Anime is bigger than ever. With dedicated streaming services such as Crunchyroll enjoying a meteoric rise, rivals Netflix and Prime Video getting in on the action with their own dedicated selection, and even Disney – the arbiter of western animation – now boasting a growing number of exclusive anime series on Disney+, the availability and popularity of Japanese animation has never been greater.
Yet it's in film where anime has enjoyed the biggest boom, with the likes of Your Name and Miss Hokusai heralding a new era of excellence in animation, adding to a canon of definitive works such as Akira and My Neighbour Totoro. But with decades of brilliance to choose from, getting started on anime – or just choosing what to watch for movie night – can be daunting.

It's always exciting when a series revisits old characters and storylines.
On When Calls the Heart, Season 11 Episode 6, Thomas Higgins, Elizabeth's old foe and the Superintendent of the School Board, returns to cause trouble.
According to the weekly promo and the photos, he seems even more determined to destroy her career and reputation than he was before.
Thomas Higgins last appeared in When Calls the Heart Season 4 Episode 11 when he wrote a letter that caused Elizabeth to get fired. He only wrote it because she turned him down and sexually harassed her again, hinting he would make it disappear if she dated him.
Elizabeth found proof that he had sexually harassed other teachers, too, and was reinstated, so Higgens likely carries a massive grudge against her.
It's a shame we couldn't bring back Landis instead. While initially set in his ways about how the Valley School District should be run,...

When Calls the Heart finally put some "heart" back in the series.
When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 5 showcased how strong the Hope Valley community was when they worked together and banded together to save Lucas's new resort.
"Stronger Together" explored multiple other subplots and relationships, including whether Nathan and Elizabeth would finally admit their feelings to each other.
Lucas never expected so many issues with clearing the Hope Valley resort, but some were vehemently opposed to it.
The problem was that Mike's sister, Maisy, was the biggest hurdle in their way.
The men only saw her as a problem they needed to overcome, while Mei was worried about getting Maisy to relax and open up.
Since Mei viewed her as a person, Maisy admitted her physical ailments and why she was so demanding about the resort.
It seemed no one took her concerns seriously in Benson Hills, either. They...

When Calls the Heart shines when it focuses on relationships.
The Hope Valley community remains the best of the series, and spoilers for When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 5 tease that certain relationships will be tested and others strengthened as various truths are revealed.
After the drama in When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 4, Elizabeth's relationships with Lucas and Nathan come to a head. Will she finally get some closure with Lucas and decide to move on with Nathan?
It seems like Nathan and Elizabeth have started inching toward romance, but their relationship lately has been filled with misunderstandings, and the spoilers tease that they have yet another one.
Before Elizabeth can move on, though, she must talk to Lucas about what happened with them and if they will co-exist in Hope Valley without awkward run-ins.
Lucas changes the subject every time someone mentions Elizabeth, which contradicts the notion that he's moved on.

We've never learned much about Lucas's past.
Lucas Bouchard has always had big dreams, loved huge surprises, and been loyal to those he cared about.
When an old friend of his arrives unexpectedly on When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 4, some secrets get revealed.
Lucas and Jeanette shared such a history that he was shaken up by her arrival.
Initially, it seemed like he was displeased because he distrusted her. After all, she betrayed him in the past. But it soon became apparent that Jeanette Aucoin was the ultimate schemer.
Lucas knew she had dirt on him that would be harmful to his campaign or could hurt his image among his friends.
Otherwise, he wouldn't have worked so hard to keep her away from his friends, who wanted all the details.

Following two sold-out limited seasons at London’s Barbican, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s acclaimed stage version of Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli classic My Neighbour Totoro will transfer to the West End early in 2025.
The show broke box office records during both its inaugural 15-week term in 2022 and repeated that success on its second iteration, which played for 17 weeks from last November until last month.
Griselda Yorke, My Neighbour Totoro’s executive producer for the RSC, revealed that more than 290,000 saw the production at the Barbican.

Lucas's return to Hope Valley caused quite a reaction.
Many things changed, but Lucas still liked to surprise others and cause a splash, and on When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 3, his return rattled several locals, including Nathan and Elizabeth, who had gotten used to their new normal.
Meanwhile, Bill was determined to prove that Montague was involved with Lucas's attack, but someone else nearby also seemed sketchy.
It is obvious that Nathan and Elizabeth still care about each other, but it gets tedious that Lucas makes another announcement every time their relationship moves forward.
It'll become tiresome if Lucas's other role is the thorn in their blossoming relationship.
Rosemary and Lee insinuated that Lucas still had feelings for Elizabeth, while others seemed to think Nathan was the one to root for. Technically, Elizabeth doesn't need a love interest.
There isn't anything wrong with her being friends with both men and focusing on finding herself,...

Welcome back to Hope Valley. When Calls the Heart returned for its 11th season on April 7 with a premiere episode that answered some of the questions left open at the end of season 10 while also introducing new mysteries.
[Warning: This article contains spoilers for When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 1.]
‘When Calls the Heart’ Season 11 premiere reveals Lucas’s fate
At the end of When Calls the Heart Season 10, newly-elected governor Lucas Bouchard was shot by an unseen assailant. The season 11 premiere picks up immediately after that event, with Lucas’s former fiancée Elizabeth, Mountie Nathan, and Bill Avery bursting into the Valley Voice office to find out what happened.
Details are sketchy, but Lucas has been shot twice and is in surgery. Elizabeth rushes to his side in the hospital in Capital City, though she’s just there as a friend. Fortunately, Lucas pulls through, though he has a long recovery ahead of him. This isn’t a huge surprise.

Welcome back to Hope Valley, Hearties!
A lot changed in When Calls the Heart Season 10, and we're here to review what happened in When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 1 Episode 1 and if it was worth it.
Honestly, things seemed to go a little slow in this first episode, but there are mysteries arising that we're hoping to see play out before too long.
The new season began with a bang, literally. Actually, it started with two bangs as it was revealed that Lucas had been shot shortly after being elected governor.
This was a dramatic move, but do not worry; it was revealed very shortly that Lucas is okay and recovering pretty well, from what we can see in the episode.
We knew something big was happening to Lucas after When Calls the Heart Season 10 Episode 12, but it seemed a little too dramatic that he got his heart broken and...

Mike (Ben Rosenbaum) and Mei’s (Amanda Wong) relationship is getting serious in When Calls the Heart Season 11. In TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek video of the Season 11 premiere, Mike has a special gift for Mei. He sweetly presents Mei with a new bike. “For me?” she asks. Within the realm of martial arts, few directors enjoy the same cult status as Joseph Kuo. Thanks to his presence in pop culture, in music as well as other features, his features from the 1970s remain popular and will certainly be watched by new generations of cinephiles due to their presence in home cinema. However, to fully appreciate what Kuo has given martial arts cinema, it is worth taking a look at some of his features in closer detail, in this case his 1977 effort “7 Grandmasters”. While you might argue the plot is nothing to write home about, the fight sequences and the obsession with physicality, technique and status is an aspect which is quite fascinating and may add to the feature's cult status.

Within the sci-fi genre looking at a possible future, an ideal one or a horrible one, authors and filmmakers often tackle issues about our current world or the human condition in general. Singaporean-American director Vivian Ip deals with the aforementioned concepts in her projects by “capturing intimate moments and universal truths with a cinematic edge” according to her profile of her at bafta.org. In her short feature “At the Water's Edge” she stays true to this description by talking about love, rebellion and human connection at the backdrop of a dark future for our planet.

Most Underrated Horror Anime Series: Eerie Hell Girl, Philosophical Devilman Crybaby & Others (Photo Credit –IMDb)
There is a reason why avid anime fans are offended when non-anime watchers refer to anime as ‘cartoons.’ Cartoons are wholesome, child-appropriate animated sequences that invoke a feeling of joy and fun in people. They’re bright and dreamy and are generally what kids, and even adults, watch to wind down and forget the weighted realities of the world. They’re definitely not something that would give people existential crises and nightmares.
On the other hand, anime is famous for catering to a more adult demographic. And sure, there are numerous anime out there that are more kid-friendly and bright and are considered far from scary. Think “Pokemon” and “Doremon.” But many horror anime, like the famous “Junji Ito Collection” and “Hellsing,” are so spine-chilling and horrific that even adults shy away from them.

The fourth episode of NCIS Sydney brought us an interesting case, and the writing is better this time around, not depending on snakes and sharks to twist the investigations. With a classical approach, the episode begins like an 18th-century murder mystery, but soon, the modern NCIS team arrives, and we are thrown amid the case. The episode becomes a story about love and loss, fathers and sons, duty and desertion, and so much more. The series does gain some pathos through NCIS Sydney Episode 4, as Mackey’s more human side comes out, reminiscing about her days in the military. The rest of the team works on the case in the usual manner, chipping in with their knowledge to untangle the mystery.

This year marks the first since 2014 that Disney has not had a movie hit the $1 billion mark at the box office, so the move should bring much-needed revenue.
The solidarity displayed by striking actors and writers in Hollywood this year was truly impressive. Standing up to multi-billion dollar corporations, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA both secured deals with concessions that outside observers thought they’d never get, and even now studios like Disney are back at work trying to get new scripted TV and movies produced.
Disney is putting three already-released Pixar movies into theaters in early 2024: “Luca,” “Soul” and “Turning Red.” The releases could help Disney improve on a dismal 2023 box office, and assuage viewers angered by strike-induced release delays of other movies. The three Pixar films can be streamed on-demand any time with a subscription to Disney+. Sign Up Now $7.99+ / month disneyplus.com

We saw more than a few movies make their debut on streaming services during the pandemic, including three Pixar movies which will finally get their chance to experience the big screen. Pixar announced today that Soul, Turning Red, and Luca will be released in theaters early next year to set the stage for Inside Out 2.
Soul will hit theaters on January 12th. The film features the voice of Jamie Foxx as Joe Gardner, a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. “But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth,” reads the official synopsis. “Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22, who has never understood the appeal of the human experience.

Negotiations are under way to secure a December or more likely an early January release for “Taylor Swift: “The Eras Tour” movie in mainland China cinemas.
The film, which has grossed some $250 million worldwide since debuting on Oct. 13, is currently being reviewed by Chinese authorities. Separate bodies must approve the import of foreign movies and the content all films destined for public release.
Alibaba Pictures, part of the digital media and entertainment division of e-commerce giant Alibaba, is among the companies understood to be piloting the import and distribution.
Wanda Films, which was previously the majority owner of AMC Theaters, “The Eras Tour’s” North American distributor, is understood to be on board as a theatrical exhibition partner. While AMC and Wanda have untangled most of their corporate connections, Wanda is a powerful ally and is the operator of the largest cinema chain in China.

Studio Ghibli, a scrappy Japanese animation studio that was founded in the ‘80s, would go on to become an industry powerhouse that surpasses Disney’s sense of fantasy, Pixar’s emotional catharsis, and the unabashed against-the-grain individualism of DreamWorks Animation. Hayao Miyazaki’s name is often synonymous with Studio Ghibli, the animation studio that he founded with fellow director Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki. Every Studio Ghibli film is special, but Hayao Miyazaki is an anime auteur whose cinematic offerings become pop culture events that redefine animation and storytelling.
Hayao Miyazaki is a renowned voice in traditional hand-drawn animation whose movies have record-breaking budgets and take over a decade to complete. And every time, they’re worth it. Miyazaki’s feature films may seem like playful escapism to outsiders, but recurring elements and themes define the quintessential Miyazaki experience. Miyazaki’s anime oeuvre may come across as intimidating and impenetrable to newcomers.

Samuel Haskell IV, son of Hollywood agent and film producer Samuel Haskell III, has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman’s torso was found in a trash bag.
The Los Angeles Police Department arrested Haskell after someone rummaged through a dumpster at an Encino strip mall and found the body. Detectives traced the garbage bag to Haskell’s home in Tarzana, California, which he shared with his wife, three kids and in-laws.
Police were originally called to the scene after someone saw what appeared to be body parts in trash bags outside Haskell’s home. By the time police arrived, however, the bags were gone.
“There was no evidence that allowed the officers to make entry into the home,” LAPD Detective Efren Gutierrez told The New York Times.
According to officials, investigators found blood and other signs of murder inside the home.

A group of day laborers told Los Angeles NBC affiliate NBC4 that Sam Haskell Jr. paid them $500 to haul trash bags that were full of body parts from his home. The son of an Emmy-winning producer, Haskell was arrested on suspicion of murder on Wednesday.
The workers said they were hired to carry away three trash bags from inside Haskell’s garage. Haskell initially told the men the bags contained rocks, but the men said it was immediately clear this wasn’t true.
One explained, “When we picked up the bags, we could tell they weren’t rocks.”
The men also described the bags as “soft and soggy.”
Once the workers were a block away, they pulled over to look inside the bags. An unidentified worker said, “I started seeing body parts, a belly button. I was astonished. Of course, I felt bad. We had been tricked.”

Jason Statham is a franchise unto himself. He tends to more or less play the same growly-voiced butt-kicking macho man over and over with superficial differences, like how his titular super-spy in "Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre" enjoys a fine wine. Or how his personal driver, Frank Martin, in "The Transporter" films is meticulous about keeping his suits clean and neatly pressed. You always know exactly what to expect from his films and there's a comfort in that. They embody the type of "Action Movies Your Dad Watches" that were the bread and butter of networks like TNT and TBS in the pre-streaming age of cable.

Lucas and Elizabeth are stronger than ever in the ‘When Calls the Heart’ Season 10 premiere
When Calls the Heart Season 9 ended with Lucas (Chris McNally) proposing to Elizabeth (Erin Krakow). She accepted (of course). Now, the couple are planning their wedding, which is set to take place in the fall. It’s not clear how far away that is, but it seems like a few months, at least, since the kids...

Twenty minutes into Scott Waugh’s Hidden Strike, we get a sandstorm. By then, the movie has successfully established an intriguing premise and is heading towards Mad Max: Fury Road territory. In fact, one of the main leads, the living legend Jackie Chan, drives a bus toward the storm, which essentially adds to the thrill quotient of the movie. Considering how the action genre has been reinvigorated lately thanks to the likes of John Wick 4 and Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, it is not surprising to see a movie like Hidden Strike trying to be innovative.
Despite having John Cena and Jackie Chan, two actors you wouldn’t usually associate with the new breed of action movies, Hidden Strike takes off in a fantastic manner. It introduces a world where capitalism is necessarily the main villain and the cause of the suffering of the poor. With a set-up like that,...

Jackie Chan held his end in portraying Luo Feng in Scott Waugh’s Hidden Strike, and the other end was held by John Cena. The film rode on the shoulders of those two performers, but ultimately, the superficial conflicts and the limited investments in their arcs and resolutions, laden with unnecessarily prolonged action sequences, ensured that the film couldn’t rise above its generic treatment. John Cena played Chris Van Horne and got an opportunity to act alongside the legendary Jackie Chan. The relationship between the two is reminiscent of the characters in Rush Hour, where Jackie Chan starred alongside Chris Tucker. Although it must be added that Cena is no Tucker, he manages to charm his way through the film with witty one-liners and his improvisational dialogue; some tickled me even when they ended up in the outtakes shown in the post-credit scenes. Let’s take a look at...

Scott Waugh had the opportunity to make use of two phenomenal talents in his new movie Hidden Strike, but he couldn’t really achieve the impact he would have liked. It’s an odd pairing—Jackie Chan with John Cena. Both have the same initials, and for a while, it looked like they might go against each other, but the writing ensured that the story remained predictable. Written by Arash Amel, Hidden Strike neither invested much in complex character arcs nor any dilemmas that the characters would really have to struggle with. The movie is carried from one action sequence to the next, and Jackie and John try to salvage the one-note movie on their shoulders through their charm and goofy performances.
Jackie Chan has legendary status when it comes to action cinema. Having done films like The Legend of the Drunken Master and Rush Hour, he has nothing more to prove.

In part two of our conversation with Andrea Brooks, she teases what we can expect from When Calls the Heart Season 10.
She doesn't give away a lot of secrets, but she offers a little insight that builds expectations for the new season.
Settle in and enjoy the full interview, which was conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike and has been edited for clarity below.
How excited are you for everybody to see this season?
Oh, so excited. And because there's been a bit more of a wait this year, the anticipation feels greater than ever before. So I can't wait. Although, in some ways, this is a weird season for me because I do end up being nine months pregnant by the end of the season.
So, I do carry a lot of very strange props. I do have my doctor's bag getting bigger as we are shooting to allocate for my growing belly.

Probably the most popular new shonen anime this year so far, “Hell's Paradise” follows the rules of the samurai/ninja category, but also functions as a homage (takes many loans if your prefer) from a number of other famous titles (not just anime), which, in combination with a series of other aspects, makes it quite unique.
