Pixar’s “Soul,” “Turning Red” and “Luca” are coming to theaters after they originally had streaming-only releases on Disney+ during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The three movies will come to theaters nationwide in 2024, with tickets going on sale Jan. 2. “Soul” is coming to theaters on Jan. 12, “Turning Red” will be on Feb. 9 and “Luca” arrives on March 22. They will be accompanied by the short films “Burrow,” “Kitbull” and “For the Birds,” respectively.
“Soul” (2020) was the first Pixar movie to release exclusively on Disney+ amid the pandemic while most theaters were closed. “Luca” (2021) and “Turning Red” (2022) also debuted on Disney+ the following years. Pete Docter, Pixar‘s creative chief officer, spoke to Variety before the release of the studio’s unexpected hit “Elemental” earlier this year and said that the Disney+ rollouts “trained” families to watch the movies on streaming.

The biggest and most pleasant surprise of the summer just keeps trucking along at the box office. It's not really going out on a limb to say that "Elemental" wasn't quite the flashiest Pixar offering in recent years upon release, both in terms of a noticeably underwhelming opening weekend total and also its actual quality compared to previous hits from the studio's heyday. But in a confidence-restoring performance, the animated film overcame the ignominy of initially landing in second place to "The Flop," er, I mean "The Flash" and has legged it out to become the biggest original film of the entire pandemic era, as /Film's Ryan Scott covered previously.
But this underdog success story doesn't end there.
Another week brings yet another significant milestone for the little element-based engine that could. The latest box office totals for "Elemental" peg the movie at $469,538,240 worldwide. Significant? Yeah, you could say so.

This summer has had its fair share of bummer headlines in regard to the box office, save for the shocking success of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer." This past weekend saw "Blue Beetle" become another disappointment for DC, while "Strays" got straight-up buried in no small part due to the ongoing strikes that are preventing casts from doing press for films. But amidst the doom and gloom is one of the feel-good stories of the year in Pixar's "Elemental." The film rebounded from absolute disaster to become a success. So much so that it has actually surpassed "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" at the international box office, amazingly enough.
Over the weekend, "Elemental" overtook Sony's animated "Spider-Man" flick overseas, with Pixar's latest now sitting at $307.1 million outside of North America, per The Numbers. Meanwhile, "Across the Spider-Verse" has earned $302.1 million internationally. Now, as far as the overall total goes, the edge still goes to Spidey.

Toby Emmerich’s exit as chairman of the Warner Bros. Pictures group, and the ascension of former MGM film leaders Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, are just the latest instances of upheaval in what is already shaping up to be a tempestuous new era at the studio behind Harry Potter and Batman.
Emmerich’s ouster has been gossiped about for years, dating back well before the company was sold to Discovery. Still, his decision to leave for a production deal stunned executives on the studio’s Burbank lot, many of whom had worked with Emmerich for decades. It comes on the heels of a series of head-spinning directives from Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and his leadership team, who have been simultaneously obsessed with finding 3 billion in cost-saving synergies while expanding the number of movies the company produces. That mission also includes a mandate to land the hottest talent to make those projects,...

It’s never just one thing that prevents a ballplayer from reaching the big leagues. It can be a combination of injuries, life getting in the way, or a player not having the mental makeup or physical ability to reach the pinnacle of the sport. That “what if” can be haunting, but life moves on.
It was arm troubles that led Jim Morris, a former Major League Baseball draft pick, to flame out of the minors by 1989. He went on to become a high school science teacher and a baseball coach in small town Texas. He moved on until his players made him a bet: if they win the league title, he’d have to try out for the pros a decade after giving up his career. The team held their end of the bargain and so did Morris: he still had enough gas in the tank to hit 98 Mph...

In recent years, Major League Baseball has witnessed some of the best rookie campaigns in the game’s 150-plus year history. Each of the past three seasons featured the meteoric rise of a young superstar. In 2017 New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge entered his new chambers at Yankee Stadium and used his gavel to bash 52 home runs, a then rookie record. In 2018, Ronald Acuna unleashed his mix of power, speed, and swagger on the city of Atlanta and quickly became a Braves fan favorite, winning Rookie of the Year and setting himself up for a monster 2019 season that established him as a top-five player in the game. And in 2019 it was New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso who became an immediate star on and off the field as he topped Judge’s 2017 home run record by hitting 53 homers in his first big league season.

Mlb The Show (The Show) is back for another triple play collision of baseball, video games, and entertainment.
This week, (The Show) will talk to a veteran of baseball cinema. Well, actually he’s more of a rookie. Ok, Ok, he’s really The Rookie: Dennis Quaid. The Hollywood star, who portrayed former big-league pitcher Jim Morris in the based-on-true-events 2002 film, discusses his time working on the flick as well as his new Audio Up podcast: The Dennissance.
Of course, what would (The Show) be without its season simulation of the 2020 Mlb season? We can’t be the only ones craving the Pastime, even if it comes from a video game. In “Episode 2: The Rookie,” we also take a look at the origins of baseball video game franchises past and present. Watch episode 2 below and please show us some love by liking, subscribing, and commenting on our YouTube channel!

Beginning her journey with Pixar eight years ago, as a storyboard artist on The Good Dinosaur, Rosana Sullivan made her directorial debut this year with Kitbull, which on Monday made the Academy’s shortlist for Best Animated Short Film.
Examining a fiercely independent stray kitten and a pit bull, and the unlikely friendship that emerges between them, Kitbull emerged from Sullivan’s desire to capture animals in animation, the way that they actually are. “I love cat videos, as we all do, and I just wanted to draw a kitten being a kitten, because I never saw that done in animation, at least not often. Usually, they’re anthropomorphized, and I just wanted to capture the spirit of a real kitten,” the director tells Deadline. “It then evolved into something about connection and friendship between two outcast characters, because that was something that I had struggled with as a kid.

Woody and the rest of the gang are Back!
The buzz surrounding Toy Story 4 has been building for quite some time now. As far back as March 2015, Pixar President Jim Morris described the new addition to the beloved franchise as a "love story" that will focus on the relationship between Bo Peep and Woody, but plenty of time has passed since then, and it seems the story has changed quite a bit.
In the first teaser trailer for the latest installment in the beloved animated franchise, Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the toys welcome a new addition to Bonnie's room: Forky, a spork-turned-craft-project who doesn't want to be there, played by Veep's Tony Hale. According to director Josh Cooley, "The world of Toy Story is built upon the idea that everything in the world has a purpose. A toy's purpose is to be there for its child.

In the midst of March Madness and with the Kentucky Derby around the corner, the first pitch of baseball season is almost here.

The Bad News Bears
Considered by some to be the best baseball movie ever, the film celebrates its 40th anniversary this month (April 7, 1976). In an article from the NY Daily News, one line reads, “It is a movie that someone like the late Philip Seymour Hoffman called his favorite, and one which resonates on many levels today, with all different generations.”

My alternate Super Bowl programming this year was a DVD of The Rookie I checked out from the library. I had first seen the baseball drama closer to its original theatrical release in 2002 and remembered enjoying the story, but hadn’t really thought of the Disney film in the past ten years.
Dennis Quaid (Frequency, The Day After Tomorrow) leads the movie based on the true story of Jimmy Morris, a Texas high-school baseball coach who makes a deal with his team that he will try out for the major leagues if they win district and go on to state. Their last collaboration, sappy sports drama The Blind Side, won Sandra Bullock an Oscar and received a nomination for Best Picture, and now director John Lee Hancock and producer Gil Netter are set to team up again, for an untitled biopic centering on former Major League Baseball all-star Lenny Dykstra.
Details about the project are being kept largely under wraps, so it’s unknown whether the film will focus on Dykstra’s time playing for the New York Mets or on the shady financial empire he built later, which included a jet charter company and a magazine specifically geared towards professional athletes. Dykstra’s financial dealings after retiring from baseball led to a 2012 conviction for bankruptcy fraud, concealment of assets and money laundering. The former athlete spent six months in prison, did 500 hours of community service, and paid $200,000 in restitution after pleading guilty to the charges.

A bond is soon built between the group of kids who share the same passion - baseball. It might be the commonality they all share, but it is the memories they have on that baseball field that bond them together forever.

Zap2it: Your "Vegas" character is based on a real, living person. Does that make it more important to get it right?
Dennis Quaid: It does up the stakes, because I have played so many real people who were still living at the time, like Gordo Cooper in "The Right Stuff," and in "The Rookie," Jim Morris was a real guy, and Bill Clinton. I think I've played about 10 of those, and I've always sought [the real people] out. If someone was doing my story, I'd want them to get it right. That doesn't mean they have to sugarcoat the truth, but I want to capture the essence of somebody and tell the story from their point of view.
Zap2it: "Vegas" is set in 1960. Are you having any nostalgic jolts?
Dennis Quaid: Yeah, it's mainly things like the [rotary] dial phones instead of cellphones and the cars and the way the houses were furnished back then.
