Any independent film producer will tell you that the completion date of a film is significantly less important than the release date. Rajshree Ojha's Chaurahen (Crossroads) was completed in 2007 and has been traveling the festival circuit for several years before finally hitting Indian cinema screens this last Friday. The distributor, PVR Director's Rare, also recently released Sudhish Kamath's intimate rom-com, Good Night | Good Morning, which opened to rave reviews and unfortunately little business. Chaurahen seems like it might be destined for a similar fate, though perhaps less critical fanfare for a film with a lot to say and relatively little to grab you.The film charts the paths of three groups of people in three different parts of India over the course of a...

Mumbai: When Rajshree Ojha took up her story of ‘Aisha’ and placed it before Anil Kapoor, little did she know what she was signing up for, she claims.
The director of ‘Aisha’, Ojha has gone on record to say that the final product of the movie as seen onscreen was not her baby, her conceptualization at all. She has reportedly said that her hands were clipped by Anil Kapoor who wanted to boost his daughter Sonam Kapoor’s emerging career and that she was not given entire freedom to direct the movie the way she wanted it to be. The final editing all rested with Anil Kapoor.
‘Aisha’ was supposed to be a multi- layered, multi- dimensional character akin to Jane Austen’s ‘Emma’, as Ojha had envisioned. Where the layers went, she asks in disbelief. This is not my film, she reiterates.

After directing a film that is as commercial and Bollywood as they get, Rajshree Ojha returns to the screen with her film Chaurahen, and this time commercial is anything but what the film looks like. Originally completed in 2007, Chaurahen went on to screen at 11 international film festivals before securing theatrical distribution in India by PVR Cinema and global online distribution by Mela.
Chaurahen (Crossroads), a film directed by Rajshree Ojha, who previously directed Aisha, in addition to two other popular specialty projects, boasts an impressive ensemble cast that includes Soha Ali Khan, Victor Banerjee, veteran Bollywood actress Zeenat Aman, and Kiera Chaplin, granddaughter of the silent film superstar Charlie Chaplin. The film is an adaptation of short stories by celebrated author Nirmal Verma. Ojha describes the three vignettes that comprise Chaurahen as “snippets of collected photographs, bringing together similar disconnected people trying to find their path.”

There aren’t many literary adaptations in Indian cinema these days. So an effort to render Nirmal Verma’s stories on celluloid is a welcome endeavor. However, it is also a tad too ambitious. The stories that are simple yet delve into the complexities of human relationships may appear visually-oriented, but to hold them together cinematically via an engaging narrative demands much more than an adept ensemble cast. This is where Chaurahen disappoints: it limits itself to a high-flown, philosophical montage of scenes where it is difficult to identify with or feel for any of the characters. Because they spent most of their time philosophizing about life instead of behaving like mere mortals with motives. Not to mention, the fact that they...

Mumbai, March 12: After telling the story of a fashionista in her directorial debut "Aisha", director Rajshree Ojha returns to tell human relationship stories with her next venture "Chaurahen". The film is based on four short stories by eminent Hindi litterateur Nirmal Verma and she says that this time she had all the creative freedom.

Kangna Ranaut will have to wait for the Hyderabadi hunk Rana Daggubati to be paired opposite her. Contrary to recent rumour around the two being signed opposite each other in a rom-com titled Kris And Suri, the fact is that none of this is true. This means that after a missed opportunity of being seen together in Dum Maro Dum and in-progress Department, Kangna and Rana would have to wait for another day before something really substantial indeed comes their way. Says a source, "Rana has been totally taken aback with this announcement. He was not even in loop when the news break happened around this new movie. Being new to the Bollywood business, he has no clue how such rumours originate. He certainly wants to work in more Hindi films and also break the jinx of lost pairing with Kangna. However, Kris And Suri doesn't feature in his current plans.

When asked if Indian women filmmakers need government subsidies like in Sweden, eight emerging women directors in a unison replied .No., with an underlying message of .we do fine by ourselves, thank you., at Mami.s 12th Mumbai Film Festival Sunday. There cannot be any more proof of woman power than this, where the nation.s filmmakers have moved away from seeking patronage, to being their own person and damn proud of their identity as filmmakers without being singled out as women.Asked whether women were looked as weak just because they cry, Zoya Aktar replied: .If I.m the director, it.s my party. I will cry if I want to. I will be in all my hormonal glory. I.m not going to be embarrassed by it. As a man, you have chosen to be part of my set, so you handle it, boy..The obvious question of sexism was raised.

New Delhi, Sep 10 – Bollywood, for long considered a male-centric industry, is no more an alien world for women directors – if the success of Anusha Rizvi’s ‘Peepli Live’ and Rajshree Ojha’s ‘Aisha’ is any indication. Women are confidently going behind the camera to call the shots.
‘It is not about being a woman director but about directing your thoughts. Look at me, I didn’t come with anything (in the industry). It was a challenge to prove yourself. But I actually never had any issues. I faced the usual trouble any director would face,’.

The upcoming release of Rajshree Ojha's Aisha -- based on Jane Austen's Emma and starring Sonam Kapoor - will also bring Abhay Deol back to the screen in his first conventionally commercial venture since his debut film, Socha Na Tha. Although the focus of the film's publicity has clearly been on its title character, it provides an opportunity to take a look back at Abhay Deol's film career, to highlight his growth and maturity as an actor - and as a star.
Socha Na Tha(2005)
The Skinny:
Viren (Abhay Deol) and Aditi (Ayesha Takia) are introduced by their very traditional families who are trying to arrange both their marriages. Viren and Aditi, however, want something - someone - different. Viren refuses the match for them, and the two families start a bitter squabble. And Viren and Aditi? Become the best of friends. Who would have imagined that?...

August 7, 2010: On the eve of the release of her film Aisha, Rajshree Ojha, the director of the film, tells Jyothi Venkatesh that if the content of a film is good, the rest will fall in place.
Did you assist any director before you made your debut with Chaurahe?
I confess that till date I havn’t assisted any Indian director. I had been an assistant to Charles Herman-Wurmfeld, who, besides being my mentor, had directed Legally Blonde 2. Jonathan was an independent director, who had also made the film Kissing Jessica Stein.
In what way is filmmaking different in India?
Filmmaking, per se, is the same whether in India or abroad. What I feel is lacking here is the will to respect the director. In filmmaking.

August 6, 2010: The thing about shallow people from the beau monde is that they shouldn’t be played shallowly when brought to the screen.
Sonam Kapoor in a ‘tailor’-made role(where more moolah seems to have been spent on tailoring her chic outfits than on exploring the locations , sound sights scents and , yes, sense of this embarrassing world of excessive self-preening) gets the Jane Austen character right. Quite a leap.

Movie Review: Aisha; Cast: Sonam Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Amrita Puri, Lisa Haydon, Ira Dubey, Cyrus Sahukar and Arunoday Singh; Director: Rajshree Ojha; Rating: **1/2 – A competent effort.
Aisha is based on Jane Austin’s popular novel Emma. Western filmmakers have attempted the big screen versions of Emma before and Rajshree Ojha has come up with a competent if not a fabulous Indianised version of the same with Aisha.
The film narrates the tale of Aisha (Sonam Kapoor) who believes in match-making as a hobby and follows it passionately. When she is done with.
