Artists were first to sue. Then authors hit generative artificial intelligence companies with a volley of lawsuits, followed by publications. As battle lines over the use of AI tools in Hollywood are being drawn, actors may be the next group of creators to open another front in what could be an industry-defining legal battle against AI firms over the use of copyrighted works and personal data to power their human-mimicking chatbots.
On Monday, Scarlett Johansson threatened legal action against OpenAI for allegedly copying and imitating her voice after she refused to license it to the company. According to the actress, OpenAI asked her to be one of the voices called “Sky” for its newest AI system. She declined, though she said that didn’t stop chief executive Sam Altman.

On Monday night, pedestrians walking along New York City’s Park Avenue stopped in their tracks as they noticed unusually well-dressed dogs posing on a red carpet outside Akc’s Museum of the Dog. Staring at the spectacle, they brandished their phones to capture the moment as they wondered aloud what was transpiring.

Actors’ Equity Association has voted to authorize a strike against the Broadway League amid negotiations over developmental work.
The strike authorization vote, which was agreed to unanimously by the union’s 83-member national council, does not mean the union will go on strike, but rather that Equity can call a strike if deemed necessary. The union went on a 33-day strike in 2019 over this contract, which pertains to workshops and readings of shows held before potential full productions on Broadway or elsewhere.
At the end of the 2019 strike, which saw stage managers and actors refuse to take part in developmental work, union members who take part in the development of a production gained a share in 1 percent of the show’s profits, once the show goes on to a full production and recoups, as well as a salary increase.

Annette Bening, who was to have received the Golden Medallion for significant contribution to the world of cinema at September’s Telluride Film Festival — where the latest film in which the veteran actress stars, Jimmy Chin and Chai Vasarhelyi’s Diana Nyad biopic Nyad, had its world premiere — but who was unable to attend the fest due to the actors strike, will be presented with the honor at a special event in Los Angeles on Saturday, Jan. 6, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The Bening tribute will include a career-retrospective conversation, interspersed with clips, moderated by her Nyad co-star Jodie Foster, and a presentation of the award by Meg Ryan.
This marks the first time that Telluride has presented an honor outside of the dates of its festival.
“Annette Bening has long deserved a tribute in Telluride — and everywhere else on the planet,” Telluride Film Festival executive director Julie Huntsinger said in a statement.

Rtl Group is selling its Dutch business Rtl Nederland for €1.1B ($1.2B) in cash.
Dpg Media, a European operation with bases in Benelux and Denmark, has reached an agreement with Rtl to acquire the business, which comprises a family of free-tv and pay-tv networks and popular streaming service Videoland.
The all-cash transaction is expected to close in mid-2024, subject to regulatory approvals.
Rtl had previously attempted to merge its Dutch assets with John de Mol’s Talpa Network, but this was stopped by regulators on competition grounds. Today’s deals ties into the European giant’s belief that major networks on the continent need to either merge or strategically partner to compete with global streamers.
As such, part of the agreement sees Rtl and Dpg enter into a strategic partnership that spans technology, ad sales and content.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Homicide: Life On The Street actor André Braugher died from lung cancer a few months after he was diagnosed with the disease, his representative confirmed to Deadline Thursday.
The 61-year-old died Monday. At the time his representative said the actor had died from a brief illness.
The two-time Emmy winning Braugher was perhaps best known his lead role Det. Frank Pembleton on David Simon’s dark police drama Homicide: Life On The Street, which focused on the homicide unit of the Baltimore Police Department. It ran for seven seasons on NBC.
In a statement Tuesday, NBC Entertainment remembered Braugher as an “actor that others in the profession would always aspire to be.”
“In addition to his prowess as a dramatic actor, his comedy chops were also on full display as the determined and passionate Capt. Holt in ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine.’ We will miss him tremendously,” the statement read.

Iconic, multi-Oscar-winning film “La La Land” is headed back to mainland Chinese cinemas in sessions that dance off on Dec. 22.
The worldwide release is overseen by Lionsgate release, while the China re-release is to be piloted by local distributor Jl Film.
The film was directed by Damien Chazelle and stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. It holds the box office record for movie musicals with global box office of $470 million and earned $35 million of that in China.
For some Chinese audiences, re-releasing the film on its seventh anniversary has superstitious significance because seven years symbolizes sticking together for a lifetime.

Hollywood dealmaking is becoming more reliant on the international market. That’s the word from production execs from Universal International Studios, Fremantle, Anonymous Content and Studiocanal talking on an Asia TV Forum & Market panel in Singapore today.
The execs discussed dealmaking and how the expansion of streamers into international markets have impacted local ecosystems in regions such as Asia-Pacific.
“I’m really interested in companies that are coming up prominently in the region and sometimes partnering them up with our labels across the world,” said Mandy Chang, Head of Global Documentaries at Fremantle. “I’ve been involved in a lot of Asian co-productions but actually I’m looking to work with bigger companies rather than individual producers and directors.”
She added that the ability to port talent overseas to fulfil demand could help productions gain access to greater range of funding and fill content gaps in different markets.

Rupert Murdoch is finally — allegedly — slowing down, marking his final day Wednesday as Executive Chairman of News Corp. by praising his son Lachlan, who is taking over his role as company leader.
Rupert Murdoch, age 92, vowed he will still play an active role as he becomes Chairman Emeritus of News Corp. and Fox Corporation, the latter where he is scheduled to meet shareholders on Friday in his final act as chairman.
Lachlan Murdoch is 52 and now becomes the sole chairman of both companies.
“Lachlan is a principled leader, and a believer in the social purpose of journalism. I hope to continue an active role in the company,” Rupert Murdoch said on Wednesday at the News Corp. farewell.
Rupert Murdoch talked about the “opportunities and challenges” of artificial intelligence in his Wednesday remarks. He also spoke of Wall St. Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who remains detained in Russia.

The newest surprise at Fox’s “Masked Singer” isn’t tied to an appearance by a mysterious celebrity.
On Wednesday night, the popular reality-competition program will bring an advertiser into its format for the first time since launching in 2019. From the opening shot to the end of the contest, “Singer” will utilize characters and other trappings from Universal’s new “Trolls Band Together” movie, slated to open on Friday. “Singer” panelist Ken Jeong will even be spotted wearing a colored wig to make himself look more like one of the creatures in the animated film.
Some TV observers might be astonished to learn that the series is accommodating an advertiser at all. Unlike predecessors such as “The Voice” and “American Idol,” “Singer” has never indulged in on-screen product placements from sponsors such as Coca-Cola, Ford or Starbucks.

CBS News will launch a fact-checking unit to examine misinformation and content generated via artificial intelligence, the network announced Monday.
The unit will be called “CBS News Confirmed” and will be led by senior vice president for CBS News and Stations Claudia Milne, and executive vice president and head of news operations and transformation for CBS News and Stations Ross Dagan.

“I’m grateful to our leadership team who has committed to this effort and is always looking to protect and ensure our journalistic credibility,” McMahon said.
The goal of the new unit is to produce segments on its findings while explaining to viewers how the information was determined to be falsified.

Prince William and Kate Middleton are going on 13 years of marriage. Yes, 13 years. Back when they became engaged in 2010, even the now-King Charles III cracked a joke about the couple dating for so long before heading for the altar. What the king said about how the Prince and Princess of Wales’s engagement made him “feel.” Plus, why a royal expert considers the years William and Kate’s spent dating a good thing for them and the British royal family.
William and Kate announced their engagement in November 2010 after nearly 10 years together
On Nov. 16, 2010, William and Kate let the world in on their recently changed relationship status: engaged. The pair posed for cameras at St. James’s Palace after Clarence House made the official announcement.
The late Princess Diana’s diamond and sapphire ring now sat on Kate’s finger after William proposed on a vacation in Kenya just weeks before.

Speaking with Wall Street analysts on Thursday, Paramount executives confirmed the coming months would see a price hike for Paramount+ users.
Last quarter was a good one for Paramount+. On the heels of a price increase that saw its ad-free tier rise in cost to $11.99 per month and its ad-supported plan jump to $5.99 when Paramount+ integrated Showtime in June, the service gained 2.7 million new subscribers in the third quarter.
Paramount executives confirmed again on Thursday that they saw room to raise Paramount+ prices further. The company’s last price increase led to fewer cancelations than forecast. Rules against password sharing are not expected in the near future, however, as the company does not see sharing users as a meaningful profit drain. Save $20 Now $5.99+ / month paramountplus.com

Gearing up for the holidays, Disney+ series “The Santa Clauses” has dropped the trailer for its second season.
Set after the events of “The Santa Clause” films, the Christmas television series has Tim Allen reprising his role as Scott Calvin/Santa, who decides to retire from the “Santa” position in season one and find a new replacement. However, the end of the first season saw Scott fail to find an individual worthy of the “Santa” title. This time around, Scott is determined to train his son, Cal (Austin Kane), to be the perfect Santa successor.
“The best part of Christmas is spending time with your loved ones,” Scott says in the new trailer. “Which is why I’m so geeked to turn Santa into a family business.”
All doesn’t go smoothly for the Calvin family, though, and there’s a new “Mad Santa” (Eric Stonestreet) who was previously exiled...

Major construction work along Cannes’ famed Croisette has turned this most glamorous of French seaside towns into a chaotic building site. Television executives, in town for the MIPCOM Cannes international TV confab, which runs through Thursday, Oct. 19, have been forced to run a gauntlet of concrete slabs and roped-off danger zones.
It’s an apt metaphor for the mood at MIPCOM this year. A conflagration of factors — the actors strike, rising inflation, a slump in the advertising market, and a pull-back in investment by the global streamers — have combined to weaken the foundations of the international TV business. Executives are treading carefully as if in fear the whole structure could collapse under their feet.
“There’s a lot of fear out there, a lot of companies are worried they might not be around in six, 12, 18 months,” said one MIPCOM veteran, the CEO of a mid-sized European production and distribution company.

Brian Doherty, a veteran of the CW’s ad-sales department who was instrumental in developing ties between Madison Avenue and series such as “Arrow” and “Gossip Girl,” is leaving — the latest in a parade of TV sales veterans to exit as the industry consolidates and new owners take control of various properties.
Doherty, who has been with the CW or its predecessor, the WB, since 1999, had been serving as executive vice president of multi-platform advertising sales, reporting to Todd Braverman, recently a senior executive at Warner Bros. Discovery’s cable networks, who is now head of national ad sales for CW. Doherty is expected to depart on November 1, according to a memo sent by Braverman to staffers Monday.
CW, previously owned jointly by Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global, was purchased by Nexstar Media in 2022. Other senior ad sales executives, including Rob Tuck and Barbra Robin, have also departed. Since Nexstar took over management,...

National Geographic has greenlit a new docuseries that will go inside one of the U.S. Navy’s most demanding training and selection programs.
“Top Gun: The Next Generation” (working title) will follow a diverse group of student pilots as they train to become fighter pilots in the Advanced Flight Training Program. The group will embark on some of the most challenging flight tests, including landing on an aircraft carrier at sea.
“The elite nature of the course means that only a minority – the very best – will make it to the top to fly the world’s most advanced jet – the F-35C Lightning II,” the network said in a news release. “This first-time access will allow the series to follow the prospective naval aviators every step of the way – in the air, in the classroom, off-base and at home – as we discover who’s got what it takes to make it to the F-35C.
