B. Smith, a former TV host, restaurateur and author, died of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease on Saturday night in her home in Long Island, New York. Her husband announced the news in a Facebook post on Sunday morning. She was 70.
“Thank you to Dr. Sam Gandy, East End Hospice and additional caregivers who helped us make B. comfortable in her final days. Thank you to all the friends and fans who supported B. and our family during her journey. Thank you to everyone for respecting our privacy during this agonizing time. Heaven is shining even brighter now that it is graced with B.’s dazzling and unforgettable smile,” her husband, Dan Gasby, wrote.
Smith appeared on two episodes of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” and later hosted her own weekly, syndicated show, “B. Smith With Style,” in 1997. The half-hour show aired weekdays on Btn and Bounce TV and featured segments about home decor and cooking.

When Dan Gasby and his wife of 23 years, restaurateur and lifestyle guru B. Smith, learned she suffered from early onset Alzheimer's disease three years ago, he had no idea that caring for her would be a round-the-clock job. "It's the toughest thing I've ever dealt with," Gasby, 62, a TV producer, tells People. "Anybody who is an Alzheimer's care giver knows exactly what other caregivers are going through. It's 24/7. The complexity and the intensity of it is very tough." "You do try to hide it from everybody," Barbara Smith, 64, tells CBS News. Smith, who was one of the first African American models to grace the cover of Mademoiselle before opening her own restaurant chain, told her doctor about her symptoms four years ago. Since getting his first professional review in Back Stage as a young man, "appropriately handsome with a fresh scrubbed–naiveté," Walter B. Smith has shuffled through casting notices in the publication. Of late, he receives a constant flow of notices online. One in particular listed the name of a fellow actor, Ray Limon, as director-choreographer of a production of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" at the Welk Theatre in Escondido, Calif., just north of his home in San Diego. Seeing that Limon was associated with the musical, Smith submitted himself. The two worked together previously in a radio drama adaptation of "It's a Wonderful Life," in which Limon witnessed Smith taking on multiple roles. Limon describes Smith as "the epitome of a strong character actor." When initial preparations began for "How to Succeed," Limon was hoping his former cohort would come in to audition. At the time,...

At the ripe, old age of nearly twelve, Paloma (Garance Le Guillermic) has decided that life is futile, and riddled with ridiculous hypocrisy, and she's decided to opt out. What's moving, telling, and ultimately brilliant about her decision is that her plan to kill herself on her next birthday is perhaps one of the most thought out, and well-reasoned decisions she has run across.
The daughter of wealthy parents - a father who, very "averagely," spends so much time on work, that he has little left to spend with his family, and a mother who talks to her plants more than anyone else, has quite the cocktail of "therapy helpers," and is the purpose behind creating the phrase, "flitting about the house" - Paloma can find little about life that makes an argument for meaningful connection... with anything.

Race. Religion. Politics. According to Mill Valley Film Festival‘s Director of Programming Zöe Elton, those are subjects to avoid when choosing “something breezy” to open and close a film festival. At a recent press conference to announce this year’s line-up, however, she was obviously making ironic note of that supposition. As it turns out, this year’s fest is bookended by films steeped in those three volatile topics.
Opening the festival’s 31st edition on October 2nd will be Religulous and The Secret Life of Bees. The Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center will host the latest from Borat director Larry Charles, a documentary in which Bill Maher ridicules the world’s three major monotheistic religions. Over in Mill Valley, the Sequoia Theater will screen the west coast premiere of Gina Prince-Bythewood’s tale of race relations in 1964 South Carolina, starring Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys and Sophie Okonedo.
