Oscars coverage in the UK was free-to-air last night for the first time in two decades but ITV’s coverage was slammed on social media for insensitivity and a lack of critical expertise.
The L.A. ceremony was watched by a peak of almost 1M UK viewers and a 630,000 average from its 10.15 p.m. GMT start time until the early hours of the morning but audiences took to X to make their complaints heard.
Deadline revealed ITV had scooped Oscars rights from Sky last year and the coverage was helmed by British broadcaster Jonathan Ross, who was joined by a panel made up of The Hobbit actor Richard Armitage, radio and documentary presenter Yinka Bokinni, actress Fay Ripley and comedian/critic Ben Bailey Smith.

This article contains major spoilers for the finale of "True Detective: Night Country."
In 2019, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) accused the police in Nome, Alaska of "a systemic and disastrous failure" to protect Native women. The accusation came in the aftermath of the rape of an Inupiaq woman named Clarice Hardy, a case she claimed was not investigated thoroughly by law enforcement. The accusation came less than two weeks after an AP investigation was released following multiple complaints from Alaska Native women from Nome and the surrounding villages, all claiming that their reports of sexual assault were not "investigated aggressively."
A cursory Google search will bring similar reports from Indigenous communities across the globe. The National Crime Information Center reported that, in 2016, there were 5,712 reports of missing American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls. However, the US Department of Justice's federal missing person database, NamUs, only logged...

Hollywood legend Robert De Niro has claimed that his Gotham Awards speech was censored during the live ceremony.
The actor claimed anti-Trump comments were removed without notice, reports Variety.
“I’m going to go back. I’m sorry. Okay, there was a mistake in this. I’ll keep going. Just keep scrolling,” De Niro said early on in his speech.
“I just want to say one thing,” he said, doubling back. “The beginning of my speech was edited, cut out, and I didn’t know about it. And I want to read it. History isn’t history anymore. Truth is not truth. Even facts are being replaced by alternative facts, and driven by conspiracy theories and ugliness”.
“In Florida, young students are taught that slaves developed skills that could be applied for their personal benefit,” De Niro said, quoted by Variety.
“The entertainment industry isn’t immune to this festering disease.

Killers of the Flower Moon star Robert De Niro was confused when he took the stage at the Gotham Awards in New York City on Monday night.
The Oscar-winning actor was on hand to introduce the Historical Icon and Creator Tribute award for Martin Scorsese’s Apple film, which also stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone.
When De Niro began reading his prepared remarks for the introduction of the award, he noticed his comments had been edited. Robert De Niro led an eventful Killers of the Flower Moon tribute at the Gotham Awards tonight, seeming to struggle with the teleprompter but then circling back after a bit to say that his speech had been edited without his knowledge, thus the confusion. The director and screenwriter of "Thanksgiving" — Eli Roth and Jeff Rendell, respectively — have been very vocal about the fact that Thanksgiving seems to be a holiday with vast untapped potential as fodder for horror films, slasher movies in particular. After all, Halloween and Christmas are well-trodden as body count fare and even lesser holidays like Independence Day have their memorable slashers. Poor Turkey Day has only one; though "Blood Rage" is a pretty fantastic little indie that everyone should make a part of their yearly traditions, it uses Thanksgiving as a side dish rather than the main course.
So, Roth and Rendell were determined to fill this void themselves, and 2007's "Grindhouse" project by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino gave them just the opportunity they needed. Adding a few days onto the "Hostel Part II" shoot, Roth shot a faux trailer for "Thanksgiving" in the Grindhouse manner, making it look...

A new holiday horror classic emerges with the arrival of Eli Roth‘s Thanksgiving in theaters on November 17.
In Thanksgiving, “After a Black Friday riot ends in tragedy, a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts – the birthplace of the infamous holiday.”
Bloody Disgusting spoke with Roth, who wrote the script with Jeff Rendell, about his gory slasher and how it’s evolved since its faux trailer origins. In part one of our chat, the horror filmmaker reflected on the origins of his slasher and his thoughts on modern horror.
Now, in part two, Roth shares the research put into the contemporary slasher and the design behind his killer, John Carver.
While Roth is a lifelong horror study, filmmaker, and fanatic, Thanksgiving alters the cold open kill that’s tradition for the slasher subgenre. When asked if he felt any pressure expanding the fake Grindhouse trailer and its memorable kills in a contemporary slasher,...

Eli Roth is home for the holidays with enough fiendish fun and ripped flesh to send horror fans to theaters multiple times between now and Thanksgiving.
The “Hostel” director hasn’t touched his signature genre in almost a decade, but he’s been cooking up his latest film with writer Jeff Rendell since they were teenagers — and it’s more than worth the wait. The duo first realized their childhood concept of an eponymous “Thanksgiving” slasher as a fake trailer appearing in Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s “Grindhouse” in 2007. That cinematic morsel immediately stirred up cries for a full-blown adaptation, and for its annual re-watchers, the feature-length “Thanksgiving” is exactly what you’d expect.
Part “Thankskilling,” part “Scream,” this modern horror-comedy is a brilliant retrofitting of the moments you already know and love from the “Grindhouse” version (cheerleader trampoline stab!), serving up the original idea cranked to high heat...

Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone took to her X account (formerly Twitter) on Thursday to address the film’s potentially triggering scenes some Indigenous peoples may experience when watching the brutal Osage murders depicted on screen.
“The most pressing thing I’ve wanted to say about Killers of the Flower Moon, especially to Native Women & Youth: See it when and only if you feel ready, and see it with people you feel safe with,” Gladstone wrote. “You’ll likely have a lot of generational grief to process.

Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone shared a message of support and a trigger warning for Native viewers considering watching Martin Scorsese’s film.
The actress took to social media Thursday night to offer comfort and resources, particularly to young people and women, about the film that covers a brutal part of Native history. “See it when and only if you feel ready, and see it with people you feel safe with,” wrote Gladstone. “You’ll likely have a lot of generational grief to process. You’re not alone.”
In Killers of the Flower Moon, Scorsese is unsparing in his depiction of the horrific violence suffered by the Osage. “The severity of the killings is amplified by the contempt shown for the humanity of a deeply spiritual Indigenous American people, but also by the hypocrisy of the chief orchestrator of the precision-targeted, one-by-one genocide,” said The Hollywood Reporter‘s review of the film.

“Lawmen: Bass Reeves” is here.
The new series, produced by Taylor Sheridan, was created and largely written by showrunner Chad Feehan, who worked closely with the series’ producer and star David Oyelowo. Together, they brought the story of Reeves, an actual historical figure who was one of the first Black U.S. Marshals, to life. In the first two episodes alone, Reeves goes from being a slave serving in the Confederate army to living among the Native Americans and beyond. It’s quite the journey. And the show, as a production, is staggering in its complexity and scale.
TheWrap spoke to Feehan about how he became involved, whether or not it was ever really an “1883” spin-off, the comparisons between Reeves and the Lone Ranger and whether or not he has more stories left to tell with the character.

Westerns, if done right, are great to watch. There have been some great Western shows over the years that work fantastically well in the long format. In fact, the template of the Westerns has also been seen in shows like Breaking Bad and Westworld, where the story doesn’t seem to lend itself naturally to the genre. It is the landscape of the ‘Wild West’ that lends itself organically to long-form television, and there have been shows like Deadwood and Lonesome Dove to prove that point. With great writing, such a series can be more than a satisfying watch. Sometimes, they become some of the greatest shows ever. Lawmen: Bass Reeves, the latest Paramount+ original, stars David Oyelowo, Dennis Quaid, and Barry Pepper, among other stars, and it chronicles the life of the legendary officer Bass Reeves, who became the first African American Deputy U.S. Marshall. The Wild West...

Paramount+’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves episode one introduces David Oyelowo as the legendary lawman whose life was dedicated to protecting the peace in the Old West. Reeves was credited with arresting over 3,000 criminals while serving as a Deputy U.S. Marshal, and it’s not a stretch to believe he might have been one of the inspirations for The Lone Ranger.
Lawmen: Bass Reeves was created and written by Chad Feehan, based on the books Follow the Angels, Follow the Doves: The Bass Reeves Trilogy, Book One and Hell on the Border: The Bass Reeves Trilogy, Book Two by Sidney Thompson. Episode one focuses on the last days of Bass Reeves’ enslavement and the time he spent with the Seminoles, with David Oyelowo delivering a powerful performance as the runaway slave turned gunslinging lawman.

You might recognize Taylor Sheridan from his role as David Hale on "Sons of Anarchy" or Travis Wheatley in Paramount+'s "Yellowstone," but the actor's work on screen is arguably not as impressive as the stacked résumé of films and television shows that he has written.
Sheridan began acting in the 1990s and took on a number of small roles in various TV shows and movies throughout the remainder of the decade into the 2000s. But his career as an actor never quite took off, which is when he discovered his talent and passion for screenwriting. After writing the pilot for "Mayor of Kingstown" in 2011, he knew that's exactly what he was meant to do. "I was a fair actor, but that's all I was ever going to be," Sheridan told The Hollywood Reporter in a June 2023 interview. "Hollywood will tell you what you're supposed to do if you listen.

If life were a superhero movie, one of the major characters would be Ray Halbritter. That’s because the Oneida Indian Nation member has traveled a true superhero journey, using his connections and power not only to raise the visibility and elevate the prosperity of Native Americans, but to change the very culture of the country.
If that sounds like a heavy lift, consider Halbritter’s background, which contains elements of tragedy and triumph. He grew up in New York and New Jersey. Later, living on Native land and employed as an ironworker, he watched, heard and smelled as his aunt and uncle perished in a calamitous trailer home fire because city workers refused to set foot there.
It’s a part of his story that a screenwriter could have used to justify Halbritter’s role as either villain or hero. But this isn’t an origin story for Thanos or Bane.

“Killers of the Flower Moon,” the latest acclaimed epic drama from Martin Scorsese, is now in theaters, and the film’s star Leonardo DiCaprio is already an early favorite to receive a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his performance. In honor of the new movie from Apple Original Films, let’s look back at his seven Oscar nominations and talk about why DiCaprio finally won his first gold trophy at the 2016 Academy Awards for “The Revenant” (2015).
His first Oscar nomination came in the Best Supporting Actor category for “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (1993). DiCaprio’s only Academy Award nom of the 1990s put him up against older acting titans — Ralph Fiennes for “Schindler’s List,” John Malkovich for “In the Line of Fire,” Pete Postlethwaite for “In the Name of the Father” and Tommy Lee Jones, who won for his performance in “The Fugitive.” DiCaprio’s biggest hurtle that first time around...

The story of a Lakota Native American man torn between his ancestral home and a career in the big city inspired two U.S. filmmakers to invest 13 years into “Without Arrows.” Their doc, which is slated to premiere onscreen in December or early next year, was one of eight U.S.-made projects pitched at the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival this week as part of the New Visions Forum development program.
Alongside other upcoming creative docs on subjects ranging from a sci-fi take on the deadly effects of heat in Phoenix, Arizona (Lynne Siefert’s “Valley of the Night”) to Riley Hooper’s “Vestibule,” a look at the societal challenges faced by women with vulvar disorders, “Without Arrows” impressed Ji.hlava industry attendees with its compelling story.

‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and Why Native Stories Should Be Told by Native Filmmakers (Commentary)
Martin Scorsese is a master and his latest film, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” tells the story of the Osage murders of the 1920s. It’s an incredible piece of cinema in many ways, but Scorsese’s talent and craftsmanship can only take this story so far. At the end of the day, “Killers of the Flower Moon” captures a tragic chapter of Native American history on the Osage Nation involving Osage people, but is still told by white men, from the perspective of white men, instead of from Natives.
While this is arguably a positive step in the right direction — that this harrowing story was picked up by an iconic director who is giving it mainstream attention at all is noteworthy — the next step needs to be Native storytellers telling our stories and presenting them to global audiences with an equitable platform.

Reservation Dogs star Devery Jacobs is getting candid about her reaction to Martin Scorsese‘s buzzy new flick Killers of the Flower Moon, which examines the Osage murders that occurred in Oklahoma in the 1920s. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone as Ernest and Mollie Burkhart, a couple who is drawn together by sinister intentions as Ernest’s uncle William King Hill (Robert De Niro) pushes him to marry a Native American after returning to the States from the Great War. One by one, William, Ernest, and their fellow white Oklahomans begin eliminating the Osage Native Americans with the intent of inheriting their oil-based wealth. For Mollie, this includes her direct family, primarily her sisters who are targeted without remorse, alongside herself. When the FBI steps in to try and solve these murders, the dark conspiracy is brought to light. Jacobs took to social media about the film.

“Reservation Dogs” actress Devery Jacobs called out Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” on Monday, writing to X that the acclaimed film “painfully” underwrote its Indigenous characters as “helpless victims without agency” and in some ways helped normalize the brutalization of the Native American community.
She also expressed that she’d rather see a film made about Indigenous people’s history by a person who is of and from that racial and ethnic background.
“This film was painful, grueling, unrelenting and unnecessarily graphic,” Jacobs said. In a series of 15 tweets, the actress, best known for starring as Elora Danan Postoak on FX’s comedy “Reservation Dogs,” which is similarly centered on the Indigenous experience in the U.S., expressed the issues she had with “Killers,” which hit theaters Friday.
“Being Native, watching this movie was f–king hellfire,” Jacobs began. “Imagine the worst atrocities committed against your ancestors,...

What does it take to heal while you’re still surrounded by the descendants of those who committed a century-old communal betrayal? The vibrant, thriving Greenwood section of Tulsa, Oklahoma had set up an economy so strong and affluent that it was called Black Wall Street. That was until it posed a threat to the white population who, in an act of racialized vengeance a century ago, left the streets strewn with charred rubble and the bodies of its African American residents.
Just an hour west and beginning around the same time, a sinister darkness had cast its shadow over Osage County and the Osage tribe whose members became among the country’s wealthiest citizens when land they were assigned turned out to have vast pockets of oil. White locals and outsiders attached themselves to the tribe’s members looking for ways to steal the tribe’s wealth.

Recent docs on Indigenous peoples in the United States emphasize the troubled, tragic legacy between Native Americans and the US government, like “Lakota Nation Vs. United States.” Others, like Showtime‘s “Murder In Big Horn,” chart ongoing issues like the murdered and missing indigenous women crisis and the media and government’s relative neglect to take it seriously.

Based on David Grann’s best-selling crime thriller, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon tells the real-life mystery of the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma in the 1920s, who became wealthy after oil was discovered beneath their land. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off, and the ensuing spiral of conspiracy, greed and murder got so bad that the FBI had to step in. It’s a sprawling story with a nearly three-and-a-half-hour runtime, and Martin Scorsese looked to the films of Ari Aster for influence on its pacing.
“I very much like the style and pacing of good horror films like Ari Aster’s Midsommar or Beau Is Afraid,” Martin Scorsese told The Irish Times. “The pacing of those films goes back to the B films of Val Lewton, Jacques Tourneur’s Cat People or I Walked With a Zombie. Just going a little slower.

Episode 5 of John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams is about the cursed neighborhood of Charles County, Maryland. Carlette Norwood fell in love with Brian and dreamt of settling with him in the neighborhood of Charles County, but the dream soon turned into a nightmare. Carlette and her daughter were interviewed by the filmmakers, reminiscing about those sweet and serene moments with their family, while they also shed tears remembering the tragedy that struck them. This episode is quite a bit more emotional and well-executed than the previous episodes.
Spoilers Ahead
What Is The History Of Charles County, Maryland?
Episode 5, titled The Cursed Neighborhood, opened with the centuries-old historical tale of Charles County, Maryland, in 1682. It was the land of the Native Americans, the Algonquin tribe, who lived in the northeastern part of North America. The director brought in Chief Standing Bear as a consultant on Killers of the Flower Moon. When they met, Scorsese made it clear that the crime drama would not be an insensitive Hollywood portrayal of Native Americans
Geoffrey Standing Bear, chief of the Osage Nation, is about to get changed into his tuxedo, bow tie and traditional blanket for the London premiere of Killers of the Flower Moon. This will be the fifth time he’s seeing the three-and-a-half-hour movie, he says. “You need to see it more than once to get the depth.” Mind you, the second time, at the Cannes film festival, he couldn’t really pay attention. “It was hard to concentrate on the film because I was always looking at famous people,” he says, laughing. Like who? “I saw Cate Blanchett, you know, who played Galadriel [in The Lord of the Rings movies]. She was right there.

Ahead of Scorsese’s Osage Nation epic hitting cinemas this month, we look at the evolution of Indigenous life in film and TV, from The Searchers to Reservation Dogs
Martin Scorsese’s rather magnificent Killers of the Flower Moon is two weeks away from cinemas, and its marketing campaign has been fascinating to observe. What was initially pitched as a Leonardo DiCaprio-starring period crime epic has been repositioned to emphasise its story of atrocities brought against the Osage Nation. The presence of Lily Gladstone, the film’s superb Indigenous star, has been elevated. It was recently announced that she’ll campaign for the best actress Oscar, not supporting, while Scorsese has admitted that the script was rewritten during filming to centre its Native American characters: “After a certain point, I realised I was making a movie about all the white guys,” he told Time magazine. No more.

That wasn't kind, making everyone think Ness was returning to work and celebrating her passing the bar, only to find she was in the ICU.
Amy, Sara, and Lola took turns praying by Ness's bedside, believing their fierce friend would survive.
Look at me, Dr. Rios. This is Vanessa Johnson, but you can call her Ness. She just passed the bat. She is funny, she’s tenacious, and she’s going to make one hell of a lawyer one day because she is a fighter, and she’s fighting right now with everything she has. I need you to do the same.

What’s fair concerning building property on sacred Native American ground?
That’s the controversial topic that the series covers in All Rise Season 3 Episode 11 when it returns on Saturday, September 16, from its year-long hiatus.
Mark and Luke are on opposite sides of this high-profile case, and TV Fanatic received an exclusive clip of Judge Carmichael, Judge Benner, and Judge Marshall debating the case.
All Rise has taken advantage of its move to OWN to delve into even more controversial topics and the character’s personal feelings.
As you’ll see in this clip, the judges have opposing views on whether Judge Carmichael should allow the land history into her case as part of the defense.
You’ve got to love Lola defending the Native Americans and reminding Judge Marshall that even though they weren’t aware of land ownership laws years ago, that doesn’t mean they don’t have rights now.

Pedro Almodovar believes Hollywood bosses need to hire more "minorities" to write movies. The Spanish filmmaker doesn't agree that only gay or Jewish actors should play gay or Jewish characters and thinks the best way to promote true diversity in the film industry is by having authentic voices bring their experiences to the story. He told The Hollywood Reporter magazine: "The essence of acting is, in fact, to pretend, to be someone other than who you are, even in your own essence. That is at the core of acting."So, for example, absolutely a heterosexual actor can play a homosexual character and vice versa."If Hollywood is so obsessed, as it is right now, with representing minorities, be they Latinos, Asians or people with disabilities, they should actually hire them to do the writing. "Just so I’m not misunderstood, I want to make sure that it is clear that...
