“This is the perfect opportunity for us to make reality ‘real’ again,” says Peter Tierney, the commissioner who has spent the past two years overseeing ITV’s rebooted Big Brother.
Speaking as ITV prepares to become the third UK network to premiere the world-beating format, Tierney says his team have listened relentlessly to audiences “telling us that they want real, authentic reality.”
“They are aware of the way in which [some of] these shows are made, the directions you can push contestants in and the hands of the producer,” he adds. “But Big Brother presents us with the perfect opportunity to make reality ‘real’ again, providing a better opportunity for an environment that is conducive to real life than many other reality shows afford you.”

Big Brother has found its third British home, ITV, with the network teasing the news – one of the UK TV industry’s worst kept secrets of the past few months – during the final of tonight’s Love Island season eight.
The format aired on Channel 4 from 2000 to 2010 and Paramount-owned Channel 5 from 2010 to 2018, with ITV’s reboot set to hit British screens in 2023.
As with Love Island, the Banijay format will air on ITV portfolio channel ITV2 along with soon-to-launch streamer Itvx and is a huge coup for the commercial broadcaster.
Airing on CBS in the U.S., the format involves several housemates living in a house together for weeks, competing in challenges as they are voted off one-by-one, with the public watching their every move.
It was teased during the final ad break of tonight’s Love Island, ITV’s biggest reality show.

Shilpa Shetty, the Indian actress known for her roles in Hindi movies and as a TV personality, has been cleared of “obscenity” charges dating back to a 15-year-old incident at a charity event.
At an Aids awareness event in 2007 in India, Hollywood star Richard Gere publicly kissed Shetty on the arm and on both cheeks while they were being videoed on stage. The brief, if strange, moment provoked a fiery reaction in India, with radical Hindu groups taking umbrage with the public display of affection, and in particular criticizing Shetty for not resisting.
You can footage of the moment via AP here:
At the time, a judge issued arrest warrants for both parties on charges including “indecency” and “obscenity”. The case against Gere was swiftly dropped, and the actor, who is a Buddhist, was soon allowed to return to India.

Outspoken TV presenter Piers Morgan’s remarks about Meghan Markle is the new record holder for most complaints made to U.K. media regulator Ofcom, but the British personality is unperturbed.
“Only 57,000? I’ve had more people than that come up & congratulate me in the street for what I said. The vast majority of Britons are right behind me.” Morgan tweeted on Wednesday.

Piers Morgan’s comments about Meghan Markle on Good Morning Britain last week have officially become the most complained about moment in British television history, according to the UK media regulator.
Ofcom revealed on Wednesday that 57,121 complaints have been made about the show, in which Morgan questioned if Markle was being genuine in saying her time with the royal family had left her feeling suicidal. She made the comments in a tell-all CBS interview with Oprah Winfrey last week.
The complaints are up from 41,000 last week, and puts Good Morning Britain above an episode of Celebrity Big Brother in Ofcom’s hall of shame. Some 44,500 complained about a Big Brother episode in 2007, when Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty was targeted by Jade Goody and Danielle Lloyd.
Ofcom announced last week that it is investigating Good Morning Britain to establish whether Morgan broke the UK broadcasting code. Morgan himself resigned last Tuesday...

On March 10, something incredible happened on Jessie Ware's Table Manners podcast. Dan Levy, aka David Rose from Schitt's Creek, was Ware's guest and the conversations that took place were truly wonderful. Dan told both Jessie and her mum Lennie all about his adventures of living in London and working for the talent agency ICM, an experience he had after going through a particularly taxing breakup.
"I was living on Charlotte Street. It was the early days of the internet so I don't even know how I found this place. It was a tiny little apartment on the top floor above a restaurant," he told the Wares. He went on to explain that his time in London had been a hugely formative experience for him, as he struggled to combat social anxiety and insecurity in his younger days. New Delhi, Dec 10 (Ians) Bigg Boss made a thundering debut on the small screen in 2006. The controversial reality show has made headlines season after season, and has been tagged as one of the highest-rated shows on Indian television. However, it seems the show is devoid of much of its glitter this season.
Bigg Boss in India is based on the show Big Brother, which was first aired on Dutch TV in 1999. Originally sketched as a social experiment, it was designed as The Truman Show in real life. Since that day, Big Brother format has run 448 seasons in 54 franchise countries and territories.
The show also drew inspiration from George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984, where Big Brother was a fictional character, a totalitarian dictator. The novel spoke of a future where each and every person would be under constant watch by surveillance cameras, even inside their own homes. The intention was to generate fear,...

Actress-entrepreneur Shilpa Shetty Kundra says her journey in the Hindi film industry was not an easy ride as producers threw her out of their films without giving any reasons.

"I was this dark, tall and lanky child who had her life pretty much laid out for her. I'd graduate and work with my dad. Even though in my heart I wanted to do something different, something bigger and better, I never felt like I could. But when I participated in a fashion show, just for fun, I met a photographer who wanted to click my photographs," she wrote.

Football documentaries - they're a funny old game. Today's fly-on-the-wall peeks into the lives of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo may have marked a welcome return of the genre - but compared to mud-and-studs docs of old, they're as over-polished and blemish-free as one of David Beckham's Armani suits.
And so ahead of Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and co's new BBC documentary series Out of Their League, let's reminisce about some classic football programmes - when the beautiful game felt like less a Nike advert, more like an episode of Bullseye.
1. Graham Taylor gets the sack
After an abysmal 1992 European Championships, England manager needed some positive PR, so the Fa allowed camera crews to follow him round during the entire 1994 World Cup qualification campaign for An Impossible Job.
Whoops: this spectacularly backfired for old Turnip Head, as England were knocked out. But not before Taylor effed and jeffed his way through every single match,...

Big Brother does love a twist, so this Friday three former housemates will be returning to join the 'fake evictee' in a Secret Lair. And goodness, did that spark some conversations at DS Towers about who should return!
Of course, some of our picks have been on Ultimate Big Brother, but we're going to ignore that (we're not sure it's canon when Ulrika Jonsson can be dubbed an 'ultimate' housemate, to be honest). And while there are obviously plenty of amazing contestants from years gone by, we couldn't choose them all. But below are just some of our choices for Friday's big twist - let us know who you want to throw back in!
Nick 'Nasty Nick' Bateman (Big Brother 1)
Series one was something of an untainted golden era for Big Brother. The show was yet to be overrun with perma-tanned attention seekers and was a genuinely fascinating human experiment:...

Alexander O'Neal has revealed his reasoning for quitting Celebrity Big Brother following his dramatic departure over the weekend.
The singer became embroiled in two unpleasant confrontations with showbiz blogger Perez Hilton, which resulted in a formal warning from Big Brother over O'Neal's use of an offensive term.
Speaking to CBB host Emma Willis on Celebrity Big Brother's Bit On The Side, Alexander revealed why he walked, saying: "I did it for myself and for my housemates."
He added that "the stress became unbearable" prior to his exit, and was subsequently forced to accept that the 'Perez problem' was not going to go away.
But Alexander is not the only disgruntled celebrity housemate to voluntarily leave, and we doubt he'll be the last.
Some, like Claire King, withdrew from the show due to illness, while others have been removed by producers.

Poor old Marlon Wallen. Big Brother is back this week and the thought of a whole new batch of housemates stepping through those doors is getting us very excited indeed. But it also got us thinking - how well do we remember series gone by? After all, there always has to be a first evictee - so will they go down in history or be quietly forgotten?

Well, we decided to test it out by checking your knowledge of the first evictees of each series - and no, we're not talking people who walked or were ejected (and yes, both of these things have happened in the first week before.) Give it a go, and tell us how you get on...

For the past month, Shia Labeouf has been embroiled in a very public plagiarism scandal. This week, the controversy came to a head when Labeouf announced via Twitter that he is "retiring from all public life." The whole scandal has been bizarre, messy, and hard to follow, so we're breaking it down. Here's what happened: Dec. 16: Labeouf Is Publicly Accused of Plagiarism Earlier that week, Howard Cantour, a short film directed by Labeouf, debuted on the internet. Soon after, news broke that Daniel Clowes was accusing Labeouf of lifting dialogue and characters from his graphic novel, Justin M. Damiano. Dec 16: Labeouf Issues an Apology Via Twitter Copying isn't particularly creative work. Being inspired by someone else's idea to produce something new and different Is creative work. — Shia Labeouf (@thecampaignbook) December 17, 2013 In my excitement and naiveté as an amateur filmmaker, I got lost in the creative process and neglected...

Shia Labeouf should maybe start going by Lie-a Labeouf. Dude loves plagiarizing more than your little nephew loves the Tickle Me Ferbie he got from Santa. This all started a couple of weeks back when people noticed that the Beef’s debut short film, HowardCantour.com, marked a strong resemblance to Daniel Clowes's comic Justin M. Damiano. Labeouf apologized on Twitter, but then it was revealed his apology was plagiarized from a four-year-old Yahoo Answers comment. Well, he’s back to apologizing for plagiarizing while plagiarizing. Here are the two tweets in question: The first is ripped verbatim from Jade Goody’s apology for being racist on Celebrity Big Brother. The second is word for word (hashtag for hashtag) the same as an apology porn star Mr. Marcus tweeted in 2012 for hiding his syphilis (though Mm's tweet was eventually deleted). As Picasso famously said, “Good artists copy, great artists steal syphilis apologies.

I have just about had it with this troll. Shia Labeouf — or as I find it easier and more reasonable to call him for some reason, Shia Beowulf — will not stop fake-apologizing on Twitter In The Words Of Other People. Since admitting he plagiarized Daniel Clowes’ comic Justin M. Damiano in a short film, Labeouf has been lifting his fake-apology language from Eliot Spitzer, Russell Crowe, Bp CEO Tony Hayward, Alec Baldwin, Shepard Fairey, Mark Zuckerberg, and perhaps the most trustworthy source of all: Yahoo Answers. And he’s at it again with three new snippets of terrible performance art today.

Below-stairs subterfuge, train station reconciliations and recycled plots in this week’s Downton Abbey…
This review contains spoilers.
Welcome back to Downton, a place where, like a D&D 'Jazz-Age Toffs' Expansion Pack, every character comes with their own alignment card: Good, Evil, or Gormless. This week saw kindly acts from the Good (Anna, Bates, Isobel, Mrs Hughes and Carson), dastardly plotting from the Evil (Edna and Thomas), and gullibility from the Gormless (Mr Molesley the Younger and Lady Cora, who really should have seen through Barrow by now, even if he did help her to oust wicked Nanny West last week).
It was an hour of tying up loose ends and stitching open wounds. Still making amends for ruining everybody’s Christmas, series four of the ITV drama is doing all it can to get back to rocking our collective cradle on a...

How should Glee handle the death of star Cory Monteith? Vulture argues the show should turn the tragedy into an examination of grief. The kids of Glee have dealth with death before, but when you’re young, losing someone your age is a very different shock to take.
In an interview with Whodunnit producer Anthony E. Zuiker, Zuiker explains some behind-the-scenes details like why the exams that determines who gets eliminated aren’t shown on the show, why we’re now seeing an interview with the eliminated “corpse” and whether all the personal drama and hoarding of information was planned.
There is a stage opera set to open in London about Big Brother UK contestant Jade Goody. and the Crowd (wept) follows the woman who made racist remarks on Celebrity Big Brother that became an international firestorm, only to capture the attention of tabloids again when she died of cancer two years later.

Every national newspaper carries front page pictures of film star following news of her having had a double mastectomy
The media response to Angelina Jolie's announcement about having had a double mastectomy illustrated yet again the power of celebrity.
Her picture was very predictably on every national newspaper front page in Britain (though not in the United States, and not even on page one of the New York Times on the day it ran her op-ed article about the operation).
This says something about the difference between British and American journalism. (Discuss). It also raises the question of whether celebrity power is merely a media construct, and therefore foisted on the public, or whether the public responds to it positively without the need of prompting. (Discuss also).
What cannot be in any doubt is that serious matters often achieve a widespread public reaction when celebrities get involved.

As we bid the fondest of goodbyes to 30 Rock, we remember the running gags that made it great…
As 30 Rock drew its final breath last night, yards of column inches are currently being devoted - and deservedly so - to praising the work of creator Tina Fey. Article upon article is applauding Fey’s writing, characters, cast, and seven seasons of energetic, inventive, satirical comedy.
As the heavy-lifting is being handled elsewhere then, we’ve decided to go micro and salute the peripheral moments that made 30 Rock so much fun. As the show makes its way up to the big TV studio in the sky, let’s celebrate its running gags, from the fake movies, to the awful songs, Frank’s hats, and the godawful Tgs sketches…

Jade Goody's sons get upset when they are kept out of the limelight at showbiz bashes, according to their dad Jeff Brazier. The This Morning presenter said he fights hard to keep the boys - Bobby, 9, and Freddie, 8 - out of the media and has a privacy ban on them until they are 16. Brazier told The Sun: "They get mad at me sometimes. I took them to an event at the Science Museum recently and they saw me having my picture taken and they said, 'Why can't we get in the picture with you? Mummy used to let us'. "You can't explain to them why it's good for them. Unfortunately, they get upset with me." Jade Goody, the boys' mother, died of cervical cancer in 2009, and their lives have been kept private ever since. Brazier admitted: "I probably could have been a millionaire by now if I'd gone down...

"I must be, or why would they both be misbehaving so much at school? I have to look at what's going wrong at home in order to improve their situation in the classroom. Am I too soft, too strict? Do I mention mum enough? There are so many factors to consider in order to strike the right balance." Brazier (more)...
