Cinematography: Mac Ahlberg
Film Editor: Lee Percy
Written by Stuart Gordon, Dennis Paoli, William Norris
Produced by Brian Yuzna
Music: Richard Band
Directed by Stuart Gordon
Released in 1985, Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator remains the grandest of Grand Guignols, a viscerally entertaining comedy that is just grindhouse enough for fans of Blood Feast and arthouse enough for connoisseurs of Francis Bacon’s more grisly canvases.
Originally scripted for Chicago’s Organic Theater Company by Gordon and co-writers Dennis Paoli and William Norris, Re-Animator was based on H. P. Lovecraft’s short story, Herbert West – Re-Animator, first published in 1922. Set in the blandly generic college town of Arkham, Massachusetts, the action revolves in and around the classrooms of stately Miskatonic University’s medical school and the sterilized atmosphere of the academy’s dank morgue evoked so well by Mac Ahlberg’s lush cinematography.

Ah, the Third Doctor series, one of a handful of books I really look forward to each issue. This has been a blast, a near perfect blend of nostalgia and skillful writing, of a nod to the past and a wink to the future. It is helping to fill in gaps we never knew were there to begin with. Jon Pertwee’s Doctor lacks the humour and wackiness of many of his future regenerations, but makes up for it with his flair and sheer individuality. And his Venusian karate of course, let’s not forget that.
Last issue saw Salamander, the doppelganger and sometime impersonator of The Second Doctor, drop the pretence of the alien invasion and reveal his true plan. He has been biding his time, stealing and replicating Time Lord technology on Earth, all the while studying The Doctor from afar.

United We Are, the much-anticipated studio album from Hardwell, has generated a sizeable amount of buzz in the lead up to its release, and rightfully so. For the world’s #1 DJ, a debut album is a big deal and is undoubtedly going to be put under the microscope, as is customary with all the big names in the industry these days (see Porter Robinson & Mat Zo). So, was the wait worth it? Has the Dutch producer delivered? Read on to find out.
The fact that Hardwell is the reigning #1 DJ in the world means that he’s also become one of the most sought after Edm producers, especially for artists looking to break into dance music. So, it comes as no surprise that United We Are would feature at least one mainstream vocalist on a more pop-y sounding track. This time around, Jason Derulo makes the cut and he arrives...

In June 2014, director Alex Lightman produced his first feature film, Tear Me Apart. Here he talks about the major lessons him and his team learnt along the way.
The London Screenwriters’ Festival 2011 was where my career really began. Made to talk to the person next to me by festival creative director Chris Jones, I shook hands with screenwriter Tom Kerevan. A fateful encounter.
We started working together and soon after met cinematographer Ernesto Herrmann on a short film shoot. The three of us have been working together ever since.
In May 2013 we made the somewhat snap decision to take the plunge and produce a feature film ourselves. Having never produced something of this scale, I fully admit that the undertaking was terrifying, but with that dangerous mix of confidence, arrogance and blind optimism we figured that between the three of us, we must amount to at least one competent producer…...

Hardwell is currently working on finishing up his debut album and this week, he gave us a preview of the disc’s first single. Titled Young Again and featuring the vocals of Chris Jones, the track will officially drop on October 20th, but for now, you can check out a preview of it below.
With piano chords, strong vocals and a bit of country guitar, the song offers up a catchy melody and certainly has “radio-friendly” written all over it (which is perfectly fine). It actually sounds kind of similar to some of Avicii’s recent stuff, but I’m definitely digging it and am looking forward to hearing the whole thing.
Check out Young Again below and let us know what you think of the latest from Hardwell. Does the DJ have another massive hit on his hands here? Sound off below!

I'm in awe after watching this video of a fully CG animated face. It was created by Chris Jones, and it's stunningly realistic. The video is called "Ed," and it is a work in progress. Jones used Lightwave, Sculptris, and Krita composited with Davinci Resolve Lite to create the visual. I came across the video on Gizmodo, which makes a point of saying, "I can even believe he has a soul behind those eyes." That's something I can agree with. Watch the video for yourself, it's so well done that it kind of freaks me out a little.

In a moving piece called "Reflecting for the New Year: Roger's Last Day," Chaz Ebert looks back to April 4 of 2013, the day film critic Roger Ebert died. Highlights from the piece below, which is a transcript of what she told to Chris Jones of "Esquire." Steve James' documentary of Ebert's memoir, "Life Itself," will be premiering at Sundance on January 19. Chaz writes in her blog post that she hopes James portrays "the man, not the icon" in the film -- and "to show his heart." Meanwhile, Indiewire, Sundance and the Roger Ebert Scholarship for Film Criticism have all collaborated to send six aspiring film critics to this year's fest (finalists here). So Ebert's legacy will be front and center in the weeks to come. Chaz on the moment Ebert died:My daughter and I went to pick him up [from the hospital]. When we got there, the nurses were helping him get dressed.

From 'mouldy British sex farce' to 'thrilling theatre', the Mike Nichols staging of Pinter's classic play draws mixed responses
Bond is back on Broadway, and this time Daniel Craig is starring alongside his wife, Rachel Weisz, in Betrayal. It's a pairing that has already broken box office records at the Ethel Barrymore theatre and has almost sold out its run, with some tickets going for more than $400 (£248).
However, American theatre critics are divided after last night's opening gala. Some have praised Mike Nichols's brooding production of Harold Pinter's 1978 play, which also stars Life of Pi's Rafe Spall. Others have accused Nichols of misjudging its tone, and even of riding slipshod over it.
The New York Times' Ben Brantley heads up the latter camp. Though Brantley argues that its "recipe for classy eroticism [is] a New Yorker's favourite catnip," he likens the staging to "the kind of rowdy old...

To any of the uninitiated, Voodoo Six are one of the primest cuts of modern hard rock, providing the ultimate sustenance to any and all who feel they’ve gone without a battering-ram-sized riff or throaty foam-topped vocal-line rammed down their throat for too long.
“We just have fun”, twin-lead guitarist Matt Pearce tells me before the gig, as the attitude within the Voodoo camp is that of righteous good times and a workingman’s attitude. Having just come off one hell of a summer touring with none other than Iron Maiden, there are a few humorous things that stick out as comparisons between flying around with one of the biggest bands in the world, and then trundling back up the M1 in a van.
“We always enjoy these kinds of shows, we’re big fans of these kinds of shows. But the [Iron Maiden] scale is huge” says drummer Joe Lazarus.

Let's return to the age of green screens and full-motion video as the follow-up to 1998's "Overseer," "Tex Murphy: Tesla Effect," gets a lengthy new trailer.
The crowdfunded sequel is from developer Big Finish Games, founded by Chris Jones and Aaron Conners, the minds behind the 90's Fmv "Tex Murphy" adventure games "Under a Killing Moon" and "The Pandora Directive." They're back with a sequel which sees the hard-boiled detective back and missing a chunk of his memories after getting capped at the conclusion of 1998's "Overseer."
The game's successful Kickstarter campaign saw "Tesla Effect" rake in $600,000, well above its $450,000 goal. From the looks of it, the production costs have gone into creating the green screen environments of post World War III San Francisco, where the "Tex Murphy" games are set.
Although originally set for a December 2012 release, the new trailer is teasing a Q1 2014 launch date. Atlus will be...

The successful Kickstarter project for the revival of the Tex Murphy series has a trailer, and here it is...
The Tex Murphy adventure games have a large cult following and the mixture of live Fmv and 3D rendered environments made for some unique sleuthing with a big dose of comedy for good measure. The series has lay dormant for years with the last game, Overseer, releasing in 1998, but it's set to return in Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure, following its successful Kickstarter project, where it was previously titled Project Fedora.
The game will bring original Tex Murphy star and game designer, Chris Jones, back to the screen, this time using the latest tech to enhance Murphy's universe, which is set in a rather dystopian, post apocalyptic San Francisco, a place also populated by mutants.
The new game looks like it could be Tex's biggest case yet,...

“Looking stupid is more feared than losing money.” That’s one of several truths contained in a blog post by Chris Jones titled, “Who Will Finance Your Film and Why.” When it comes to independent film, where the often lack of upfront distribution makes financial modeling difficult, equity fundraising is more art than science. Many articles that purport to tell you how to raise money ultimately don’t. But Jones’ post is a good one; indeed, I pretty much agree with everything he writes. Like about looking stupid. It sounds crazy but it’s true. Looking stupid is feared more than loosing money. …...

That was Alex Milano’s first thought when smoke began to flow into his theater during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises. It all happened during a shoot-out scene in the movie, so the loud bangs he heard just seemed like part of the act.
But then it didn’t stop. Bullets came whizzing through the walls and panic replaced the good cheer.

We are deeply saddened to report a tragedy has struck moviegoers in the heart of the country late last night as MTV confirms that a gunman opened fire at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colorado, killing at least 12 people and wounding more than 50.
This morning at around 12:30 a.m. the shooter kicked open a back door of the Century Aurora 16 theater and threw a smoke bomb, reportedly dressed in a bulletproof vest, goggles, black camouflage gear and a gas mask and brandishing an Ak-47-style assault rifle, a shotgun and two handguns, while also setting off a "scrap metal pepper bomb" which released shrapnel throughout the audience.
Police in Aurora, a suburb of Denver, calmly apprehended a 24-year-old suspect, now identified as James Holmes, outside the theater, also searching his home for more weapons or explosives. There is no evidence of an additional shooter.

The Tex Murphy sequel Project Fedora has been successfully funded on Kickstarter, currently surpassing its $450,000 goal with $513,137 as of writing this.
"Honestly, the chance to bring Tex back and building a new game is like having all my birthdays, Christmases, and sports teams winning their respective championships an having it all occur on the same day," says Tex Murphy creator and star, Chris Jones.
There's still four days left in the Kickstarter, and Jones is looking to add more to the game if they hit certain "stretch goals."
The first stretch goal was to exceed the original goal by 10% ($495,000), which has already been met. This means developer Big Finish Games will expand Chandler Avenue with three new businesses and add additional characters.
At 20% ($540,000), they'll port the game to android tablets and Xbox 360, pending approval from Microsoft. They'll also provide French, Spanish, Italian, and German language options, as well as "more recognizable actors.

Still riding feel-good Roger Ebert waves from Chris Jones's now-iconic Esquire profile from a couple of years ago? Well, hop off those and soak in some cattiness, egotism, high jinks, and fine usages of the term frenemies courtesy of Slate's lengthy excerpt of a new oral history about Ebert and his longtime sparring partner Gene Siskel. "They never would have chosen each other as friends," says one source, awkwardly identified via initials and an initials-key. Minor revelations include: At the Movies' tapings often ran four to six hours owing to arguments, and a coin toss was the official deciding factor for disputes. Like, so official that every producer had to keep a quarter in his or her pocket. But by far the best anecdote, corroborated in triplicate, is the news that Siskel and Ebert began every taping with a boisterous round of patty-cake. "They performed it with complicated hand/knee slaps and everything,...

TVnz reports: A fake Batman has marched into Christchurch central police station demanding to know what emergency had triggered the "bat signal" - white light beaming through the sky. "And then he wanted to know what was going on and why he'd been called, because he'd seen the lights in the sky." Sgt Jones, who was just clocking on when the hero arrived on Sunday, said he was too "scrawny" to make a convincing Batman, adding Robin would have to be 6'-4" and built like a tank to help him out". The total of 29 chefs starting off the competition is quite a step for the series, as the seasons before hand have only contained up to 17 or 18 “chef’testants.” This amount of initial contestants helped Chicago to gain six different hopefuls. The six chefs from Chicago that will take part in the new season come from a variety of different restaurants all around the city:
Chef Beverly Kim comes from Aria Restaurant which “engages a contemporary twist on conventional dining. A surprisingly experiential and engaging concept offering a bold menu of new world Asian cuisine, combined with a delectable selection of sushi variations.”
Chefs Richie Farina and Chris Jones...

"Top Chef" really is mixing things up for its ninth season.
In addition to the three-city tour of Texas, the show will now kick off with a record 29 finalists who will vie for a chef's coat. After narrowing them down in the premiere, a chosen 16 will get the coveted title of "chef'testant."
Competition will take the series to Austin, Dallas and San Antonio, where scheduled guest judges include Charlize Theron, Pee-wee Herman, Cat Cora, John Besh, Tim Love and Patti Labelle.
Previously reported additions to the judging table Emeril Lagasse and Hugh Acheson will join returning host Padma Lakshmi, head judge Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons. And Colicchio has an extra task this season. He'll host "Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen," a web series where eliminated chefs will face off in an effort to get back on the show before the finale.
Scroll down for details on the 29 finalists...

People have been buzzing about the possibility, and then the reality, of Top Chef Texas, for months. Now, finally, Bravo has released serious details about the ninth season of the chef competition. The show will premiere November 2nd, at 10 pm, just in time for National Deviled Egg Day. And Zagat Buzz is reporting that Top Chef Texas guest stars will include Charlize Theron, Pee-wee Herman, Cat Cora, John Besh, Tim Love and Patti Labelle, a distinctly motley crew.
But most importantly, Bravo has released all the names and restaurant affiliations of the season's contestants. It's heavy on chefs from New York, La, Chicago and Seattle. There are even two cooks from one pioneering Windy City eatery, Moto. (Funny coincidence or an ingenious casting director strategy to drum up drama? Despite the Texan setting, there are only two chefs from the Lone Star State, and just a handful of contestants from other states in the South.

Washington, Sept 15: Justin Timberlake has revealed that he had the 'most memorable' day of his life when he went unnoticed at Comic-Con this year by dressing up as Ernie from 'Sesame Street'.
Timberlake still cherishes the day when he managed to enjoy an entire afternoon without having to worry about screaming fans, paparazzi swarms or mass hysteria.
The 30-year-old singer and actor joined journalist Chris Jones, who dressed up as Burt, for an incognito outing to the pop culture convention in San Diego, California, for an Esquire cover story.

In the cover story of this month’s Esquire, Justin Timberlake talks about the day he turned invisible. Or rather, the day he wore an Ernie-from-Sesame Street costume and toodled around Comic-Con like just another dude in a costume. (Writer Chris Jones played Bert. Big summer for the multi-colored gender-less roommates!) The joke, of course, is that Timberlake is such a recognizable and oddly approachable superstar that he has to put on a muppet costume to be incognito. (“I can sometimes walk around New York if I dress the right way,” he tells Esquire, “but that’s it.”) It...

Justin Timberlake was able to go unnoticed at Comic-Con this year by attending the fan-filled event in a Sesame Street costume.
The singer-turned-actor went incognito in an Ernie disguise to tour the pop culture convention in San Diego, California with reporter Chris Jones, who donned a Bert outfit.
Jones accompanied Timberlake while he spent the day mingling with crowds of fans and photographers as part of Esquire's October cover story.
The star lapped up the attention while preserving his anonymity, and refused Jones' suggestion to take off his mask to surprise the crowds.
Timberlake told the magazine, "No way, dude. You have no idea what it's like. I can sometime walk around New York if I dress the right way, but that's it...

It's unusual for Justin Timberlake to go unnoticed. But at this year's Comic-Con in San Diego, where the actor was promoting In Time, Timberlake spent an entire afternoon out in public without having to worry about screaming fans, paparazzi swarms or mass hysteria. That's because Timberlake was dressed as Ernie from Sesame Street. As part of Esquire's October cover story, journalist Chris Jones and Timberlake donned Burt and Ernie costumes and took to the San Diego Convention Center. There are so many jokes to be made about Justin Timberlake attending Comic-Con with Esquire interviewer Chris Jones, dressed as Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street, especially on marriage equality weekend.. For the record, Timberlake was Ernie.
David Boies and Ted Olsen are set to receive the highest honor available from the American Bar Association, the Aba Medal. Sadly, it's unrelated to their work against Prop 8, but it's good to know we've got the best of the best working on it.
Dolly Parton performed at the Hollywood Bowl, and apparently did a freestyle rap about Queen Latifah. It's honestly not half bad.
Charlize Theron will star in Young Adult, written by Diablo Cody, about a Ya novelist who starts acting immature in order to reclaim her identity. It's set for December. Is it time for our own Brent Hartinger to have a midlife crisis?
Do not screw with Blair Waldorf.

As you might have expected, Justin Timberlake’s Comic-Con experience was the same blend of raw geekiness and amazing smooth-ity that makes him our fantasy nerd boyfriend. While at the convention last week promoting his upcoming sci-fi thriller In Time, the singer/actor teamed up with Esquire reporter Chris Jones to dole out secretly sexy hugs while dressed as Sesame Street characters. “If you were at Comic-Con yesterday, and you took a picture with a sketchy Bert and Ernie… I was Bert. Justin Timberlake was Ernie,” Jones tweeted afterwards. People probably should have been tipped off when they saw a generic Ernie costume at a sci-fi/fantasy convention. Or when that same Ernie started radiating such intense sexual mojo, any person wearing a sexy Storm Trooper costume lost consciousness.
“His idea. Also had Elmo and Cookie Monster available. We thought Bert and Ernie made for better bonding,” Jones revealed on Twitter.

There were scores of outlandish costumes and cosplay outfits at Comic Con this past week, but Justin Timberlake may have trumped them all: dressed up as Ernie from Sesame Street. The catch? Nobody knew it was Jt -- not until the next day.
The perennial jokester, at the San Diego convention to promote his new movie In Time, purportedly strolled around incognito Thursday as the beloved orange-faced children's character along with Esquire writer Chris Jones, who accompanied him as Bert. According to Jones, who is working on a profile of the actor-singer for the magazine, the idea was all Timberlake's, who thought that "Bert and Ernie made for better bonding" than Elmo and the Cookie Monster, which were also available.
Under the Twitter handle MySecondEmpire, Jones tweeted:

Esquire writer Chris Jones tweeted some strange news about hanging out with Justin Timberlake at Comic-Con this past weekend. Accept the lead role in a musical and there's nowhere to hide, Daniel Radcliffe. But somehow semi-competence is perfect here
If this series proves anything, it is that the quality of people's acting will always be a matter of opinion. Singing and dancing, on the other hand ... Well, if you accept the lead role in a Broadway musical then there is only so much uncertainty to hide behind. As Daniel Radcliffe has just discovered.
Two things emerge unanimously from the American reviews of his performance as the young window cleaner J Pierrepont Finch, who strives to scale the corporate pyramid in How to Succeed in Oh I Can't Be Bothered You Type the Rest. The first thing: everybody wishes young Radcliffe well. The second thing: absolutely no one thinks he can sing.
"As winningly game and diligent as he shows himself to be ... he's out of his league," says Peter Marks in the Washington Post.

The latest movie to get the tuner treatment is "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" which opened at the Palace Theater Sunday to mixed notices. However, with the first four of this season's nine new musicals already shuttered, this show could well contend at the Tony Awards. There were some good reviews with Elisabeth Vincentelli (New York Post) calling it "a shamelessly feel-good show." And Chris Jones (Chicago Tribune) deemed it to be "a far from revelatory but irresistibly enjoyable and big-hearted confection." However, many of the critics carped about its campiness. For New York Times scribe Charles Isherwood, "this hyperactively splashy show wants so desperately to give audiences a gaudy good time that the results are oddly enervating." But Thom Geier (EW) conceded, "there's a dance-party atmosphere that helps compensate for the show's plot implausibilities and clunkier moments." Olivier Award nominee Tony She...

A baby orangutan was given its own private four-bed cabin as it travelled from Santander, Spain to Portsmouth on a ferry. The 11-month old animal, named Silvestre, had been rejected by his mother in a Spanish zoo and was taken to Dorset-based sanctuary Monkey World on a Brittany Ferries vessel, Portsmouth's The News reports. Brittany Ferries' Chris Jones said: "Apparently he spent most of the time swinging from the ladders and bunks. I was here when he arrived and I met him. "He's a lovely little orangutan - he just melts your heart. Because he was so young and had been separated from his mother, he had to be (more)...

The London Screenwriters' festival saw differences of opinion on what impact the demise of the Film Council will have
Forget double-dip recessions. With 500 delegates, the first London Screenwriters' festival, held at Regent's College last weekend, was a sell-out. But what did these assorted optimists learn about their prospects? Is the British film industry becalmed in credit-crunch doldrums? Or are fresh winds blowing in? The answer was a resounding: "Yes and no."
Contrasting perspectives came from opposite poles of the industry: keynote speaker Tim Bevan, co-founder of the ever-successful Working Title and head of the doomed UK Film Council, and festival co-organiser Chris Jones, author of The Guerilla (sic) Film Makers Handbook.
Inevitably, Bevan was asked about what might happen when the Film Council is disbanded. According to the culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt, there will actually be more money for development and production than there was before, and Bevan agreed that...

A 'guerrilla film-maker' has leapt into the spotlight to accuse British films of 'frittering' away money. His targets are dubious
Such is the pace at which we're speeding into the new age of austerity, it's easy to miss much of the scenery along the way. And yet I couldn't help but pause for thought last weekend at the recent holding forth of "guerrilla filmmaker" Chris Jones, who announced in the Observer that the real problem with British film was its "frittering" away of vast sums of money on impossibly expensive productions that then fail to find two paying customers to rub together. Bold words – and more than slightly suspect ones.
Because to me, just as the feeling lingers that the coalition's first wave of cuts has been informed less by fine-tuned economic policy than the urge to squash things they don't like, Jones's comments seem to be not so much...

Gentle reader, I know it's been an eon and a half since last I told you to dust off that bookmark button. But to be honest, I've been buried in the same set of webcomics for a long time now, with nothing piquing my interest as such... until now. Found literally by happenstance, I bring to you today a webcomic that is not like any other I've brought to you thus far. I bring to you... The Gutters.
Produced and written by Ryan Sohmer, the same dude that puts out a former Webcomic You Should Be Reading, Least I Could Do, The Gutters is truly a unique webcomic beast. Instead of a singular cast, The Gutters uses today's comic books as fodder for content. Expressing a gripe about "One More Day" or "Blackest Night," or offering a more general comics in-joke, the strip skewers just about everyone in the industry.

Two plays by Sarah Ruhl are among the 10 new works of theater selected for the 91st edition of the annual Best Plays Theater Yearbook. The choices for 2009-10 were announced today by Jeffrey Eric Jenkins, editor of the yearbook, which will be published by Limelight Editions in 2011. The Best Plays Theater Yearbook was founded in 1920 by drama critic Burns Mantle and honors each work with an essay. This year’s selections were chosen from among Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway productions that opened between June 1, 2009, and May 31, 2010. The new volume will also honor three plays cited by the Harold and Mimi Steinberg New Play Awards and Citations competition."Despite the naysayers who decry the end of theatrical civilization as each season draws to a close, Best Plays Theater Yearbook finds it increasingly difficult each year to whittle our list to a top 10," Jenkins, who chose the plays in consultation with the yearbook’s editorial board,...
