Fanatics, the sports-focused company led by CEO Michael Rubin, wants to create a Comic-Con for sports fans.
Fanatics is planning its first live flagship event, which it is calling Fanatics Fest, for Aug. 16-18, to be held at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City.
NFL legends Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, MLB legend Derek Jeter, and NBA superstar Kevin Durant are attached to participate, as is entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk, Eli Manning, WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu, and wrestling legend Hulk Hogan. The company’s events division, Fanatics Events, is producing the show.
“There isn’t a unifying event for sports, the way you see it in pop culture with Comic-Con, or for influencers with VidCon, or tech with CES or music with South By [SXSW], none of those platforms exist [for sports],” says Lance Fensterman, the CEO of Fanatics Events, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “It just became clear that...

The second effort to return the Electronic Entertainment Expo to an in-person event has come up short.
ReedPop’s annual trade event for the video game industry has canceled its 2023 iteration, which was set to take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center from June 13 to 16. This year’s event would have marked the first time it returned in person since 2019. In a statement to The Verge, ReedPop’s global vp gaming Kyle Marsden-Kish said the issue was “resourcing challenges.”
“This was a difficult decision because of all the effort we and our partners put toward making this event happen, but we had to do what’s right for the industry and what’s right for E3. We appreciate and understand that interested companies wouldn’t have playable demos ready and that resourcing challenges made being at E3 this summer an obstacle they couldn’t overcome,” Marsden-Kish said. “For those...

New York Comic Con, the most attended comic book and pop culture convention in the United States, is officially moving online less than two months ahead of its previously scheduled October kickoff. The grim news, while hardly shocking, does come with the small silver lining that the event will live on via live digital panels on YouTube.
ReedPop, the large public event-based company behind Nycc and a number of other pop culture gatherings, also announced Tuesday several major television panels have already agreed to move to YouTube panels, including Starz’s American Gods, CBS All Access’s catalogue of new Star Trek shows, DreamWorks Animation’s presentation for new television animation, and an unspecified slate of Hulu and FX programs. These festivities will commence the same weekend Nycc was originally scheduled to occur at Manhattan’s Javits Center, running from Oct. 8 to Oct. 11.

New York Comic Con said Tuesday it is canceling its annual in-person convention this year at the Javits Center and instead will host an all-digital confab set for October 8-11.
Organizer ReedPop said it is partnering with YouTube on the event, with exclusive live streams of panels set for Nycc’s YouTube channel. Fans will be able to participate in talent Q&As using the video platform’s Community and Live Chat features.
Starz has been confirmed to bring American Gods, CBS All Access its Star Trek universe series, with DreamWorks Animation, Hulu and FX also set to be a part of the slate. More content will be added in the run-up to Nycc, which has built its place as a more TV-heavy cousin to San Diego Comic Con. The West Coast event also had to convert its annual confab into an all-digital affair this year because of restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic.
