Documentary captures in lurid detail the chaos as thousands of ticketless fans forced their way into Wembley stadium to watch England v Italy
More than Bukayo Saka’s deciding penalty miss, the final of Euro 2020 between England and Italy will be remembered primarily for the chaos seen around Wembley stadium before and during the game. Thousands of ticketless fans forced their way – or “jibbed” – into the ground, in the process causing criminal damage and injury to stewards, other fans and themselves. It was one of the highest-profile scenes of crowd disorder since the bad old days of 80s hooliganism, only this time captured in lurid detail on camera phones and by 24-hour rolling news.
That footage – fans stuffing flares up their backsides, hordes descending on the Wembley turnstiles like a deleted scene from the Battle of Helm’s Deep – has proved to be catnip for Netflix, which uses it as...

At 85 minutes, Sheffield United’s Jaydon Bogle leveled the score with a forceful shot from City’s right flank, making it 1-1.
However, in the 89th minute, Rodri secured City’s win with a decisive left-footed strike.
In other matches, Liverpool, despite being a man down after Virgil Van Dijk’s red card, clinched a thrilling 2-1 victory against Newcastle.

London, Aug 14 (Ians) Chelsea and Liverpool played to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge in an intriguing Premier League opener.
With Mauricio Pochettino making his Chelsea managerial debut and new additions to their squad, the Blues started slowly. Liverpool asserted dominance early, with a rejuvenated Luis Diaz capitalising on Mohamed Salah’s precise cross from the right, reports Xinhua.
Chelsea gradually found their rhythm and equalized when Axel Disasi capitalized on questionable defending, netting a goal in the 37th minute. A potentially goal-bound effort from Ben Chilwell was later deemed offside. Both teams showed glimpses of brilliance, but their performances hinted at the need for more reinforcements before the transfer window closes.
While Brentford and Tottenham both missed key forwards, the teams showcased an exhilarating 2-2 draw, with all goals recorded in the first half. Tottenham’s new coach Ange Postecoglou watched his side go ahead in the 11th minute,...

Competition was high at the Metlife Stadium this week, as a fight between soccer fans broke out during a match between Arsenal and Manchester United.
It’s unknown what or who began the fight but videos circulating online show numerous people getting into physical altercations with one another.
One video shows what looks to be a Manchester United fan pummeling a man down as a third man grabs the punch-thrower from behind and tries to hold him back by biting his left ear. A fourth man joins in on the fight and begins punching the first man before he is pushed off to the side, starting a new fight with someone else. Though that may seem a lot, that was only the first 15 seconds of the nearly two-minute video.

London, May 27 (Ians) Erling Haaland was named the Premier League’s Player of the Season on Saturday, after a record-breaking debut campaign in which he helped Manchester City claim their third straight league title.
The 22-year-old scored 36 goals in 35 games this season, breaking the previous record of 34 for a single Premier League season set by Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer in 42-match Premier League campaigns.
Only Dixie Dean, for Everton in 1927/28, has scored more goals across all competitions (63) in a top-flight English season than Haaland’s 52.
The Norwegian is also the first player in the Premier League to score hat-tricks in three successive home matches, and the first Man City player to score a Manchester derby hat-trick since 1970.
Haaland becomes the third successive Man City player, and fourth overall, to claim the accolade, after Kevin De Bruyne in 2019-20 and 2021-22, while Ruben Dias took the honour in 2020-21. Vincent Kompany was the first,...

This post contains spoilers for "Ted Lasso" season 3, episode 7 "The Strings That Bind Us."
One of the most happy-go-lucky characters on "Ted Lasso" is Sam Obisanya, the AFC Richmond midfielder and Nigerian restaurant owner played by Toheeb Jimoh ("The Power"). Even when a billionaire calls him a "medium talent" and curses him out to his face, Sam is able to take it in stride. However, in "The Strings That Bind Us," Sam's unflappable, cheery demeanor finally cracks when he finds himself and his restaurant on the receiving end of racism and vandalism. It all starts when he gives some polite pushback on social media to the British Home Secretary's anti-refugee stance. Sam is promptly shouted down and told to "Shut up and dribble," a message that vandals graffiti inside his restaurant, too.
In the locker room, Sam explodes at the world's evils, and it's the first time we've really seen...

London, March 17 (Ians) England coach Gareth Southgate has made several changes to his squad for their Euro 2024 qualifying matches against Italy and Ukraine later this month.
Brentford striker Ivan Toney is rewarded for an excellent season that has seen him score 17 goals, while Chelsea full backs Ben Chilwell and Reece James are also included after having missed out on last year’s FIFA World Cup due to injury.
However, there is no place for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Coady, Ben White or Callum Wilson, who were all present at the World Cup, while Raheem Sterling misses out through injury, a Xinhua report said.
Toney’s inclusion comes despite facing charges of breaching rules on betting, which could lead to him receiving a lengthy ban, but Southgate backed the powerful striker.

Doha (Qatar), Dec 11 (Ians) Another England World Cup dream dies in the quarterfinals meaning they carry on the ‘tradition’ of never making it past the last-eight outside of Europe.
England have now fallen in the quarterfinals seven times (more than any other country) with Qatar 2022 joining Germany 2006, South Korea and Japan 2002, Mexico 1986, Spain 1982 (which had a different competition format), Mexico 1970 and Chile 1962.
What makes this year’s exit tough to take for England fans is that it came in what was arguably the best match of the tournament to date. A match between two top sides, after a performance that probably deserved better and after seeing captain and striker, Harry Kane fire a penalty, that would have leveled the score at 2-2, high into the night sky of the Al Bayt Stadium.
Such an uncharacteristic miss for the player who 30 minutes earlier had equaled Wayne Rooney’s record of 53 goals in an England shirt.

England provided a wonderful fightback but missed a crucial chance to take the game into extra time as Harry Kane missed a penalty at fag end of the match.
In the end, Les Bleus’s ability to produce a moment of brilliance out of thin air was the difference and are the first reigning champion to reach the World Cup semi-finals since Brazil in 1998.
England now head back home, but they should do so with their heads held high, having pushed the current world champions the distance in this gripping encounter.
It was a largely equally matched first half, but England began the second with renewed vigour.
England midfielder Jordan Henderson said they gave everything in the match.
"It’s difficult to find the right words. I thought we gave everything. (We were) disappointed to go one-nil down. I thought (our) character to keep going and find an equaliser was good.

Doha (Qatar), Dec 5 (Ians) England midfielder Bukayo Saka backed the experience in the squad to be a big factor when England face France in the World Cup quarterfinal on Saturday.
Although only 21 years old, Saka formed part of the side that got to the final of last summer’s European Championship, as did most of his teammates and he believes that although the European adventure ended in disappointment, it would help on Saturday.
“There’s a lot of tournament experience now. If you look at the results from the last few tournaments we’ve been in, we’ve got to a semifinal, a final and (now) a quarterfinal.
“So when the big games come, we have a lot of players who know what they need to do,” he said.

On Sunday at the Al Bayt Stadium, Gareth Southgate’s side went into the half time break leading 2-0, opening the scoring in the 38th minute and adding a second in injury stoppage time of the opening session.
England netted a third one 13 minutes into the second half to take the game away from Aliou Cisse’s side and set up a quarter-final clash with France, which earlier on Sunday defeated Poland 3-1.
England and France have met twice before at the World Cup, both in group games which England won 2-0 en route to the 1966 title and 3-1 in 1982 and thus France will be looking for a positive result when the two meet on Sunday December 10 at Al Bayt Stadium.

Doha (Qatar), Dec 3 (Ians) England face Senegal in the FIFA World Cup last 16 on Sunday in Al Bayt, around 50 kilometers from Doha.
Gareth Southgate’s men will go into the match as favourites after scoring nine goals in the group stage.
So far, when England have been good in this World Cup, they have been very good indeed, with a midfield and attack moving the ball at pace and exploiting the speed and mobility of Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Mason Mount, Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford.
However, the USA showed that with tight, energetic marking, they can be stopped, reducing their play to sterile horizontal passing across the back.
Foden and Rashford came into the side against Wales and impressed, with Rashford scoring twice and Foden also finding the target, as well as adding creativity. Southgate now has to decide whether to stick with the duo or bring back Mount and Saka.

Doha (Qatar), Dec 2 (Ians) England defender Harry Maguire believes that taking advantage of set pieces could be vital as his side looks to progress in the World Cup 2022.
England meet Senegal in the last 16 on Sunday after topping Group B with a 6-2 win against Iran, a 3-0 defeat of Wales and a 0-0 draw against the USA.
Marcus Rashford opened the scoring against Wales with a thundering free-kick, while England’s second goal against Iran came when Maguire nodded down a corner for Bukayo Saka to fire home.
The big defender was unlucky not to open the scoring in the same game with a header from a corner that hit the woodwork, while England’s best chance against the USA saw Harry Kane nod just wide from another set piece.
“We’ve got a really good record from set plays,” Maguire told the Football Association.

Doha, Nov 22 (Ians) England coach Gareth Southgate admitted he was a happy man after his side kicked off their World Cup campaign with a 6-2 win against Iran on Monday, but he also insisted they would have to improve if they want to go all of the way in the competition.
England produced an impressive display, full of pace and movement and were rewarded by two goals from Bukayo Saka, along with efforts from Jude Bellingham, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish.
“To win by that margin, to play as we did for the majority of the game, we’ve got to be really happy. We looked ready,” said Southgate after the game, reports Xinhua.

There is no doubt the Three Lions have one of the best squads in international football, with excellent players — Harry Kane, Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Jack Grealish, Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford — in every position.
The side led by Kane (29) has all the necessary ingredients to beat all the teams but it will be interesting to see how coach Gareth Southgate utilises these assets in the tournament. The skipper feels England need to believe that they can win that coveted trophy in the Middle East.
"We have to believe we can win it. I look back at England 10, 15 years ago and it was almost [like] we were scared to say we wanted to win it. I think one of the big shifts that we’ve made over the last four or five years with Gareth is not being afraid to say that," Kane told Sky Sports.

London, Nov 10 (Ians) Coach Gareth Southgate on Thursday announced a 26-man England squad for the 2022 football World Cup, including Leicester midfielder James Maddison along with Newcastle striker Callum Wilson.
Both the players have not played for England since 2019, but recent club form has seen them earn a call-up for the FIFA World Cup which begins on November 20 in Qatar.
On including Maddison in the team, Southgate said, “He is playing really well. We think he can give us something slightly different to the attacking players that we’ve got. He’s playing as good as any of the attacking players in this country. He is a little bit different from the others. I think we need that.”
Maddison last played for England in November 2019 while 2020 Wilson’s last international cap came a month before in October 2019.

London, Oct 17 (Ians) Mohamed Salah’s excellent goal gave Liverpool a 1-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday evening to decide a bad-tempered match and end City’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season.
Salah controlled a long kick from Alisson before turning Joao Cancelo and slotting the ball past Ederson to decide the game as Liverpool built on Wednesday’s 7-1 win away to Rangers in the Champions League.
City coach Pep Guardiola was left furious when Phil Foden’s strike was ruled out for a previous foul by Erling Haaland, while Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp was sent off after losing his cool when his side didn’t get a free-kick in the closing stages, reports Xinhua.
Liverpool came into the game 13 points behind City following their worst start to a season in 10 years, but their defence improved considerably to take vital points that just about keep their title hopes alive.

London, Oct 10 (Ians) Liverpool fought back twice from a goal down but Arsenal rode on a brace by Bukayo Saka to emerge a 3-2 winner in the Premier League and rose back to the top of the table here on Sunday.
Gabriel Martinelli fired the Gunners ahead in the opening minute, and it set the tone for a pulsating encounter.
However, Liverpool struck back through Darwin Nunez midway through the half, but deep into first-half injury-time Bukayo Saka restored Arsenal’s lead after a rapid counter-attack. The teams went in for the breather with Arsenal leading 2-1 at the Emirates.
Liverpool again got back on level terms through frequent nemesis Roberto Firmino, but Saka netted from the penalty spot after Gabriel Jesus was fouled to ensure a huge three points, and send the Gunners back to the Premier League summit.
There were just 58 seconds on the clock when Arsenal broke through.

Paris, Sep 27 (Ians) England’s three-goal fightback from two goals down didn’t earn them a home victory against Germany on Monday, as Kai Havertz’s late goal, also his second in the game, saw the rollercoaster clash end in a 3-3 draw.
Thus, England finished their Nations League group matches with a six-game winless run, sitting at the bottom of the group, which also featured Italy and Hungary.
European champions Italy, who have failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, regained some pride as they won 2-0 in the battle for top spot in Budapest against Hungary, securing a place in the semifinals of the tournament, reports Xinhua. Giacomo Raspadori and Federico Dimarco scored for the Azzurri.

London, Sep 15 (Ians) England coach Gareth Southgate has called Brentford striker Ivan Toney into his squad for the forthcoming UEFA Nations League games against Italy and Germany.
However, there is no place for Manchester United duo of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho just two months away from the start of the World Cup.
Southgate’s final squad before naming players who will go to Qatar is always going to be looked at with extra interest. Although Rashford is suffering from a slight injury, Sancho’s place on the plane must now be in serious doubt, reports Xinhua.
26-year-old Toney gets his chance after scoring 17 Premier League goals and giving six assists in just over a season with Brentford. He is an effective penalty taker and also a threat in the air and set-pieces.

Though he’s become known for sporting colorful shirts at Zoom awards ceremonies, of which the Emmy-nominated “Ted Lasso” star has attended many this year, Jason Sudeikis made waves in a simple black sweatshirt at last week’s “Ted Lasso” premiere. The text read “Jadon & Marcus & Bukayo” in a nod of support for the Black British soccer players Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Bukayo Saka. Sudeikis explained the significance of the shirt during a recent appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
“Well, Jadon, Marcus and Bukayo are three of the English footballers from their national team. Yeah, they’re the last young fellas that took the penalty kicks. They didn’t turn out the way that certainly England would have hoped, certainly a lot of us here in the States would have, too, and people worldwide,” he said, referring to the July 11 Euro 2020 final, which went to Italy.

Prince William has raised his voice loud and clear. Less than a day after Italy won the 2021 European Championship against England, the Duke of Cambridge took to Twitter condemning the "racist abuse" some of England's players were being subjected to. Following England's loss, stars Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, three of the team's Black players who took part in the penalty shootout, received a flood of hateful comments online. "I am sickened by the racist abuse aimed at England players after last night's match. It is totally unacceptable that players have to endure this abhorrent behavior," the father of three said in a tweeted statement....

Italy’s triumph over England in the Euro 2020 final was watched by a peak audience of 31 million viewers in the UK.
That audience high combines both those watching on BBC One (25M) and ITV (6M), and is among the highest ratings in British broadcasting history, according to Barb figures supplied by overnights.tv.
Even without online viewing data, the Euro 2020 final beat top broadcasts in recent history, including the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony (27M peak) and Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s seismic coronavirus lockdown address (28M viewers) in March 2020.
The 31M peak audience came as the match went to penalties, during which England players Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka all suffered the heartache of missing their spot-kicks.
Overall, BBC One’s coverage averaged 17.8M viewers from 6.20Pm to 11.40Pm, while ITV managed 4M viewers from 6.30Pm to just before midnight. Combined, this meant that an average of 82% of...

England’s hopes of capturing its first major soccer championship since the 1966 World Cup were crushed on Sunday as Italy defeated them in the UEFA Euro 2020 finals, which went to a penalty shootout for only the second time in the history of the tournament.
The match opened with the sold-out Wembley Stadium roaring as English midfielder Luke Shaw scored just two minutes into the match, the earliest goal ever scored in the finals of the Euros. But in the second half, Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci scored for Italy off of a corner kick to level the score at 1-1.
The score would stay there through extra time, leading to a penalty shootout that ended 3-2 in favor of Italy. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma secured the victory for Italy by deflecting the final penalty shot from England’s substitute midfielder Bukayo Saka.

Exclusive: The next installment of Amazon Prime Video’s popular sports doc franchise All Or Nothing is set to be filmed at London-based soccer club Arsenal over the 2021-22 season, I can reveal.
The team reported back to training this week – minus those still on international duties such as England’s Bukayo Saka – and are being told about the series as this goes to press. I understand the deal is not 100% finalized but it is likely a formality at this stage.
The cameras will be arriving at Arsenal for a crunch season in the reign of manager Mikel Arteta, with the team coming off the back of a disappointing 2020-21, finishing eighth in the Premier League and exiting the Europa League in the semi-finals. The team did however close the year strongly and could look to pin hopes on Saka, one of the breakout stars of the English national team...

London, May 25 (Ians) Ben White, Ben Godfrey and Aaron Ramsdale received their first England call-ups as Gareth Southgate selected Trent Alexander-Arnold among four right-backs in his provisional European Championship squad.
With the Three Lions dealing with issues such as injuries and European (Champions League) final absentees, the Football Association confirmed a larger provisional squad would be announced on Tuesday rather than the definitive group, Dpa reports.
Southgate has named a 33-man party that will be trimmed down to 26 players on June 1, allowing him to include injury doubts such as Harry Maguire, Jordan Henderson and Kalvin Phillips.
Speaking about his decision to name a 33-member squad, Southgate explained: "I think our situation is more complicated than any other country at the moment.
"We have known for a while that we have of this 33, 12 players still to play in European finals this week so we were always going to need some additional...

London, March 25 (Ians) England striker Marcus Rashford is a major doubt for England's World Cup qualifying opener against San Marino on Thursday, manager Gareth Southgate said.
The 23-year-old Rashford sat out training on Wednesday as he continues his rehabilitation from a foot injury. Southgate said Rashford was struggling to be fit but was more optimistic for Arsenal's Bukayo Saka, Dpa news reports.
"They're doubtful," Southgate said.
"I'd say Marcus more doubtful than Bukayo at the moment but we're going to assess them. Marcus has been very keen to be with us. He obviously wasn't with us so much in the autumn."
Saka, who is still with Arsenal, has been battling a hamstring strain.
England visit Albania on Sunday after the San Marino match and finish their opening triple-header in Group I at home to Poland on March 31.
