It’s always interesting to find out where the inspiration for iconic movie characters came from, especially when they’re brought to life in such a way that one can’t help but pay attention to them. Euphegenia Doubtfire, the character that Robin Williams took on in the movie Mrs. Doubtfire, did have a real-life counterpart by the name of Annabella Coutts, and she was a Scottish shopkeeper that actually had the moniker ‘Madame Doubtfire’ hung above her shop. Her husband was Arthur Cyril Doubtfire, who died in WWI. The lady was said to be every bit as eccentric as Williams was, but

At the height of her stardom, Marilyn Monroe took an 18-month hiatus from Hollywood. The screen icon, who would have turned 95 on June 1, was battling ill health, which was linked to her barbiturate dependency and fragile psyche, and she was recovering from a miscarriage. So Monroe turned her back on movies for a time, and sought refuge with Arthur Miller, her playwright husband, holing up in their homes in New York City, Connecticut and Long Island.
In April 1958, Monroe was finally ready to return to the medium that had made her globally famous, with Variety proclaiming “Monroe to Do ‘Hot.'” The Hollywood trade went on to report that after a “two-year absence” Monroe was slated to play “a band singer in the 20s period comedy,” which would be directed by Billy Wilder and was entitled “Some Like It Hot.” Monroe’s two male co-stars had yet to be cast...

When movies work their magic, the screen becomes a kind of mirror, reflecting dimensions of our identities or experience back to us in profound and emotional ways. When the characters aren’t so familiar, it serves as more of a window, offering insight into the lives of those who are different from ourselves. Now imagine how agonizing it can be for those who gaze upon the screen searching for something they can recognize, only to find unflattering, inaccurate and scornful representations staring back.
Transgender audiences know that feeling all too well. For them, cinema can be a cruel mirror. But if the concept of trans identity somehow frustrates or confuses you, it’s likely that you haven’t considered just how significantly television and movies may be to blame. That’s where Sam Feder’s essential, thoroughly engaging documentary “Disclosure” comes in, retracing the ways that gender-nonconforming characters have been...

Jerry Zaks knew he had a busy year ahead when 2020 began. The four-time Tony winner started the yearin rehearsals for Mrs. Doubtfire, which began previews at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on March 9. Of course, plans changed when Broadway shut down on March 13, leaving an unsure future for the musical, as well as Zaks' next project, the fall revival of The Music Man.

Jeremy Dick from MovieWeb is accurate when he states that no one can replace Robin Williams or the work he put in on making Mrs. Doubtfire come to life, but it’s not really surprising that a musical is being made from this idea since it does tend to lend itself to such a project. In fact it tends to sound like a fitting homage to the original movie, much more so than a sequel might have. Apparently there were plans for a sequel to be made shortly before Williams passed away, but without Robin in the picture the idea dwindled
