Former President Barack Obama slammed Donald Trump for a lack of “seriousness.”
Obama joined Joe Biden and Bill Clinton during an episode of the Smartless podcast to criticize Trump’s behavior.
Actor Jason Bateman, one of the podcast’s hosts, asked Obama if he was surprised “how quickly that protection and passion for democracy was diluted” and “how primed the country was to just sort of dissolve and – and get lazy with it and let it go.”
“You know, I will say – and Bill saw this begin to happen during his presidency – it then accelerated during my presidency – I have been surprised that there haven’t been guard rails inside the Republican Party,” Obama replied.
“Trump didn’t surprise me, no,” he added. “You watch Trump’s campaign, you watch his career. If you know anybody who’s a—I mean, he comes from New York, there’s nobody in...

Today's intel is a bit of a mixed bag for fans of The Conners.
After months of cancelation rumors, the long-running Roseanne spinoff has been renewed for a seventh season.
That's the good news.
The bad news is that the show will be coming to an end for good.
And it will do so with a dramatically reduced episode count.
According to a report from Deadline, producers were able to work out a deal with ABC wherein the show will be extended so that it can offer viewers a proper conclusion.
Unfortunately, that conclusion will unfold over just six episodes.
Again, it could've been worse, as there were fears that The Conners would be unceremoniously kicked to the curb at the end of its current season.
The situation was so dire that a tag scene was shot for the upcoming season finale that would end the story in a satisfactory way,...

Eric Trump suggested that Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama would be prosecuted if the Supreme Court decides that presidents are not immune to criminal prosecution.
“The Supreme Court is now weighing this monumental case on whether or not president [Donald] Trump has immunity from prosecution,” host Maria Bartiromo told Eric during an interview on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures.
“We saw some of the hearing this week,” Bartiromo stated in reference to last week’s oral arguments, during which the high court considered Trump’s claim that his official acts should not be subject to federal prosecution. “It felt like listening to some of those Supreme Court justices—that they were willing to admit to some or acknowledge some immunity.”
She asked Eric, “What did you take away from what you heard from the Supreme Court this week, and when do you expect a decision?”
“Well, God help us if they get it wrong,...

Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas) has been demoted by the Navy in light of a damning report from the Defense Department watchdog that exposed his inappropriate conduct, which included drinking on the job, frequent outbursts directed at subordinates and further unprofessional behavior.
Jackson retired on December 1, 2019.
Jackson, a retired one-star rear admiral who served as the top White House physician under Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump, has been demoted to the rank of captain.
Commander Jacqueline Pau, a Navy spokeswoman, said, “The substantiated allegations in the DoDIG investigation of Rear Adm (lower half) Ronny Jackson are not in keeping with the standards the Navy requires of its leaders and, as such, the Secretary of the Navy took administrative action in July 2022.”
Upon the release of the Pentagon Inspector General’s report in March 2021, Jackson dismissed it as a politically motivated attack, telling reporters that Democrats were “using this report to...

Joe Biden delivered a fiery State of the Union address Thursday night, made the case for American democracy, reproductive freedom, funding for Ukraine, a fair tax code, and lowering prescription drug prices. He also repeatedly underscored the threat of Donald Trump — whom he referred to only as “my predecessor.”

The 2021 Oscars was the first time a front-facing ramp was an integrated element of the Academy Awards’ custom-built stage. Academy member Jim LeBrecht, who uses a wheelchair, initiated the effort and executed it alongside his Crip Camp co-director Nicole Newnham and executive producer Howard Gertler after an Oscar nomination for the Obama-produced Netflix doc seemed on the horizon.
The ramp, present for years at disability-focused ceremonies like the Media Access Awards, marked a visible shift for mainstream Hollywood’s focus in the diversity, equity and inclusion space. And it would spark similar efforts — sometimes piecemeal or sweeping, other times fumbled — at other major industry events such as the Emmys and Grammys.
Since then, the Oscars have expanded their accessibility efforts. The 2024 show, which takes place this Sunday, will include confidential accessibility requests for all nominees and guests; captioning services (live captions through in-house monitors, captions for video packages and...

The office of Former First Lady Michelle Obama has declared that she has no plans to run for president in this year’s election.
On March 5, Obama’s office ended talks of her possible run for president in a bid to silence frequent speculation and wishful thinking about her taking the Democratic nomination from President Joe Biden.
“As former first lady Michelle Obama has expressed several times over the years, she will not be running for president,” Crystal Carson, the communications director of the former first lady’s office, declared in a statement. “Mrs. Obama supports President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris‘ re-election campaign.”
This statement comes after Republicans like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy publicly encouraged the idea that Obama could replace Biden on the ballot.
Many Republicans and conservative commentators fueled speculation that Obama could come in at the last minute,...

The decision means a high-profile trial will be further delayed, possibly for multiple months — if it even takes place at all. The court will begin hearing oral arguments on April 22.

All late-night hosts hope to take their programs to new heights, but “The Tonight Show’s” Jimmy Fallon may not have expected to have to do so on his very first night behind the desk.
As evening approached on the night of February 17, 2014, Fallon found himself hustling up elevators to get to a rooftop at NBC’s 30 Rockefeller Plaza headquarters where U2 was set to perform. Lorne Michaels, the “SNL” executive producer who also has a hand in overseeing “Tonight,” felt the band would look best framed against the dusk, not a dark night sky. So Fallon, having just finished a bit in which celebrities like Robert De Niro and Joan Rivers paid him $100 after betting he wouldn’t get the “Tonight” job, was scrambling to get upstairs before his crew lost the light.

The Beatles‘ “Michelle” is not a provocative song. However, Paul McCartney joked that President Barack Obama might hit him when he performed the tune in front of Michelle Obama. The “Say Say Say” singer revealed what he thought when he performed the track. Notably, “Michelle” was not a hit in the United States or the United Kingdom.
Paul McCartney relaxed when he played The Beatles’ ‘Michelle’ for the Obamas
In 2010, Paul performed for the Obamas at the White House. He joked that the then-president might punch him for performing “Michelle,” a love song about a woman named Michelle. Considering the first lady was right there, the joke became one of the most memorable moments of Paul’s set. It harkened back to the dry jokes that The Beatles would make during interviews in the 1960s.
During a 2010 interview with The Repository, Paul discussed the comment. “It was such a nice,...

There was something perhaps apt about Joe Biden’s appearance on “Late Night With Seth Meyers” Monday night being pegged to the show’s 10th anniversary; as Vice President, in 2014, Biden had appeared on the show’s first broadcast, and now he marked the passage of a decade. It was a booking that made sense, but that also called attention to Biden’s most crucial liability in 2024 — the fact that time has passed.
Questions about Biden’s age and acuity have intensified in recent months, even as — as the man himself pointed out on Meyers’ couch — his likely opponent in the November election, Donald Trump, is of comparable age. Appearing for an interview with Meyers after a presidency defined, especially in recent months, by a press-shy approach, Biden was stronger on questions of politics than on television entertainment.

In an extraordinary, historic moment, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder performed “Ebony and Ivory” at the White House together for President Barack Obama. Paul revealed what it was like to sing that song for the president. He also revealed what he thought of Obama as a human being.
Paul McCartney loved singing ‘Ebony and Ivory’ for President Obama
In 2010, Obama awarded the “Silly Love Songs” singer the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, an award that is usually reserved for American musicians. During a 2010 interview with The Repository, Paul discussed performing at the White House when he received the award. “One of the highs was singing ‘Ebony and Ivory’ with Stevie because we’d never done it live together, so that was great,” he said.
“To sing it live together for the very first time with the first Black president there, it suddenly gave a great significance to the song,” Paul continued.

Hill Harper, running for an open U.S. Senate seat in Michigan, returned to Los Angeles earlier this month, where the actor headlined a fundraiser co-hosted by John Legend, as well as other figures including Vivica A. Fox and Mike Tollin.
The event was a needed boost to the actor and activist’s campaign: In the Democratic primary race, Harper is facing Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-mi), who has a wide lead in polls and in her campaign war chest. She had more than $6 million cash on hand as of the end of last year, dwarfing that of her rivals. Get to your bunker and stay away from those Teslas, because we’re apparently living in the opening act of Netflix’s Leave the World Behind.
A nationwide cellphone outage struck the United States on Thursday morning and impacted more than 70,000 customers. The issue apparently started with AT&T’s network, but has affected customers who use Verizon and T-Mobile as well (during their attempts to connect to AT&T users). The problem is serious — it has impacted emergency services such as 911. While the reason for the outage has not yet been revealed, there’s no indication it was due to an intentional or malicious act.
Still, everyone is seemingly making the same reference: Netflix’s recent apocalyptic disaster movie, Leave the World Behind, starring Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali and Ethan Hawke, which opens with all communications going down after satellites get disabled in an apparent cyber attack. According to leading bookmakers, Michelle Obama is the frontrunner to replace Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee in the event that Biden steps down before the 2024 election. Although the former first lady has not indicated an interest in a White House bid, betting company Betfair currently offers odds of 8/1 (11 percent) on Michelle Obama as the most likely alternative to Biden.
Betfair’s odds reflect growing concerns about Biden’s health, exacerbated by recent gaffes, which have sparked speculation about the possibility of him withdrawing from the race. While Biden has secured victories in Democratic primaries in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada, his challengers within the party remain on the fringe.
Sam Rosbottom, a spokesperson for Betfair, acknowledged that doubts about Biden’s mental acuity have influenced some bettors to place their money on other potential candidates. Rosbottom noted that four years ago, at the start of the primary season,...

In The Heirloom, a couple facing lockdown decide to adopt a pet. It’s wintertime in Toronto, and Eric and Allie are chipping away at their Covid-restricted lives. Eric, a screenwriter, has hit a block. Together they goof around until Allie eventually asks the eternal question: why don’t we get a dog? Heirloom is the first feature of Ben Petrie, who is credited as director, editor, writer, and producer. He also stars in the film alongside his longtime creative partner Grace Glowicki, who also co-produced it––making The Heirloom not quite a Petrie-dish. What’s more, they have to share the screen with Milly, an auburn whippet rescue dog from the Dominican Republic whose cautious eyes and darting movements often steal the show.
Much like Milly, Petrie’s film works itself into a charmingly anxious mood. With few distractions, and some reason to procrastinate, Eric and Allie begin obsessing.

Ask anyone who works in the fashion industry, and they’ll be quick to tell you it’s a competitive, sometimes brutal business — and they wouldn’t dream of doing anything else. Another truism: The creatives behind it outwardly seem to possess spines made of steel, and yet every element of their soul will go into a collection.
That was undeniably true on the first day of New York Fashion Week, when Prabal Gurung presented a wholly poetic Fall Winter 2024 collection inspired by personal loss. An interview with the U.S. President in the hours before the Super Bowl has become a tradition in recent decades. Now that custom seems to be in danger of dying out.
President Joe Biden will not take part in an exchange during the pre-game festivities leading up to CBS’ broadcast of Super Bowl Lviii on February 11, CBS News confirmed. The Paramount Global news operation had been in discussions with the White House in recent weeks. Details about which correspondent might have been eyed for the assignment could not be learned, but the CBS News offer was believed to have been for a 15-minute interview, three or four minutes of which would have aired during the network’s pre-game coverage.
This will mark the second year in a row that President Biden has turned down the opportunity, which typically draws an audience of tens of millions, even in the hours before kickoff.

The African American Film Critics Association, representing the largest group of Black film critics globally, said Friday it has partnered with Delta Air Lines to curate a collection of films that celebrate Black History Month.

Malia Obama, 25, daughter of former President Barack Obama, just made her debut at the Sundance Film Festival with her short film The Heart.
Malia released her 18-minute short film at the festival. She is making a name for herself that goes beyond her title as former first daughter.
Malia is no stranger to the art of film production. She studied visual and environmental studies at Harvard University in addition to an internship with the Weinstein Company in 2017. After finishing her degree, she worked as a writer for an Amazon series titled Swarm. This show was created by Donald Glover, who also helped produce Obama’s short film.
“The first thing we did was talk about the fact that she will only get to do this once,” Glover told GQ about the production of the short. “You’re Obama’s daughter. So if you make a bad film, it will follow you around.

Chita Rivera, the beloved Broadway star of West Side Story, Chicago and Kiss of the Spider Woman, died today in New York following a brief illness. She was 91.
Her death was announced by her daughter, Lisa Mordente, who said that Rivera died peacefully.
One of America’s foremost Latina artists, Rivera was a groundbreaker, riveting critics and audiences alike with seminal performances of such soon-to-be Broadway standards as “America” and “A Boy Like That” from West Side Story and “All That Jazz” from Chicago. She was among the most nominated performers in Tony Award history – she earned 10 nominations, winning twice (for The Rink and Kiss of the Spider Woman) and receiving the 2018 Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.
Rivera rocketed to fame in 1953 with Guys and Dolls, then cemented her stature as a Broadway leading lady in 1954 with Can-Can, Mr. Wonderful in 1956 and, in 1957, the role that...

When Roseanne premiered in 1988, the ABC series offered viewers a bold new take on the traditional family sitcom.
In the era of Full House, The Cosby Show, and Growing Pains, the Conners reminded Americans that not all households are filled with affluent parents imparting valuable life lessons to their grateful, obedient children.
The Simpsons often receives the lion's share of the credit for expanding our notion of what a sitcom family could look like.
But it's worth noting that Roseanne beat Homer and company to the punch when it came to mining comedic gold out of suburban dysfunction.
The show was a critical success right out of the gate, and over the course of its nine-season run, it developed into a reliable ratings juggernaut.
In its second season, Roseanne stunned skeptics by knocking The Cosby Show out of the top spot on the Nielsen charts.

The sun is setting on the 2024 installment of the Sundance Film Festival, closing out a milestone 40th edition and leaving many headlines in its wake. Those included a whopping $17 million Netflix acquisition for a buzzy directorial debut, a pro-Palestine protest that shut down Main Street, a Sundance debut for a former first daughter, and the rise of standing ovations across Park City. If you weren’t able to make it out to the mountain, The Hollywood Reporter has rounded up what you missed.

Malia Obama stepped onto a red carpet last week for the first time, with good reason. The former first daughter hit Park City for the Sundance Film Festival premiere of her short film The Heart, an 18-minute directorial debut that snagged a spot in the U.S. short fiction films program of the 2024 edition. The premiere screening happened on the fest’s opening day, Jan. 18, and screened two more times over the weekend. The budding filmmaker, who participated in all post-screening Q&As to discuss her work, also took time out of her busy schedule to screen the film and speak with a group of students at Park City High School about all things creative from writing to directing.
Malia Obama attended The Heart premiere and posed with her actors and short-film collaborators.
It wasn’t all work and no play for the 25-year-old daughter of Barack and Michelle Obama.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Rustin, Netflix’s biopic of civil rights icon Bayard Rustin. Colman Domingo stars in the film, which is directed by Tony winner George C. Wolfe and hit theaters and the streamer in November after its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival.
The screenplay co-written by Julian Breece and Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black focuses on one of the main architects of the 1963 March on Washington, where more than 200,000 hear Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech on the National Mall. Rustin was a fulcrum in the civil rights movement, working alongside the likes of King, Adam Clayton Powell Jr and Ella Baker, though as an openly gay man in that era he often had to work behind the scenes. He challenged authority and never apologized for who he was or what he believed.

That’s why many A-List Hollywood stars pulled up sticks in the mid-20th century, moving from Palm Springs — and L.A. — to the more discreet Rancho Mirage, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary as a city this year.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and owner of X (formerly Twitter) says his opposition to President Biden in his re-election bid is mainly due to his bitterness over a White House snub in 2021.
During a 90-minute appearance at the New York Times DealBook Summit, Musk’s profane taunts of advertisers made headlines, but his views on Biden also were noteworthy given his vast resources and influence.
Musk said his issue with Biden can be traced back to the White House excluding Tesla from an event on electric vehicles it hosted a few months after Biden took office. The president also later added “insult to injury” by praising General Motors as the company leading the “electric car revolution,” the exec recalled.
“Without doing anything to provoke the Biden administration, they held an electrical vehicle summit at the White House and specifically refused to let Tesla attend,” Musk said. “This was in...

And worse? An aggrieved Black woman, who arrives at the center of the controversy through no fault of her own, has to shoulder a large portion of the work to make things right.

Longtime SportsCenter anchor Sage Steele is speaking out after announcing that she was leaving ESPN after settling her lawsuit against the network and Disney.
“All I ever wanted was consistency,” Steele told Megyn Kelly in an interview Thursday on SiriusXM’s The Megan Kelly Show.
Steele sued ESPN and corporate parent Disney in April 2022 for allegedly violating both her contract ad free speech rights. In the lawsuit, Steele alleged she had been “sidelined” by the network in 2021 after she made controversial remarks about ESPN’s Covid policy and former President Barack Obama’s ethnic identity, questioning the fact the Obama identifies as Black, given the circumstances of his upbringing.
Kelly pointed to several instances where several of Steele’s fellow ESPN colleagues spoke out on controversial political issues without repercussion. Steele reminded that she made her comments on a podcast, not on-the-air on ESPN, on her personal time.

Avant, inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, died Sunday at his home in Los Angeles, according to a family statement released Monday.
Avant’s achievements were both public and behind the scenes, as a name in the credits, or a name behind the names. Barack Obama paid tribute to his late White House and personal chef Tafari Campbell.
The former president shared a post including two photos of Campbell. The first photo was a group picture of Obama, Campbell and Campbell’s wife Sharise Campbell.

Obama wrote, “Tafari Campbell showed us what true character looks like. He believed that actions speak louder than words. And he used his immense gifts to bring people together, provide comfort, and spread joy. I’ll miss him every day.”
Tafari died on July 24 due to a paddleboarding accident near the Obamas’ home in Martha’s Vineyard. His body was recovered by officers after a 911 call resulted in a search for him on July 23. The caller told officers that there was “a male paddle boarder who had gone into the water,...
The former president shared a post including two photos of Campbell. The first photo was a group picture of Obama, Campbell and Campbell’s wife Sharise Campbell.

Donald Trump promised on Tuesday that even if Judge Tanya Chutkan grants the Justice Department a protective order preventing him from “publicly targeting individuals” related to his 2020 election meddling case — he’s gonna to keep talkin’ shit.
While speaking at a campaign event in New Hampshire, the former president told the crowd that prosecutors were attempting to take away his First Amendment rights through the protective order.
“Crooked Joe now wants the thug prosecutor, this deranged guy, to file a court order taking away my First Amendment rights so that I can’t speak…...

Since the TV academy officially established a distinction between informational and documentary programs in 2013, the former genre’s Emmy category – which eventually became known as Best Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special – has been dominated by multi-winners Anthony Bourdain, Leah Remini, and Stanley Tucci. As the presenter and co-executive producer of “Searching for Italy” (which is in need of a home after being dropped by CNN), Tucci is currently seeking his third consecutive win in the category along with an even mix of old and new co-nominees.

This means that the five programs in the 2023 lineup are not vying for a single trophy and could all potentially prevail. However, given the fact...

Last year’s Best Narrator Emmy contest was a real clash of the titans as three-time champion David Attenborough (“The Mating Game”) attempted to fend off famously charismatic first-timer Barack Obama (“Our Great National Parks”). Now that the former U.S. president has one victory under his belt, he is immediately seeking a second for another Netflix series, “Working: What We Do All Day.” This time, he faces an entirely different slate of challengers who could very well make this outing even more difficult.
Those competing against Obama for the 2023 narration prize are returning nominees Angela Bassett (“Good Night Oppy”) and Morgan Freeman (“Our Universe”) and category newcomers Mahershala Ali (“Chimp Empire”) and Pedro Pascal (“Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World”). Collectively, the professional actors have previously vied for 14 Emmys across 10 categories.
