David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

The nominees for the 2024 Writers Guild of America Awards are finally here.
The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and Writers Guild of America East (Wgae) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in screenwriting, television, new media, news, radio/audio, and promotional writing for 2023.
Oscar-nominated screenplays for “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “May December,” “Past Lives,” “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Oppenheimer” were expected WGA nominations. However, surprise nods for “Air,” “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” and “Nyad” prove the WGA Awards still have a few tricks up their sleeve. If you’re wondering, “Poor Things” was not eligible because it wasn’t produced under a WGA contract, per a source close to the project.
Despite now taking place one month after the Academy Awards, the WGA nominations still carry weight this season — and could be a deciding factor for final Oscar voting. As IndieWire’s Anne Thompson predicted,...

Much of the attention during this week’s virtual Democratic National Convention will be focused on primetime speeches and the moment when Joe Biden and Kamala Harris accept their party nomination.
But Biden’s campaign has lined up a series of fundraisers throughout the week, hoping to draw on the attention and the loss of a traditional convention, which is usually a prime opportunity to gather and woo party donors.
Biden on Monday was holding a virtual fundraiser with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, with a performance by Carole King, and his campaign is planning a series of events throughout this week.
On Tuesday, Biden and Tom Hanks are scheduled to appear at an afternoon event, according to an invite sent to supporters, as part of what is described as “Grassroots Fest,” or fundraisers geared to low-dollar donors. Also in the lineup is an event on Thursday featuring James Taylor and Harris’ husband,...

Richard Schiff doesn’t watch medical shows. Which makes his decision to take The Good Doctor—one of the year’s most robust hits, soon approaching its second season shoot—rather surprising. But creator David Shore jonesed for Schiff to author Dr. Aaron Glassman, the hospital administrator and mentor to the surgeon with autism Dr. Shaun Murphy (played by series lead Freddie Highmore). “I’d never seen [Shore’s show] House, because I don’t watch doctor shows,” Schiff explains. “I remember calling my friend Eli Attie, who used to be a writer/producer on The West Wing, who had worked with David on House for a few years. So I called Eli, and I said, ‘What can you tell me about working with David?’ And he said, ‘David’s a fantastic guy. A real upstanding human, and really fun and really great to work with. By the way, they really, really love you for this.

A speechwriter for Us President Barack Obama is quitting the White House to move to Hollywood and take up TV comedies, the Washington Post said Friday..It.s always been a dream of mine to write comedy and be creative,. 29-year-old Jon Lovett told the Post. .I would like to be able to write in my own voice..Lovett said his departure was not connected with the current shakeup in the Us administration ahead of the 2012 presidential elections.Lovett wrote a great deal of speeches for Obama, including the ones on the financial reform. The newspaper said Lovett was one of the most talented and wittiest people on the presidential team. But the Post added that very few Washington officials had successful Hollywood careers. One of the lucky ones is Eli Attie, a former chief speechwriter for Vice President Al Gore who became a well selling writer and scriptwriter for the Doctor House series.

HBO has taken a major step forward in launching a series by Aaron Sorkin that chronicles the backstage drama at a cable news network.
The pay cabler has officially given a pilot order to Sorkin’s project, which could mark the much-anticipated return of The Social Network scribe to the small screen. To prepare, Sorkin spent time on Keith Olbermann’s set while penning the behind-the-scenes script (think Sports Night meets Countdown), something he did while juggling The Social Network and working on an early draft of the upcoming film Moneyball (starring Brad Pitt).

Now that Keith Olbermann is leaving MSNBC, could he be setting his sights on Hollywood and Aaron Sorkin’s next TV project? The Golden Globe-winning scribe behind The Social Network has long had a pilot script in the works about a cable news show, and Olbermann could be tapped to contribute rants, says a source familiar with the project.

For the fourth consecutive year Hollywood has selected its Black List, a compilation of the top unproduced screenplays for 2009. Over 300 film professionals were asked to submit the titles of up to ten of their favorite screenplays. The only condition for the picks were that the projects would not be released in theaters this year. That means some of the Black List honorees may be in the process of being turned into movies but by far the majority remain thoughts on digital ink, a blueprint for grand dramatic ideas, high-reaching adventure and controversial ideas waiting to be burned to light.
For a screenplay to have made it onto the Black List it must have received at least five votes for it. Some scripts have five votes while the top-rated screenplay received 47 votes. That doesn't mean that the script with the most votes is the best screenplay of the year; it means...
