Thomas Cailley’s supernatural drama “The Animal Kingdom” and Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or winner “Anatomy of a Fall” are leading the race at the 49th Cesar Awards with 12 and 11 nominations, respectively.
Triet’s movie, which just garnered an impressive five Oscar nominations, and “The Animal Kingdom,” which opened at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard and won a prize, will vie for top Cesar awards including best director and film.
“The Animal Kingdom” is an ambitious film that marks a departure from France’s cinema tradition of social realism. It’s both a creature-filled dystopia and a father-and-son drama, weaving some contemporary concerns over the future of mankind. It’s produced by Pierre Guyard at Nord Ouest Films and co-produced by Artemis.

The early autumn slump has been reversed.
France’s box office bounced back in November following a downturn in September and October with 15.1 million ticket sales, a total gross of €108.8m based on an average ticket price of €7.2.
However, admissions were still down 19.6% from the pre-pandemic 2017-2019 average for the month.
It was enough to assure solid annual figures to date with ticket sales hitting upwards of 162.8 million admissions (€1.17bn), above 2022’s full year 152 million admissions but below the 2017-2019 pre-pandemic average of 208 million tickets per year. Estimates suggest 2023 will reach between 180-190 million.

Italian writer-director Emma Dante’s “Misericordia” has won the top prize at the Black Nights Film Festival in Tallinn, Estonia. Adapted from her own play, her third feature tells the story of a young man (Simone Zambelli) with learning difficulties, cared for by a group of sex workers on an island, protecting him from the cruelty of his abusive father. It’s a raw portrait of a marginalized group of people, mixing natural beauty of the locations with the grime of everyday existence.
Zambelli also took the award for best actor, for his role as the man-child at the center of the drama. The best actress prize was shared by Lubna Azabal, who plays a teacher in Jawad Rhalib’s “Amal,” and Kim Higelin, who stars in the controversial French drama “Consent,” directed by Vanessa Filho, as a teenager having an affair with a manipulative and exploitative 50-year-old writer.

“Consent,” an adaptation of Vanessa Springora’s bestselling book which sparked a belated #MeToo moment in France, has lured major distributors while thriving at the local box office and stirring social media buzz.
Represented in international markets by Paris-based outfit Snd, the film marks the sophomore outing of Vanessa Filho whose debut feature “Angel Face” stars Marion Cotillard and played at the Cannes Film Festival.
Inspired by Springora’s real-life story, “Consent” tells the story of a teenage girl who is manipulated and sexually abused by a celebrated writer in his 50s. Exclusive: French-Canadian drama Nelly is set for a U.S. release after Cinema Libre Studio picked up the rights to Anne Émond’s feature film.
The company, hot on the heels of picking up Vanessa Filho-directed and Marion Cotillard-fronted Angel Face, has taken U.S. rights from eOne’s Seville International.
The film, which stars French-Canadian actress and Toronto International Film Festival Rising Star Myléne Mackay (Endorphine), tells the story of Nelly Arcan, a sex worker in Montreal who wrote a semi-autobiographical novel Putain, based on her experiences.
Arcan, who wrote about self-destruction and feminine beauty as obsessive themes in all of her books, was fixated on being an object of desire herself and she killed herself in 2009, four days after submitting the last edits to her fourth book.

Cinema Libre Studio has acquired North American rights to “Angel Face” (Gueule d’Ange), starring Marion Cotillard, Variety has learned exclusively.
The drama marks the first feature-length film for French director Vanessa Filho (“Love Punch”), based on an original screenplay developed by Filho with Alain Dias. The movie was produced by Moana Films’ Marc Missonnier (“Marguerite”) and Carole Lambert (“Free Angela and All Political Prisoners”) via Windy Production with Mars Films co-producing and distributing in France, where it premiered in theaters on May 23.
The pic, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in Un Certain Regard, stars Cotillard as a single mother who lives with her 8-year-old daughter on the French Riviera, where she is more interested in partying and reality TV shows than taking care of her child. The daughter starts to wear makeup and drink alcohol, and the mother suddenly abandons her for a man she has just...

Cannes – I couldn’t tell you if Mother’s Day is celebrated in France, but there is some irony somewhere of having Vanessa Filho’s directorial debut, “Angel Face,” debut at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival the day before it does elsewhere in the world. Despite the best efforts of Marion Cotillard, this is one pointless melodrama about a very delinquent mother, Marlene, and her unbelievably self-reliant daughter Elli (Ayline Aksoy-Etaix).

If you’re going to shoot 80 percent of a film in extreme close-up, strictly training the camera on an actor’s face at the expense of everything around her, you better make damn well sure you give us an interesting character to consider. Marlene, a flailing single mother played by a wobbly, one-note Marion Cotillard, is not an interesting character. She’s Halley from “The Florida Project” minus any sort of humor or humanity, a self-destructive bore who never does anything to deserve our attention. “Angel Face,” by extension, is not an interesting movie. The debut feature from writer-director Vanessa Filho is a trite story about a walking disaster and the daughter caught her in path, the tedious melodrama only finding a heartbeat when it abandons the lead character and searches for change.
Marlene is drunk the first time we meet her — so drunk we can almost smell it on her breath.

Cotillard gives it some tragic welly as the alcoholic antihero of Vanessa Filho’s debut, but this would still be daytime-telly-inspired film-making, no matter how much you’d had to drink
“Everything is going to be fine,” thirty-something Marlene likes to tell her eight-year-old daughter Elli. She says it ahead of her drunken wedding and she says it when the ceremony falls apart and then again after she picks up a guy in a nightclub and airily suggests the kid takes a cab home on her own. She repeats the line like a mantra, as though saying it will make it so and is itself proof of motherly love. But everything in Marlene’s life is a long way from fine. The woman’s heading clean off of the rails and worse, it looks as if Elli may not be too far behind.

Acting is pretending. Great acting is doing it in such a way that audiences forget the artifice and buy into the reality of the character completely. Not many are likely to mistake what Marion Cotillard does in “Angel Face” for great acting, as the glamorous French star gives a performance so phony it feels like a “Saturday Night Live” parody of a white-trash trainwreck, downright pathetic in its attempt to achieve what came so naturally to relative amateur Bria Vinaite in last year’s “The Florida Project.”
Buried under garish makeup and a ton of glitter, this Côte d’Azur project looks suspiciously as if first-time director Vanessa Filho caught Sean Baker’s ebullient unfit-mother movie last year at Cannes and tried to do the same thing, with markedly less convincing results. In France, Cotillard isn’t taken all that seriously to begin with, which won’t help the film’s domestic chances,...

The title character in Angel Face (Gueule d’ange) could be either the thirtysomething, nearly always broke wild child who’s into reckless partying, heavy drinking and careless hook-ups, or her cute-as-a-button eight-year-old daughter, who is also not afraid of a good time — or even a stiff drink. In more ways than one, this good-looking first film from French director Vanessa Filho, set on the sunny French Riviera, recalls last year’s equally sunny-yet-dark The Florida Project as it charts the relationship of an irresponsible mother and her young offspring living on the fringes of society in a haze of intoxicants and irresponsibility.

The #MeToo movement took center stage at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, as Cate Blanchett, Marion Cotillard, Patty Jenkins and other female filmmakers and artists gathered together to agitate for better treatment of women in the movie business.
There were 82 women in total, a reference to the number of female directors who have climbed the steps of the Palais, the festival’s central theater, since Cannes began celebrating celluloid in 1942. In the same period, 1,866 male directors ascended the same stairs, Blanchett said in a statement, as the women linked their arms in solidarity. The Oscar-winning actress and Cannes jury head was flanked by Kristen Stewart, Marion Cotillard, Ava DuVernay, Léa Seydoux, and Salma Hayek.

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.
While the Cannes Film Festival has long struggled to put together a Competition slate that includes more than a fraction of female filmmakers, there are major signs of diverse life throughout the rest of this year’s slate, which includes 20 female filmmakers set to debut new films at the lauded festival. At least said Competition includes a trio of intriguing (and very different-sounding) offerings, including films from both Cannes regulars and a newbie. A regular at the Cannes Film Festival, Marion Cotillard opened the ceremonies last year with Arnaud Desplechin’s excellent Ismael’s Ghosts, and now she’s back this year with a new drama. Angel Face (aka Gueule d’ange) premieres in the Un Certain Regard section followed by a late-May release in France, and now the first trailer has arrived.
The feature debut of Vanessa Filho (who wrote the script alongside Diastème and François Pirot), the drama follows Cotillard as Marlene, a woman who abandons her daughter after a one-night stand and so her daughter fights to get her back. Also starring Alban Lenoir, Amélie Daure, Ayline Etaix, and Stéphane Rideau, see the trailer and poster below.

Yesterday, the 2018 Cannes Film Festival lineup was announced bright and early. As always, it’s a moment in the cinematic year that marks a turning point of sorts. In fact, it really does seem like it positions us to start thinking about what might play on the festival circuit this fall. We’re a ways off, but with Cannes letting loose their news, the mind can tend to wander and start speculating. We already knew that Ron Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars story was a special early addition to the fest, having its premiere there. We also already had been told that Everybody Knows from Asghar Farhadi was the Opener. Now, we know much more. The crop of titles so far seems to have even more of an international flavor than usual. In fact, aside from the previously announced special screening of Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars Story,...

This morning, The line-up for one of the most prestigious films festivals in the festival calendar, Cannes, was revealed by Festival president Pierre Lescure and general delegate Thierry Fremaux.
Notable omissions from the 2000 strong submissions, is the lack of British offerings from the line-up and only a token amount of Us projects. The Cannes snobbery has gone into overdrive for 2018 with a number of shakes up, including the banning non-French theatrical releases from the main competition. This means that Netflix has refused to submit any of its films even though they were eligible to submit to the out of competition category.
The line-up includes the new films from directors such as Jean-Luc Godard, Spike Lee, Wim Wenders, Ron Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars story – which features in the out of competition category – Pawel Pawlikowski, Jafar Panahi, Lee Chang-Dong, David Robert Mitchell, Matteo Garrone and Asghar Farhadi.
