As the Writers Guild enters its second calendar month of a strike, a key alliance in its fight for increased residuals, wages and AI protections has struck a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
In a tentative deal that is poised to be submitted for approval Tuesday to its National Board, the Directors Guild of America spent all day Saturday at the table and reached a tentative agreement with the AMPTP just before midnight Sunday. The three-year agreement sees the 19,000-member guild receive pay and benefits gains, increases in global streaming residuals and protections against the use of artificial intelligence, which sources say was the last sticking point to a deal that came after less than a month of negotiations with the AMPTP. The DGA’s current contract, along with that of SAG-AFTRA, expires June 30. The actors branch currently has members voting to authorize a strike,...

Warrior Nun Season 2 dropped at the beginning of November, and the wait was worth it because the battle of good vs. evil kicked into major high gear!

Good luck finding a sweeter, more innocent film in 2022: “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” is a rapturous adaptation of the classic 1958 novel by Paul Gallico (“The Poseidon Adventure”), in which a kindly person pursues their goals, which are always just slightly out of reach. It’s a formula that’s custom-designed for audience satisfaction, and when it’s done right it’s nothing short of a miracle.
“Mrs. Harris,” directed by Anthony Fabian (“Louder Than Words”), tells the story of Ada Harris (Lesley Manville), a cleaning lady in 1950s London. Her husband went missing in the war, and she’s spent the last decade-and-a-half waiting for him to return, doing difficult jobs for rich people who don’t appreciate her. When word finally arrives of her husband’s fate, Ada Harris realizes it’s time to stop waiting and make her own dreams come true.

Warrior Nun Season 2 is officially in the works at Netflix, allowing Ava and the rest of the Order of the Cruciform Sword to carry on in their increasingly-murky war against demonkind and other deceitful celestials.
Netflix took a more personal approach to its renewal announcement for Warrior Nun by posting a Covid-era-indicative video conference conducted by showrunner Simon Barry and cast members Alba Baptista, Toya Turner, Lorena Andrea, Kristina Tonteri-Young and Olivia Delcan. While seemingly held under the pretense of reflecting on happy memories of the show’s spring 2019 shoot, Barry is shown dropping the renewal news to the bunch in a cheeky, trolling fashion.

Netflix’s newest series is decidedly a hit, with Warrior Nun reportedly returning for at least a second and third season. The show follows the journey of Ava Silva, played by Alba Baptista, a quadriplegic teen who dies and is resurrected by a powerful artifact called a Halo. With it comes a host of powers like the ability to phase through walls and hyper-healing (à la Wolverine), among other things, and the onus of leading a squad of battle-hardened nuns with the sole purpose of keeping the world safe from demons – a responsibility Ava proceeds to run away from for most of the first season.
Although Ava’s destiny as the Halo-bearer is to lead the Order of the Cruciform Sword, she wasn’t meant to receive the Halo in the first place. Early on in the season during an attack, the Halo is placed in her corpse to hide it from the enemy.

When I first saw Warrior Nun pop up in my “coming soon” feed on Netflix, I was intrigued. The synopsis was interesting, the cover art looked cool, and the teaser trailer was fun. I added it to my list and asked to be reminded because it looked so very good, and so very gay.
These days, it’s fashionable for shows to include characters from various marginalized communities. When meaningfully represented, this diversity can not only give visibility to marginalized people who are used to seeing their very real identities reflected in popular media, it gives everyone a lesser-known story and/or perspective to explore. Unfortunately, oftentimes, these attempts at representation feel like ticks on a checklist, rather than meaningful inclusions. Instead of fueling the story and deepening the character, people’s identities—Gay, Latinx, Disabled, etc—are reduced to points on a diversity score card. There’s a fine...

Netflix‘s Space Force launched with a bang at the end of May, immediately propelling itself to the top of the platform’s charts. The show reunites The Office creators Greg Daniels and Steve Carell and parodies the newest branch of the United States Military: the titular Space Force. Space Force has been largely mocked ever since its announcement and the series capitalized on that by depicting it as a plucky underdog of loveable losers pulling together to try and achieve the impossible.

Much of Warrior Nun season one is the prologue of a story that just begins to unfold in the finale. The diabolical cliffhanger leaves us with a brand new set of questions. With the revelation that the angel Adriel is both alive (and not an angel), the Order of the Cruciform Sword will have to reckon with its past and decide its future.
According to Warrior Nun showrunner Simon Barry, the show is prepared to address that future. As he told Den of Geek:

Ever since HBO’s Game of Thrones came to a screeching halt with its poorly-written, self-contradicting final season, fantasy lovers have been looking for a new world to engross themselves in. Some found comfort in the streamer’s spiritual successor series, His Dark Materials. Others have taken to re-exploring Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and others still are hedging their bets on Netflix’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon’s legendary animated show Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Netflix’s Warrior Nun is a loose adaptation of the American manga Warrior Nun Areala. The comic follows the titular Warrior Nun, Sister Shannon Masters, and her friends in The Order of the Cruciform Sword, as they fight the forces of evil. The show is something of a spiritual successor to the comic, which was first published in 1994. It takes the broad premise, a religious sect of nuns and priests that fight evil under the leadership of a superpowered Warrior Nun, and reimagines it for the modern audience. Some characters transition directly from the text, like Shotgun Mary (Toya Turner), while others, like comic lead Sister Shannon, are left behind in favor of new characters created for the show.
On paper, Warrior Nun is ‘Extremely My Shit’. Badass women warriors, magic, demons, lore… And for the most part, the show lives up to its premise,...

After their adaptation of The Witcher surprised a lot of people by becoming the most popular TV show on the planet, Netflix appear to be making a concerted effort to establish themselves as a major player in the realm of fantasy. With Game of Thrones now in the cultural rearview mirror, there’s a gap in the market for someone to step in and take the series’ status as the most talked-about thing in the genre, especially with Geralt’s second run of adventures not due for a while yet.
Netflix have two major new fantasy shows debuting in July, and they couldn’t be more different despite the fact that both are action-heavy graphic novel adaptations with a female lead. While subscribers will have to wait until mid-July to see if Cursed manages to put a fresh spin on the well-worn legend of King Arthur, their time will likely...

Netflix has had a lot of success with comic book adaptations, and their latest, Warrior Nun looks to continue that hot streak. As you would expect from the title, the show centers upon a nun kicking ass as she fights in a war between heaven and hell. The first trailer just dropped and as you can see above, it promises a world of high-octane action, super-powered combat and weird religious imagery.
At the core of the story is Alba Baptista’s Ava, a non-believer who wakes from death to find a holy artefact embedded in her back. This grants her superpowers and binds her to the mysterious Order of the Cruciform Sword. Judging from what we see in the trailer, much of the action will show Ava grappling with her new powers and learning her place in this Biblical war. She’s set to be joined by a group of young and sexy Warrior Nuns,...

Manga fans rejoice! Warrior Nun has been adapted into a new ten-episode series as part of Netflix’s increased science fiction slate. The series is being brought to the small screen by creator and showrunner, Simon Barry, who is known for his breakout hit Canadian time travel series, Continuum, and who recently produced a short-lived, supernatural series for Syfy called Ghost Wars. He is joined on the production side by Terri Hughes Burton of The 100 and Eureka, and Amy Berg of Counterpart fame will be on board as a consulting producer.
The official synopsis reads: “Inspired by the manga novels, Warrior Nun revolves around a 19 year-old woman (Alba Baptista) who wakes up in a morgue with a new lease on life and a divine artifact embedded in her back. She discovers she is now part of an ancient order that has been tasked with fighting demons on Earth, and...

Acquisitions
Super Ltd, Neon’s boutique division, has acquired North American rights to David Darg and Price James’ documentary, “You Cannot Kill David Arquette,” which is an official selection of the 2020 SXSW Film Festival.
Filmed over three years chronicling the journey through Arquette’s life and stint in wrestling, the film had its debut in early March at Arquette’s California home 24 hours after hearing about the SXSW cancellation, surrounded by friends, family and a homemade wrestling ring.
Arquette starred as a wrestling-obsessed fan in the 2000 movie “Ready to Rumble” and was crowned world champion as a marketing stunt, making him the most hated man in professional wrestling as a result. In “You Cannot Kill David Arquette,” Arquette seeks redemption by...
