When it comes to the mythology of "Star Wars," fans might find that there is more knowledge and detail in expanded universe lore than there is on the screen. Darth Vader's suit, for instance, might merely look like an intimidating life-support system at first glance, and audiences can rightly interpret his mask as the respirator that keeps his lungs functioning. The black, swooping helmet he wears was simply part of an Empire uniform, meant to evoke helmets worn by Nazi soldiers during World War II. What did Darth Vader look like under the mask? In 1977, no one knew. The buttons and panels on Darth Vader's chest clearly fulfilled some sort of medical or engineering function, but audiences would never be told explicitly what they did in any of the "Star Wars" movies.
Of course, thanks to extensive expanded-universe lore, various technical sourcebooks, and endless tie-in novels, Starwoids now know...

Fire sparked by a lightning strike has destroyed an Alabama prop house used in Tim Burton’s 2003 movie Big Fish.
“We lost a house in the Town of Spectre tonight after a lightning strike,” reads a post on Jackson Lake Island’s Facebook page.
The house was located on Jackson Lake Island in the fictitious town of Spectre, Al, built specifically for the movie.
The fantasy comedy-drama directed by Burton, based on Daniel Wallace’s 1998 novel, starred Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Billy Crudup, Jessica Lange, Helena Bonham Carter, Alison Lohman, Robert Guillaume, Marion Cotillard and Steve Buscemi. The film’s plotline revolves around the story of a frustrated son who tries to distinguish fact from fiction in the life of his father, a teller of tall tales.
The film was shot on location in Alabama in a series of fairy tale vignettes evoking the tone of a Southern Gothic fantasy.

"Star Wars: Visions" Volume 2 seemed to have done its homework on Star Wars cartoons. For starters, the "Bandits of Golak" utters a quip like "All this for sweets?", which emulates a line like "All this for fruit?" in "Star Wars Rebels" season 1. But the Aardman stop-motion short "I Am Your Mother" takes its "Rebels" homages a step further through its Twi'lek character designs.
That is, if the creative and color choices aren't just a coincidence. The Aardman short concerns a teal Twi'lek mother and daughter, both of whom just happen to resemble the old teal concept art of Hera Syndulla, the Twi'lek pilot of the Ghost crew in "Rebels" voiced by Vanessa Marshall. This may feel coincidental until you spy Hera Syndulla floating in the background and suspect that the short's director, Magdalena Osinska, was deliberate about their nearly identical appearances to the Hera prototypes. After all, the young Twi'lek...

Like most people, I was pretty damn disappointed with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The film had a barely intelligible story, rolled back a whole bunch of character development and was riddled with unexplained plot elements. The most brazen was bringing back Emperor Palpatine without explaining how.
We all saw Darth Vader hurl him into the second Death Star’s reactor in Return of the Jedi, shortly followed by the entire station blowing up. The closest thing we got to an explanation of how he returned was the cryptic line: “the Dark Side of the force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.” But really, that doesn’t clear up anything.
Frustrated by this lack of explanation, Star Wars fans have now turned to the vast universe of media outside the films for answers. One source that looks very promising is The Book of the...

As was documented in last week's episode, the Kkw Beauty boss was told her antibodies tested positive for Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis. The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star had sought out the expertise of Dr. Daniel Wallace after experiencing swollen joints, headaches and general fatigue. However, she never expected to receive such troubling news. Still, since false positives can occur during initial testing, Kim met with Dr. Ami Ben-Artzi for an ultrasound in order to gain clarity on her situation. Nobody likes a waiting game, especially when it has anything to do with your health. So it wasn't a surprise to see Kim Kardashian stressed out upon receiving potentially troubling news from her doctor during Sunday's Keeping Up With the Kardashians season premiere. After undergoing a blood test to determine the cause of some painful physical symptoms she'd been dealing with for some time—swollen joints, headaches, general fatigue—the Kkw Beauty founder got a call from Dr. Daniel Wallace with her results later on in the episode. Andrew Lippa and John August, the composer and script writer of the 2013 Broadway musical “Big Fish,” have blasted the decision by a Pittsburgh theater to cancel an upcoming production because of the director’s plan to include a same-sex couple and their child in one of the show’s production numbers.
“‘Family-friendly’ shouldn’t mean ignoring reality,” Lippa and August said in a joint statement to TheWrap on Thursday. “Let’s remember that in America there are all kinds of families, including ones with two dads, two moms, people of all gender identity, color and creed. Family-friendly is something bigger than it once was.”
August and Lippa made the statement after they learned that the Palisade Playhouse in Pittsburgh had halted the production following the resignation of director Nik Nemec and several cast members. Nemec quit when he clashed with playhouse producers over how to include a gay family in the background of a song.

Be the hero in the larger-than-life Andrew Lippa musical “Big Fish,” now casting its Edward. Based on the Daniel Wallace novel and Tim Burton film of the same name, “Big Fish ”is a fantastical musical that illustrates the larger-than-life anecdotes of Edward Bloom, a man nearing the end of his life, a fact that has compelled his son Will to embark on an adventure of his own. A male actor, aged 35–59, is currently sought to play the lead role of Edward. Talent must be able to sing (vocal range: bari-tenor G2–G4) and dance. Rehearsals for “Big Fish” will begin May 15, and performances run select dates from June 29–July 29 at Chance Theater in Anaheim, California. Union actors will be paid $240 per week under the Aea Special Appearance Agreement. Nonunion actors will be paid $725 for the whole production run. Six weeks after The Last Jedi‘s release and still, the analysis of Rian Johnson’s Star Wars sequel continues unabated.
To his credit, the director has been pretty forthcoming about the pic. Whether it’s the so-called “Holdo Maneuver” to General Hux’s big moment, the mystery of Rey’s parentage to Luke Skywalker’s third and final lesson, Johnson hasn’t shied away from The Last Jedi‘s more contentious scenes, nor has he buckled in the face of online criticism – in fact, if you happen to follow Rian Johnson on Twitter, you’ll know that he tends to put Internet trolls in their place.
And now, thanks to his recent appearance on /Film’s podcast, Johnson has shared new details on how he arrived at Luke’s Force projection in The Last Jedi. Citing inspiration from Star Wars: The Jedi Path, a canonical book from Daniel Wallace,...

You’d imagine that after directing Star Wars: The Last Jedi, one of the most critically acclaimed and financially successful Star Wars movies of all-time, Rian Johnson would be able to kick back a bit and rest on his laurels. Well, apparently not. Faced with a torrent of criticism from fans annoyed that the film didn’t fit in with their idea of what a Star Wars movie ‘should’ be, he’s been manning the barricades on Twitter and doling out some pretty hilarious responses.
It was just the other day that he was dealing with some deluded loser releasing a fan cut that practically removed all women from the film, and his response – “hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha” – hit the nail on the head. Now, he’s dealing with criticism that Luke’s force projection power shown during the finale of The Last Jedi was just something he pulled out of his ass.

Tim Burton is perhaps one of the most unique and exciting filmmakers working today. With a vision inspired by classic horror and a dry wit, his films are often fiercely entertaining and endlessly clever. Of course, that’s not to say that there aren’t dark spots on his filmography. Like every filmmaker he’s had his missteps but even when the movies don’t quite work Burton manages to create films that are visually stunning and artistic. With the recent release of Big Eyes and a possible sequel to Beetlejuice in the works, examining Burton’s work and influence is more important than ever.

New York -- The Broadway musical Big Fish is being reeled in. The stage adaptation of Daniel Wallace's 1998 novel and Tim Burton's 2003 film about the conflicted relationship between a Southern spinner of tall tales and his more grounded son will cut short its open-ended run Dec. 29, less than three months after its official opening. Directed and choreographed by five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman, the show drew mixed reviews and has seen its box office slip in recent weeks, as initial curiosity from diehard musical fans subsided and the pot of advance ticket sales diminished.

Very early in the new stage musical “Big Fish,” director Susan Stroman delivers a splashy ensemble number, “Be the Hero,” that effectively introduces us to many of the fantastical characters we know from Tim Burton’s 2003 film version and the original novel by Daniel Wallace. The difference, however, between seeing them onscreen or reading about these mythic figures is that when they’re forced to sing and dance right off the bat with no introduction, there’s a distinct feeling of the wrong kind of déjà vu. Is that Ariel from “The Little Mermaid”? One of the witches from “Wicked”? The circus.

That’s what was missing.”

We previously heard that a Man Of Steel novelization from Titan Books was confirmed for a June release, and there has also been confirmation of a comic book tie-in of sorts to director Zack Snyder's Superman reboot (with Scott Snyder and Jim Lee working on the new Man Of Steel ongoing series, which isn't related to the film itself). Now, via ComicBook.com, we have some info on yet another tie-in book. According to the site, a companion book titled Man Of Steel: Inside The Legendary World Of Superman by author Daniel Wallace will be released on June 14th, the same day that the movie hits theaters. The book is 160 pages and hardcover, and according to the description, it "offers an intimate look at the reinvention of the world’s most iconic superhero through the eyes of acclaimed director Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) and producer Christopher Nolan (The Dark...

"A man tells his stories so many times that he becomes the stories. They live on after him, and in that way he becomes immortal." Following in the footsteps of Les Miserables, in starting as a book and then going on to be adapted for stage and film, Big Fish seems to be doing the same thing, except the order of adaptations is switched around a bit. It started as a book, penned by Daniel Wallace, and then went on to be made into a movie directed by Tim Burton, and now it's becoming a musical, bound for Broadway. The film was released in 2003 and was set up as a story within a story, or rather, several stories within a story, as the film focused on the life of Edward Bloom (Albert Finney, Ewan McGregor), a traveling salesman who loved to tell a good story, and whose tales were a...
