Following the still unreleased in Malaysia “The Story of Southern Islet”, Keat Aun Chong came up this year his second film, “Snow in Midsummer” which had its premiere its Giornate degli Autori and led the number of nominations in this year's Golden Horse awards, although it left with only one for sound effects. The story is based on the homonymous classic Chinese play of the Yuan dynasty, also including in the story the 13 May incident, an episode of Sino-Malay sectarian violence that took place in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, on 13 May 1969, when a number of people disappeared, only to be discovered later in mass graves. As the director mentions, on that fateful night in May, an opera singer died and was buried in the same cemetery. Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut Woman Of The Hour and family drama Mother Couch, starring Ewan McGregor and Ellen Burstyn, are headed to the third edition of Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea International Film Festival, running from November 30 to December 9 in the port city of Jeddah.
The titles will play in the Festival Favorites sidebar which was announced on Thursday alongside the event’s Red Sea: Treasures strand.
Kendrick directs and stars in Netflix-acquired drama Woman Of The Hour as a woman whose path crosses notorious serial killer Rodney Alcala, whilst in Niclas Larsson’s first film Mother Couch, McGregor plays a man whose mother squats the family furniture store.
Further films in the line-up – showcasing 21 buzzy festival titles from the last 12 months – include the David Oyelowo produced documentary Allihopa: The Dalkurd Story; Women’s World Cup doc Copa 71, executive produced by Serena and Venus Williams, Jennifer Esposito’s Fresh Kills,...

The Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival has announced dual opening night titles, both inspired by faith and local memories, as well as its closing gala presentation.
The festival will open with “Snow in Midsummer,” directed by Chong Keat-aun, a former winner of the Golden Horse Film Awards’ best new director prize with “The Story of Southern Islet,” and “Be With Me,” by Hwarng Wern-ying, who previously won Golden Horse prizes for art direction, costume and makeup.
The festival, which runs Nov. 9-26, will close with the world premiere of “Tales of Taipei,” produced by Bowie Tsang and comprising ten stories by directors from East Asia.
The two opening films were both part of the 2020 Golden Horse Project Promotion, a project matching event. They both have their Asian premiere at the festival.

Venice parallel section Giornate degli Autori (GdA) has unveiled the selection for its 20th edition running from August 30 to September 9, featuring a surprise short by Céline Sciamma, a new feature by Teona Strugar Mitevska as well as a tribute to late Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallée.
The line-up spans 10 films in competition, seven special events, eight titles in Venetian Nights as well as a special day-long event devoted Vallée and the cinema of Québec, featuring a screening of his 2005 coming of age drama C.R.A.Z.Y.

International projects already have at least 70 of funding in place.
The Venice Film Festival’s Gap-Financing Market has selected 33 international feature and documentary projects for its ninth edition this year, which runs from September 2-4.
The international projects nearing completion will have the chance to close their financing through one-to-one meetings at the Market, which is part of the Venice Production Bridge.
Each of the feature and documentary projects has at least 70 of its funding in place.
The countries in focus at this year’s event are France and Taiwan, with a number of projects from each country receiving a special invite to the Market.

Childhood memories are something not entirely tangible, they change their shape with the passage of time, they can get blurred, or suddenly disappear and reappear. They are a magical source of nostalgia, elusive, semi-unknown, living their own lives. The Story Of Southern Islet, the debut of Keat Aun Chong, is built on such memories.
The film by the Malaysian director cannot be defined by genre or narrative. It is like a spiritual journey into the past, built of elements that give the impression of non-linear and often scary child-like feelings, full of ghosts and monsters who influence reality. The whole thing is connected by the main storyline: Yan (Jojo Goh) is looking for a cure for her seriously ill husband, Cheong (Season Chee).
Chong captivates the viewers with a myth-like story in which ghosts and beings from the spiritual world take on not always friendly physical forms, as if they came straight.
The film by the Malaysian director cannot be defined by genre or narrative.
