[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 17 Episodes 1 “Gold Star” and 2 “Contagion.”] The Bau has a new UnSub to track down in Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 17, and the really bad news is they have to work with a previous one, serial killer Elias Voit (Zach Gilford), to do it. But maybe, just maybe, the profilers can use this to their advantage. After all, if they can find Gold Star without Voit’s help, the deal he made with the FBI director (Clark Gregg) is null and void, and if they can get him to confess to a crime that proves he’s Sicarius, even better! That’s easier said than done, especially as he manages to get under at least one profiler’s skin. Plus, after the events of Season 16, Rossi (Joe Mantegna) is hallucinating his own version of Voit. Below, the cast and showrunner Erica Messer ...

Paramount+ is keeping Criminal Minds: Evolution on the case for another season.
The streamer has ordered a third season of the drama, a continuation of CBS’ long-running Criminal Minds that features much of the original show’s cast and is headed by longtime showrunner Erica Messer. The renewal comes a day before Evolution’s second season premiere.
The show’s second season (and 17th in the main Criminal Minds franchise) begins shortly after the events of the season one finale (though in the real world, it’s been 16 months since it last aired), with the Bau team investigating what (or who) the mysterious Gold Star is. “As the conspiracy unfolds,” the season two logline reads, “the Bau is met with an unexpected complication when serial killer Elias Voit (Zach Gilford) negotiates a deal that transfers him to federal custody in the Bau’s own backyard. The Bau is back in action, but one familiar member of the team is still Mia. Matthew Gray Gubler, who played Dr. Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds for 15 seasons, won’t appear in season 2 of Criminal Minds: Evolution, which premieres June 6 on Paramount+.

Criminal Minds wrapped up its decade-plus run on CBS in early 2020. But in 2022, the show was rebooted for a 16th season, dubbed Criminal Minds: Evolution. The 10-episode, streaming-only season featured the team – including David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster), and Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) – working a complex case involving a serial killer named Elias Voit (Zach Gilford).
While Criminal Minds: Evolution brought back most of the show’s core cast, a few familiar faces were missing.

When Criminal Minds: Evolution returns for Season 17, it will be doing so without one of its long-time recurring stars. In January, Josh Stewart, who has recurred since debuting in the original run’s second season, wrote on social media that his “days of playing Will Lamontagne Jr. are over.” But how will the show address the absence of JJ’s (A.J. Cook) husband, especially considering how much we saw of them at home together in the first season of the revival? TV Insider asked showrunner Erica Messer just that. “Yeah, we really enjoyed that run last season and then this season again, because it’s only two weeks from last season and it’s sort of a bullet train of a year, we know that he’s on an assignment, just like there’s always another case, just like we always have another case,” Messer explains. “So we’re not...

Looking back at the beginnings of many procedural dramas, viewers long for the sense of nostalgia that the early seasons bring. Whether it is the more dynamic writing or the original cast, half of which is now gone, fans of any show that crosses the 10-season mark find themselves returning to the earlier episodes.
With CBS' original hit Criminal Minds now in its 17th year, viewers are more prone to nostalgia than ever. The good news is that the writers have embraced this trend and made some choices that are likely to be very reminiscent of the beginning of the drama.
When Will Criminal Minds Season 17 Premiere?
Premiering Thursday, June 6, the new season of Criminal Minds will see the staff of the Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau) face another series of crimes. However, the main danger the team faced in the previous season, Elias Voit, will continue to terrorize them even though he's been caught.

When Criminal Minds continued with Evolution two years after the original run ended after 15 seasons, it did so with nearly every actor from the series finale: Joe Mantegna (David Rossi), A.J. Cook (Jennifer “J.J.” Jareau), Kirsten Vangsness (Penelope Garcia), Aisha Tyler (Dr. Tara Lewis), Adam Rodriguez (Luke Alvez), and Paget Brewster (Emily Prentiss). Scheduling didn’t work for Matthew Gray Gubler and Daniel Henney to reprise their roles as Dr. Spencer Reid and Matt Simmons. But will that change in Season 17? There has been at least one sign pointing to a possible return from Gubler: a photo of Spencer Reid’s nameplate on a desk in a photo shared on Mantegna’s Instagram story (see below). So TV Insider turned to showrunner Erica Messer for answers. As it turns out, unfortunately, we will not be seeing Gubler this season. Joe Mantegna/Instagram “It never worked out for Season 16 and...

Criminal Minds continues to be a large presence in television with its current revival show Evolution. Its most recent season took major inspiration from a single question that created a frightening scenario.

Criminal Minds as most fans knew it reached its conclusion on February 19, 2020. It ended its run with 10 episodes, which had been one of the least number of episodes the show aired since its inception. Ironically, the popular police procedural would end after Covid-19 became a massive threat to the world. What fans perhaps didn’t predict was how much the pandemic would impact the series’ 16th season.
Series showrunner Erica Messer confided to Deadline that it wasn’t too long after Criminal Minds ended that she was asked to bring the show back.

Never say never. While Matthew Gray Gubler did not reprise his role as fan-favorite character Spencer Reid in the 2022 series Criminal Minds: Evolution, he’s not ruling out revisiting the role in the future, he recently said.
Matthew Gray Gubler says he’d be ‘honored’ to appear in ‘Criminal Mind: Evolution’
Last year, the Bau returned to TV in the Paramount+ series Criminal Minds: Evolution. While Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness), Rossi (Joe Mantegna), and other characters were all there to track down serial killer Elias Voit (Zach Gilford), Reid was noticeably absent from the team. The show explained his absence by saying he was on a special assignment. That left the door open for Gubler to appear in future episodes. And it sounds like he’s game to do so.
“Of course! I would be honored. I would absolutely love that,” the actor recently told The Six O’Clock Show (via...

When writer Liz Tigelaar isn’t on set, in her Fox lot bungalow office or at the Venice home she shares with her wife, their 7-year-old son and two French bulldogs, she occasionally relaxes at (and, yes, works from) one of the tonier trailer parks on the planet: Malibu’s Paradise Cove. That’s where she’s shared a petite beach house with longtime friend and fellow TV producer Erica Messer (Criminal Minds) and her family for the past decade. “We joke that we remodeled it with the efficiency of two showrunners,” says Tigelaar. “It was just ‘Yep! Yep! Yep!’ … The quickest choices possible.”

Police procedural drama Criminal Minds has captivated fans since its debut in 2005. The cancellation of the original series on CBS in 2020 didn’t stop fans from desperately wishing the show would return, which it did two years later under a new title, Criminal Minds: Evolution.

Cook), Tara Lewis (Aisha Tyler), Luke Alvez (Adam Rodriguez), and Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) worked against the clock to rescue Rossi and to locate the one of the worst serial killers the Bau had ever seen, Elias Voit (Zach Gilford) a.k.a. However, the thrilling finale ended on a cliffhanger, and many fans are already discussing what comes next. One of the big questions we’re left with after episode 10 is, “Who was at the door?” Here’s what that means, and why we think it was none other than the legendary Spencer Reid.

One season of Criminal Minds: Evolution down, at least one more to go. The Bau may have just caught Sicarius (Zach Gilford’s Elias Voit), but they’ll be back for a 17th season, to deal with whatever Gold Star is as well as likely another hybrid of a recurring UnSub and standalone cases. And, as the series did quite well this past season, we’ll continue to see the team’s lives away from hunting down those bad guys. Showrunner Erica Messer teases what’s ahead, including a love triangle, team leader, and more. At the end of the original series’ run, you’d said you’d love to see Prentiss (Paget Brewster) possibly being nominated as the first female director of the FBI in five years’ time. Given the timing, is that something we might see a Season 17, her starting on that path or thinking if she even wants that?...

The police procedural drama, Criminal Minds, which centers around a team of FBI profilers as they study the worst criminals the U.S. has to offer, dominated network television on CBS before it moved to the streaming service Paramount +, under its new name Criminal Minds: Evolution. Criminal Minds’ perfect mix of celebrity guest stars, and the show’s characters having strong chemistry kept fans hooked for 16 seasons.
However, all that success didn’t distract viewers from noticing the vast number of cast changes Criminal Minds has endured over the years. While almost all of the changes came as a shock, the reasoning behind some cast members’ departures differed vastly, with some leaving by force, some due to budget cuts, and others even choosing to leave for the sake of their sanity.

Criminal Minds: Evolution showrunner Erica Messer told TV Insider that “it’s gonna take a real big thing to happen for us to get [the jet] back,” and as the sneak peek Paramount+ has released from the January 12 midseason premiere, that’s exactly what’s happened. Last we saw the Bau, they had a lead on Sicarius (Zach Gilford’s Voit), though they have yet to identify him, and JJ (A.J. Those back at the office — Prentiss (Paget Brewster), Rossi (Joe Mantegna), Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness), Lewis (Aisha Tyler), and even Bailey (Nicholas D’Agosto) — could only watch in horror as they lost the feed from their body cameras. The wait is almost over to find out if JJ (A.J. Cook) and Luke (Adam Rodriguez) survived that explosion in one of Voit’s (Zach Gilford) storage containers in the Criminal Minds: Evolution midseason finale. But that’s not all we have to look forward to in the second half of the drama on Paramount+. When new episodes resume on January 12, in addition to the Bau starting to get some wins, expect developments in Lewis’ (Aisha Tyler) relationship with Rebecca (Nicole Pacent), a set-up for another season, and much more. Showrunner Erica Messer offers a preview. I love Lewis and Rebecca together. But I know this show, I know what happens when people are in relationships, so I am worried for Rebecca. Sadly, we don’t have a say.” But how much will we hear about those assignments? “I can’t talk too much about it,” showrunner Erica Messer recently told TV Insider. “We won’t hear a ton more about what they’re up to this year, but it’ll come into play next...

A.J. And those episodes are going to lead to a “crazy” end to the season, Adam Rodriguez (Luke Alvez) promised TV Insider. “I think [Erica Messer and the writing team] were so excited to finally get a chance to do something that was truly serialized and still have the genius to keep it so that each episode in its own way could stand alone but it is all tied to this long arc, which wraps up in a pretty crazy way — so crazy that I would say it may not be the end of the road,” he teased. We got a little breather from Elias on Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 1 Episode 4, but that doesn't mean we got relief from violence and bloodshed.
As the Bau seeks answers about who Sicarius is and how to stop him, they're eager to link cases with any similarities.
Unfortunately, there is no shortage of troubled minds out there just waiting to inflict pain on others.
It's always boggled my mind that so much violence is rooted in similar trauma.
Gale and Jude were victims of a horrible crime when they were younger, and the only way they knew to address it was to inflict similar pain on others.
I've not spent any time understanding the whys behind that behavior, as it's so foreign to me that I prefer to live in a bubble where it doesn't exist.

So far, the profilers know that they’re dealing with a network and they’re working on narrowing down who they might be looking for based on the kill kits still out there. They also might have some found help in the latest UnSub — who actually infiltrated the network because his sister went missing 15 years ago and he has his eye on Sicarius, they discovered in “Moose.” But these killers aren’t their only problem: Deputy Director Bailey (Nicholas D’Agosto) wants to shut down the Bau and has now removed David Rossi (Joe Mantegna) as team leader; fortunately, Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster), as section chief, was able to appoint herself as his replacement.

We had the chance to jump on the phone with Criminal Minds: Evolution creator and executive producer Erica Messer to discuss the disturbing events of Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 1 Episode 4.
Erica talked about bringing the series to the streaming market after 15 seasons and teased that Moose's story isn't finished and will not end well.
Please enjoy our conversation below.
Oh my gosh. I have to tell you, Erica, I watch a lot of TV, but I have never been as disturbed as I was over Moose's tragic ark.
Oh right.
I'm the person who never wants an animal to be killed.
I know.
But in this case, I would've preferred it. I really would. I mean, it breaks my heart that you took a cuddly bear of a dog like Moose to show and have Elias pretty much destroy everything that he was to show what kind of a monster Elias is.

Criminal Minds: Evolution – Kirsten Vangsness as Penelope Garcia in “Criminal Minds: Evolution” streaming on Paramount+, 2022. Photo Credit: Michael Yarish /Paramount+ When the 15th season of Criminal Minds ended in 2020, Kirsten Vangsness felt pretty certain that would be the end of the show — after all, she’d co-written the finale with show-runner Erica Messer. Yet, here she is, and here the show is, back again for a new 10-episode run as Criminal Minds: Evolution, which picks up after the finale with many of the final season’s cast members returning. Vangsness told us that, after all of the emotion of saying goodbye to everyone nearly three years ago, she couldn’t believe her good fortune when Messer told everyone she’d come up with a new idea to continue the show. Spoiler Alert: This story contains plot points from the premiere of Criminal Minds: Evolution on Paramount+.
Executive Producer Erica Messer never did get much of an explanation as to why CBS in 2019 canceled Criminal Minds, its long-running crime procedural that became appointment viewing for millions. “None of us wanted it to end creatively,” she tells Deadline. “We felt there were plenty more stories to tell. The cast was in such a groove and everybody loved being here.”
So when she was asked in the summer of 2020 to bring the show back, Messer wasn’t too worried about whether she could reassemble the Bau. “It all lined up and worked out,” she recalls. “We had four months to shoot 10 episodes and I felt pretty confident we could gather our troops for that.”

The ultimate victor in the streaming wars has been the audience, which now enjoys the spoils of a content-starved environment in which death is never final, and any familiar TV franchise has a good shot at being resurrected. For proof, as if any more is needed, look to the motley crew of psychopath hunters from the long-running procedural “Criminal Minds,” now back in action on Paramount+ less than three years after CBS took them off the case.
But this is not quite the show viewers watched for 324 episodes. This is “Criminal Minds: Evolution,” a 10-episode-long soft reboot clearly intended to push the franchise into a more mature territory with deliberate pacing and a renewed focus on the profilers solving the murders, rather than the perpetrators committing them. It’s a logical progression for the show, which for all its success on CBS, always felt a bit too dark for the network,...
