When it comes to comics, superheroes are inexplicably linked to monsters. Horror comics existed before the superhero boom launched with Action Comics #1 (1938), and continued going strong after the caped crowd flopped following World War II. When Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Stan Lee launched the Marvel Universe in the early 60s, they did so tentatively, keeping Spider-Man, Hulk, and the Fantastic Four close to the sci-fi and monster comics they made throughout the fifties.
As unlikely as the pairing may seem, superheroes and monsters make for a peanut butter and chocolate combination. Not only do monsters provide the overpowered villains required for superhero fights, as the current Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong demonstrates, but they also give characters like Spider-Man and Batman a chance to show off their heroism in the darkest of times.
So if you’re looking for some spooky superhero stories for your Halloween season, these 13 comics will do the trick.

Ulrich Thomsen, Rasmus Hammerich (“On My Mind”), Ida Marie Nielsen (“Vikings”) and Diêm Camille (“Washington Black”) are set to headline “Ripple,” a graduation film by promising new director Joey Moe and producer Jasmin Jiramani.
Jiramani recently delivered the Star Wars fan film “Shrouded Destiny: A Star Wars Long Tale” starring Lars Mikkelsen, who has also been in the Disney+ Star Wars series “Ahsoka.”
Moe and Jiramani, who are both students of the prestigious Danish film school Super8, said “Ripple” explores why people spend so much time obsessing over macabre true crime tales.
“Ripple” is a psychological thriller inspired by true events that send a ripple effect through half a century of murders,” said the pair.
“Ripple” has already been pre-bought by Scandinavian Film Distribution and will be released across the Nordics in 2024.

Utopia has acquired the North American rights to writer-director Kristoffer Borgli’s cultural satire Sick of Myself.
The nihilistic romantic comedy, which screened at Cannes as part of the Un Certain Regard section, portrays a self-absorbed young woman, played by Kristine Kujath Thorp, making herself sick to attract attention and one-up her artist boyfriend (Eirik Sæther).
Sick of Myself will next play at the 2022 edition of Fantastic Fest.
“I wrote this Norwegian script after I had just moved to the U.S., and even though it’s a story about a very specific Oslo environment, I must have been influenced by my immediate surroundings because the film seems almost more relatable for American audiences,” Borgli said in a statement.
“I’m therefore very excited to partner with Utopia for U.S. distribution, to bring the movie back to where it was written,” the director added.

High profile Danish playwright Christian Lollike spoke to Variety about his feature film debut “The Cake Dynasty” at the Goteborg Festival’s Nordic Film Market. Lollike is presenting the movie in the market’s work-in-progress sidebar.
Represented in international markets by LevelK, the immigration-themed satirical and romantic drama stars Nicolas Bro (“Riders of Justice”) as Neil, a middle-aged factory boss whose family-run cake factory is on the verge of bankruptcy. Deeply depressed, the man embarks on a desperate mission to save the business and starts selling low-calorie sweets, as well as hiring refugees to work in the factory. The seismic changes cause him to open his heart in a new way.
“I’ve wanted to make a sort of a fairy tale about the immigrant situation in Denmark for the last twenty years. In that sense, The film is a reflection on what we call Danish or European values,” says Lollike,...

International sales and aggregation outfit LevelK has picked up darkly funny feature “The Cake Dynasty,” toplining Anders Thomas Jensen regular Nicolas Bro. The feature is adapted from the eponymous stage play by debut director Christian Lollike.
One of Denmark’s most lauded contemporary playwrights and stage directors, Lollike is well-known for his topical and often politically-charged works staged in Europe, Australia and the U.S.
Co-written by Lollike and Sigrid Johannesen, “The Cake Dynasty” turns on debt-ridden cake factory owner Niels Agger whose numerous suicide attempts have failed miserably. His wife Else tries to save the factory by asking her daughter and son-in-law for help. The young business school graduates suggest a comprehensive modernisation of the factory, focusing on trendsetting healthy food. Stressed about these new ideas, Niels instead falls in love with the factory’s new cleaning lady, Zeinab, originally from Iraq.
