Producers, studio executives and agents are hoping that when they touch down in Canada this week for the Toronto International Film Festival, things will look a lot like they did in 2019. That was the last time that the annual celebration of all things movies was at full capacity, with star-studded red carpets, packed premieres and the kind of late-night parties and boozy dinners that help grease the wheels for dealmaking. Covid changed all of that, leading to a nearly three-year hiatus for one of the major hubs of film sales and awards season launches. Last year, TIFF returned in-person, but at limited capacity, and most Hollywood players skipped it. But this time, the film industry is returning in force, hoping to sell movies, spot talent and make sense of a landscape that’s been altered by the global pandemic.
“People are a little more risk-averse,” says Mimi Steinbauer, president and CEO of Radiant Films Intl.

Samara Weaving has lined up her latest genre project, and hopefully, it'll be less of a bloodbath than 2019's "Ready Or Not." No, actually, I take that back — Samara Weaving kicked butt in that hilarious horror flick, and it would be great to see her gear up for another fight to the death. Weaving is already set to appear in the upcoming sixth "Scream" movie, which will reunite her with "Ready Or Not" directors Tyler Gillett and Mat Bettinelli-Olpin, so why not double down and put her survivalist skills to the test? While her upcoming film isn't quite ticking the horror box, it certainly veers into very familiar territory by telling the story of a woman just barely evading tense circumstances to survive.
Variety reports that Weaving will take center stage in a new comedic thriller, currently in production in Vancouver. Titled "Borderline," the film follows a "helplessly romantic sociopath...

Genre regular Samara Weaving has a role in Scream 6, which just recently finished filming – and she’s already hard at work on another genre project, the comedic thriller Borderline. Variety reports that Borderline is currently filming in Vancouver, with The Babysitter: Killer Queen writer Jimmy Warden at the helm, making his feature directorial debut.
Warden’s Borderline script, which was once featured on the Black List, centers on
a helplessly romantic sociopath who escapes from a mental institution and invades the home of a ’90s pop superstar. He just wants to be loved; she just wants to survive.
Weaving is joined in the cast by Eric Dane (Euphoria), Ray Nicholson (Something from Tiffany’s), Alba Baptista (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris), and Jimmie Fails (The Last Black Man in San Francisco).

Jeff Goldblum is joining Michael Sheen and Michelle Monaghan in writer-director Peter Glanz’s comedy-drama “The Price of Admission.”
Producers are Neda Armian of Armian Pictures, Alex Foster, and Glanz. Radiant Films International president and CEO Mimi Steinbauer made the announcement on Tuesday.
“The Price of Admission” is in the tradition of “Being John Malkovich” and “Birdman” — a story that’s part dramedy, part existential thriller. Sheen will portray a middling playwright undergoing a midlife crisis whose wife (Monaghan) grows weary of playing second fiddle to his work. But he’s incapable of functioning in reality and submerges himself in an elaborate play about his life. The only person who understands him is his best friend, portrayed by Goldblum, a behavioral psychologist undergoing a midlife crisis of his own.
Radiant Films International is handling foreign rights to the movie, which was presented to buyers at last year’s Cannes Film Market.

There's another Stephen King movie on the way! His novella, The Gingerbread Girl, is the latest story of his to get picked up for a feature film adaptation. The rights to the story were snatched up by Brainstorm Media.

She avoids contact with her husband and her father and channels her grief into a grueling daily running regimen. This is doing her all kinds of good, until one day she makes the mistake of looking into the driveway of a man named Pickering. Pickering also enjoys privacy, but the young women he brings to...

This year’s Afm had no single standout title, but a selection of high-profile projects and star appearances sparked buyer interest.
In an increasingly polarised independent space besieged by a talent exodus to TV and the might of digital platforms and studio acquisitions teams, the consensus was there was no single must-have title at the 2016 American Film Market (Afm). So it was up to a handful of appealing projects and star appearances to inject life into the market.
As Screen International revealed, Sacha Baron Cohen showed up at the Annapurna International offices to talk up his $20-30m Danish comedy remake Klown. Viola Davis trumpeted Gfm Films’ The Personal History Of Rachel DuPree, Margot Robbie met Sierra/Affinity buyers for I, Tonya, and Mark Wahlberg took part in a TWC-Dimension presentation with writer-director Damian Szifron for The Six Billion Dollar Man.

As Tiff 2016 gets underway, two titles are prompting industry buzz.
As the industry descended on Toronto International Film Festival (Sept 8-18), buyer interest heated up around Venice hit Jackie ahead of Sunday’s North American premiere and Netflix reportedly circled a global streaming deal on The Bad Batch [pictured].
Completed films in the festival, such as Pablo Larrain’s English-language debut and Lily Ana Lily Amirpour’s second feature, represent one kind of opportunity for buyers, albeit one that has prompted familiar gripes about a lack of broadly commercial must-haves.
However the late arrival of a handful of enticing packages on the eve of Toronto has quickened pulses for savvy buyers willing to risk early investment on select prospects.
This time last year Paramount pounced on a promo reel for Florence Foster Jenkins and the film has amassed $24m and counting in North America.

This time last year Paramount pounced on a promo reel for Florence Foster Jenkins and the film has amassed $24m and counting in North America.
So all eyes will be on thriller Labyrinth, a Good Universe...
