One Way Ticket: Jacob Lawrence's Migration Series Museum of Modern Art, NYC hrough September 7, 2015
One of the most startling impressions that one takes away from seeing the reunited Migration Series at the Museum of Modern Art is how current the paintings still feel current in a way that Céline still does, or Christopher Isherwood, or John Steinbeck -- documenters of a very specific moment of transition, faithfully recording sensitive observations. Lawrence, who had dropped out of school when he was sixteen, was encouraged by his single mother to take art classes and visit museums. He studied at the Harlem Art Workshop, in the...

A planned Teddy Pendergrass biopic is at the center of a new legal wrangle as the late R&B icon's son and widow battle for control over his estate. Teddy Pendergrass II and the singer's second wife, Joan, have been fighting since the star died from colon cancer in January 2010, after the two parties produced conflicting wills.
Film producer Charlie Mack began working on the project with Pendergrass before his passing, but the picture, which is in pre-production and will star singer-actor Tyrese Gibson as the soul man, has now been put on hold until the late icon's warring family members resolve their conflict.
"It's kind of a rough time," Mack tells America's Sister 2 Sister magazine. "I'm trying to stay as neutral as possible. We had a great relationship with Teddy and Joan, but there's conflict between Teddy Jr. and Teddy's widow, Joan."
However, the producer is confident Tyrese will...

Will Smith's business partner is offering a reward for information leading to the capture of a thug who drew a gun on him in an attempted robbery on Friday.
Movie producer Charles 'Charlie Mack' Alston, Smith's longtime friend and associate, had stopped at a gas station in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to refuel his BMW when he was held up by an armed man demanding money.
Alston tells Philly.com, "I guess he felt like he had the upper hand because he had a gun. He was wrong... This dude runs up and puts a gun in my stomach. I'm looking at him, and he's feeling in my pocket, going, 'Where's the money at? Where's the money at?'"
Alston pulled $3,000 (£2,000) in cash from his pocket, before swiftly manoeuvring to pin his attacker to the ground.
The man bit and scratched Alston to free himself, and made off with $2,700 (£1,800) of the money.
Alston has now offered a $5,000 (£3,300) reward for any information that could lead to the robber's arrest.
He adds, "We never know what the circumstance is. He could be a bad seed, or trying to feed his seed. To me, it's sad."...
