It used to be all about the trailers and the broadcast fall schedules. Now those are largely a thing of the past as the media sector’s upfront presentations to Madison Avenue ad buyers continue to evolve.
Following a week of spin and hard sales, here are eight central takeaways after Netflix, Amazon, NBCUniversal, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, YouTube and Fox made their pitches.
1. The Streaming Giants Came to Play Reese Witherspoon attends as Amazon debuts Inaugural Upfront Presentation at Pier 36 on May 14, 2024 in New York City.
This year was the first time that Netflix and Amazon had physical events in New York during upfronts week (YouTube is now in year three), and they clearly tried to make an impression, gunning for a piece of the $20 billion or so in upfront commitments that used to go exclusively to traditional entertainment companies. If there has been a consistent message from YouTube over the past couple of years, it has been built around its vast ecosystem of creators. More recently, that has been joined by artificial intelligence, with the Google-owned video platform rolling out generative AI tools for creators, and for advertising partners.
So it is no shock that creators and AI were two hot topics of conversation at YouTube’s annual Brandcast upfront event Wednesday evening.
And while there were plenty of other surprises (performances from Billie Eilish and Finneas, and K-pop stars Stray Kids; a deal to stream WNBA games on YouTube TV; and a surprise appearance from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell), the creators, as usual, were the focus of the show.

YouTube’s message to Madison Avenue: The video giant isn’t like traditional TV — it’s bigger, with literally billions of viewers, and better at targeting relevant audiences.
At its annual Brandcast event, held Wednesday during the TV biz’s upfronts week, YouTube drilled home massive scale. On average, viewers watch more than 1 billion hours of content on TV screens daily. According to Nielsen’s total TV and streaming report for the U.S., YouTube has had the No. 1 share in streaming watch-time every month on American TVs since February 2023.
“We’re redefining what TV looks like, helping creators reach new heights and using AI to expand creativity,” said YouTube CEO Neal Mohan (pictured above), kicking off the evening’s event Wednesday.

On May 7, many elite, A-list celebrities descended on the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for the annual Met Gala, the star-studded fashion extravaganza and most important red carpet (this year, green and white) event of the year. Online coverage of the glitzy affair always blankets media coverage as fans pore over each gown’s details.
But this year, dozens of pro-Palestine protesters were arrested a block away while marching toward the event. And for those closely watching the ongoing Israel-Hamas war and Gaza’s harrowing devastation — as the death toll topped 35,000 (many of which are women and children) — the Met affair led some online critics to launch the #Blockout2024 movement, which this week is gaining traction.

Some people like to sip the tea, but YouTube is sipping the pickle juice. The video platform has launched In A Pickle, a dishy interview series in which creators have two choices: Share your secrets or end up with a sour taste in your mouth.
In A Pickle will go live via the official YouTube Blog, where the first episode of the series is now live. The show’s format is reminiscent of the hit series Hot Ones, in that it pairs pointed interrogation with extreme food challenges. Instead of eating increasingly hot wings, the guest creators on In A Pickle respond to a set of questions. For each question they skip, they must down a shot of pickle juice.
That doesn’t sound like much of a punishment to me, but inaugural guest Haley Kalil has her own opinions. The model, funnywoman, and professional troll answered almost all of...

Starting in the fall, YouTube will become the official home of the NFL Sunday Ticket. In order to build hype for a package that will cost it a reported $2 billion per year, the leading video platform is sending a whole convoy of creators to the NFL Draft. Beginning on April 27, personalities like Jesser, Ryan Trahan, and Lisa Nguyen will be on the ground in Kansas City, where they’ll report live as the top football amateurs join professional teams.
The NFL previously announced a partnership with creator groups Amp and RDCWorld, who will contest a flag football game during the third day of the draft. But that won’t be the only influencer-led spectacle that will take place in K.C. during the biggest weekend of the NFL offseason. In fact, the collabs between creators and football stars began before the first pick was announced and will continue throughout all seven rounds.
