Although the new horror film Smile may scare some away with its seemingly obvious debt owed to the “slasher” films of the past, it is rather a complex and well-crafted horror film that perhaps signals the arrival of a fresh new voice in the genre.
Immediately following an incident with her patient – Laura Weaver (Caitlin Stasey) — Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) begins suffering from the same bizarre symptoms that Laura had described to her. As the inevitability of her situation begins to crystalize, Dr. Cotter finds herself on a path forcing her to overcome the demons of her past to survive until tomorrow.
Working from his own script, first-time feature director Parker Finn delivers a taught, quick-paced, and well-written supernatural thriller that entertains and keeps the audience engaged until the bitter end. The filmmaker’s approach to the otherworldly aspects of his story allows them to be far more grounded...

As stories of Fantastic Four's production woes spread, Ryan looks behind the scenes at the body horror superhero film we'll never see...
Nb: The following contains spoilers for Fantastic Four.
Casting controversy. Months of rumours about a tortuous, troubled production. Director Josh Trank’s already infamous (now deleted) tweet. The unrelentingly negative reviews.
Having already lived through all that, sitting in a darkened multiplex and actually watching Fox’s Fantastic Four feels less like a normal viewing experience and more like archaeology.
Where is Trank, the director of the superb Chronicle, in among all this? What happened to the David Cronenberg fan who wanted to make a "science fiction tale of something happening to your body and it transforming out of your control" according to a Collider interview? The superhero movie that would fit into the "science fiction, or horror, or even drama sections" of the old Blockbusters video chain?...

In a year full of witless remakes and soulless sequels comes Stewart Hendler's surprising Sorority Row.
A gory tribute to '80s slasher movies, Sorority Row has a hooded killer, beautiful, smarter-than-average victims, dozens of red herrings and a scene stealing Carrie Fisher as the toughest den mother in horror movie history! It's also unexpectedly hip and humorous.
While it's ostensibly a remake of House On Sorority Row, Hendler jettisons most of that (no mutant maniac in a clown suit) and focuses on the Sorority Sisters being stalked. The girls have accidentally killed a fellow Theta Pi member, so they can't go to the cops and have to confront the killer themselves.
Hendler has made a fun, fast-moving movie that captures the feel of '80s slasher classics with a post-ironic tone. He playfully defeats expectations(the meanest girl is the one with the best chance to outwitting the killer!
