lot for a long while in American culture and technology, and already commands huge buying power and influence.

Terranova announced on Tuesday she is relocating with her family from New York to Los Angeles.
There are no plans to replace the executive, who joined Tribeca as senior programmer in 2007 and was named festival director in 2014.
Tribeca Enterprises executive vice-president Paula Weinstein has delegated Terranova’s duties among the current festival staff.
“It has been a great pleasure to work with an incredible team and contribute to such a forward-thinking institution,” said Terranova.
“Over my time here we built a programme that celebrates film’s brightest voices, but also made Tribeca a must-stop for discovery across all storytelling platforms from Vr to TV to online work – something I am very proud of. I plan to continue supporting great storytelling in my next endeavour.”
“Genna has made valuable contributions to the organisation that will be felt for years to come,” said Jane Rosenthal, executive chair of Tribeca Enterprises. “We wish her the best on her move to...

Facebook’s recent algorithmic shifts dropped a big bomb on the bottom lines of many publishers with a newly emphasized “Friends and Family First” approach. The resulting handwringing, however, missed a broader question: What should publishers be doing, on Facebook and everywhere else, to build sustainable businesses for the long-term?
It’s increasingly possible, perhaps even obvious by now, that we’re doing this all wrong. To make matters worse, we’re almost certainly feeding into our readers’ problematic and compulsive behaviors.
Publishers have been shoveling content into the Internet maw at increasing rates, trying to generate enough cash to keep going. But they face an impossible conundrum. Even as they create more content to bring in more ad dollars, all that content devalues the ad rates the stories can attract. More creates less, in a vicious cycle.

Curious about all those Region B Hammer Blu-rays from overseas, the ones requiring a region-free player? As a public service, Savant has solicited an expert opinion (you'll have to take my word for that) of a film restoration/transfer specialist who is also an informed fan of the filmic output of the little horror studio at Bray. I know, real Hammer fans buy first and worry about quality later, but this little guide might be of help to the rest of us budget-conscious collectors.
A 'Guest' article Written by a trusted Savant correspondent.
(Note: I receive plenty of emails asking for advice about the quality of Region B Blu-rays, most of which I don't see. I have access to industry people qualified to compare and judge the discs, but they stay off the record, because their employers forbid them to go online with their opinions. Duck Dynasty: The Musical is officially theater-bound! Considering Broadway is pretty gay -- or at least, gay-friendly -- and considering what duck patriarch Phil Robertson has said in the past about homosexuality leading to bestiality, it may seem like an odd fit.
Until you find out it’s actually a Vegas musical. That makes more sense.
The Duck Commander Musical is a “modern-day Beverly Hillbillies story” about a “backwoods family” that strikes it rich. Don’t expect a satire or tell-all either, the Roberston family had script and casting approval.
Watch: Which Duck Dynasty star wants to be on Dancing With the Stars?!
Producer Michael David, whose credits include Jersey Boys, told The New York Times, “The show will end up challenging the views and assumptions of people across the political spectrum, more than most theater does.”
It’s being staged by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (Newsies) and is based on Willie and Korie Robertson’s 2012 book...

Short film programmers from Berlin and Tribeca called for lighter fare at a masterclass in Abu Dhabi.
Filmmakers from the UAE put questions about shorts to festival programmers at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival this week and wanted to know if their submissions needed a strong “message”.
“We don’t want a message, we’re over that,” laughed Maike Hohne from the Berlinale. “Seriously though, you don’t need to have a ‘message’ in your film.”
Tribeca’s Ben Thompson added: “There’s a lot less comedy in submissions than drama and festival programmers love comedy. They don’t tend to win a lot of awards but do get into a lot of festivals because the world is a serious place.”
The panel, titled The Long and Short of It – I’ve Made a Short Film, Now What?, also included Alice Kharoubi from the Cannes Film Festival and Nina Rodriguez from Guanajuato International Film Festival.

Hello Broadway World Our fourth cabaret at 54 Below went really well Milly and I had such a great time-we had the chance to perform with some of our favorite actors, Ben Thompson, who Milly shared the stage with in Matilda The Musical, and the incredibly talented Laura Osnes who originated the title role in Cinderella. We got to try out some new material, including a medley in which we sing duets together with bits of choreography included which was a bit nerve-wracking but I think it paid off-the audience seemed to really enjoy the show.

The west runs wild in Lawrence Kasdan's Wyatt Earp, but did we really need so much gunslinging action?
Wyatt Earp (1994)
Director: Lawrence Kasdan
Entertainment grade: D–
History grade: B
Wyatt Earp was a legendary wild west lawman. He is remembered particularly for his role in the 1881 gunfight at the Ok Corral.
Romance
Trainee lawyer Wyatt Earp (Kevin Costner) marries his sweetheart, Urilla Sutherland. Historians know almost nothing about her, so the lovey-dovey perfect marriage shown here is mostly made up. It is true that she died the following year, though the film shows her at a middling stage of pregnancy and claims typhoid fever as the cause. In real life, she was ill, but may have died in childbirth. Devastated, Earp sits on his front lawn and drinks most of a bottle of booze. Then he makes the rest into a Molotov cocktail and lobs it through his own...

It isn't often, but when opportunities like this come along, we wish we lived closer to New York City. Carrie has returned to the stage in a newly revised Off-Broadway production that began January 31, and to help make up for the fact that many of us won't be able to see it, we have a trio of stills to share.
Playbill provided the photos, which feature Molly Ranson in the title role, opposite Tony Award nominee Marin Mazzie as her religiously fanatical mother, Margaret White.
Stafford Arima helms the latest incarnation of the pop musical that has been retooled by the original writers, who have refined the focus of the story, including lyric rewrites and several new songs. Carrie has a score by Academy Award winner Michael Gore and Academy Award-winning lyricist Dean Pitchford and a book by original film screenwriter Lawrence D. Cohen. Doctor Doom – Badass of the Week
A special edition of Badass of the Week by Ben Thompson
“Show me the puny mortal who does not tremble at the name of Doctor Doom!”
I’ve always held a soft spot in my heart for comic books characters who go out there with no inherent super-powers and roll the dice in toe-to-toe combat against genetically-engineered superhuman mutant warriors from some quadrant of space where people are born with the muscular density of a rhinoceros. Never is this more true than in situations where the aforementioned character is a sort-of-misunderstood supervillain who wants nothing more than an eternal end to war, conflict, substandard wages, hunger, and illiteracy – and who seeks to accomplish these lofty idealistic goals by violently obliterating all who stand in his way and replacing every government on Earth-616 with an autocratic New World Order devoted to worshipping him as a living God among mortals.

Batman is a crime-fighting vigilante ninja detective who dresses up in bullet-proof armor, wears a gigantic black cape, hides in the darkest corners of the city, and then sneak-attack face-kicks the world’s most sadistic criminal douchebags until every felon in the tri-state area is passed out unconscious in a Gotham City Prison complaining about how they’ve got concussions so bad that their brains are leaking out their noses. He’s one of comics’ most beloved, longest-running, and badass superheroes, an ultra-genius master of stealth and hand-to-hand combat, and a man so over-the-top hardcore that the mere mention of his name has been known to cause incontinence among the seedier members of human society.

Paperback
By Ben Thompson
Harper Paperbacks
2009
So rare is it that a book grabs my attention, and bitch slaps me while still in the book store. Such was the case with Badass by Ben Thompson. True to its name Badass is a relentless onslaught of the toughest Warlords, Vikings, Samurai, Pirates, Gunfighters, and Military Commanders to ever live.
At first I thought there was no way in the name of Zeus’ Thundering ass that a book could contain so much “BadassITUDE”! Man was I wrong. Badass grabs you, punches you in the face, and makes you feel as if you should be in the kitchen making It a sandwich.
From the moment I opened this book I was bombarded by quotes from memorable Badass’s throughout history. As I continued on, I...

Ellen Ripley (Alien/Aliens, 1979/86)
Warrant Officer Ellen Ripley is just hanging out on the intergalactic transport ship Nostromo, leading the often-dull life of a Space Teamster, when all of a sudden, out of nowhere, her idiot captain decides to land on the remote planet Lv-426 to investigate some stupid distress signal emanating from a crashed spaceship. Now, as we all know, responding to distress signals is one of the top five most insanely boneheaded tactical decisions any science-fiction/horror space traveler can possibly make, but this doesn’t stop Captain Numbnuts from ordering his crew to get their asses down there and dope out the spooky alien wreckage.
Of course, once they go down to investigate, some dumbass crewmember decides it would be totally hilarious to stick his face in one of the strange egglike things he finds in the smoldering wreckage of the derelict ship.
