T-minus two years for the release date of the upcoming Project Hail Mary. Amazon MGM Studios has finally set a date for the Ryan Gosling astronaut thriller. Deadline recently reported that the film, which is being directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, is preparing for launch on March 20, 2026. There are currently no other big titles scheduled for that weekend. Amy Pascal, Gosling, Lord, Miller, Aditya Sood, Rachel O’Connor and Andy Weir are all on board as producers of the film. Drew Goddard wrote the adapted screenplay based on the Andy Weir novel. Weir had also written the novel for The Martian, which served as source material for the Matt Damon film of the same name. Goddard is also set to executive produce with his Goddard Textiles partner Sarah Esberg, along with Ken Kao.

It looks like Ryan Gosling is going back to space. Deadline reports that the “Barbie” and “The Fall Guy” actor will star in Phil Lord & Christopher Miller‘s upcoming adaptation of “Project Hail Mary” at Amazon MGM. And if Lord & Miller’s film is anything like Hollywood’s last Andy Weir adaptation, 2015’s “The Martian,” then “Project Hail Mary” will be a homerun for all involved.

Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios has begun the countdown for Project Hail Mary, its Ryan Gosling-starring, Phil Lord- and Christopher Miller-directed space adventure, which has been given a March 20, 2026 release date. No other wide entries are on that weekend.
Producers are Amy Pascal, Gosling, Lord, Miller, Aditya Sood, Rachel O’Connor and Andy Weir.
The movie, filmed for Imax, is based on Weir’s (The Martian) novel and set in the near future. Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a schoolteacher-turned-astronaut who wakes up from a coma, alone, on a space station with no memory of who he is or his mission. His memory returns in bursts and he pieces together that he was sent to the Tau Ceti solar system, 12 light-years from Earth, to reverse the impact of a space event that had already hurled our planet into the early stages of an Ice Age. CinemaCon is in full swing. Studios are unveiling some new exclusive pictures and information at upcoming projects. We’ve gotten first looks at movies like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and trailers for Trap and The Joker: Folie à Deux. Some promotional materials have shown a look at Gladiator II and Wolverine’s new mask for Deadpool & Wolverine. Recently, Amazon MGM has revealed some new footage of the upcoming Christmas comedy Red One, which stars Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans and J.K. Simmons.
Deadline reports on the ten minutes that Amazon has screened for the CinemaCon audience. First off, while this is a movie that has been set for Prime Video, the footage is said to be very theatrical and it is revealed that Red One will indeed be hitting theaters on November 15. Not much can be said by way of details as those who saw the footage are instructed to keep their lips sealed.

While Amazon MGM Studios didn’t take the stage at CinemaCon, they did meet with exhibitors and key press to strut their future theatrical slate, in particular they showed off ten minutes of the Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ movie Red One. While we agree to keep mum about the details of the Santa Claus rescue movie, let’s just say the originally conceived for Prime Video title is definitely meant for theatrical, which is where it’s going on Nov. 15; the only wide release currently on that weekend.
Let’s just say that Red One is a fire-breathing Christmas action movie that completely reinvents the holiday genre. There hasn’t been a mass appealing Christmas tentpole in six years, the last being Illumination/Universal’s The Grinch which made over a half billion worldwide. From Phil Lord and Chris Miller comes the screen adaptation of Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary, with Ryan Gosling filming in London this summer.
Based on the novel of the same name by Andy Weir, the movie Project Hail Mary is pressing ahead, and filming is set to get underway this summer. That in itself isn’t a big surprise, given that the news of production beginning landed earlier this year. What we now know is that the cast and crew are heading to London to shoot the movie.
Ryan Gosling is starring in Project Hail Mary, which is being directed by Phil Lord and Chirs Miller. Lord and Miller have become more known for their producing in recent times, and this is their first directorial effort since – crikey – 2014’s duo of The Lego Movie and 22 Jump Street.

A case can be made that Drew Goddard is one of the more underappreciated genre voices to break through in the last 20 years. The filmmaker has had an impressive track record, from writing and directing a bonafide cult classic like Cabin in the Woods to also penning one of the best sci-fi movies of this century, 2015’s The Martian, which was adapted from the Andy Weir novel of the same name and earned Goddard an Oscar nomination. He also wrote the original Cloverfield and helmed the extremely overlooked Bad Times at the El Royale. In nerd circles, his name should be revered.
Even with that esteem though, we cannot ignore that a vast shadow of trepidation descended Wednesday afternoon when the news hit: Goddard has been tapped to write and direct what will be a fifth and currently untitled Matrix film—a first for a series which up until now...

Can you feel the Kenergy? Ryan Gosling has launched a new production company, and he’s wasted no time in signing that company to a first-look film deal with Amazon MGM Studios.
Gosling has launched General Admission, which he will run alongside Jessie Henderson, a former executive with Apple Original Films over the last three years. Their company will produce movies across all genres for both theaters and streaming that are “fun, transportive entertainment for everyone.”
Under the deal with Amazon MGM, the studio will have the first look on any narrative features General Admission produces, some of which will star Gosling. It’s a three-year first look deal, and Amazon MGM says the movies will be made for both theatrical and streaming.

J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow is a terrifying yet hopeful tale of survival based on the book of the same name about the survivors of the 1972 Uruguayan Flight 571 plane crash in the Andes. This isn’t the first time a film has been made on this story, yet the 50-year-old tale somehow remains relevant today. What Bayona excels at is eliciting a certain harrowing, and simultaneously optimistic feeling within the viewer that perhaps no other filmmaker can do as well. Society of the Snow may be familiar in its story, but there’s something very new to the way it’s been presented, and on a second watch, it struck me how this could’ve been so tedious and disturbing to watch, but it’s simply a humanistic film. What makes Society of the Snow so compelling is its subtle dialogue and compact camera angles that make us feel for all the characters.

Paramount Television Studios has acquired the rights to Jakob Kerr’s upcoming debut novel “Dead Money,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The rights for the book were sold to the studio in a seven-figure deal following a bidding war. The book will be published by Ballantine, an imprint of Penguin Random House, in summer 2024.
Beth Schacter, previously the co-showrunner on “Billions” and the showrunner of “Super Pumped, will serve as showrunner and executive producer on “Dead Money.” Kerr will also executive produce along with Allie Goss of Brillstein.
According to the official description, the book “follows Mackenzie Clyde, an ‘investigator’ (some may call her a fixer) for San Francisco’s preeminent venture capital firm. There's nothing Hollywood loves more than a snappy, propulsive, made-for-movies book premise from some of the most exciting authors around. Just in the last decade alone, we've seen writer Andy Weir parlay the breakout success of his debut work "The Martian" and its 2015 adaptation by director Ridley Scott into another upcoming movie deal, this time headlined by filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller. More recently, "Gone Girl" author Gillian Flynn has had "Sharp Objects" turned into a major HBO series, while she teamed up with no less a talent than Steve McQueen to adapt the British TV series "Widows" into one of the most brilliant, under-appreciated thrillers of the last several years. Now, movie fans would be well advised to remember the name T.J. Newman, who appears ready to become the next big name-brand novelist around.

While I truly appreciate a compelling Korean ‘melo,‘ there are times when the drama becomes overwhelming, hijacking the plot’s integrity. My anticipation for The Moon was sky-high, and with its stellar cast, including popular actors, and my high expectations from the Hallyu industry, I entered with excitement. The realms of space and the future have been thoroughly explored in Korean media, with works like Space Sweepers and The Silent Sea finding success. Personally, I encountered similar concerns with ‘Space Sweeper,’ starring Song Jong-Ki, as I did with The Moon. Both films are excessively lengthy and strain for an emotional impact that ultimately falls short. I understand that this is a cultural denominator, similar to what we have with Indian films, but the criticism still stands when the film becomes tedious and feels overstretched.
The Moon details a space expedition to the moon conducted by Korea’s very own Naro Space Center.

The German-language film Paradise‘s opening act sets up a movie that is both mysterious and intriguing, leading us to believe we may finally have an original sci-fi mystery that’s unique in its story and made well. But instead, after 15 minutes, it follows the same old uninspired tropes and gives us no more science, only tired cliches and reversed character arcs. I mean, I was actually kind of excited by the fact that a woman leads a company that says, “Stop being ageist,” but at the same time uses the procedures that her company provides for herself to make her younger. It’s an interesting subject that could lead to so many different outcomes! In a time when big Pharma is a hot topic, people would want to eat up such content, but alas, this film does nothing new. Come to think of it, the Cillian Murphy starrer “In Time...

Phil Lord and Chris Miller have made their careers out of tackling "bad" ideas, as they pair would gladly -- and only half-jokingly -- tell you. Rebooting the '80s TV procedural curiosity "21 Jump Street" as an action-comedy movie? Turning the Lego toy brand into a genre-mixing, franchise-blending cinematic universe? Bringing together characters as tonally removed as Miles Morales, Spider-Man Noir, and Peter Porker for a superhero multiverse film that dabbles in experimental animation techniques? All ideas that could've easily gone terribly wrong and yet, under Lord and Miller's watch, they gave rise to hugely successful and even game-changing movies.
Every rule has at least one exception, though, and for Lord and Miller, it's "Solo: A Star Wars Story." The pair were notoriously several months into production on the Han Solo origin movie when they parted ways with Lucasfilm over creative differences ... or they were fired, it kind of...

Everyone loves a good survival story. There is something innately satisfying about watching a protagonist push themselves toward the finish line despite all the odds stacked against them, and emerge stronger in the end. Ridley Scott encapsulates this exact feeling in his 2015 science-fiction thriller "The Martian," in which a lone astronaut stranded on Mars must rely on his scientific ingenuity to make it back to Earth. Unlike most of Scott's other sci-fi offerings, such as "Prometheus" and "Alien," which prompt broader metaphysical interpretations, "The Martian" is a straightforward tale about human persistence in the face of utter isolation and hopelessness.
In both Andy Weir's book "The Martian" and Scott's adaptation of the same, the scientific aspects of the story are not mere embellishments, but critical pieces of the central narrative. This raises the age-old tussle between scientific accuracy and making science-related stories accessible to a general audience. Scott solves...

A lot of Hollywood's greatest actors are willing to do almost anything to get into character. From method thespians like Daniel Day-Lewis willing to alienate everyone they work with, to folks like Christian Bale going through dangerous body transformations, some actors are willing to go to some wild lengths for the sake of their craft.
It's interesting to imagine the reality where someone like Day-Lewis had accepted the lead role in Ridley Scott's "The Martian." Based on the 2011 Andy Weir novel, the film follows astronaut Mark Watney, who becomes stranded alone on the planet Mars after a severe dust storm forces his team to blast off of the planet without him. This forced Watney to scramble to survive on his own with only his wits and his will to live. 2015's "The Martian" is a far lighter and funnier sci-fi movie than its premise might suggest. Set in the year 2035, the film stars Matt Damon as Mark Watney, a cheeky NASA astronaut who's accidentally stranded on Mars after a mission to the red planet goes sideways. Left on his own, Mark proceeds to make a video diary about his efforts to stay alive until NASA can formulate a plan to bring him safely home. Elsewhere, his fellow space travelers decide to take matters into their own hands as they make their way back to Earth.
Much of the comedy in "The Martian" comes in the form of Mark's gallows humor, whether he's making light of his dire situation or cracking wise about his mission commander Melissa Lewis (Jessica Chastain) and her love of groovy 1970s disco tunes. Also helping to prevent the story from becoming too downbeat is Ridley Scott's direction,...

Ridley Scott made his name directing science-fiction films, but it's not a genre he latched himself to. Between 1982 and 2007, he was only involved in two sci-fi productions, and they were really just two extensions of one project: "Blade Runner," and the re-edited "Final Cut" of that film, which restored the film as he first envisioned it.
Since the 2010s, Scott has explored science fiction more than in the preceding decades. His "Alien" prequels, "Prometheus" and "Covenant" were divisive (though I'm a fan), and the HBO Max series "Raised By Wolves" met a premature cancellation. Scott's most popular 21st-century sci-fi story was 2015's "The Martian." That film racked up a blockbuster gross and earned the director his best reviews since "American Gangster" in 2007. Contrary to its title, the lead is an Earthling: astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon), who's left stranded on Mars and must survive alone for 18 months. When compared to "Alien" and "Blade Runner,...

The hallmarks of a Ridley Scott sci-fi film include characters trapped in bleak situations, who persevere against impossible odds to survive. This zeal to survive is an integral aspect of Scott's "Alien," while his "Blade Runner" is an existential meditation on what it means to be human. In Scott's long tradition of films about human survival, "The Martian" emerges as a remarkable tale about an astronaut stranded on Mars grappling with the technological challenges that threaten to endanger his life. Scott's "The Martian," based on Andy Weir's brilliant novel of the same name, does its best to not brush over the science in science fiction, as Mark Watney's (Matt Damon) survival hinges on adapting to a hostile planet that only scientific ingenuity can help make habitable.

"The Martian" might be best known as a sci-fi film, but at its core, it's an exploration of loneliness and the will to live. The 2015 Ridley Scott film is based on the novel of the same name by Andy Weir and stars Matt Damon as Mark Watney, a scientist mistakenly left on Mars during a 2035 mission. Weir is a former computer programmer who dug deep into the science behind Watney's survival on the Red Planet when writing the novel, which he originally self-published online.

It took an especially strong script to lure Ridley Scott back to the world of science fiction. Two of Scott's earliest films, "Alien" and "Blade Runner," remain enduring sci-fi classics. However, after his "1984" TV commercial introducing Apple's Macintosh computer, he moved on from the genre and never looked back — until the script for "The Martian" landed on his desk some three decades later.
Written by Drew Goddard, the director of "The Cabin in the Woods" and "Bad Times at the El Royale," the script for "The Martian" adapted the Hugo Award-winning novel of the same name by Andy Weir. At...

"In the face of overwhelming odds, I'm left with only one option: I'm going to have to science the s*** out of this."
So spoke Mark Watney (Matt Damon), the title character in Ridley Scott's 2015 film "The Martian," easily one of the best films of its year. Written by Drew Goddard after the novel by Andy Weir, the film had a pretty simple thesis: Science, knowledge, and engineering know-how were not just superpowers, but could be the stuff of ripping entertainment. Most importantly, "The Martian" reveals that our most human quality — our good humor — will be our most vital survival tool. The...

“The Afterparty” just got another suspect … or another victim … in the form of Ken Jeong.
Jeong has joined the just-started-filming second season of the Apple TV+ whodunit comedy show as a series regular, TheWrap has learned.
Details about Jeong’s character weren’t provided, but he joins the cast of the sophomore season along with fellow newcomers Elizabeth Perkins, Zach Woods, Paul Walter Hauser, Poppy Liu, Anna Konkle, Jack Whitehall and Vivian Wu. Sam Richardson, Zoë Chao and Tiffany Haddish return from the first season.
Like the inaugural season, this season of “The Afterparty” takes place at a gathering – this time a wedding (speculation suggests its Richardson and Chao’s wedding). Also like the first season, each episode will follow the format of a different movie genre.
Series creator Christopher Miller returns, although this time around he won’t be directing every episode, which is understandable considering how many projects...

Updated with confirmation and exit memos: MGM motion picture group chairman Michael De Luca and president Pam Abdy are leaving the studio, sources said. This follows the acquisition of the studio by Amazon.
As the pieces fall into place on merged studios like Warner Bros. Discovery (which has recently been a rumored landing place for De Luca and Abdy), the pending development sheds light on how Amazon will merge the assets of the venerable MGM into Amazon after the latter paid 8.45 billion for the studio and its 4,000-title library. De Luca has been rumored for numerous other jobs, but had a contract that would run through early next year. Now that they’ve been let out, they will be able to take one of the opportunities out there. MGM is likely to run as a theatrical-fueled sister to Amazon, and they will look to hire a new head to run that studio.

Amazon bought MGM for its history — but not necessarily its standalone future.
The e-commerce giant surprised Hollywood on Thursday by announcing the completion of its $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM, an iconic Hollywood brand whose presence in the modern entertainment industry has diminished over time and numerous changes in ownership since the mid-1980s.
The Federal Trade Commission had suggested it might object to Amazon’s purchase of MGM, raising the prospect of a long fight. On the heels of Thursday’s closing announcement, the FTC still raised the threat of a future challenge to the combination.
Analysts expect the tech company to try and exploit MGM’s best-known pieces of intellectual property for future gain — but don’t believe the studio has a long path ahead as a separate, influential entity.

Photo: 'Dune' The 2010s: A Great Decade for Science Fiction There’s a very old and very tired question that nevertheless raises its head among genre fans: What was the golden age of science fiction? It’s a loaded question for several reasons, but for a movie-centric audience, it can be best answered with “now.” The 2010s are not exactly “now,” but they’re practically yesterday for most of us — and the 2010s were a very good time for science fiction, whether it be in Cinema, TV, literature, or video games. During this period, we saw a major resurgence in both ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Star Trek’, a revival of ‘The Twilight Zone’, a decade-defining anthology series with ‘Black Mirror’, original sci-fi epics by Christopher Nolan with ‘Inception’ and ‘Interstellar’, and the list just keeps going. We got two mega-bestsellers with Ready Player One by Ernest Cline (ditto its...

When it came out in 2015, "The Martian" filled a huge void in modern filmmaking. While the past few decades have produced many modern science fiction classics that take a cynical look at the future and humanity's eventual decline. "The Martian" thankfully offers a more optimistic sci-fi spectacle, showing how humanity grows more connected as alliances are formed between nations to save one man's life.
"The Martian" is also a refreshing film because it's a big blockbuster that isn't attempting to start a franchise. It's not an original story, as it's based on a novel by Andy Weir, but the self-contained nature of its...

Andy Weir's book is a poster child for the way that, just occasionally, a self-published novel can go the whole way to global fame and Drew Goddard's adaptation brings it faithfully to life. With Ridley Scott at the helm, it could be argued the space stuff would always be in good hands, as the story of an astronaut stranded on a mission to Mars unfolds - but he's helped enormously by Matt Damon's sympathetic central performance. What marks his Mark Watney out from a lot of other stranded souls in cinema is his sheer ingenuity and resourcefulness with which he goes about his task - not to mention a large amount of humour, such as the lament that "it's been seven days since I ran out of ketchup". Being lost in space has rarely been more exhilarating or fun.

I did not intend this to turn into Sarah Andersen Week here at Antick Musings, but why not? She’s funny, and the two books I read nearly back-to-back are funny in very similar ways, which could potentially be interesting.
Fangs is a small unjacketed hardcover, stylish and blood-red. I believe it was Andersen’s fourth solo book, following three collections of her “Sarah’s Scribbles” strip. There is a goth-y young woman on the cover, as you can see. Readers will generally assume she is a vampire, and assume that this is her story.
That’s correct: she’s Elsie. On the first page, she’s in a bar for monsters, meeting a new young man (Jimmy). They quickly start a relationship, and we quickly learn this is not a book that will tell us a story – like Sarah’s Scribbles, these are funny comics about a situation, and...

Michael De Luca may be the big winner from Wednesday’s blockbuster news that Amazon will purchase Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for $8.45 billion.
Though insiders caution that no decisions have been made, there is speculation around Hollywood that De Luca will play a major role in helping the e-commerce giant monetize its new library of 4,000 MGM film titles. It’s an arsenal of intellectual property that includes “Robocop,” “The Silence of the Lambs,” “Rocky,” and, of course, James Bond. That list of heavy-hitting films and franchises is one that De Luca, who has held top jobs at New Line and Sony, may be best positioned to exploit.
As a producer, De Luca has shown a deft hand at juggling prestige fare such as “The Social Network” and “Captain Phillips” along with more broadly commercial offerings such as the “Fifty Shades of Grey” films — a sweet spot Amazon has been trying to reach in recent years.

With the $8.75 billion Amazon-MGM deal wrapped, the question around Hollywood now is who will run it and whether MGM execs will cash big checks and head for the exits.

The e-commerce giant’s CEO Jeff Bezos, during his company’s annual meeting today, alluded to Amazon Studios management and MGM management working together “to re-imagine MGM’s IP for the 21st century.” But who and how is still to be announced, raising questions about the role among others of Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke; Mark Burnett, chairman of the MGM Worldwide Television Group; and MGM Motion Picture Group chairman Michael De Luca. James Bond has a new home: Amazon and MGM announced a definitive merger agreement under which Amazon will acquire MGM for $8.45 billion.
MGM, founded in 1924, complements Amazon Studios, which has primarily focused on producing TV programming, the companies said. Amazon will help “preserve MGM’s heritage and catalog of films” and provide customers with greater access to these existing works, the companies added.
For Amazon, snapping up MGM — which has more than 4,000 movies and 17,000 TV shows in its catalog — is a way to supercharge its Prime Video service with a slew of well-known entertainment titles. In addition, Amazon is anticipating being able to mine Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer properties like the Pink Panther, Rocky and, yes, the 007 franchises for new originals.

Project Hail Mary sees sci-fi author Andy Weir going back to what made The Martian so successful.
“Project Hail Mary, the third book by Andy Weir, finds the author going back to what made him famous in the first place. Weir rose to fame with The Martian, a book (and eventually a movie) about a man stranded on Mars who uses complicated, compelling science to get himself home. While Weir’s second book, Artemis, deviated from that formula, his latest harkens back to The Martian’s formula, just with bigger stakes and one major addition.”

John Boyega is officially returning for a sequel to hit sci-fi comedy horror Attack the Block.

After the runaway success of The Martian, culminating in a big budget Hollywood blockbuster helmed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon, expectations have run high for each new Andy Weir book. His sophomore effort, Artemis, was a change of pace, a science fiction thriller set inside a city on the Moon. Project Hail Mary uses a broader canvas as the backdrop for an interstellar race against time, but it still cleaves to Weir’s favorite themes: competence in the face of adversity, and a willingness to fight for survival. One key difference is that the stakes are higher in Project Hail Mary: rather than one life being at risk, Weir’s antagonist in this book threatens the survival of the entire human race, and other galactic civilizations beside our own.

Andy Weir is all about survival. His first novel, The Martian, centers upon the attempts of astronaut Mark Watney to survive long enough on the Red Planet for a rescue mission to reach him. His sophomore book, Artemis, is a fast-paced survival story of a different kind, set among various criminal factions on the Moon. His latest novel, Project Hail Mary, raises the stakes even higher— it’s about the survival of our entire species, and all life on Earth.
In Project Hail Mary, the Sun is getting dimmer, thanks to a mysterious substance known as Astrophage, a type of interstellar infection. Humanity is facing a ticking ecological time bomb; unless the secret of the Astrophage can be discovered and the planet-wide cooling process reversed, it’s goodnight for life as we know it.
