- In 1980, Barnett opened sports management agency CorpSport International (Edmonton, Alberta) modeling it after International Management Group (IMG). In 1990, he sold CorpSport to IMG and became president of IMG hockey operations.
- As the owner/operator of the restaurant-lounge The Sports Page (Edmonton, Alberta) in the late 1970s, he organized an annual celebrity-athlete softball game.
